GANGS OF NEW YORK Trailer Online!!!

Published at:  Aug 17, 2001 1:43:54 AM CDT

Hey folks, harry here... Just came back from a non-stop 4 hours of trailers brought to Austin by the amazing Anthony Timpson of New Zealand's INCREDIBLY STRANGE FILM FESTIVAL... A smorgasborg of exploitation and titilation and violence and horror and tales of yesteryear and of times yet to come... All trailers with one thing in common... They kicked ass.

While I can't provide a link to the entertainment I had upon the Drafthouse's sacred screen tonight, I can give ya a link to the new Martin Scorsese opus... a long time dream project of Marty's... GANGS OF NEW YORK.

The trailer feels a little flat, though that could be the shitty streaming Windows Media format... The thought that MIRAMAX is debuting this trailer in this despicable format, when they wisely placed Francis' APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX in the glory format that is Quicktime.. well I consider it a slap. But neverthless, we have have our first moving look at GANGS OF NEW YORK and I'm very very interested in the film still. Daniel Day Lewis' Butcher character looks fantastic, and Leonardo DiCaprio.. well he looks like Leo, but hey... that boy may be way too good looking, but he's a helluva an actor, and has proven it multiple times now!

CLICK HERE TO GET THAT TRAILER IN CRAPPY WINDOWS MEDIA FORMAT!!!

I can't get at the trailer thru this shitty connection, but I've intentionally kept away from reading too much about this film. Goodfellas in Stove Pipe hats!!!

I really couldn't see the trailer; it was too fuzzy and unfocused. It "sounded" good and I definately look forward to seeing the movie. I DO have a question...Does Leo have a green card? Does he need one? What is it with him and these immigrant roles? If he wasn't playing the part of an immigrant, my connection was even worse than I thought.____A Computer Challenged Bee

That is without a doubt the worst streaming video I have ever seen.

I'd like to say the movie looks great, but I can't make out a sodding thing thanks to Bill Gates Fuckovision.

    Mean Streets.

    by masonslotion

It looks great; gritty and dirty and mean and frustrated. I think Day-Lewis is gonna steal the show on this one.

I'm looking forward to this one, no doubt about it. Brill.

Scorsese is the finest film maker living today. Fuck all the talkbacks about Star Wars Ep II, Lord of the Rongs and The Matrix. I'm looking forward to all of them, but a new Scorsese - especially one that looks as good as this does - is a highlight of the year

Is Liam Neeson in this movie or not???

    by splinter

Ever since I started hearing about this film, his name was mentioned - what's the story? Is he in it or not? Anyone know? As regards the trailer, and as an Irishman.....WOULD YOU AMERICANS STOP TRYING TO DO IRISH ACCENTS!!!! YOU CAN'T!! The trailer was more fucking Far and Away than 19th Century Goodfellas - I am now officially nervous.

    I *Think* It Looks Decent.....

    by mrbeaks

Note to Miramax: when debuting the trailer for your biggest film of the year (and, I believe, the most expensive in your studio's history) online, choose the format that *doesn't* make it look like a pixilized piece of shit. I guess I'll have to go see APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX again to see this for real. IMAX theater..... GANGS OF NEW YORK trailer..... another opportunity to savor Walter Murch's sound editing..... beats slappin' down $10.00 for AMERICAN OUTLAWS.

    The Mean Age of Penzance

    by cady

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE meets PIRATES OF PENZANCE meets MEAN STREETS. As much as I'd love to see Scorsese finally win an Oscar, this doesn't look like the film that's going to give it to him. DiCaprio is a talented actor, but he looks horribly miscast here. He seems to be trying too hard to convey toughness. Cameron Diaz also looks terribly out of place. It could be Day Lewis's film to steal. The question is whether the film's even worth stealing.

    by jeichstedt

Saw it on ET (*gag*) last night. Not overly impressed with the trailer, but then I didn't care for the trailer to Bringing Out the Dead either, and that turned out to be one of my faves of '99. But what *did* look good was the trailer to Redford/Gandolfini's "The Last Castle". Only two months until that film!

    by mr. stevens78

    Harry,

It feels like this film has been in the making for three years and after all that time this is the best trailer they can give us. I mean it barely does a good job in sparking interest in the film. Oh well I'm sure we will see a hell of a lot more on this film in the months to come.

