CLARIFICATION Re: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS Rating & Running Time!!

Published at:  Aug 19, 2001 11:34:23 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Okay. It occurs to me after reading the way someone else reacted to a recent article here that I might need to clarify what I originally said here.

Over on TheOneRing.net, they took me at my literal word, thinking I meant the film was done. And that is what I said. But I was imprecise.

The film that was shown to the MPAA to get a rating and that has been locked at a 2 hour 45 minute running time is not finished in terms of all the layers of polish that will be laid on between now and release. There's a shitload of music work and FX work and color timing and other things still to be done. When they locked the print on Tuesday night and Mark Ordesky celebrated (understandably), they were just locking the actual content of the film. I won't celebrate in a similar manner until the day the film opens, because that's about when they'll finally wrap up all work on it. That Christmas release date isn't just arbitrary torture. They will need that time to do everything possible to make this the dense, amazing, immersive experience that they want it to be.

I'm still planning that black ops mission, though. I've had volunteers galore, and if we have to do wet work, we will. I want that three-hour videotape, unfinished or not...

"Moriarty" out.

    by randy(ask randy)

Professor, if you need more minions for this mission, let me know! As both an LA resident and reasonable Kevin Smith lookalike, I think I'd be a valuable asset to the team. And "wet work"? If some must be sacrificed so that we can see LOTR ahead of everyone-then I'm prepared to make that sacrifice of others.
Let me know if you need help in this endeavor or anything in the realm of weapons and toys! We can rendezvous at Creature Features. Signing off, Prof!

Some people just don't understand .

    by thephantomcat

Why is it that whenever somebody posts some info about a movie it always ends up becoming the subject of controversy? Nothing in the movie industry is black and white. If that was the case, the Pearl Harbor should have blown Titanic out of the water and all of America would have been, "Shrek who?" Also, for those of you who SERI0USLY think that it is in the best interest of FOTR to be 3 hrs and 15 min, you need to sit down and watch a 2 hrs and 45 min movie. Hey math majors, that's only a thirty minute difference and plenty of room for a deleted scenes section or an extended special edition a la T2: The Ultimate Edition. In closing, everytime I read LOTR it gets better and better. Thanks Harry for the LOTR news.

among delays, apart from 'polishing' is re-recording and post-synching all dialogue because of faults in studio sound in NZ. Being done in secret even as we type in NYC, as it contravenes all kinda union aggreements and equity by-laws. Footage looks spectaculat tho'. At last a movie worth sitting thru this year.

not to sound obnoxious, but the movie getting my money christmas day will be royal tenenbaums, just cuz i think anderson makes the best movies out there. and while i'm a LOTR fan and anxiously await it, i have higher expectations for TRT. and i'm sure LOTR will make a billion more, and i won't have to wait in any lines. peace.

Save the black ops work for mid-October

    by pallando blue

Because THAT'S when the finished print will be in existence. I read somewhere that mid-October's their drop-dead deadline, because that's how early they need to start reproducing the film for worldwide distribution. Never before has there been a simultaneous worldwide launch, and so never before have all 10,000+ prints been necessary to have on hand at once. Which includes all the foreign-language dubbing, which itself includes foreign distributers voice-casting and recording, and restting of subtitles from English when Elvish is being spoken, et cet-ay-ra, et cet-ay-ra. So they can't be tweaking the effects on into Thanksgiving and beyond. SO, mid-October is when you can start sweating the fact that there are thousands and thousands of prints of the completed FOTR, rolling out of a machine somewhere... Just don't accidentally swipe the Swahili print. Unless, of course, you are and/or speak and/or prefer Swahili.

