Toronto Film Fest Lineup Unveiled!
Greetings, citizens! HREF=mailto:robogeek@robogeek.com>ROBOGEEK here... and holy crap I wish I was going to Toronto this year!
326 films will screen at the 26th Toronto International Film Fest this September 6-15, and you can check out the impressive lineup for yourself here.
I mean, where to even begin? Browsing the list is dizzying, though several highlights did jump out at me...
Of course, there are the Gala Presentations of the Hughes' Bros.' FROM HELL, Scott Hicks' HEARTS IN ATLANTIS, Peter Chelsom's SERENDIPITY, and Istvan Szabo's TAKING SIDES. Then there's Alfonso Cuaron's Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and - how cool is this? - midnight screenings of Christophe Gans' LE PACTE DES LOUPS ("The Brotherhood of the Wolves").
Plus, there are Special Presentations of Guillermo del Toro's EL ESPINAZO DEL DIABLO ("The Devil's Backbone"), Jean-Pierre Jeunet's LE FABULEUX DESTIN D'AMÉLIE POULIN ("The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulin"), David Mamet's HEIST, as well as Rick Linklater's TAPE and WAKING LIFE. And there are documentaries like George Ratliff's HELL HOUSE, Arthur Bradford's HOW'S YOUR NEWS, and Justine Shapiro, B.Z. Goldberg and Carlos Bolado's PROMISES.
And I haven't even touched on the massive Contemporary World Cinema program yet!

...about this film festival, judging by the lack of Talkbackers.
Doesn't surprise me though, seeing the quality of the responses in all the other Talkback sections, the average intelligence is far too low to be interested in such a topic.

Sadly, this year may be the first in 5 years (other than when I was overseas) that I haven't gotten the full festival pass (about 35 movies in 8 days) - but I will still see more than my fair share of films. What makes the TIFF so great is the access for the average filmgoer - you may not be able to see the showing of Heist at the Uptown 1 (the best cinema in the world), but you can always get in to see something - and the Midnight Madness shows rock!! Where else can you see a Thai sci-fi film where the aliens die because THEY HAVE NO SPLEEN!! And the programmers make sure that its not all pretentious artsy stuff - I discovered Trey Parker here at a midnight showing of Orgazmo - before South Park hit the airwaves in Canada. - If you want to know about me - and others like me, see the hilarious short film on the TIFF website called "The Audience" by Don McKellar.

Toronto was the place where American Beauty and Crouching Tiger began their big success stories. What will emerge this year? Though it's been showing in Europe for several months, I'm looking at Amelie to grab the big prize. But the surprise hit could be Novocaine. Call it a hunch.

I read an article about the TIFF in today's copy of the Toronto Sun rag - er, newspaper. What rots is having to work a night shift while living in the Greater Toronto Area. Thus I'm only able to see as many of the films as I can, rather than as many of the films as I want. And that Don McKellar short, is that the one where a voice-over talks while the camera roams around individual theatre audience members before the show starts? I think I saw it on The Movie Network.
