FROM HELL poster

Published at:  Jul 30, 2001 11:52:16 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Seems that the FROM HELL poster is beginning to pop up online. I was sent the following poster from the BarnacleMuncher, hey... I don't name all of em, and frankly I really like this graphic. I think that it has a very scary and frightening look. Very true to its comic sources. AND we should be getting the first word on the finished film when it screens at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August/first of September. And when is this damn trailer gonna pop up online? Hopefully this week in magnificient Quicktime at Apple! "A dream is a wish your heart makes!"

They played the trailer before Planet of the Apes here, and it looked pretty cool. Nicely suspenseful, with no blatant plot give-aways.

The very idea of how this groundbreaking graphic novel is, in all likelihood, going to be dumbed-down and turned into some kind of Victorian-era "Seven" for the idiot masses is the most profoundly depressing thing I can currently contemplate. If one shred of Alan Moore's story survives, I'll be truly astonished. (And if the running time is anything less than 180 minutes, it's "adios Alan.")

    Alan -- Where are You?

    by knightronin

The preview trailer before Apes was cool, but seemed to bear little resemblance to the graphic novel.
Fine. Taking liberties is what film does. However, Alan Moore's name DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE CREDITS LIST OF THE TRAILER. The credit reads: "Based on the Graphic Novel From Kitchen Sink Press."
No. Kitchen Sink isn't even in business anymore and credit should be given where it is due; Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. Absolutely.
If their names do not appear in the final film or on the final poster - VOICES SHOULD BE RAISED IN PROTEST.

    by talkbackerssuck

against the ignorance of losers like St. Buggering and KnightRonin. No one's fucking name is on the poster other than the two leads! You already know that the movie will suck though. Must be great to be psychic. Oh, and I'm sure everyone involved with the film is truly saddened that YOU are pissed about it because 30 year old losers that live in their mother's basements is the prime demographic for the film. And St.Buggering something tells me that even if the movie wasn't about prostitutes, you'd still be referring to the women in the movie as "whores" since you have an obvious hatred of women. You guys haven't seen the movie yet! How can you know if it's bad or not? Alan Moore's name isn't on the poster? The "whores" are pretty? How the fuck can that determine the quality of a movie?! Unlike you guys, I will wait until I see the movie to determine if I like it or not. What a novel idea!

    Whiny purists make me laugh.

    by cuchulain

Even Campbell himself recognizes the film will be its own, separate work. If the idea of taking a different approach than the source material sickens you, don't go see it. Stay atop your hilltop of good taste while us dumbed-down masses enjoy what looks to be a terrific, stylish thriller.

    "...its own, separate work..."

    by sfreviews.net

Hey, if that's what the filmmakers were after, then fine...why didn't they just make their own, original JTR movie rather than an "adaptation" of an existing story that will not be an adaptation at all but "its own, separate work"? I fail to see the point of literary adaptations that don't even bother to retain some degree of faithfulness to the source material. Seems they could have saved the money spent on purchasing the rights to the graphic novel (which, despite its acclaim in the comics industry, was not exactly a mainstream bestseller and therefore doesn't have the "pre-sold" name recognition of something like, oh, say, Lord of the Rings) and just done their own JTR story from the ground up. And then whiny elitists like me could enjoy it on its own terms without having to compare it to something better all the time.

    Yeah, cool poster

    by jack d. ripper

However, it does look like this movie's going to be bad. It's really a shame that one of the most distrubing literary works of the '90s-and one of the best uses of omniscent narrative in recent memory-will be turned into a "stylish thriller", because it really is so much more than that. The graphic novel, while disturbing as fuck all, was really more of a portrait of madness than a "thriller", but it'd probably be impossible to translate it to film without making a thirteen-hour or so mini-series. Anyway, it's a real shame. Oh well, could be worse, at least Abberline doesn't say "I'm getting too old for this shit" or "This time it's personal" or something like that.

what's the deal with the the unending ass kissing of all things Apple...especially Quicktime. It's a good viewer but jeez, that's all it is. Do the Apple people have photos of you guys blowing a pony or something. On a diiferent note, good job on the randomized placement of talkback posts. Now all those "First" assholes look even stupider. Kudos.

    Distancing

    by glynyfaron

Potentially the reason Moore and Campbells' names don't appear anywhere is because they demanded to have them removed. But honestly, could you think of anyone less suitable then the Hughes brothers to direct this film?

Trailer was on tv last week

    by simian

Access Hollywood, Ent Tonight, Extra, E! or some such vapid entertainment show had the trailer on last week. It looks really cheesy, but in a good way. What I saw will no doubt have Alan Moore and the Ripper rolling in their graves, because it looks like the Hughes Bros took the exploitative route instead of the sober, academic one. It remionded me of an Itialian Gaillo picture with lots of little shocks and tons of colorful, but dark cinematography. It looked like Suspiria was a big inspiration, and everyone was really pretty walking along the grimy streets. I'll give it a chance; I'll just have to forget the comic.
