News and a Pic from Henry Selick's next Stop Motion film MONKEY BONE (aka Darktown), plus SPIRIT OF THE WEST and TUSKER
Harry here with something mega cool. MONKEY BONE!!! Saaaaay Whaaaaat? Yeah yeah, I know, sounds like some sort of furry phallic reference, and ya know what, it kinda is, but you won't get that one till ya see the film. Last I heard this film was scheduled to move full steam ahead at some point in February, and that it was possible that there were negotiations with some guy named Adam Sandler to voice the title character. Sir Moggy here, has only just begun to touch on the film, and it's not all quite right. There isn't a timelimit. Ya see, the film (in short) is about what happens to us folks when we go into a coma. Well, this flick will postulate that you end up in DARK TOWN, home of the monsters of long ago. This film will be everything COOL WORLD wished it could have been and more. I've heard that this is what BEN STILLER will be doing after he gets done with MYSTERY MEN and also... SAM "I wrote a brilliant script for a BATMAN movie once but that bastard Jon Peters destroyed it!!!" HAMM wrote the script, and is working on the film last I heard. The following pic and scoop came from STAY TOONED, and just to let you know what this test shot is... well, it takes place in the Red Light Theater District of DARK TOWN, where only the Monsters go. Like some sort of perverse TIMES SQUARE (how's that for a redundant statement) the theaters all show NIGHTMARES, our nightmares and monsters watch them like they're the latest Jim Carrey or Sandler Comedy. Hmmmm, then again maybe it ain't too different. Here ya go...
Sir Moggy here from Stay Tooned at STAY TOONED. I've got
a special report concerning Dreamworks and PDI's third animated film,
"Tusker" and Henry Selick's "Monkey Bone" and also Dreamwork's 5th
animated feature, "Spirit of the West."
First up, "Tusker."
Dreamworks and Pacific Data Images announed yesterday the production
of their third joint animated project together. The film is
called "Tusker" a computer-animated creation which follows a herd of
elephants on a perilous trek across Southeast Asia. In their travels,
they encounter a wide variety of dangers, including a band of marauding
poachers. "Tusker" is scheduled to release sometime after (my guess
would be one year after) Dreamworks' animated feature "Shrek" which is
due out Fall of 2000. Tim Johnson and Brad Lewis, ``Antz's'' co-director
and producer, repectively,
will co-direct "Tusker."
Now, "Monkey Bone"
In case you haven't heard of Henry Selick's (The Nightmare Before
Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) latest project, "Monkey Bone,"
then your no animation noir fan. The film is based on the comic book,
Dark Town, produced by Mad Monkey Press, hence "Monkey Bone." The comedy
revolves around a cartoonist (played by Ben Stiller) and the incredible
fantasy world that takes place in his mind after he slips into a coma.
The man has only twelve hours to find the entrance back to reality. He
is trapped between the realms of dreams and nightmares, a place called
Dark Town. If reality is not reached, his life will fall to the arms of
death. The film is combine live action with stop-motion animation, a
Selick trademark. "Monkey Bone" is currently being produced by Fox
Entertainment and is slated to release Fall 1999.
Plus I have a preliminary test shot from the Selick's San Francisco
studio. (HARRY NOTE: SEE ABOVE)
Also, I have a little tidbit that has never been brought across on AICN.
Dreamwork's 5th animated feature is called "Spirit of the West" not just
"Spirit." The film is a western told from the point of view of a horse
named Spirit. "Spirit of the West" is being directed by Lorna Cook and
Kelly Ashbury.
That's all for now. Cheers! - Sir Moggy
