New Film From OTOMO On The Way!' What Is STEAM BOY'!

Published at:  Aug 27, 2001 4:37:02 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

This is the first I've heard of this one, and it comes from the most random of sources:

Hey Harry

Great site, Gossip and rumour is so much fun, isn't it?

Anyway, quick bit of news you might be interested in that I haven't seen any where else. Former Marvel Comics editor and freelance writer (notably on Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira as published by Marvel late 80s) was interviewed on Newsarama. Interestingly, she dropped a hint about Ottomo's new project Steam Boy. Heard anything else about it?

NEWSARAMA: Jo, first of all, can you catch readers up with what you've been up to professionally the last few years? What was your last comics project
and/or regular series, and what have you been keeping busy with since?

Jo Duffy: "Lessee...My last regular series for Glory, for Rob Liefeld. Plus just abut any crossover, special, one-shot, or mini-series people could think of putting Glory in. I was also doing a fun little book for Rob called Bloodpool, much less high-profile, but really delightful to work on, that wrapped up at about the same time... Lately, I've been doing all kinds of odd and interesting things and having a great time. I've done a number of stories for Claypool's delightfully wacky Elvira: Mistress of the Dark monthly, with a whole bunch of interesting and wonderful artists. There has been some movie-related work it would be premature to talk about, some prose fiction, ditto. I did the final English language rewrite - the same kind of work I did on Akira - for Katsuhiro Otomo's next animated film, Steam Boy, at the storyboard stage. Some choose-your-own adventures for an internet company. And just last
month, helped put together an in-house original super-hero comic that turned an insurance company's top sales force members into superheroes for one
double-sized issue.

A new project by the legend that created Akira has got to be something to shout about!

Till the next time...

Sweet Dick Willie

Okay. You know what to do. Scour for info, report back. Anyone. Everyone. Go.

"Moriarty" out.

It's the sequel to Waterboy, of course. Forgive me, it's early or late; I'm not sure which at this point.____Bee

DreamWorks was supposed to distribute this film there is an presentation anamatic floating around out there (saw it looked cool too.) The story I heard was DreamWorks wasn't sure how to market the film and the movie would cost alot on the Japan side of the production. Seems like Ottomo got to do what he wanted to with SteamBoy with Metropolis anyhow. Who knows how Sony will market Metropolis in November, I can't see it doing well (as great as that film is).

Sorry, but this is old news...

Steam Boy was supposed to be Otomo's next project either after Akira or Memories. It was going to utilize a lot of CGI but at the time the technology was quite new and prooved to be to expensive and interest in the actual story was not very high so it was put on the back burner.

    I don't if it's been cancelled, but..

There was a special on the Sci-Fi Channel about 3 years ago called Masters of Fantasy: the Anime Filmmakers, where they covered such films as Princess Mononoke, Blood, Jin-Roh, the remake of Vampire Hunter D, and Steam Boy. In it, Otomo says "I set the film in the 19th century, because that was an industrialization period, and I'm fed up with the designs of most of the recent science fiction films." "I wanted something that people hadn't seen before, so I decided to use 19th century technology."
Who's to say if this'll ever see the light of day, but I hope it does...

    Steam Boy

    by oh hell

Last I heard, Otomo had created a pilot and sought funding for the theatrical-length film. According to an old article on www.ex.org : "...full-digital full-length animation film. The story is an adventure drama centering on a 13-year-old boy named Ray in 19th century England."

    A couple things.

    by the great one

Otomo was working on Steam Boy, but the dropped it for a minute to produce Metropolis with Rin Taro. He's supposed to go back and finish Steam Boy after promoting Metropolis, I think. As for Spriggan, AD Vision is supposed to be doing a premeire for it during the 1st or 2nd week of September before taking it on the art house tour. Check out anime news sites or ADV's page for more info.
