Monki previews the new Caribbean-based Turks & Caicos Internation Film Festival!!
Greetings humans, Monki here writing just a few hours before I catch myself a plane off to the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival.
That's right, your favorite video game loving monkey is off to cover a film festival out in the beautiful Caribbean. I'll be bringing along my trusty Nintendo DS with a few games I picked up to play along during the flights in the cargo holds. Thank god for backlighting.
So, the cool thing about this festival is that all of the movies have a music-centric vibe to them. Being raised here in Austin, music is coded into my DNA via heavy doses of shots at an early age. This festival seems to cover many aspects of music from hip-hop to country. Very cool.
I'll be scoping out the islands, wandering the beaches, picking out fresh tropical fruit that I can't get shipped to the treehouse and watching movies right on the beach. Hey Matt Dentler, what are the chances we can move SXSW to the Caribbean next year? I'll buy a platinum badge!
Some of the movies I'll be seeing include the controversial new Dixie Chicks documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing." I remember the insane amount of noise over the "...from our state..." comments that were made and hopefully this doc will show off what these singers went through in the aftermath of that. Interesting.
Another movie I have no idea at all about is "DJ Drama's Respect the Game." This is a doc about the "Southern hip-hop phenomenon" that is currently in full swing. I'm curious whether or not Houston rap will be covered in this piece; Swisha House, DJ Screw, Paul Wall, Mike Jones. Count me as anxious on this one.
I'm just going to let you read the first bit of the synopsis for this next movie, "Jericho's Echo: Punk Rock in the Holy Land," and you tell me whether or not you think this is going to be incredible. "Mohawks, stage diving, fists flying. Homemade band t-shirts, circle pits, singalongs. These scenes are not unfamiliar; they have flooded pop culture imagery for over 25 years. The punk rock ethos gains new relevance in Israel, however, when band members' choices are often between picking up a guitar or picking up a gun." Damn.
There are a few other movies I'm excited about, including one starring Vivica Fox and another that is exec produced by Queen Latifah AND Bruce Willis.
So, if any readers out there are going to be attending the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival, drop me a line and you can buy me a beer or three. And then I'll tell you the story of what Quint made me do when I couldn't cover my poker debts. Until then, check out the festival's website, I'm going to go finish packing.
