Father Geek back once more. This time with a mini-review from the MIFF film fest in Australia...
The best film of the day was the new one from Tony Gatlif who made "Latcho
Drom" called "Vengo". It was packed full of singing and dancing within an
absorbing story of feuding families. Apart from the spectacular singers,
musicians and flamenco dancers, the acting is also great, with a
particularly good performance from Orestes Villasan Rodriguez who suffers
from cerebral palsy. Definitely have to get the soundtrack of this one.
Well, CineLocos, tengo no cuates, o criticas mas, sooooooooo here's Coffin Joe Jr. and his section of this week's column...
Hey there you freaks, Coffin Joe Jr. is here for another scary edition of Latin-AICN. Read on or I´ll turn your tongue into a snake! Just kidding, relax I´m not gonna do it. I could. You know, if I wanted to, I could. Really, I could. Yes, I do have the power to do it, but I´m not really in the mood to perform such vicious spells. Still beware of Coffin Joe´s wrath! I´m sorry didn´t mean to scare you, please read the news. Once again, excuse my erratic behavior. I´m sorry. Just read on.
ARGENTINA
-The movie "La Fuga", directed by Eduardo Mignogna and which debuted in Argentina on May 24th, has a special behind-the-scenes program devoted to all aspects of its production, currently airing on the Latin version of the E! Entertainment Television channel. During the half hour show, we see interviews with cast members such as Ricardo DarÃn ("Nueve Reinas") talking about their characters, a bunch of prisoners who are plotting an escape from an Argentine jail in 1928, and the crew elaborates on the difficulties of pulling off a period film.
USA

-Our spy NAN has another scoop on "Once Upon a Time in Mexico":
"Here's some pictures from the set they appeared in this weeks TV y Novelas magazine."
"NAN"

BRAZIL
-Variety ran an article about the latest movie attached to director Walter Salles ("Central Station"), a remake of Akira Kurosawa´s 1963 thriller "High and Low". Martin Scorsese is one of the producers, and the project is currently at Touchstone/Disney.
The original film was about a wealthy business man who suspects his son has been kidnapped, but later discovers that it´s his driver´s son who has been taken. The man must decide wether or not he risks his life and his business, in order to save the kid.
CANADA
-Lots of cool stuff at Fantasia, the film fest that´s happening up in Montreal. Among the movies being screened you got Coffin Joe´s "This Night I´ll Possess your Corpse" and his drug opus "Awakening of the Beast" in its full uncut glory, a pretty cool slasher pic from Chile called "Angel Negro", and the documentary on Mojica ("Coffin Joe: The Strange World of José Mojica Marins") that won an award at Sundance earlier this year.
Besides these Latin offerings, you got the usual coolness from Asia and some new flicks from cult directors such as Scott Reynolds ("The Ugly", "Heaven"), Andrew Parkinson ("I, Zombie"), Larry Fessenden ("Habit") and Maurice Devereaux ("Lady of the Lake").
If I was there I wouldn´t miss Johnnie To´s latest, called "Wu Yen". Have you guys seen To´s previous efforts? "The Mission" or "Running out of Time"? The guy is good.
