COLLATERAL DAMAGE trailer online. (If you care.)

Published at:  Aug 14, 2001 6:45:48 PM CDT

Greetings, recovering Arnold fans! HREF=mailto:robogeek@robogeek.com>ROBOGEEK here with the trailer to his latest film.

Maybe it's just me, but over the last five years it's been harder and harder to remain a true fan of Arnold, given the fact he's starred in JINGLE ALL THE WAY, BATMAN & ROBIN, END OF DAYS and THE 6TH DAY... as opposed to, say... I AM LEGEND, CRUSADE and WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. (Can you imagine? Can you imagine?)

This year he stars in COLLATERAL DAMAGE, which (to me, at least) just looks like a movie I've seen before - and don't particularly care to see again.

In a nutshell, Arnold plays a beefier-than-thou everyman (named Gordon) who loses his wife and child to a terrorist, and then sets out on a path to revenge... only to become involved in the lives of the wife and child of the very same terrorist he's after (in Colombia).

What astonishing serendipity!

But wait... if I want to see a movie about serendipity, why don't I just go see SERENDIPITY - which also happens to open October 5th?

Anyway, COLLATERAL DAMAGE is directed by Andrew Davis, who made one really good movie (THE FUGITIVE), and... well, some other movies. However, the supporting cast includes Elias Koteas, John Leguizamo and John Turturro - all of whom I think are interesting, but have also been in their share of crap.

Furthermore, the film comes from Warner Bros., which isn't exactly having a great year. (For the first time in eleven years, they didn't have a film make over $100 million this summer - yet Lorenzo still has his job.) Will Arnold turn things around for them in two short months?

Praying Arnold makes KING CONAN,

P.S.: Thanks as always to the awesome QuickTime Movie Trailer team at Apple for posting the trailer. (BTW, it's in "auto-detect" mode, so its size/resolution dependent on the connection speed listed in your QuickTime preferences; the better your connection, the better the trailer.)

CAN I IMAGINE? Yes, I can imagine...

    by sethshandor

And Arnold would be awful in I Am Legend (I always thought Kurt Russel would be better... and stick to the book dammit!) and he probably would have sucked the life out of Crusade and With Wings. Poor Arnie. Aside from Predator and being passable in the first Conan, I've only liked him in his cameron films. He has a presence... but, it's just not enough anymore. He should stick to sequels, Conan 3, True Lies 2, Predator 3, pre-sold ideas, until he gets his shit together and gets a new persona to run into the ground.

I saw Arnold eat a monkey once. He did it in one big bite. I was impressed, but then I puked. :(

    I hear....

    by yodabutter2000

... that WB is putting all their eggs in the Harry Potter basket. And I mean ALL their eggs. With the crap they've been involved in, perhaps it was the best thing for them to do?

    Holy crap, I'm first!

I gotta agree with Robogeek, Collateral Damage reeks of bland, generic, run-of-the-mill action nonsense. I think the problem with Arnold's career is that he's gotten so high up on the Hollywood food chain that he's painted himself into a cinematic corner. Think about it: the man costs $20-25 million a movie, plus at least 20% of the gross percentage points. Most productions can't afford someone like that, so Arnold is never considered for them, which severely limits his options. Meanwhile, the productions that can afford him can ONLY afford him, meaning they can't shell out any more cash for a name-brand director and a well-known supporting cast. Furthermore, the studios want to make sure they get their money back, so they bump up the action and dumb down the script in an attempt to reach as wide an audience as possible. So where does this leave Arnold? Left alone to carry an entire movie with a bland script, direction-by-numbers directing and a supporting cast that's been pushed too far into the background (the better to show off Arnold) to offer any support. ***** I'd feel sorry for Arnold, but it's his own greed that's holding him back. If he'd reduce his salary and demands, he'd be able to work with the kind of cast and crew he needs (i.e. everyone from True Lies) to really shine. I'm not saying he has to suddenly go indie like Stallone in Copland, but at the very least he has to start working with name-brand players (like Tom Cruise and Will Smith do) or things'll only get worse.

I would've finished watching the trailer but I drifted off about 5 seconds into it. I'm going back to beddy now. Would someone mind waking me when Arnold decides to quit wasting our time with this dreck and do something memorable? If that's even possible any more?

    OLD NEWS

    by srdrew

This trailer has been online for 3 or 4 weeks

and you might as well just post a direct link to the file, people like to be able to watch stuff when they want and how they want rather than in some tiny browser window.

    http://a1872.g.akamaitech.net/7/1872/25/d8c089c006bf3f/www.collateraldamage.net/dld/trailer_hi.mov

and it's not "link stealing" or anything either since it's the official site, their bandwidth exists to get hype for the movie, and they have no banners or anything so no one is being cheated out of popup hits or anything.

I gotta stick up for Arnold here....

    by dirty_bird

Since no one else seem to will, I think that Collateral Damage looks pretty decent, certainly better than 6th Day, which was better than End of Days, which was even better than when he hit rock bottom with Batman and Robin, so at least his movies are seeming to get progressivly better until we get to the main events, T3 and Conan 3 and possibly True Lies 2. Hopefully Conan 3 though!

    by uga

And it looked pretty good back when I saw the trailer online almost a month ago. Hell, just in comparison to everything he's done since - what, True Lies? - this looks good.

    Obscure Homage: that wasn't Harry

    by jeffv

I'm actually surprised the number of times that people think articles are written by Harry when they are clearly attributed to someone else (e.g. Moriarity, or in this case, Robogeek). Harry isn't the only one that posts articles in the big font.

