A look at TRAINING DAY

Published at:  Jul 30, 2001 4:10:18 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... This review from HIRLLNPIMP isn't surprising, Agent Smith over at Warner Bros told me that this film was amazing... That it was tougher than anything we've seen out of Warners in nearly a decade or more... Is it possible that the director of THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS has suddenly made a great film? Well, if that's the case then YEA! Cause we've seen enough poodle poo this year eh? We have to wait till September 21st for this one... but I'm ready for it now...

Nooo, tell me I wasn't the only AintitCooler at last weeks test screening of Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke's new thriller Training Day. Usually I just sit back and read the reviews that roll in on your site, knowing that everyone can review a movie better then I can. Never the less I waited and waited but to no avail. I must have been the only AICooler there.

Well I can't let it sneak by without letting the world know that this movie blew me alway.. Right until the last 30 seconds that were filled with a typical "Hollywood, need to tie up all the loose end, America has no imagination ending." Grr, I should have listen to that guy that wrote a review on your site that said LEAVE AI when you first think it's over and I should have taken that advice on this one.

The movie has a kick ass crew on board, Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington and then from the musical school of I just don't wanna sing we have Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray.. Sounds worse that it really is. The only one that gave me a chuckle a few times was Dr.Dre. Both Macy and Dog play cracked out mo-fo's (far stretch there!).

The movie is about the ups and downs of Ethan Hawke first day on Denzel's narcotics enforcement team. Like the trailer shows, its not easy being a rookie. But its what the trailer doesn't show that made the movie the best thing I have seen this summer. For ONCE! those Hollywood folks didn't give away all the good stuff in the trailer.

The movie is chalked full of shit talking, ass kicking ultra violent intense scenes, by far one of Denzel's best performances. You are easily drawn into the gangsta lifestyle and the movie's well written dialogue and briskly edited pace keep you interested. Just when you thought you were off for a day-in-the life buddy-cop crap flick, think again. I just recently watched Scarface and would attribute the violence in that film as being a big influence to the tone and style of Training Day.

Amen for Hollywood for making something new and different and godbless Denzel for taking a chance. My only suggestion would be to loose the last 30 seconds of the film.

Cheers,

HIRLLNPIMP

    Ethan Hawke ? NOOOOOOOOO!

    by sethshandor

Wow. Super-talent Denzel paired with zero talent Ethan? The mind boggles. It must be my getting older because in my younger days there were actors I didn't care for, but could stand in a good movie or role, but Hawke? I can't stand him AT ALL! What is it? Why do I find myself wishing him and Natasha Lyonne, Julia stiles, and Freddie Prinze Jr would all die in a car crash? That's not nice, I know, but I can't help wishing it! I feel dirty...

I'm pumped. The trailer looks cool. Fuqua did a decent job with Bait (I don't care what any of you say)and I have been waiting for Denzel to get some grit and showcase his range. Have to wait and see...

Oh hells yeah! The trailer is bad-ass.

    by wesley snipes

I love that trailer. Really well-done. I'm glad the flick looks to live up to the promise of the trailer (they rarely do these days). And Antoine Fuqua showed a lot of improvement with "Bait" compared to TRK, so I hope this continues his upward trend.

    Antoine Fuqua

    by sierramountain

The idea of Antoine Fuqua even making a tolerable movie is as hilarious to me as a football to the groin. Ain't no mutha fuckin' way Training Day is a good movie. The trailer made it seem like an amazing movie, but upon finding out who was at the helm, all of my expectations plunged to hell. Now if by any chance the movie DOES turn out to be good or even great, then I'll know Antoine Fuqua has been aducted by aliens and has been given something he's never had in his entire career... common sense. One good thing I can say about Antoine Fuck-a is that his incompetence motivates ME as a future commercial/music video director.

Snopp And Macy Grey Play Cracked Out Mofo's(Not A Far Stretch) W

    by the founder

This reviewer is a complete $sshole.I'm sure the movie will be good, but he didn't have to insult Grey And Snoop the way he did. Hirllnpimp do you know them personally to make a lame as crack(no pun intended)like that? NO. I tell you, black people get no respect on this site. Everytime a black artist or young black actor is mentioned on this site they are instantly belittled by some of you numb nuts. If you don't like the choices that are made with the casting, then make your own all white movie or shut the f%ck up, and take your insults elsewhere.

    by jungle-face-jake

Thats from The Insider soundtrack by Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke. Track 8-Faith. It was also played during the Traffic teaser last year. Further cementing the obvious proof that Soderbergh was definitely influenced by Mann's The Insider. But thats a whole other Talkback, i guess. I hope Fuqua gets the sense to lift from that film, because thats good taste. I believe anyone, ANYONE, can pull out a great film. Looks like this one might be THAT great film for Fuqua. Fuuuck, it has Ethan Hawke being beat up CONSTANTLY by Denzel Washington. Which i can definitely dig.