Just to head the inevitable B.O. debate off at the pass,

    by pallando blue

Not with my own predictions (which are purty rosy) but with assurances from the New Line honcho himself that there's nothing to worry about on their end. From Shaye's own mouth, in an Ebert Cannes article: "Everyone thinks we've bet the company [on their $200+ mil LOTR investment]" he says, "but after selling the international rights, the video and the after-markets, we're 85 percent covered. What kills me is the cost of sequels. `Rush Hour' cost us $32 million. It's a hit, so we make a sequel. The sequel costs $92 million." Let me highlight the important part: "WE'RE 85 PERCENT COVERED." And I think we can agree he's talking about the entire trilogy's investment, not just Fellowship, as they're not individually financed. So basically, on their end, New Line's going to be getting nothing but gravy for years on end. Who honestly doesn't believe that the cost of the whole trilogy isn't going to be covered by Fellowship's grosses alone? Not to mention FIFTEEN PERCENT of it? I think it's safe to say that PJ and Weta will be getting whatever funds from New Line they ask for to complete FX on the next two installments. What we as LOTR fans need to be rooting for B.O.-wise is every OTHER New Line release, especially the high-profile ones. $92 mil to make Rush Hour 2?? MAN was I happy with that opening weekend--still nervous after the Little Nicky and Town & Country debacles. Not fair to have LOTR do ALL the work--cause that'll be what makes the execs squirrely and intrusive. (Also helps that Shaye's a fellow Tolkien geek!)

I certainly hope the 2:45 sticks, and a question about wanting t

    by halloween68

Some good points there Pallando Blue about the budget and expenses aspect of the movie. I side with you in hoping that New Line doesn't have any more doosies over the next few years that will suck anything away from Rings. I think you're right though when you say that this movie, as it's pretty much already covered, will make a mint for PJ, his team, the actors, and New Line. I'm sure there'll be no complaints. But big time query here for all... Why do they need to dub anything? What about subtitles? I'm a beleiver that a movie should stay in its original language. I think it can take away from the atmosphere and the acting involved in the film. I know that I would not have appreciated Crouching Tiger no where near as much if I had seen a dubbed version of it. Anyone else feel the same way? The only reason I can think for possibly wanting to dub it is so the foriegn audiences can better distinguish and therefore appreciate the elvish and dwarven languages. But then again, it sounds as if even the English languages were concerned with specific dialects. Ahhh, the details of these films... But, hey, anyone else feel the same way here about the dubbing?

Could be worse about the dubbing, Halloween68

    by pallando blue

I'm happy as long as they don't dub English over the Elvish. Har! Now that would make for some funny DVD extra scenes. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, some strange woman's voice is talking over Cate's dialogue, lips completely out of sync... Anyway, I agree with what you say about dubbing v. subtitles, but I have no idea what non-English speaking countries prefer--maybe it's a cultural thing? Anyway, here's a bit from the E!Online report on the international prep: http://www.eonline.com/Features/Specials/Lordrings/Location/010801d.html

How can it be rated if the music's not done?

    by phronk

What if they get Eminem to do the soundtrack at the last minute? And the effects aren't done either, so what if they add a few CG orc schlongs? That would change the rating, methinks.

    Regal Cinemas BS

    by davenx01

I don't know how it is in your guys area. But Regal Cinemas pretty much dominates my area, there is only 1 Century Cinemas on the far side of the city, and a bunch of little theatres with no decent sound system.

I had to go through an 1 1/2 hr traffic to see Rush Hour 2.

Now why I'm posting this is, for those who don't know, Regal Cinemas (The largest thearte chain in the country), is having a fight with New Line Cinemas (the distributor of LOTR), NL is charing a little more for distribution than they did before, and Regal said they weren't going to pay it. So NL said that Regal can't show any of their movies. Despite this Rush Hour 2 made over 67 Mil on its opening weekend (I'm sure it would have made more if not for this Regal problem). Whats need to be done is getting Regal to wake up and come to a deal with New Line, or LOTR will not be shown in Regal Cinemas.

