Hey folks, Harry here... a little bird at Paramount leaked me these shots from Cameron Crowe's VANILLA SKY... They aren't the pictures of Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz or Cameron Diaz, but hey... we all know what they look like from memory. Meanwhile what we do have are all the people that make those people look good... So check em out, and thanks goes out to P.M. for dropping me these pics from one of my most eagerly anticipated films of 2001!!!!

    as the crowe flies

    by jeff bailey

I just cannot wait to see what they do with this movie. Open Your Eyes was kind of a misfire. And frankly I thought Almost Famous was overrated and by far Crowe's worst movie topped off by that smug Kate Hudson performance (watch her drift into obscurity). But I think Crowe is a cool choice for a thriller. It's always best to get someone who doesn't do these kinds of movies to make one. They can bring a fresh take. And he is one helluva writer.

...just wanted to let you know you've been a real inspiration. I've studied your scripts in-depth, trying to learn from one of the best in my own screenwriting endeavours. All the best, and definitely looking forward to Vanilla Sky.

I'm surprised to see that Harry is highly anticipating a remake of what was an OK Spanish film by Alejandro Amen

    Gotta agree with James Bailey

    by skinny bastard

Good call. I liked Almost Famous, but the Academy made the right move by giving Marcia Gay Harden the Best Supporting Actress last year (but don't get me started on Gladiator, or the overall snubbing of Requiem for a Dream, especially in the editing category). And the more I think about it, Open Your Eyes is a good film to remake ... it was okay, but the script deserved better. I just wish Hollywood would stop remaking classics. Insomnia ... I wish Chris Nolan all the luck on that one, but it's just a bad choice all around.

Cool supporting cast except I will never get over Alicia Witt in DUNE. Ugh!!
Love the fat english guy from all those Mike Leigh films.

I expect a variation on Open Your Eyes because I did not think it was that great of a story.

How is Insomnia not a good choice for an American remake? It's a total Hollywood-noir film despite being Norweign. But, yeah enough of the remakes of classic Hollywood movies sheeshhh!!!

    Trailer Rocks

    by jack d. ripper

Saw the trailer a couple months ago at "Amores Perros", not in front of the film, but at one of those booth dealies where you wear the goggles. I don't know when the trailer'll be released in theaters, but I can honestly say that I can't wait for it. In fact, I think the only trailer that even RIVALS "Vanilla Sky" at this point is the trailer for "Ali"-which I totally dug. Anyway, if the trailer's any indication, this seems to be a completely new direction for Cameron Crowe. Very dark, brutal filmmaking, about as far as you can get from Say Anything and Almost Famous. I also don't think it's wrong to say that if the film's as good as the trailer makes it appear, this'll be an Oscar horse(or, perhaps more accurately, a film that we all THINK should be an Oscar horse, but is screwed over-Fight Club, Election, Magnolia, GoodFellas, etc). Apparently, from what I can tell Tom Cruise is some kind of rich businessman who's injured in a terrible accident and then gets a new face courtesey of Dr. Kurt Russel, and is in trouble with Cameron Diaz while his corporation turns on him, and Jason Lee does as well. It looks great!

    by bigtuna

I might be insane but i'm sure I saw an interview with russel when he was promoting that goad aweful 3000 miles from Graceland, where he said working with Cruise on Vanilla sky was the best film experience ever for him, oh well.

    Alicia Witt should make porno

    by immortal alice

I love that chick. She's been hot in everything she's ever made, well, except for Dune, but she was like 10.
Now, as far as Cameron Crowe is concerned, I think you guys who gush over his work have every right to do so, but I for one think he is pretty overrated. Jerry Maguire was okay, but nothing outstanding, Almost Famous almost put me to sleep, and Singles was just.......bad. I guess I'm more of a fanboy than a cineaste, but that's kind of what this site's all about, no?

PS: Attack of the Clones is a stupid, stupid, stupid name.

    A decent remake?

    by magga

I agree wholeheartedly, Skinny Bastard. I actually liked Gladiator, and was happy to see it beat out my most dissapointing cinema experience ever, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But now that Requiem For A Dream has finally arrived in Norway, I can't believe it didn't win a truckload of awards. Best supporting actress, best editing, best direction, best music, best cinematography, it should have ruled. And Insomnia was a so-so idea that was helped by great actors and wonderfull locations, so there aren't many reasons to remake that one. They made as much out of that premise as they can, I think. As for Vanilla Sky, I'm not familiar with the original, but if it was a badly executed dramatisation of a good idea, I'm all for this remake. I really liked Almost Famous and Jerry Mguire, so I guess Cameron Crowe is on a roll. Let's hope for a great movie. God knows we need one these days.