    Good ol' Ahnald

    by the game master

In all defense of good ol Arnold, I think his movies have always been good (except B&R). It's just that he is typecast in the "action" genre, a genre that exists almost entirely on fast-food plots. Ask Segal and Van Damme. What Arnold needs to do is something original, or something beloved. Actually, he looked physically better/younger in 6th Day than in the last six YEARS! So there's hope. Unfortunately, Conan 3 will not be it--I've heard that role is going to The Rock, and won't even be titled Conan the King as we'd like, but something like "Conan: The Legend Continues" or something that makes it inconsistant with the previous two films. However, Terminator 3 has promise, as does True Lies 2. Personally, I'd like to see PREDATOR 3, but, ah well, Hollywood will go where the money is. Oh yes, the big A-Man was also originally supposed to be in Planet of the Apes. I think that may have been good for him. Actually, ya know, at the end of "End of Days", when Arnold tossed away his cannon in the chapel, I thought that was a PERFECT time to undo his typecast, to switch roles, and not pick up the guns again--think about it, a new millenium, the 80s are gone, he's evolved from a fighter into something grander--but then came 6th Day, the Total Recall redux. Now Collateral Damage. Come on, Arnie! My 2 cents.

  • And look at him, he can still out fire!!! YAY ARNIE!!! The most exciting thing about this movie is wondering how bad it will do, I say worse than even Final Fantasy.

    ABking here...

    by abking

This is ABking once again coming to the defence of ICON action GOD Arnold. My opinion is this, Arnold's last few movies haven't been the best of his career, but that's because he was trying to change his action image to everyman. An image I don't think needs to be changed. Arnold himself said EOD wasn't the film he wanted. EOD was good film with some bad moments and dialogue, but it still was a good oak film and not the dreck all of you make it out to be. This all points to a strong director. The oak has always been about strong directors (Cameron, Verhoeven, McTiernan, Rietman...)In all honesty, COLLATERAL DAMAGE looks damm GOOD! You Arnie bashers can at least admit that. Much better than T6D and EOD. Collateral Damage actually looks like a hard ass film even if Arnie doesn't pick up a gun or is playing a superhero character. Some of you pussies on this board even went as far as claiming that Arnold is all about PG-13 films nowadays, but what is Collateral Damage rated? HARD R, that's what!!! Arnold knew a film like this needed to be hard and he personally got that R rating. Now, when I see Collateral Damage on October 5th, I'm hoping this is the 80's and early 90's Arnold, but even if this film is ok, where does that leave Arnie??? Well, Arnie definetly will make T3 and TRUE LIES 2. With T3, he has a fair to pretty good director in Mostow and maybe a good actor bad guy in Vin Diesel if he is in the film. That along with a strong script will make T3 gross an easy 200 million domestic. Who in there right mind wouldn't want to see Arnold vs Vin. I would have killed to get Cameron back on board but that won't happen. But T3 can still ROCK with Mostow. Then we have TRUE LIES 2. This is going to be Jim Cameron's baby and bring him out of his shell to open a can of whupp ass and once again create new stunts and great effects and action scenes. This is a sequel like RUSH HOUR 2 that will easily top the originals gross and give Arnie true power in Hollywood again. I see TRUE LIES as a three part franchise. Even without those two garanteed films (T3 and TL2), he might still make KING CONAN: CROWN OF IRON, CRUSADE and WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. All films waiting to make the oak an even greater LEGEND. You people have turned on the oak and that is almost understandable given his promise of GREATER epic films, but when you watch movies like TOTAL RECALL, the TERMINATOR films, TRUE LIES, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, PREDATOR and so forth, you know in your heart that the oak can still KICK SERIOUS ASS and return back to his glory days.

Looks really good...Harry I cannot trust your opinions EVER!

    by whosyourdaddy

It looks like the Fugitive meets Commando - which is fine by me. And actually, the 6th Day was pretty decent aswell. If it would have had an R rating it wouldn't have been overshadowed by The Grinch so much (not that they have anything in common, just released at the same times).

    Arnold should learn Kung Fu

    by rubycon

Arnold-type action just aint fun anymore. We all want hand-to-hand combat and martial art. We don't want a big guy with guns. BUT...imagine this. What if Arnold became really good in martial arts? What if this massive super-large guy would train to become a kung fu expert. He would rock!! He could be the bad guy beating up Jet Li or something.

Looks like a return to something like form

    by eraser

Okay, okay, okay, its not the epic I Am Legend. Its not. I always think how things would've changed if WB hadn't wussied out and made I Am Legend. It was ready to go, with Ridley Scott directing. It would have been HUGE. We're talking GLADIATOR big, phenomenon. You'd all be loving Arnold right now. But, we got End Of Days. Now, I liked Enod of Days, a lot. I hadnt seen my favourite movie star on the screen in two years, I was overjoyed. Watching it now, It has faults, lots of 'em. The hack Hyams for one, but it in no way sucked like the 6th Day. It was embarrassing, and Spottisewoode is the most inept director ever to (dis)grace the silver screen. Now we have CD, another hack, Davis, but he is on the familiar territory that made him work well on Fugitive (and Under Seige - not bad), Arnie is looking better than in The 6th Day (the wardrobe on that movie made him look pathetic), and this'll do fairly well I reckon. In all, I'm looking forward to it, hopefully it'll get a good gross, and then we can move on to bigger and better things. Ump is on the cards, no, get a good black comedy director, ace (Arnie as HITMAN - cool!) TL2, yes, yes, yes. T3? Leave it, not worth the risk, he's in a completeley different shape to T1, and still cant regain his T2 shape. Leave it alone. And, with CRUSADE, Arnie has always send that he wants to bow out with that film. The last good Arnie film was eraser, TWO GUNS, COOL, CAR fliiping past him, COOL. It was fun. Let this film be, it'll be better than EOD, far, far superior to T6D. It'll be a good 3/5 film, but will get him back on track. You all loved Arnie once, some of us still do. CANT WAIT!!!!
