ADDED More on that DAWN OF THE DEAD remake thing

Published at:  Aug 08, 2001 3:30:01 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... no comment....

Hey harry. If you haven't heard this load of bullshit
yet here it is.

DAWN OF THE DEAD - In a contemporary retelling of the
classic film, a group of people seek refuge in a
shopping mall from a world-wide flesh-eating zombie
infestation. When it becomes clear that no help will
come they decide to make a break through zombie
country for the ocean and a zombie-free island where
they can start over.

Right off beacon comms in development site.

A classic is truly being murdered.

J.

Sigh, ok I was going to remain quiet... But the concept of a Zombie movie with CG gore is just retarded. CG gore sucks ass... It is just lame, fakey funky ugly stupid junk.... Besides BEACON has a deal with UNIVERSAL and Stacy "I don't like Horror films and kicked Rob Zombie out of my studio damning his real horror film to obscurity forever" Snider! What? Are they going to do Big Budget NC17? Not bloody likely. Hell, with CG blood and gore, this will suck ass like hell. Add more characters in the Mall? The point was One woman and three men... the point was that you couldn't rebuild... that the group couldn't survive that small and isolated. What the hell am I doing? Obviously anyone that got the original wouldn't be remaking it. Sigh...

Hey Harry. More news if you aint got it.

Fanboy Planet recently conducted an interview with
James Gunn, the man with the difficult task of penning
the Dawn remake. Follow the link to read the whole
thing. Below are a few choice quotes from Gunn:

"It's a different take from the original -- which is
one of my all time favorite films -- but using the
central concept of the few survivors of a flesh-eating
apocalypse trapped alone in a mall."

He goes on to add:

"I'm excited about bringing the gore to a new level
with CGI effects and having a larger budget to play
with than the original film did. The screenplay
focuses on the nitty-gritty of surviving in this
world, treating the subject matter as if it were
totally real -- i.e., this ain't no campfest. It
should be terrifying and funny and sick as hell."

Wondering if we'll see updated versions of our
favorite fearsome foursome, Peter, Flyboy, Roger, and
Fran? It sounds as if we'll be seeing more folks
holding up in the mall, this time around:

"I could see a different take on the same subject,
with more survivors and more of a focus on surviving
in a world where the rules have totally changed."

As for whether or not we'll be seeing a Scream-esque
teen-fest set in a mall filled with the walking dead:

"I also saw a chance to do something in the horror
genre that was very different from the teen romps of
the past few years. Tonally, it's a return to the
great, gritty horror films of the 'seventies, aligned
modern day special effects and a sizable budget."

Finally, when asked how he felt about doing a big
budget remake of George's film while George himself is
seeking funding for a fourth Dead film:

"I would love for this new Dawn of the Dead -- both
the development of the film and perhaps an actual film
down the road -- to help bring more attention to
Romero, his career, his films, and his future
projects. That would be awesome."

Again, check out the rest of the interview.

I have mixed feelings on this whole subject: my place
here is to update the site as often as possible and to
keep things running in an orderly fashion- not to
editorialize and spout my opinions.

But I see my soapbox, just a few inches from where I'm
sitting, typing this.

I want to drag it over here, hop onto it, and launch
into an empassioned tirade against an industry held in
thrall by mediocrity, an industry that shrinks from
originalty like a vampire from the sunlight, an
industry that will green-light a big budget remake of
a great filmaker's work, while that very filmaker must
struggle through the mire of Development Hell,
fighting tooth and nail to produce new, vital,
original work.

But I won't. So I digress...

The opinions almost expressed above are not
necessarily those of George A. Romero; they belong
solely to your humble...

If the project is only "in development", there's no guarantee that it'll actually go through. Look at the rest of the crap "in development" on that page... I wouldn't expect a hack-job DotD remake to be greenlit any faster than "Sonsabitches", "Stop the Cubs!", or "WINDSHIELD WIPER MAN". Ohyeah... FIRST!!!!! ;p ;p ;p

NOT! Give me more emoticon tongue, baby! All I can say is that, goddamn, they had to start in a mall. Of course, there must be somewhere to go, it is the 2001's. It's not like they could be trapped on the roof of a building and the zombies break through wiht NO hope of escape. Dman, that would be waaayyy too retro and been there done that.

