John August's THE NINES gets split... 4.5 goes to Sony and 4.5 goes to Newmarket!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I saw John August's THE NINES at Sundance this year (click here to read my review!). If the reception of the film at Sundance is any indication, this flick will divide people. I liked it quite a lot, whereas Rav hated it.
It's a bizarre flick, I can see how it causes that divide. It's a film that is essentially three different stories that are joined in a really interesting way. Each story stars the same three actors: Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis and Melissa McCarthy, playing different characters... or are they?
It's a hard movie to describe without blowing the whole concept, but I really dug it. It's a dark, twisted "high-concept" flick... funny, strange, dead serious... it's all over the map, which is probably why it divides the audience.
Sony Pictures and Newmarket are going to be releasing film domestically, splitting the rights. Sony gets home video and TV while Newmarket get theatrical.