    Hmmmmm

    by special_ed

Denzel (a fine actor) once again the veteran cop breaking in the new kid on the block Ethan Hawke. Hmmmm. Narcotic division instead of Homicide because homicide is too cerebral, photos and clues while Narcotic deals with gangs, chases and gun fights. Hmmm. Singers turned into wanna-be actors. Hmmmm. Antoine Fuqua done stealing from John Woo and now stealing from Scarface. Hmmmm. Gee I wonder how original this is going to play, because on paper it doesn't really sound like much. I guess we'll just wait and see.

Founder, your comment was misguided and misplaced.

    by huneybee

ChestRockwell (good grief, makes my eyes bleed to type a name like that! Especially while on my first cup of coffee.) had an excellent point about the use of the word racist/racism and while I believe I am becoming one of the desensitized posters on this site, I must comment on the tb you have chosen to grace with your remarks. When the Britney Spears movie was reviewed, did white females jump to her defense when 99.9% of the tb'ers expressed doubt in her acting ability or used the forum for the opportunity to purge themselves of their sexual fantasies? No. In the above tb, were tb'ers stating "Oh hell yeah!!!! Ethan Hawke f**king ROCKS!!!!!" or "I will see this because of Ethan Hawke. He always brings depth and sophistication to any role he opts to portray." or ANYTHING complimentary to a "token" white man in this movie? No. My initial response was, "Hmmm. Denzel Washington...this must be at least an okay movie."____A singer does not typically make the transaction to actor very well. Some do better than others, i.e. Mark Wahlberg-sp?-, Cher-an Oscar, I believe- and I know there have been several black rappers to make the transition well. I am unable to recall their exact names at this time (it is early here) and will not make an attempt as I have no desire to read a vitriolic laden post about my misspelling of their names being a sign of disrespect to an entire race. The point is, if you wished to "stir things up" on this particular tb, you should have chosen another angle of approach as this one in so obviously "a plant".____A Bee Caffeinated Woman

  • First off, Ethan isn't talented, or good looking so forget that part (neither are the others I mentioned IMHO). But name a bunch of other "Good looking ,talented ,rich celebrities" I have no problem with. Pitt, Wahlberg, Damon, Affleck, Cruise (ok cruise is lame most of the time), Clooney, Jackman, Julia Roberts, Zeta Jones, Diaz, etc. etc. Sometimes, I like the above stars work, sometimes I don't. As I mentioned before, It's not nice, but for some reason I can't stand Hawke or his work. There aren't any famous but talentless hacks you dislike? and that your not jealous of? I bet there's a few, and Hawkes one of mine. So don't peg me as a hate everything fanboy. Or all peg you as a holier than thou elitest, and I don't think you are. Hell, I'm a fanman at worst.

    just makes Fanboys go nuts.

    RE: ChestRockwell And Huneybee

    by the founder

Please spare me your thoughts, or I may actually choke on all this phoneyness being shoved in my mouth. Denzil Washington, Sam Jackson, Don Cheadle, Angela Basset, and Laurence Fishburne are among the very few black actors that actually get some respect on this site. After a while it gets sickneing reading negative posts or a crack here and there about young black talent. Sure I would prefer to see some talented young black actors out there, but it's not like Hollywood is calling them, and when they do grce the screen it's in the usual roles that I won't even mention. I know some singers/rappers can give lousy performences, but it's all we young black folk get to see, so we have to support them, and they are only being called, because they have sucessful recording careers for the most part. Even though BabyBoy was more of the usual stuff that Hollywood churns out dipicting young black people Tyrese and Omar Gooding both gave solid performences, and yet they were blasted for no apparent reason, which furthers my point. Dear God in heaven I'm not even going to mention how bad the slams were against Jada and Aaliyah on the Matrix subject. Please don't mention Britney Spears, this girl is praised like the second coming of Christ, and she is a horriable singer, and I'm not usually one to knock a singer, because I understand the value of people's diverse taste in music, but I'm sorry THIS WOMAN CAN NOT SING, and I read the posts on her new movie she has coming out, and she was barely ragged on, and certainly not as bad as Aaliyah and Halle Berry has been. Maybe I'm overreacting, but wait until Harry posts somthing about the movie Bones starring Snoop, or Aaliyah's character in the Matrix and watch the insults start flying.

did that header make you break out in a sweat? Froth at the mouth? Look for white people setting up crosses in your yard? With gasoline in the shrubbery? Founder, all I can do is speak for what I have seen here. That is what I did on my previous tb and what I will do on this one. If you were NOT a "plant" attempting to get the ugly ball of racism rolling (once again) then I DO emphatically apologize. That type of behavior is all too prevalent here on aicn and I guess I sometimes see instigators where none lurk. I do not understand why you think anything I said was phony. Did I EVER say that Britney Spears could sing? No, I did not. Did I ever say that because a singer was black, they could not act? No, I did not. ____What I was (and still am) saying is that just because someone can sing, it does not mean they can act, and vice versa (Huey Lewis

Your last tb was much better. I agreed with almost everything you had to say. And yes, I hate Brittany Spears and think she's WAY overrated. Her voice is so nasely, what's up with that? Anyway, as I said before, there is still much racism in this country, but your statement that the reviewer's comments were racist were wrong. Disclaimer: I don't know the reviewer, so they may very well be racist, but their review wasn't. Thank yooouuu.
