A JOYRIDE Reviewer Enjoyed The Ride!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Try saying that five times fast...

Hi Moriarty,

Here's my short JOY RIDE review, which hopefully gets people interested in that movie, because it's really worth seeing it. It would be nice if you could also post the link to our own little movie website www.cinemaniacs.de in which we invest a lot of our private time. There will also be a full-length German review later this evening on that site. And you can call me ThomasB if you want to. Now enjoy the review.

Last night I had the opportunity to see the Horror Thriller JOY RIDE in a sneak preview. When the title appeared on the screen, I didn't know what to expect, because I had no idea what the movie would be about. I remembered, that I heard the title once, but wasn't interested enough to get more information about it. Actually that was the best that could have happened to me, because the movie makes a lot more fun, when you don't know any of the twists. Therefore you should avoid to watch the trailer. I downloaded it when I returned from the movie theater last night and I have to say that it gives too much away.

The movie starts with a telephone conversation between longtime friends Lewis (Paul Walker) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski) in which he spontaneously decides to visit her. On the way he picks up his older brother Fuller (Steve Zahn), a trouble-maker who has just been released from prison (again). During a driving break, Fuller has the brilliant idea to get a CB radio installed to have some fun with other drivers. Soon they make contact with a truck driver and decide to play a trick on him. But when the whole thing doesn't turn out as planed, they have to realize that the strange trucker is a psychopath who is not in the mood for childish games or stupid jokes. I guess that's all you need to know about the plot.

With JOY RIDE John Dahl made a real edge of your seat thriller that is going to surprise you more than once during its short runtime. It seems very difficult to write a fresh and exciting horror script these days, so it's very comforting to see that it is stll possible. Although it reminded me a bit of Steven Spielberg's DUEL this movie was full of original ideas and also very well directed. Walker, Zahn and Sobieski did an excellent job in being realistic characters that act like one would do in such an extreme situation.
According to the imdb there are three different endings to this movie. Hopefully the one I've seen yesterday is the one they use for the final release because it was just perfect.

In comparison to THE HOLE and JEEPERS CREEPERS, two other excellent horror thrillers I've seen during the last weeks, I recommend JOY RIDE the most. Go see it as soon as you've got the chance.

Bye

ThomasB

YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE MOVIE PREVIEW!

BUT IT LOOKS GOOD SO I WILL STILL GO SEE IT

  • Sounds as bad as "My Little Vampire" with that kid from Jerry Maguire. What the hell is that film about anyway? The trailer looks intriguing until the catchphrase "Whats Eating You" pops up. Then it looks like all those studio contrived pieces of shit. As for Joyride...I'm not so confident in Steve Zahn after "Saving Silverman", an awful piece of shit...but Joyride looks alot more interesting than that. And whats with the trailer showing Lelee gets captured by the truck driver? Why not show the whole fucking movie then? Alright...I'm done ranting...for now...

    Jeepers Creepers SUCKED

    by stantheman

    Hi all,

Jeepers Creepers was the biggest pile of JUNK I've seen this year so far! Yet I was to that Sneak as well, and liked Joy Ride also! So, enjoy the film anyway.

Joy Ride has a certain quality in its basic idea (which is not really new, but which idea is?) and the pace is okay for a little movie like this. In my eyes, it's a little too slow altogether, but the conflict that is constructed is worthwile.

Oh come on, YOU`VE GOT TO BE KIDDING !!!!!

This sorry excuse for a movie is the worst pile of sh.. EVER to appear on a Sneak Preview Night.
You did not, by any chance, see this travesty of a movie in Munich

The first 30 mins of JEEPERS CREEPERS...

    by talkbacktornado

... are quite ok. Then ... it all goes down the well (in this case: the hole)... no more tension anywhere. SAD! Most of the characters that are introduced from that point on are totally underdeveloped, and, more sadly, uninteresting and boring. The finale is (surprisingly) quite nice ... and yeah, if this sucka makes decent money (2000 copies) ... JC2 is a sure bet.
tt out. (tt likes Gina Philips ... YUMMY)

    John Dahl's RED ROCK WEST

    by hagrid1

Back when Nicolas Cage was making good movies, John Dahl made this little gem with Cage, a then-barely-known Lara Flynn Boyle and an-actor-at-the-top-of-his-game known as Dennis Hopper called Red Rock West. It's a great little film noir, with more twists in it than a box full of pretzels. Some may say it's a bit contrived, but I think the contrivances add to the movie. It's basically a movie about a moral guy looking for work on an oil rig in the MidWest who's desperation for some dough leads him to do something immoral. Just a little white lie really, but one that sets off a great chain of events. When I saw this movie, I became infatuated with John Dahl's work, and with the exception of Unforgettable (Ray Liotta), I consider him a pretty solid filmmaker. Go check this out before Joyride, and you might like that new movie even more. (BTW, his most recent work I think was ROUNDERS, which I really liked as well).

