Now Matthew Lillard LIES about Harry!!! Sheesh, must run in their production!

Published at:  Aug 17, 2001 10:36:32 AM CDT

Well folks, seems like the second half of the gruesome twosome has chimed in with LIES about me and SCOOBY DOO... interesting spin technique that these two have come up with. Here's what Lillard had to say:

Lillard also had a thought on Internet critics and Ain't It Cool News's
Harry Knowles, who has been a vocal critic of the production. "We got bad
buzz off the Internet ... [because of] the cast photo. And as powerful as
the Internet can be, it can also be ... painful. So Warner Brothers and
Scooby-Doo [stepped] in to try to alleviate some of the tension from that. A
lot of it was generated by this Harry Knowles guy. And this guy, for some
reason, is starting to run Hollywood. It's ridiculous. ... I don't know how
you can judge a movie if you've never even read the script. I don't know how
you can crush a film if you're Harry Knowles, if you have no f-cking idea
what you're talking about. The guy is a mook out in the middle of Texas or
something who's somehow got power. ... They flew him to Pearl Harbor to get
[in] his good graces, and then he turns around and says Pearl Harbor is one
of the best movies ever made." CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!!!

Well, though Lillard is certainly a far better actor than Freddie Prinze Jr, he seems to LIE just as badly! First off, I agree Matthew, I don't know how anyone could prejudge SCOOBY DOO without having read the script for the film... Guess What? I have! Not only that, but I've read 5 different drafts which got progressively worse, with each rewrite. Want proof? BEWARE OF HUGE SPOILERS!!! Highlight the below:

SCRAPPY DOO did it!!!!

As for PEARL HARBOR? They never flew me anywhere... they offered and I TURNED THEM DOWN, just like I would've done on your film. As for my review of PEARL HARBOR (Click Here To Read!) I enjoyed the film with great reservations... and went on for about 1200 words about what was wrong and needed to be cut out before I got to what I liked, which wasn't a whole bunch.

Now while Jason Lee was about a 1000 times better for the part of Shaggy than Lillard, our report on footage the other day says he's nailing it, while Prinze is again his typical non-entity. And while this film certainly seems to be the biggest pile of dung this side of SUMMER CATCH, like just about all films... I end up seeing them to cast a final fair opinion. And with SCOOBY DOO, I would love to believe that Freddie and Matthew were highly talented actors, I would love to believe that the script I have read was a thing of make-believe, and I would love nothing more than to go to the cinema next summer and love a movie called SCOOBY DOO, but frankly... that doesn't seem to be the reality of the situation.

    by yneway

Well I'll be damned. Anyway here's how to judge a movie without reading the script...if Matthew Lillard or Freddie P, are "stars", (by stars I mean most of the time the camera is pointed at them), the movie will suck. Granted they sometimes end up in an okay movie, but they can do anything with cgi these days. Looking for a laugh? Don't miss the cable television premiere of Wing Commander, Sunday night on SciFi. We're putting together a group suicide afterwards. Kool-Aid for everyone!

Alright, it's time for everyone to bow down and respect the Freddie. Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr. should be cast in every movie. Imagine a Fight Club remake starring the golden boys. With Freddie as Norton's character and Lillard as Brad Pitt's. Or how's this, a Batman remake "She's All Bat." Freddie is Batman, Lillard is The Joker. Freddie Prinze Jr. will one day be remembered as the greatest actor of our generation.

I work in Hollywood and am sick of this shit...

    by madceedub

Sorry to throw that "I work in Hollywood" bullshit out there, but I wanted to add a little credibility to my anger. This whole attack against the internet movie reviews is driving me nuts! If a movie is good, there would be no need to be on the defensive (Warner Bros., Freddie, and Matt). I can see it already: A few months from now we'll all see a teaser poster with Scooby's tail or something. It will have a catch tag line..."Get Scoobed Next Summer" or some dumb shit. Then the teaser will come out (which will not show one of the actors!) When the movie is close to opening, the full blown quick cut trailers will be released, not giving us a chance to see any real acting.

It will be Saturday night, nothing really to do except to see a movie.

"Hey, that Scooby Doo trailer looked kinda cool...let's check it out."

"But Freddie Prinze, Jr. is in it.."

