I wonder what kind of costume or uniform Captain Plantastic wears? It is rugged battle armor? Schumakerian molded leather with gaudy highlights? Leaves superglued on fetishistically? Is he a he, or is he a she captain? So many mysteries.
Captain Plantastic here. Longtime reader, first time reviewer. Recovering from the American Film Market held two weeks ago with a slew of movie reviews.
"Robotech: the Shadow Chronicles"- I'm a big Robotech fan just like most people, but I thought this movie was unfulfilling. The blend of standard animation and 2D was like "Titian A.E." or "Treasure Planet." It was distracting. Either go with one or the other. The story concerns the on-going war between the humans and the Invid as the Invid leave Earth with the last remaining supply of Protoculture. They fear the approaching "Shadow Warriors" that plan on destroying the Invid and the
human race as well.
Scott Bernard is alive and well. The former leader of the resistance on Mars made it out, but his sister didn't. Mya is now the leader of "Skull Squadron" and is the best pilot in the squadron in her lavender VF. Claudia's younger brother is now married to a nurse and is a high ranking officer. Admiral Rick Hunter is mentioned, seen briefly and is presumably lost during an encounter with a black hole in space. he was the most interesting character of the series next to the ill-fated Roy Fokker. I wanted to see more of him and what happened to Lisa Hayes and Lynn Minmay. Battles scenes are worthy, but I miss the old sound effects. Overall, something seemed to be lacking in this movie. Like it was misfiring on one of the cylinders. Maybe it had to do with this film was made by Korean animators and not Japanese.
The updated "Robotech" theme is okay. I still wish they kept the original music. Space title sequence touring throughh the galaxy is well done.
After the screening, it left me wanting more. Lots of unanswered questions. Maybe this was Harmony Gold's way of testing the market to see if there's still a interest in the series. Its good and worth a look if it comes out in a limited release or DVD. At least its not "Megazone 23" trying to be "Macross."
"Jackie Chan's: Rob-B-Hood"- This was great! Its old school Jackie at his funniest and his best! Jackie and partner in crime, Louis Koo steal pharmaceutical goods to sell on the Black Market to pay for Jackie's gambling debts and Koo's expensive taste in women and cars. A botched baby kidnapping goes wrong at a local hospital with our heroes intervening, but later on they are forced to kidnap the same baby themselves for a wealthy magnate that will get them out of debt.
They grow attatched to the kid as they have to take care of him for two weeks. They now nothing about child raising and try to get help on the sly even posing as a gay couple!
Action scenes are fantastic! Even at 52 Jackie is amazing! Yuen Biao puts in an appearance as a detective hot on Jackie's trail. There's a fight with Jackie vs. Yuen vs. a group of bad guys in Jackie's apartment trying to kidnap the kid that is incredibly well-choreographed which later leads up to a chase scene in an amusement park that is non-stop action. And yes, Jackie Chan outtakes in the end credits.
Action, laughs, Jackie. What more could you ask for? [TRAILER].
"13"- Strange Thai flick that couldn't figure out if it wanted to be a serious film or a comedy. A man loses his job and his cell phone rings allowing the opportunity to win a million dollars if he completes the 13 tasks. One which includes murder. Funny in some parts, but serious
in others. The steamed dog poo for lunch scene was a little to weird for me. Especially when the guy was licking the plate clean. Hey, I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine.
I don't think this wil come out in the U.S. Maybe eventually on DVD and even then, get it on bargain night, unless you can't wait and you're a fecal freak.
"O.S.S. 117" - What if James Bond was an asshole? Funny, send-up of the early Connery flicks. The lead even looks like Connery in several scenes! Story concerns the investigation of the sudden death of O.S.S. 117's best friend in Egypt, circa 1955. Gorgeous women, well crafted stunts and fight scenes. This movie has a great look to it parodying the early Bond movies in lighting and costumes, especially the Saville Row cut suits our hero wears. Its like it was filmed in Technicolor in 1960!
O.S.S. 117 doesn't have the luxury of "Universal Imports" like Mr.Bond had. Instead he's in the guise of a manager running a chicken farm in Cario. No gadets or fancy cars in this one though he does get driven around by the female lead in her dirty TR-4 where O.S.S. 117 is constantly complaining why she can't keep it clean. Hey, they're in a friggin' desert!
He's a secret agent that means well, but he's just clueless. One such scene is where the morning wailer begins praying to the city through a loudspeaker and O.S.S. 177 is trying to get to sleep after a rough night of action. He walks across the road and beats the crap out of the guy. This later, has it reprecussions, with half the Muslim populace looking or him.
A very funny film and with "Casino Royale" coming out, a good comedy companion piece. [TRAILER].
Oh, yeah. I saw the "Astronaut Farmer" too. You guys can be real harsh on critics about something you haven't seen. While I don't think its the best movie of the year, like the other reviewer said, that's his opinion and that's cool, its a pretty damn good movie.
"CAPTAIN PLANTASTIC!"
The first image…hits all the wrong buttons. Does anyone remember Kenny Roger’s song “Planet Texas”? Cowboys and aliens? I do. That poster made me think of it. I’m sorry.