    The Hitcher.

Did you see the Hitcher? Man, that was a cool movie! Nope, haven't seen it? Then right now, turn off the computer, high tail it to the video store and rent it. You will do yourself a big favor, plus you won't need to see this pile of crap.

    You're welcome.

Did the killer in "The Hitcher" have a motivation?

    by elgyn6655321

I don`t think they ever said what was up with him.

I've seen the film in Munich, too. It is neither the worst pile of shit nor an edge of your seat thriller as Thomas B suggests. It's just an ordinary horror film.

There's nothing really original in it and it's as predictable as almost every horror film, yet it's quite entertaining. If you enjoy horror films, if you see a lot of them and if you're used to the genre's mediocre standards you may consider this a pretty good film. Although I don't watch many horror films I think I can say that Joyride is above the genre's average. I probably wouldn't have bought a ticket if I had known what film I was about to see.

Comparing it with this year's other evil truck driver film I must say that I enjoyed Jeepers Creepers (also as Sneak Preview) much more than Joyride, and that's not only because I've seen Jeepers before Joyride.

And about the worst film to appear at Munich Cinema's Sneak Preview I'd say last week's "Driven" was worse. However I've only seen half an hour of that one before I left.

    by harrz

Oops. If you're not a fan of horror films you absolutely don't need to see Joyride. That sentence somehow got lost in my previous post. It was supposed to be between "above the genre's average" and "I probably wouldn't have bought a ticket".

    ACTUALLY...

    by seattle sleww

From what I understand, The Hitcher's motivation to kill was largely attributed to the C. Thomas Howell Film Festival that he'd seen the night before. Now it all makes perfect sense.

Seems like we're all a Munich bunch of sneak-lovers... Let me post a question: Who do you think that movie was made for? Exactly, teenagers. Then, we've got a problem: What exactly does the genre "horror movie" describe? Classical horror movies are the Hammer films (Jimmy Sangster rules!), Frankenstein, Dracula and newer productions like Dawn of the Dead and so on. Recent so-called "horror" flicks don't even come close to what's possible or what can be done! That's the same with Joy Ride: It's just another teenie shocker without much of a plot and - behold - even less background. Fits right into the "Scream" scheme, as do all the films specially designed for the Nintendo generation. So, the great misunderstanding is the genre: Joy ride is an acceptable and enjoyable teenie shocker, but a bad and predictable horror film.

    Motivation of the killer

    by stantheman

The killer did have a WEAK motivation: Being humiliated by that practical joke. But, man, that's really weak. The truck driver in "Duel" did not have a motivation either, but we don't get that close to him: he doesn't need a motivation. Maybe the killers motivation in Joy Ride was his job and he was representing the conflict between the working class and the upper class, that's at least what the critics wanted to see in "Duel" (which Spielberg didn't want to construct).

I stand corrected, Joy Ride is a teenie shocker not a horror film. I'm not a fan of any of these genres and stuff them into one big bucket to easily. That's why I'm usually pretty bored by the Fantasy Filmfest. Can you recommend some must-see films of this year's program? By the way, as this is a Munich movieguide talkback right now, just in case you don't know it, I can only recommend the Filmpassage at the Isartor. The best video store I know, they have all films I wan't to see (just rented Memento) in their original versions and a living movie encyclopedia. You should listen to his recommendations. And one last thing about Jor Ride. At the beginning I wasn't sure if that was the title. Joy Ride could also be the name of a porno "actress" making her "serious movie" debut ;o)

    John Dalh sucks

    by areo_zeppelin

John Dahl always has and always will make crap. I hope that he chokes on my cock as he gives me head because he is a little head giver, that he is. Plus, Rounders was awful because Matt Damon was in, and everyone knows he herds nerfs with the best of them, if you catch my drift. Also he made a movie with Linda I look like a man and suck really hard Fiorentino. That is so true that John Dahl sucks. Plus steve zahn licks balls.