"Yeah, but that shot with Scooby hanging off the cliff with the waves crashing below...AWESOME!"

So we/you/I fork out $10 bucks for an 80 minute film of pure shit. Look at what happened to this summer's movies with their great trailers (Pearl Harbor, A.I., Tomb Raider...cmon) Hollywood is a business, remember that. They do not care if the movie is shit. As long as the film makes $50-60 million opening weekend, there will be a sequel. And more money. Luckily there are a few filmmakers left who realize this. Let's try and support some movies that aren't supported by marketing worth more than the film itself.

Fuck Scooby Doo. And Fuck Freddy Prinze, Jr. I saw part of Head over Heels the other night and fell over laughing. Why in the hell was that movie made?

    Business.

    by no. 41

whole back-n-forth...I have no opinion on "Summer Catch" (except that Jessica Biel is uber-HOT) because it's not the type of movie I would see except on a dare...have seen exactly one FPJ movie ("I Know What You Did...") and experienced no significant pain...and I wouldn't touch "Scooby" with a ten-foot pole. But I know this: Matthew Lillard is one ugly mofo. Of course, he has more money than I do, so criticizing him is like a fanboy re-editing Lucas: a waste of time.

    Total PR Move

    by jinxo

I have to say in this situation I actually pity Matthew Lilard and Freddie P. Because guess what? They are being played. They as well as Harry are being used by the studio. This is nothing but a very subtle manuever to get Scooby Doo some media atttention and potentially defuse some of the negative press the film has been getting.

I refuse to believe this was all started solely by the actors in question. First of all, if it was just one actor mouthing off I might believe it was just a simple grudge situation. But its not, it's two of them. And both of them are largely uniformed on the subject they are talking about. They make all sorts of statements that Harry attributes as "lies". Harry was flown to the Pearl Harbor party and then gave it a good review, Harry hasn't read the Scooby Doo script... statements that if they looked at the site at all they would know were in error. Their statements are so uniformed as to be beyond lies one would make up purposefully. Why would they make up such specific statements? It is clear this is misinformation given to them from a third party that they readily believed and acted upon.

Here's how I see this coming about. Studio Bigshot sees that The Scooby Doo movie is in PR trouble. It is getting only low level attention and the attention it is getting is very negative. As I said above he needs to get the film more attention and hopefully diffuse the negative press. So he sets up his leading men to be little soldiers in his media war. He'll also need a "villain" for this little media battle. Who could possibly be (Sorry Harry) a bigger target than Harry, the film's biggest critic?

So you chat up around the set that the film is getting panned before its even out by this Harry Knowles guy. You put these chumps in the position of feeling that they are being wronged unfairly by an idiot and that they are in wholly in the right. Tell them Harry has been essentially bought in the past and that he's angry and spiteful because they didn't deign to indulge him. Tell them he's being super critical without even having SEEN the script. Get them all indignant and riled and then let them go mouth off to the press. Suddenly you get extra media attention in your favor. Young stars standing up for themselves against who they see as a "bully". The misinformation they're using gets out into the press and helps counteract the bad buzz making it seem uniformed and it makes the source sound like a gossipy jerk. And then hopefully then that source, Harry, will fire back and then it will go back and fourth, drawing attention to the movie but away from the actual "bad press".

But really, why would someone put their "stars" in such a position? I mean putting them out their to mouth off with half truths that could blow up in their faces? That's a bit risky. Survivor of the media fittest my friends. As Harry pointed out, when was the last time either of these guys put out a true Blockbuster? Even a mild hit? These guys are not A-list actors. They might be one day, but not yet. Doing this only helps test if you've got stars worth cultivating or not. Are these guy going to be a River Phoenix or a Corey Haimes? Well, try manipulating the sucker to your own ends and see how he handles it. Is he dumb enough to let you manipulate him? If he is how does he handle the media morass he gets himself into? Not so well? Well, then you know your not working with geniuses in the making. Its not like you're burning and wrecking a Johnny Depp. Look at the film choices he's made: crappy pap. No daring choices like a Depp or Phoenix. If he wrecks himself while helping your film, hey, so be it. I would bet good money you won't see the same sorts of quotes coming from Sarah Michelle Gellar. Why? Because she is smart enough to know better and not easily used.