    These photos are amazing

    by sierramountain

The movie seems to be headed towards the offbeat and the surreal. If this film is a success both creatively and financially, we may another or Western version of Ang Lee in Cameron Crowe. Crowe has already made one classic masterpiece, Jerry Maguire and a memorable nostalgia piece with Almost Famous. This film is looking more like a Kubrick/Kieslowski/Polanski influenced film. Simply put, those images look absolutely amazing.

    by 33.3rpm

My two favorite actors in the world are Noah Taylor and Tilda Swinton and I didn't know they are BOTH in Crowe's movie. Fuck, that's some great casting!! I am really psyched to check this one out. I loved Almost Famous. I just thought it was a really honest and beautiful example of American cinema. How can people slam Crowe when Hollywood churns out complete shit most of the time. Go to a Freddie Prinze Jr. film festival - then tell me how much Crowe sucks. Show some brains...

    One opinion on Cameron Crowe

    by magnoliaman

He's 2 for 4, in my opinion. Jerry Maguire and Say Anything are sentimental, lightweight, inconsequential rubbish. Singles and Almost Famous are wonderful, intelligent, insightful, controlled films. In Jerry Maguire, I constantly feel embarrassed for Tom Cruise because he has so many idiotic moments: "We live in a cynical world..." "You complete me!" and that was only one scene. Let's hope this is a good Crowe film but the presence of Tom Cruise makes me suspicious. However, there are rumours that, like The Royal Tennenbaums, Vanilla Sky will bring the Beatles back to the big screen. This would definitely work in its favour. PS I loved Almost Famous but can we all agree that it had one godawful moment? I'm thinking of the scene where the stewardess approaches William Miller and says "You have a nice day." I couldn't believe the same guy who made the rest of the film was responsible for that Saturday Night Live-like broadness. Maybe a miracle will occurr and Crowe will remove it from the director's cut.

  • Alicia Witt is chez hot, but so was the original Saphie from Ab Fab. That american version with Maggie from Moonlighting stunk. But we all remember her from Twin Peaks. And Maxim.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Frankly, next to that redhead, Cruz and Diaz look kind of ordinary. And the rest of the people in these pictures look great in terms of depth and character, kind of like the faces in Jaws or Jackie Brown, faces with depth, history and experiences in their faces. They sure look interesting, lets just hope the movie matches up.

    by foreskin_jones

She's probably reading this Talkback and being very scared while doing it. She will now definitely hire a bodyguard. Anyhow Sam Raimi sucks for one reason and one reason only he got that witch Kirsten Dunst who has nothing but a nice pair of ta ta's going for her otherwise she looks like Skeletor with a wig and did not cast the real MJ in his "Spider-Man" movie, Alicia Witt.

    by jimmyconway

first of all, to MAGGA: are you nuts? you liked Gladiator but thought Crouching Tiger was a big disappointment. CTHD had everything a film could need and Gladiator was popcorn film with a the a script that need about 20 more rewrites. And to all of you who say Alicia Witt should be Mary Jane, sure she has natural redhair and is freakin hot but Kirsten Dunst is a better actress.

Saw Jerry Maguire yesterday for the first time...

    by fatal discharge

.....what a disappointment!!!! I had taped it off the tv years back and never watched it, but now I have some blank tape to use once I copy over it. It's anti-greed pro-trust believe-in-yourself messages were as subtle as a brick hitting you over the head. Cuba won an Oscar for what, exactly? There were so many flashes of Tom's patented mega-watt smile that I wanted to kick his teeth in. I used to loathe Tom's early films but have to admit he's getting better with more experience especially when he plays against type like in Interview With A Vampire or Eyes Wide Shut but this film...ugh. Considering Vanilla Sky is a remake of a Spanish film by the director of The Others I'll be optomistic that it will turn out well but if the previous Crowe/Cruise collaboration is a sign of things to come then....

    by sabrina

So much that I don't even care that he's a Scientologist. He is like every cuddly, grinning, sweet boy I knew in college. Yum. I actually endured the horrors that were "Mumford," "Kissing A Fool" and "Heartbreakers" just to see his gorgeous little punim and hear his lovely drawling SoCal accent. I actually wanted Holden to end up with Banky (they were by far the cuter couple in Chasing Amy). I'm only going to see "Jay and Silent Bob" and "Vanilla Sky" just to wallow in his charms again. And don't get me started on "Promises." Yeeargh.