    Original Gangstahz

    by bswise

Don't judge a flick by it's trailer. "Gangs" is going to be great and I predict will return the crown to Scorcese and reestablish Leo as a credible actor--this status diminished in the fallout of his party-boy/world hearthrob post-Titanica era and Danny Boyle deadhead "Beach"-capades (man, talk about a movie literally "jumping the shark.") **** I've always wanted to see a film detail the Civil War Draft Riots--finally, some real New York/U.S. history. I'm so tired of all this revisionist, jingo "good war" crap like "Pearl Harbor" and "The Patriot" **** The real score is by Elmer Bernstein (Magnificent 7, Cape Fear, Age of Innocence, etc...)

I believe Liam Neeson plays DiCaprio's father, who is murdered at the beginning of the film by Day-Lewis' Bill the Butcher. As far as Irish accents go, that's on individual actors and their accent coaches...Hollywood's version of an Irish accent is a bit idealized and middle-of-the-road. Could you imagine someone trying to imitate a Cork accent? It's indecipherable enough as it stands.

    Gangs/Elmer Bernstein

    by lazarus long

All I have to say is that as much as I like the score for Glory, Bernstein has done better work than Horner will ever do. His music for The Age of Innocence was phenomenal, especially for the beautiful, haunting ending. He is going to put this film over the top. I was expecting Scorsese to maybe get Morricone for this one, but I'm glad with his choice. The more important fact that hasn't been mentioned is that Michael Ballhaus is doign the cinematography. Scorsese did some great recent work with Robert Richardson (Oliver Stone's DP), but I think it was smart to use Ballhaus on this one. The man may finally get his golden statue, after photographing some killer stuff. This is the guy who shot Age of Innocence, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Last Temptation of Christ. Also some good stuff with Redford on Quiz Show and Bagger Vance. *** As for the trailer, yeah, it looks a bit like Titanic crossed with Far and Away or something, but that's the studio's work. Scorsese didn't cut this ad himself. It shows off the epic scope, focuses on the 3 main characters, the revenge factor, the love story. The question is, are people going to see it. I forget what else is opening around Christmas, but I'm glad Leo's in it because he may wind up drawing a good portion of the audience. God knows the mainstream public has forgotten about D.D. Lewis and Last of the Mohicans. And about Leo's accent, we heard like two lines, how could you judge so quickly. My guess is that it will sound authentic enough to be legitimate, but not so much as to be unintelligible. Lewis has got a great early New Yawk thing going on, and in that one shot he had THE DeNiro expression. So he'll fill the shoes well. It's Oscar Time!

    Looks freakin' GREAT!!!

    by kubrick114

What's everybody on this board been smoking?! Next to "Ali," this is trailer of the year! I thought it teased the film beautifully. Day-Lewis looks like he could win another Oscar; DiCaprio looks like he's at his best since Gilbert Grape. And those sets and costumes! THE PHOTOGRAPHY!!! The way much of the image is desaturated, but some colors just burst off the screen with vibrancy! Miramax, GIVE US QUICKTIME!!! And not small-form, junk Quicktime; this trailer needs to be HUGE! "And when I close my hand, it becomes a fist." How can you NOT love this trailer?! WE'RE LOOKING AT BEST PICTURE HERE!!!

This format sucks so bad that I refuse to watch this trailer. The sound is always at least five seconds ahead of the video, even on T3. Bastards.

    Finally...

    by dropkickmurphy

I'm an Irish boy who's been a Scorsese fan for a while now, and everyone of his films, Casino, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, I was like, "damn, it must be really cool to be Italian." Now Marty when ahead and made something for the Micks! We actually have a couple cool Irish flicks, the closest we get to GOODFELLAS is STATE OF GRACE with Sean Penn, Gary Oldman and Ed Harris, of course it's out of print and a bitch to find! Anyway I hope this movie is as great as I hope...Marty you rock...By the way what's up AICN? I've been in and out lately hopefully all's well...by the way it's good to see Harry "fightin' the good fight" against Freddie P, but takle it easy on Lillard, he's only guilty by association.