So pity these poor bastards. They are being allowed to hang themselves for the sake of publicity for a crappy film. And even though you pretty much have to bite Harry, you really do have to respond to them, do so with an awareness that they're trying to play you as well.

Lillard's secret connection to Batman: Year One!!

    by drapocalypsephd

I don't know about the Scooby Doo script but I recently had the chance to read the Matthew Lillard draft of Batman: Year One dated 6/22/01 and in it Bruce Wayne is a 17 year old high school student trying to get laid. It stars that kid from Seventh Heaven as Batman and Haley Joel Osment as Robin, the young freshman Bruce takes under his wing. Alfred will be played by Pat Morita. Now thats a scoop!! **** "If he won't chase the ghost into the abandoned warehouse, what will 'Scooby Doo'?" --TLG

Of course Harry isn't running Hollywood. . .

    by renonevada2000

. . .Cuz if he was Prinze and Lillard wouldn't be staring in films, they'd be cleaning up popcorn boxes between shows. Sorry guys, while some of you may question things Harry has done in the past (Personally, I think he's been upfront about what perks he may have received, i.e. being flown to the premier of "Godzilla" or "Armageddon." While I may disagree with both of his reviews of those films, I know a lot of people who thought along his same lines who WEREN'T flown out to those premiers.), he's totally in the clear on this one. Harry has been very vocal about this project since before Michael Myers was attached to it. He's discussed his love for the cartoon and his growing dismay as each successive draft has gone further into the crapper in his opinion. Did Prinze or Lillard even bother to read the draft they were filming before they signed for this film? Neither of those two have a very good track record for picking scripts (Are they using the old Eeny, Meeny, Miney Moe method that Steven Segal seems to prefer?). For both of them to come out like this just stinks of Warner Brothers trying to desperately generate some counter spin.

The bottom line is this...and it's what all of you F*&^S in Hollywood as well as Harry better learn. It is a free country not some pc everyone say whats good state and it's everyones God given right to piss on everyone else!!! So if loser boys Matt and Fred can't take it??? too bad go find another line of worknot so public on sunset boulevard that involves a lot more kneeling and just a tad of bobbing. But this lazy susan of vomit turns both ways Harry. Just as you piss on those you don't like don't go getting all high and mighty when we piss on someone you like! You better grow some thicker skin on that bulk of yours. Let me tell you the more time you and these guys spend bitching about this crap the less time you spend posting actual NEWS and they spend pushing their turd of a film. The result IS NOT good for anyones career or most of our (your unloyal and often argumentative readers) sanity. I guess all I'm saying is you pissed on someone and they finally called you on it the way you were so proud of Kevin Smith for 'calling' us on it. by comedian

BE A MAN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! You insulted them they're now only counter atacking you. And I'm sorry to say it but Lilliard pretty much does have your number. I mean, I love ya Harry and I love this site but I can't just go along with all the mindless little 13 year old talkback monkeys who think you are a God just like I can't go along with the ones who just come here to tell you what a bloated sell out they think you are. But I will say that your handling of Scooby Doo has been in poor taste and has just made you look all the less credible and all the more foolish. I too was completely grossed out when I found out who they were casting for the principles in Scooby Doo. But I got over it. WE ALL HAVE. Let's just wait for a trailer for christ's sake. All this back and forth bitching between you and Kevin Williamson's cabana boys is too fucking silly. "I didn't say that!" "Yes, you did!" "Wahhh, Wahhh." Harry, please grow the fuck up! Because if you're letting little shit like this bother you than the world is gonna eat you alive come January when your show starts on Comedy Central. Toughen up, Go on a diet, do some fucking push ups. And then you can kick those two fuckers asses. THAT'S WHAT A MAN WOULD DO. What you're doing right now is what a whiney, spoiled, little weakling would do. BE A MAN. Even be the better man and just refuse to mention anything about Scooby Doo all. You've gotta rise above all this bullshit. I don't see why you and Freddie hate each other so much. Actually I guess he doesn't hate you because he probably doesn't give enough of a shit to. But the two of you are from similar situations in a way. His dad killed himself which totally fucked up his childhood. Your mom came to a tragic end herself. I know he's a shitty useless excuse for an actor but the fact that he keeps getting these parts isn't his fault it's "the machine's" fault. So what I'm basically trying to say is"DON'T HATE THE PLAYA, HATE THE GAME." I'm sure your "Kitten" would rather have a man than a whiney, clingy, needy little man-child. BE A MAN.

