Jeff Bridges Spills A Wee Bit Of TRON Sequel News!!

Published at:  Aug 17, 2001 3:00:17 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

The guys over at Moviehole just dropped us a line with a wee bit of news about TRON 2. I have no idea what the actual title of the piece is going to be, but now we know a little bit more about Jeff Bridges' role. Here's what they had to say:

Bridges agent tells me "Jeff did an interview for the Tron DVD last week, wearing his Tron hat. They told him there about the sequel. Apparently his part is being written like Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now. The other guy (Martin Sheen?) is looking for him but he's fully entered the cyber world. It sounded like fun and Jeff is interested. We'll see..."

If they're using Kurtz as the template for Bridges' character this time out, that could be a lot of fun. TRON isn't a great film... hell, it's like a cinematic quaalude if you screen it at the wrong time... but it was remarkable for when it was made and for the world it created. If they can create something equally striking and hallucinatory for this new movie, then maybe they'll actually justify revisiting this world. Let's hope, eh? Until then...

"Moriarty" out.

Al-ight Olla 's clock seems strangely offset from intitcoo's

    by smilodon

what I'm sayin' is, A-igh Oll says he was first at 3:53, but intitco's clock is equivalent to 4:04. So, is A-ig Ol's clock right, or is intitc's? I would guess that A-i O's clock is more likely to be wrong than is intit's, 'cuz, you know, A-i is just a guy, and intit is an actual website. Yeah, inti is a great website. int is the best!

A remake would be pretty useless

    by smilodon

Because the main cool thing about the original was simply the idea of cyberspace, which was a pretty novel concept at that time in the movies, at least as I thought as a kid at that time. Now, the plot of the original would be too damned thin and boring. Thus, a remake is insufficient, and at least a "reimagining" would be needed that adds much more beef, but by the time so much new stuff is added, it will barely still be a "reimagining" because it'll seem like a whole new movie.

    The "evil" AI

    by lelon

I've always thought the movies seem to just skip over how these AI's always wind up being evil. Matrix, Terminators. We always get dropped in after the fact. And "AI" (which i really didn't like) dealt with something totally different. A Tron remake (or a Tron 2) would be a great opertunity. This idea of the giant AI that all of a sudden turned evil has just been reused to the point where we don't even ASK how it happened.

    Perfect Director for this Film...

    by orwellian

I think that the perfect person to do a Tron flick would be
Tarsem, the director of The Cell.

    tron o rama

    by jeff bailey

Ya know, I didn't actually see Tron til I was like 23 or 24 a couple years ago. Honestly, the script is thin (though fun), the real world sequences incredibly pedestrian, and the technology way dated. However, Bridges was good as always and I dug the love triangle. And I will say this, I think it's infinitely better looking then almost ALL the CGI crap we get thrown at us. The visuals are actually quite stunning. And I have to say the light cycle scene was thrilling. I would check out this movie even though I am not a rabid fan. And bring back Boxleitner (SNL:"Going to grab a bagel with Bruce Boxleitner.") He's cool in a retro way and he needs the work! And on a personal note, the girl next to me at work who just turned 20 recently asked what Tron even is...Who's dated NOW huh?

Bugger this, I want Bridges to finally star as Lawrence Block's

    by cash bailey

Block himself has written the script and says that Bridges is a sure thing to play Keller.

    Too COOOL...

I love the idea of having Flynn come back in the sequel. Think about it, if you discovered a whole cyberworld back in 1980 where they worshipped programmers as gods, and you WERE a programmer in the real world, what would you be doing for the next twenty years? I know I'd be writing code like mad to figure out a way to write code from WITHIN this world; thereby making myself a living god in this world. My every desire and need would instantly be fulfilled. This would be even better than the set-up that Kurtz had in 'Nam. I think the question that begs to be answered is WHO is going to send the Martin Sheen character to the cyberworld to find Flynn and why? But then, perhaps I've already answered the why question. Flynn, through his actions to make himself a god of the cyberworld, becomes that which he dispised: the MCP. This movie could, if done right, ROCK!

I've never even seen Tron. I don't know why. I was a teenage mutant ninja video-game addict in the eighties, and yet Tron passed me by...can't explain it. I remember Automan, though. That was cool. But not as good as Manimal.

Tron probably would have been a much better film if Disney hadn't been involved. Tron had some interesting aspects to it. I thought the musical score was cool, combining a digitial synthesized sound with a kind of religious, church choir-like music, and probably more reflective of what the film could have been. It seemed, however, Disney was just trying to show off the computer generated special effects. Tron had potential.

To me TRON is a gret film

    by ogreishere

I have three reasons to say this...
    1. It took me to a world i had never seen before or since for that matter.

    2. The action was damn cool. Cmon how can you not love those light bikes. That is one of the best car chase sequances in movie history.

    3. It follows Howard Hawks rule for a great movie 3 Great scenes and no bad ones. Great scene
    1. Jeff Bridges being taken to the cyber world.
    2. The afore mentioned light bikes.
    3. The final showdown.

Mmmmmmm, Harry, no. Tron is actually a brilliant movie, and that is true even in total detachment from any personal and emotional feelings towards it, and any considerations of its great technical prowess. One of the best sci-fi films ever made.

Is Hollywood that out of ideas?

    by bigw

Not saying it can't be good, but man, making sequels for very old, mediocre movies (albeit one I like). Maybe they shouldn't have fired all the writers.

tron the movie and it's sequel

    by sysyphus

the thing that made Tron one of my favorites is that i had
a shitload of computer knowledge for a kid back in 1981,
so when i saw the movie every technology inference
    made it all the better.
Tron was the first time i allowed artistic license to take me
beyond accepted reality of this world (ie the sail skiff on the beam of data etc).

my experiences have always verified that anyone who gripes about Tron suckin' couldn't tell
the difference between boolean and bananas, kilobits and corn grits, a data port and their asshole.

the acting was corny at times and the graphics can be compared to a sleek version of space invaders, but
the story integrated a lot of computer architecture and system performance into the plot so that tech geeks
like me and my friends could follow along in our imagination a thousand times better than with typical movies.

lets hope the sequel makes it look like The Empire Strikes Back made A New Hope look.