Far be it from me to suggest that the hordes of Romero fans at AICN bombard Beacon Pictures with emails demanding to know why this masterpiece is being remade (and written by the writer of SCOOBY DOO, yet), but the address given on their homepage is mrose@beaconpictures.com. I certainly would never suggest clogging their mailbox with irate tirades and demands that they learn from the debacle that was PSYCHO 1998, and stop this foolishness posthaste. That address again: mrose@beaconpictures.com. And look at some of the other masterpieces they have in development. SONSABITCHES? WINDSHIELD WIPER MAN??? These are the assheads in charge of remaking one of the modern landmarks of horror cinema?? Once again, mrose@beaconpictures.com.

Crispy Beacon - A contemporary tale of a communications, production, development, finance company that ruins a classic horror movie and then goes bankrupt.
Did you get a load of the other movies in development over there? "An astronaut has to sabotage his favorite baseball team to save the world." "Two rival cops team up to stop a crime in San Fran." Yikes! Sounds like remaking Dawn of the Dead is t going to be the least of their sins.

I just hope that Romero sees a cut of some of the profits (if it makes any money) so he can make a REAL dead movie and finish his series. It looks like they're taking elements of Day and putting it into this bastardly remake.
By the way, Resident Evil probably could have been amazing, but now without Romero, it'll sadly probably be load of cow feces, like all video game adaptations.

Who would've thunk it. Guess you don't need bullets in the head anymore, all's ya gotta do is remake the bastards. My vote? Greenlight this project, make no money, and then let's talk about getting the cast of Scooby Doo, scriptwriting gods Lucas, Speilberg, and Cameron to write a Joel Schumacher directed remake of Peter Jackson's Braindead (aka Dead Alive). Result: A roomful of Jar-Jars wishing they could be REAL actors, being mowed down by marines with lawnmowers in a big, underwater, blue-screened, green-screened set as it floods. Then it freezes, and Batman does a nice, pretty ballet for us. Yay! It'll be bigger than Pearl Harbor.

Ahh, I needed a good laugh. My top five on the site were:

    1. "Children of Men: The year is 2021. It's been 25 yrs. since the last baby was born. Manking is slowly going mad (christening kitties, committing suicide)while a Fascist gov't. tries to maintain control & solve the global mystery. A band of revolutionaries may have within their midst the only pregnant woman in the world." I want chicken, I want liver...

    2. "Siegemaster: 5th century action piece on Rohan Markev, poet, scientist & kick-ass expert on siege warfare." Yessir, nothing more kickass and action-packed than sitting around outside a castle for months waiting for people to starve. Starring MacKauly Caulkin (however you spell his name).

    3. "Your are going to prison: prison comedy!" ummm, nuff' said, I guess.

    4. "Miss Fortune-a lowly but lovely paralegal saves the day when the stuffy partners of a lawfirm try to appropriate the winning ticket from the staff lottery pool". shown on a double feature with "The Littlest Intern".

    5. "Labor Day"-two friends disguised as ultra-wealthy playboys turn New York's elitist Hamptons community upside down." Damn those posh Hamptonites.

Look on the bright side. At least with this company remaking DotD, we don't have to worry about anyone taking it seriously.

How about the film just has 'Dead' in the title without it being called 'Dawn Of The Dead'. Kind of like an offshoot or tribute to Romero's dead mythos - 'Dawn Of The Dead' is one of the greatest movies of all time and just does not need a remake or reimagining in any shape or form. I may just have to go on my promise of killing anyone involved in this project. Killing them with my stinky penis.

    by dark howler

Remaking Dawn of the Dead is the worst idea in the long sad history of bad ideas. Beacon should help Romero finance the fourth Dead film instead of remaking Dawn. Also, will this be a sequel to the remake of Night of the Living Dead from 1990? Or is it just a stand-alone film? Not that it really matters. I was just wondering.

    A modest proposal

    by pilcrow

I agree that they should just give George the money and let him make a new film rather than rework a classic, but they're not dealing with George. Richard Rubenstein owns the rights to the first two films, which is why we got that godawful "Night of the Living Dead Anniversary Edition" and why we'll have to suffer through CG zombies. The only silver lining in this is if George is getting a cut and can earn enough from it to finance his own film. Now its unfair to bash a film before it's been finished, in the same way that it's bad to bash a current release that you haven't seen just because you don't like the trailer, or the hype, or an actor. But a remake of DAWN is something that we don't need. The original is, in many circles, one of the ten greatest horror films ever made (it's in my top five). What's the benefit of remaking this? If they want to make more money off it, clean it up and give it a new theatrical release, or release Argento's ZOMBI cut over here. The Pythons just proved that people will shell out good money to see a new transfer of a very cheaply shot film with HOLY GRAIL. So take the $10 mil you'd spend on remaking Dawn, put $3 mil into cleaning up the original and rereleasing it, then give the other $7 mil to Romero and get something new. That would be a worthwhile investment.