Their teeny-bopper fan base will remain in tact... until they grow up, of course, and the dudes are getting lucky to co-star in cancelled sitcoms and Lifetime movies. Incidentally, I've been having seizures everytime a commercial for SUMMER CATCH comes on, like that woman and Mary Hart a few years back. Sure, I don't have to see the movie, and I won't, but MUST I be wacked in the head with it every time I watch THE SIMPSONS?

how the hell old are these two boneheads? while i will give Lillard the nod for SLC Punk, he's too old to do just about any of the crap he seems too. wasn't he like 28 or 29 when i saw him on the daily show two and a half years ago for chissakes? he was in "hackers" after all, and i'm pretty sure angelina jolie and what's his head have aged. i don't give a hell about scooby (sorry gang), but i at least know he's to old to be who ever the hell he is... oh yeah, the weirdo stoner. way to extend yourself, Lillard. i haven't seen something that hilarious since that spy movie with Freddie Prinze Jr. how freakin' ironic.

Why so many here hate FPJr. and Lillard.

    by indyhu

It all goes back to Wing Commander. So many of us here kinda grew up on that game and all of it's successors. We beleived that Mark Hamil was now someone other than Luke Skywalker and we kicked Kilrathi ass with him. Then we finally hear that Chris Roberts is making a feature length movie. We were excited. We weren't even that worried when we heard that Freddie and Matt were in the movie (I hadn't even heard of AICN back then. So I don't know what Harry had to say back then). Heck, I even thought Matt could be a great Maniac. Not as good as Tom Wilson, but he's got those wild eyes. We felt we had been crapped upon afterwards. Freddie walked around the movie with his mouth open. What was that all about? Maniac was a maniac, but not the one we wanted. And this Pilgrim business, ughh! Somthing we loved had been changed, by it's creator no less, and his choices for the guy we lived vicariously through for years, sucked. Who do we blame? Chris Roberts? I don't see a whole lot of flames going his way. The studios? Well, we always blame the studios, and we keep going back to them for more. But Freddie, he follows up his sci-fi bow with a glut of puffy comedy-romances aimed at the "I love Leo DeCaprio" crowd. Which makes him all the more easier to dislike.
It's gonna be impossible for these fans to get past it, especially those who live in talkback forums to flame everything just makeselves look smart, well in their own eyes, at least.

If the movies they are in were any good they wouldn't have to lie about them to make them look good, they would be able to stand on their own. This does not seem to be the case if they are so worried about the quality about their movies that they have to make up lies and resort to calling names than maybe the readers of this site should boycott their films. (Not that many of the readers on this site would be dumb enough to see them anyway.)

    by kingkrypton

...but NOBODY wants Tim Burton to direct SUPERMAN. NOBODY. Even Harry thinks Burton's a total mismatch for the character, and said as much several times before. I certainly wouldn't want to see that hack turn Supes into the same cookie-cutter goth and ghoulish tripe he regurgitates in every single movie he makes. Burton makes Prinze and Lillard look talented by comparison. That said, I can't agree with Prinze and Lillard's attempts to trash Harry. Yes, he's trash-talked them on this site. But all they're doing is confirming what they're trying to cover up: that SCOOBY-DOO is not going to be a good movie. By trying to lash out at Harry, they're only confirming the film's lack of quality, as well as exposing their own fears about career longevity. That said, their time is almost up, and they know it. Unless SCOOBY-DOO is a success (and leads into Prinze playing the YEAR ONE Batman, as was suggested earlier this year), their careers are on the outs. This desperate "it's Knowles' fault are movies are failing" whining only shows that they know they ain't got the chops to last in the long haul.

