Does anyone else think she looks way out of place in this movie? Willing to give MS the benefit of the doubt, but her look is soooo contemparary, where DiCaprio and Day-Lewis seem to fit right in...

YEEEEEEEEEEHA!!! The return of Daniel Day-Lewis the Master!!

    by the grin

What a master of voices. I'd
love to hear Lewis and Christopher Guest have a showdown of voices and accents. - - Looks elaborate, moody, and very intense. Even though this year has been the longest cinematic drought I've experienced...looks like the Autumn and the holiday season are going to make up for it in so many ways.
AND KENNETH LONERGAN'S INVOLVED!! At least we know the script will be good.
    The Grin
    positively beaming.

    But...

    by bowendesign

I think that this movie looks bloody fantastic, although there seems to be a spate of films that boast period detail but always seem to be that little bit too flashy. This is Hollywood grit on show, not the true grit of the time. Is it me or do the sets look a little too much like sets? Is it because they filmed most of it on soundstages? I had this problem with Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. I understand what he was getting at with the production design (it's my line of work, and I saw the blueprints as it was being made - knew the ending almost a year before, but didn't know AICN), but the fantasy was spoilt by the odd exterior settings. I want to be put in the films dreamworld, not woken up by it!

    by mod29

On my comp, WITH a cable modem, quicktime is ALWAYS choppy and horrible... the window's media is the way to go! its never choppy and can get pretty big without messing up the quality of the image!! The trailer, on the other hand, wasn't that good. I'll still see it though.

a bit on the 3 stars

    by vlad the impaler

    1. De Lewis can play anybody and still remain one of the best actors ever.
    2. Cameron can play anybody and still remain an ex-model that looks good but can't act.
    3. If DiCaprio thinks that his ugly looks in this movie will help him shake off the typecasting, he needs to come back to what made him great in Gilbert Grape.

Good to know. Now I can spend time thinking about how kickass it's gonna be and not just about the time period. AND NO DISSING 'AGE OF INNOCENCE,' YOU FUCKERS! THAT'S ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN, ALONG WITH MOST OF SCORCESE'S OTHER MOVIES! Yes, that got me riled up.

Yes, oh yes. I have a feeling this might have a sort of lasting appeal along the lines of "Scarface." I agree with the last person -- when the hell does summer end?!

When the trailer came on Entertainment Tonight, I didn't have the sound on so I had no clue what it was. From the visuals I thought it was a frickin musical! Anyhoo, is it just me or did Daniel Day look like the love child of the CAT-IN-THE-HAT AND WILLIE WONKA?!? Leo Dicaprio looked dead like KID ROCK!! Too Bad "Gangs of New York" ain't a musical!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! BA-WITH-A-BA-WITH-A-DANG-DI-DANG-DIDDY!!!!

    For your information....

    by lemato

LENNY - Gangs takes place during the corrupt Tammany Hall period of the 1840's - 60's when street gangs were used to enforce their power.
VLAD - Leo's look in Gangs is the look SCORSESE envisioned when he created the character of Amsterdam Vallon of a poor, tough, street gang leader seeking revenge for his father's death. If you think it's a purposeful attempt at breaking a stereo-type then blame Scorsese not Leo.
BAHAMUT - speak for yourself. I don't need to be saved from Leo.I think he's a great actor and look forward to seeing him in movies in the future.

I looked very different from what I expected, yes, musical comes close to describe it. It's hard to tell at this stage but I have a bad feeling about it. Especially about Cameron Diaz.

    by heywood jablomie

Doesn't look too good, but then the trailers for Scorsese movies rarely look good (remember how lame the Goodfellas trailer was?)...how can that be? The Jay Cocks draft of this movie rocked: it was like a Wild West version of Fellini Satyricon--sci-fi, taking place in an alternate universe that was the American past. The presence of Steven Zaillian and (eek) Kenneth Lonergan don't bode well. But we love ya, Marty! Save the movies!

  • It was played out way back with Cliffhanger, now it's competing with the Come See the Paradise music as the biggest trailer cliche of all time. This is fucking a Martin Scorsese picture, not Renny Harlin!

Does anyone know where that music comes from?

    by drath

I liked it better in full gear on the trailer for The Professional(aka Leon) but I'd still like to know what it is. It sounds a bit like "O Fortuna," but it's not. And why oh why is there ALWAYS someone on these talkbacks who smashes great choir driven music in trailers? It works most of the time like the Planet of the Apes trailer--though certainly not always, the Musketeer was a bit much. If you don't like it, and want it banned, could you tell me what it is first since you seem to know it so well?

  • This is going to be a hard sell for Miramax. This is a 90 million doller art film. I think the look of the movie reminds me of the last Emperor. Trailer's aren't suposed to make film geeks salivate thier surposed to get ass's in seats.

    by batutta

And its not the use of choral music that bugs me, it's the use of that particular track! It bothers me because it shows a stunning lack of creativity on the part of the trailer editors.

This movie is going to kick ass too bad that it opens so close to Lord of the Rings ever fucking D and D playing tape glass wearing 400 pound Jabba will be sleeping on the street to watch that while Gangs will probably only get enough to cover costs.

Hopefully this will be successful at the box office and from what I hear a killer at oscars. ITS TIME TO GIVE IT TO MARTIN!!!!

Wow, nice directing, nice imagery/costumes, horrible music/sound (that's just in this plain old bad quality trailer), why did they have to use dicaprio?? what's wrong with....uhh someone older that doesn't come off as such a wuss when he supposed to be a outlaw gang member and that is worthy of having cameron diaz, what the hell is with the starting of that trailer???, I wonder what ed norton would be like in that role hmmm......anyways, KICK ASS 2 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES OF LOTR THIS WINTER YAHOO!!!

  • I have to say that this movie has me a little worried... mostly because of Cameron Diaz. I like her in certain films (Being John Malkovich, A Life Less Ordinary, etc.) but she isn't right for every part. However, I do think Daniel Day Lewis and Leo DiCaprio are great choices and hopefully their performances will make up for Ms. Diaz. But... who knows? I'll be there this Christmas just like the rest of you!