HOW THE FANS CAN KILL THIS PROJECT

    by sanjuro

The way I see it, the only way for us fans to kill this project is to generate a tremendous letter writing campaign. Harry provided us with Beacon's email address -- let's use it! My recommendation: Be smart, but also be abusive towards the end, so that these assholes know exactly how mad this makes us. Guys, this is the only way. If we all send one or two emails to Beacon, then at least we've done what we could short of homicide. They probably won't read them, but let's at least try. THREATEN TO BOYCOTT THEIR COMPANY! MONEY IS ALL THESE ASSHOLS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT! Here's the email I just sent them:

You've no doubt been inundated with emails just like this one today. Whether you listen to them (and even read them) is something totally out of my control, so all I can do is write what I feel.

PLEASE DO NOT REMAKE DAWN OF THE DEAD!

    Reasons:
    1) You are doing a disservice to cinema and film fans everywhere.
    2) You won't make any money. Who in today's "Scream" era wants to see a Zombie movie? Horror, unfortunately, has moved past its day of glory (1970s) and is now nothing more than a mere shell of a genre.
    3) I will make certain NEVER TO SEE ANOTHER BEACON RELEASE. I'm sorry about the threat. I feel I have no choice. You people seem to be so interested in making money, and if that's where I need to hit you in order for you to feel it, so be it. I will make sure of the following as well: TEN PEOPLE CLOSE TO ME WILL NEVER WATCH ANOTHER BEACON RELEASE. If that's not enough, there'smore. I am not alone -- you must realize this by now. None of us want to see this film made. It's a crime against cinema and a brilliant filmmaker. (But you can't be troubled to collaborate with Romero, can you, you greedy, inartistic sons and daughters of whores?) And so, I leave you with this, IF YOU REMAKE DAWN OF THE DEAD, LEGIONS OF CINEMA FANS EVERYWHERE WILL ORGANIZE AND BOYCOTT YOUR COMPANY. WITH THE HELP OF THE INTERNET, THIS LARGE SCALE BOYCOTT CAN AND WILL TAKE PLACE. Test our wrath, motherfuckers, and we'll burn down the foundation.

    E-Mail Protest

    by timothycarey

Let's waste no time demonstrating the wholesale imbecility of this proposal to the e-mail address provided above (although, reading some of their "original" work in production, perhaps demonstrating wholesale imbecility is few syllables beyond these individuals). Here's the e-mail I just sent to said link: "In re: your (proposed) remake of Dawn of the Dead -- You must, the lot of you, be utterly, completely fucked in the head. As if it weren't bad enough that you have such abject lack of imagination as to remake a _sequel_ (what, Richard Rubenstein doesn't have the rights to _Beneath the Planet of the Apes_?), but you do it as Dawn's creator struggles to make the fourth installment in this (mostly) remarkable series of horror films. Why not wait until he finishes that so you can remake Dead Mark IV at the same time? I'll bet you'll be able to recycle plenty of CGI gore scenes for both. Speaking of which, looks like I'm "rendering" something in my small intestine as the full horror of what you propose comes home like a bad case of Montezuma's revenge. Mark my words -- you'll not only fuck it up (clearly no kind of concern for you whatsoever), you're also certain to lose money in the "bargain", while becoming a laughingstock, albeit not necessarily in that order. I guess the dead _do_ walk the earth, and they have a California zip code. Best wishes for your continued success."

    by gilbert

Shouldn't there be some crazy movie loving billionaire out there who just gives shitloads of money to talented film makers in crisis? He could produce Dead 4 and Spike Lees Jackie Robinson, and then start financing anything of Robert Rodriguezes that the studios are afraid of. That guy would be cool, his name is probably "Greatest billionaire who ever lived". He could also hire the mafia to keep the next Batman movies from sucking by forcing Clint Eastwood to make "Dark Knight Returns".

    You people are so predictable

    by s-p-o-n-g-e.com

It is typical fanboy loser behaviour to denounce films that haven't even been made yet. This is the same attitude that the people who picket films like Last Temptation of Christ, or your precious Dogma have.
Grow up and move out of mom's basement, kids.
Let's wait til it comes out, and THEN tear it apart if it sucks.
As for remakes, have we forgotten Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead? It was pretty good as remakes go, and managed to get an R rating.
Personally, I would love to see a modernized version of Dawn. Yes, it is a classic, and nothing can take away from it. But maybe you haven't noticed that there aren't a lot of zombie movies popping up worth seeing. Like the man says, maybe this will grease the wheels for Romero to get out part 4.
As for letter writing campaigns, forget it. You think these geeks are going to put out EFFORT? Get real. And boycott? Never happen. See if YOU can keep track of all of their projects and boycott them. And then see how stupid you sound when people ask you if you've seen something and you reply "I'm boycotting their films because I didn't want them to remake Dawn of the Dead."