If I Were Making A Film About A Beloved Childhood Icon I Wouldn'

    by the founder

cast Freddie Prinze And Matt Lillard as the main attractions.
Warners shot themselves in the foot and I think they are starting to realize it. If I were making Scooby Doo I would have put more thought into it, like for example; Scobby has appealed to about three or four generations of kids(that's not something a lot of cartoons can do)right! Well first I would get a writer that could best deliver the material, and pay homage to the original, I would cast likable actors that has mass appeal, and not limited to a certain demographic(Warners biggest mistake)or unknowns could work, because after all Scobby is the main star. You see WB the kids of today will want to see it, the kids of the last generation would want to see it, and the kids of the last two generations would want to see it, and not to mention a lot of them are parents themselves, so you know they are going to bring their little ones. I'm surprised you guys at Warners didn't think of this simple fact, but you cast Freddie and Lillard as the main stars? To be quite honest who gives a sh%t about either of them as actors save teen girls, and they are beginning to lose interest. Hell, just look at profit intake on Freddie's last couple of films. It was a poor move on your part Warners, but I won't say it's all bad, because Sarah Micheal Geller, and the actress playing Velma are fine, but we also read script reviews and reviews on rewrites that was less than thrilling, so that is another strike against the film. What's this about Sarah Micheal's character doing wire-foo, in a Scobby Doo movie? WTF?? Please let that be a rumor for your sake.
As i've said before, Harry has very little to no influence on what films I see, and when I heard that Freddie Prinze was cast in this movie my interest died in this project. I don't hate Prinze, infact I liked She's All That, and I know What You Did(it's fair to point out that I didn't see those movies because of him), but what I have seen of his other films, well they were garbage, and his acting skills are poor(in my opinion), and the films he does just doesn't interest me, and most of the people I know feel the same. Matt Lillard is decent, and I do like him, but his movie's are bad, not his acting, but the movies are just terriable. You guys at Warners have to know that an actors bad track record can cause people to steer clear of a movie they are going to be in. Maybe Scooby will be good I don't know, but I do know that I will not see this film, unless someone I trust and know says it's some good, but as of now I have no interest at all in your live action version of Scooby Doo.

I can't speak for everyone that comes to Harry's site, but I think I can speak for quite a few of us when I say that we do not follow Harry blindly, nor do we take his word on all the films he's reviewed, and scoops that he's gotton. I'm not some mindless drone, and I'm about as far from a geek as anybody can get. I don't live in my momma's basement, nor do I spend my entire exsistence fantasizing over tits and ass of the regular actresses that are mentioned here. I have job, wife ,and a kid that makes my life complete and you may be surprised but I suspect that a good deal of the people that post here do as well. I could care less that Prinze and Geller are an item, and I hope their marriage works out, and not petty to wish bad luck to them, because I wouldn't want anybody to do the same about me and my wife. Just watch what you say and who you include when you make dumb ass comments like that because, you don't know who's on the other side of this computer. To Harry, I may not agree with everything you post, but you do have my respect, and keep up the good work, when you actually do some good.

Then you would be in a position to save us from blatantly grotesque turdburgers, such as "The Animal" and "Rat Race" (proof that Hollywood producers have NO GODDAMN CLUE as to what anyone living east of the Rockies thinks). And while you're at it, can you use your Mighty Mookin' Mogul powers to arrange to have the Olsen Twins "wacked"? Pretty please? With sugar on top? Aw, c'mon!

I wonder what Freddie is gonna do when the film DOES come out and it DOES make it's expected smoking crater in the ground? Is he gonna bitch and moan and claim that the film WOULD have succeeded had it not been for that fat guy from Texas who monkeywrenched it by being such a Blue Meanie on his web site? by the alienist

It's so weird coming back tonight from the sneak preview of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and reading yet another diatribe against a Scooby Doo actor. You see, one of the underlying themes of J&SB movie is how internet nerds strike out at actors with unjustified venom from the mostly invisible and anonymous world of their browsers. Nerds, as Kevin points out, whose hatred really masks a jealousy and secret desire to actually be the person they're denegrading. Leave it to Mr. Smith to once again bring a pragmatic wiseness to the seeminly tunnel-visioned world of the fanboy.

I must give Harry, Freddie, Matt and the cynical geniuses that are the nation of talkbackers credit. For this whole feud, the back and forth, is brilliant theater. We have Mr Knowles, a renowned critic vs two "critical fucktoys", although I still think Lillard is guilty only by association. This would be a good idea for a screenplay, better yet a stage play, which I'd write if I didn't have so damn much on my plate. Harry, keep your head high, and we all know this feaud will be going on for months, just keep it fresh, don't back down and don't hesitate to rely on the brillaint sarcasm from your legions of followers, I'll be watching!