Hey: DaveNX01....you must live in Portland, OR

    by smugbug

Well, the closest theater showing RH2 is Cinemagic. It's a little old-time theater that was renovated some years ago. It still has the rocking seats. Well, it's just a few blocks from where we live and that's where we saw RH2 last week. Which is so sweet, cuz afterwards, we could walk up the street to our favorite watering hole and have beers and "discuss" the movie. So, I won't object to FoTR showing at Cinemagic! Sure, there's no wall to wall screen, stadium seating, whatever - but those rocking seats are VERY comfy! And a BIG box of Mike & Ikes cost just a buck.

    Regal Sucks for PDX

    by ohgirl99

DaveNX01 and Smugbug, as another Portland resident who's not fond of Regal Cinemas, don't you agree that the coolest thing would be if the Eastgate were reopened to show Fellowship of the Ring? It was a sad day when our largest screen closed. The seats on the right side theater were those nice padded rockers too. I know, it's not gonna happen, but a girl can dream. Ah well, we can all go see it at the dinky-but-cute Cinemagic and go grab a drink at Smugbug's watering hole afterwards.

    Miami...

    by bg

...it just so happens that I bought myself a VHS copy of Bakshi's LOTR last Saturday (cost me NZ$19.95, which works out to about US$8.30). The last time I watched it was over 8 years ago so I thought I'd better refresh my memory in the run up to the release of it's (hopefully) infinitely superior successor. After my first viewing I was left with one observation and one question lingering in my head. The observation was, "Man, Bakshi's Orcs suck!", while the question was, "Why does the first Black Rider Frodo encounters walk like the hunch back of Notre Dame?"

    Spit Spot?

    by drlocrian

Anyone who would think to quote from _Mary Poppins_ really should avoid advising others to "get a life." Of course, I recognized the line in the first place, so who am I to talk... *** Aaaanyway, the new Hobbiton video is *really* fantastic! I'm sure that Pip's Diamond is pleased with the Astin interview (right, Pip's D?), and McKellen's line at the end just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. *** All this nonsense about Box Office figures bores me. I'm with the people who don't really care if the films outsell the SW or Harry Potter franchises as long as they are simply FANTASTIC. I'm *certain* they won't flop, and they'll certainly make a profit, but aside from that, I don't really care if the masses of humanity make it the most popular film series ever or not. Why this pointless competition on the basis of BO gains? I mean, you need only look at a movie like TITANIC to realize that Box Office totals do not necessarily have ANYTHING to do with film quality. **** As some may vaguely remember, I used to be EXTREMELY critical of Peter Jackson and the chances that his films would be any good. Since then, I've read and seen probably what a lot of you have read and seen. That is: countless interviews, articles, photos, and blurbs concerning the films. And while I don't agree with EVERYTHING the filmmakers have apparently done, I couldn't really be allot happier with the way it seems to be shaping up. With SW: The Phantom Menace, I think some fans were disappointed with a convoluted, sometimes boring script and often wooden characterizations (that stated, it wasn't *really* bad, imo). With the Rings "Trilogy" (don't blast me), we Tolkien readers already *know* the story and characters are amazing (and, from all interviews and sources, PJ and Co are [usually] being extremely faithful to the books). We also know that the design and effects are phenomenal(Cannes, anyone?), and we know that at least a good percentage of the actors are some of the best in the business (both Ians, Chris Lee, etc). I'll be danged if I'm not going into this with open eyes, and, by Eru, from all I've seen and heard, I AM excited about these films! This is ENTIRELY different from the Phantom Menace debacle and other similar hype/letdown, film situations of the past. Please feel free to ridicule me and others like me in four months time if the first film isn't terrific. But imo that just ain't gonna happen.

...the silliest being (according to http://www.herr-der-ringe-film.de/artikel.asp?feedbackid=681) 'Sam slashes at orcs on the steps of Cirith Ungol. He guts one orc, tosses it over the edge and mutters: "That one's for the Gaffer." '. Why?Don't do that, please. Pithy one-liners after dispatching your enemy is sooo Rainier Wolfcastle. Hmmm, some of the other plot tweaks (re Boromir, especially) sound OK to me though. Makes more explicit what's just implied in the text, yadda yadda....