RESIDENT EVIL rip offs Need Not Apply

    by thorn ms

A feature film of a Resident Evil type story would be welcome, but Dawn of the Dead's premise is not worthy and is a waste of time. That film was great for a beer & pizza laden drive-in theatre experience (most of you not old enough to know what a drive-in is, heh), but does not need or warrant a remake. Been done to death. Shock, gore, scare, who cares. Give it a story like Resident Evil or let the zombies lie dead. Enough is enough, and graphics add nothing more to the genre. To quote Sex in the City, "When is a zombie movie one zombie movie too many?"

    by thunderball

The real irony is there just isn't a big enough audience for a big-budget walking dead movie, no matter who makes it. I love/worship "Dawn of the Dead" but I realize that those of us who like this stuff are in the movie-going audience minority. Most patrons are too intimidate by this subject matter. Any studio that would give anyone - even Romero - a big budget for this kind of flick is going to lose money. So, just let George make his 4th dead masterpiece on a modest budget and you'll make some change.

While others may rant and use coarse language in their letters concerning the topic of the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, I will be polite and lucid.

There is no reason to remake DAWN OF THE DEAD.

But there is a chance to help the filmmaker responsible for it produce and finish the DEAD movie cycle. And that is the better choice.

Why? Because its what your core, paying audience wants.

    Let me explain.

Why remake previously made movies? Because people recognize the "brand name" of a previously enjoyed movie, which then draws them back to the theaters, correct?

Well, most "mainstream" moviegoers are not familiar with the movie. DAWN OF THE DEAD is a 1970's horror movie that was released unrated to movie theaters(though a universally derided R-rated version was released in 1982), shown almost universally as a

I dont understand why the empty barreled gunn has to use a name to sell his zombie movie. Why cant he make "his own" zombie movie and let it sell itself. Does he need to use the great name of George A. Romero because he is so uncertain of himself (for which he sure as when theres no more room in hell should be). If Gunn wants to make a zombie movie, hey go for it douchebag but leave the name and glory of a great out of it. Dont ruin a classic with your garbage moviemaking.

First off Thanks for posting an E-mail address for us to protest this POS idea for a film. I just sent them this letter that I thought might interested some. Ok maybe not but what the hell.

The only CGI gore I wanna see...

    by sylvia simon

...is Jar Jar Binks being slowly dismembered. First instincts on this movie? It will suck. Because the MPAA will NEVER allow a worthwhile Dawn remake to hit theaters without an NC-17. Times have changed - it's no longer the 70's, or 80's (sigh). Nowadays directors have to overkill the FX in order to slide in the stuff they really want. And overkill is exactly what Dawn is about (thank god!) So a remake will never work. Hate to rain on anyone's parade.

    Dawn Petition

Go and please sign this. At least some of us will be heard.

If they would have just left the Dawn name off, i would have went and seen it. They are changing the whole damn story and it isnt even Dawn anymore. And NO ROMERO.. No romero, no going to see.

  • Oh yeah, and cut out those stupid SWAT team scenes and add a character named Bobby that walks around the mall parking lot warning the group of the dangers of pre-marital sex. That would rock hard. Let's start a petition!

    Shaddup.

You all shouldn't care this much. Threatening to kill and skewer a film company for remaking a classic makes seems pretty lame to me. Give it up guys, if they're gonna remake it, they'll remake it. Whether you and your internet friends ban their movies or not. You never know, it might actually be good. It might actually be better than Romero's. It might even win Best Picture. Then again it might suck. But no one knows that yet...so wait till the bloody movie comes out before you bust a nut on the computer.

    dawn of the dead remake

    by ink

dawn of the dead was a classic flick in every sense of the word "classc", but i always felt that their was more of a story in their that we never got to see. My hopes of a better, fuller Dawn of the Dead have been harpooned After viewing the trailer. CGI zombies? oh please give me a break! And what the hell did those coffee drinking, cross dressing, basket ball dunking morons think ? that the power was gonna stay on and that the zombies were not gonna come poring in thur open doors and carpark areas?.

Give the big R some money and let the artist scare us shitless again not some talenless hacks with sony CGI and no idea what their doing.
