Leave it to Robo to find the most cultural of motion picture events on the horizon this month, and joy of joys old FATHER GEEK will be able to go. This is the kind of film showing that only a venue like Austin's great PARAMOUNT can host. Tim and the crew at AICN's fave The Alamo have been having live music with silents for a while now, and they are really great, but more than a dozen band members they just can't handle. Let's support this effort on behalf of the Paramount folks. I can assure you that it will be an experience you'll never forget. Get on the stick and buy those tickets. We want them to do this more offen, don't we? Here's ROBO...
WHERE EVERYONE WHO LOVES FILM SHOULD BE THIS FRIDAY
NIGHT...
Greetings, citizens! I, Robogeek, have returned to our fair
city of Austin after my recent holiday visit (and scheduled
annual tune-up) at the Banzai Institute. I
have many stories to share -- including my sneak peek at
Disney's "Tarzan," among other things -- which I hope to have
for you soon. But first, there's something far more pressing at
issue.
What are you doing Friday night?
If you don't know, you very well may within moments. And if
you already have plans, you may have to change them just as
soon. Why? Well...
Imagine boarding a time machine with a thousand other
devoted film-philes.
Imagine travelling back _seven_ decades, to the Golden Age
of Silent Films.
Imagine entering a majestic movie palace, visiting the
well-stocked bar in the lobby, and being shown to your seat by
an usher.
Imagine a massive pair of red velvet curtains parting
before you, revealing a towering silver screen.
Imagine seeing a beautiful, pristine presentation of the
first film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Imagine hearing it accompanied by its original score --
performed _live_ by an orchestra!
If you can make it to the Paramount Theatre in downtown
Austin this Friday night, you won't have to imagine it. You'll
live it. And you'll never forget it.
Friday, February 5 at 8:00 pm, the Paramount Theatre will
present a new 35mm print (courtesy of Paramount Pictures) of
the classic 1927 silent film "Wings," starring Clara Bow, Buddy
Rogers, and Gary Cooper. Fifty years before "Superman," _this_
was the film that made you believe a man could fly; set in
World War I, it features some of the finest, most exhilarating
aerial combat sequences ever shot. Oh, and there's something
about two soldiers who are in love with the same dame, too.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime filmgoing experience. How can
you even _think_ of not going? I mean, _this_ is what Harry is
coming back to Austin from Rotterdam for!
Buy your tickets right now! You'll thank me. They're $15,
$19 and $22 -- a steal, if you ask me. You can order by phone
at 469-SHOW (7469) between 10am and 9pm, or in person at the
Paramount Theatre Box Office between noon and 5:30 pm. Hell,
you can even buy tickets at Waterloo Records or any Austin
Albertson's store. (Oh, and tell 'em Robogeek sent ya.)
Once again, this is why I love living in Austin. Join the
AICN gang at the Paramount Friday night!
