The Greatest Version of the ALI Trailer thus far, hits thanks to the French!!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2001 1:00:57 AM CDT

Well like with most things cinematic this year, the FRENCH got it right. Them dad-blasted ETers done fucked up, and the French come in to the rescue, till the inevitable super high quality QUICKTIME hits the web.

CLICK HERE TO GET THIS BABY!!!

As I (Harry) watch this trailer mesmerized, I have to wonder when I see Jon Peters' name... After reading the script, did he ask who Cassius Clay was? Did he want Polar Bears to guard the ring? Did he want Will Smith to play Ali so long as he didn't float like a butterfly or sting like a bee? Why give Peters a hard time? Well he's been in charge of screwing up SUPERMAN for many a moon... He worked on that project not knowing Clark Kent's birth name. Hell... there ain't no difference between the two. Ali even guest starred in Superman in a special oversized fight edition where Ali whupped his ass like the out of shape Kryptonian that he was.

However, I have to say Michael Mann is shooting a damn fine looking film. And Will Smith... You sir have made a magnificient transformation. One that I once thought he could never pull off, but damn if it doesn't look like he's the GREATEST and is doing the greatest job of trying to pull it off. My anticipation has just leapt for this movie as I'm very happy to see that the teaser was a full on trailer and wasn't just ducking and dodging and swinging in a ring. But that it showed the personality and touched a bit upon the scope of the film. I can't wait!

    One of his best

    by all-ighty ollar

This movie, I think, will be one of Will Smith's greatest movies. He's very good for this part and when I saw who was playing Malcom X, I thought that that actor was also a good pick. This'll be a great movie.

    I think I'm second, but i don't give a flying fuck.

Feel free to delete my other post. I like the images from the trailer but didn't think the music quite fit for some reason. As for Will, I think he got Ali's cadence of speech down right, but not the voice. It's only when he says "I'm 22, I ain't got no scars..." that I think he hit it. Hopefully in theaters we'll be able to overlook this after five minutes and recognize him at "The Greatest of all Time. Either way, they got my $10.

Oscar for Will. Can we just give it to him now?

    by mcvamp

I dont even have to see it. Will Smith will get nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and unless some old guy who's never won before is up against him, he'll win. Period. It doesn't matter if it's a great performance or not, as long as it isn't a BAD one, he'll at least get nominated. Write it down. And at this point, "A.I." is still #1 in the Best Picture running, simply because of the talking about it and the fact that Spielberg and Stanley "Dead Genius who never got a Best Picture Oscar" Kubrick have their names stamped on it. Not that it wasn't a really good movie, I'm just saying.

"ALI" will not fail at the BO.

    by protector

Neither would "The Insider" if it opened today. "The Insider" failed at the BO because the producers didn't promote it well enough and because there was nothing that could catch viewer's attention. Russel Crowe wasn't famous that much before making "Gladiator" and people got tired of looking at Al Pacino's face. And who cares about some nicotine company that went down. "ALI" is different. It's Muhamadd Ali for Christ's sake. Will Smith was always able to turn a high-budget movie into a profit. I'm Will Smith's greatest fan (The Greatest fan) and even though I'm not ven an American (I'm Polish actually) I know he can pull this off and get an oscar nomination.

oh boy, here comes the Michael Mann bandwagon I started over a y

    by sierramountain

I can forsee a bunch of former-Ali-Mann bashers scurrying to finally hop on the Michael Mann bandwagon typing down "I always loved him" faster than they dip their chips in nachos. Over a year ago my ass was getting bullwhipped whenever I mentioned how under-appreciated The Insider was and now, after seeing the trailer, fools underwent a radical change in their view towards Ali. It seems like just yesterday 99 percent of the talkbacks regarding Ali was negative. This is exactly the kind of thing that irritates me about king gimps. Father death, dude how could you say you had doubts of Mann taking the helm of Ali when a project like Ali is something that totally fucking MATCH Mann's storytelling sensibilities? I'm mad dogging on you simply because if you were truly sincere, you wouldn't say something that ridiculous. Watch his movies and you'll realize how much of a blessing it was that Mann was the one who directed this film. But one thing that upsets me about Ali is that Michael Mann didn't use his longtime DP Dante Spinotti. I've seen most of the films Emmanuel Lubezki has photographed, but none of them struck me. Meet Joe Black was the only exception. Nonetheless, I'm relieved Mann recruited Eric Roth as his co-writer because he is Mann's Paul Shrader and REALLY fucking glad Lisa Gerard and Pietre Bourke are composing the score again.

    shooting location question

    by docbosch

Does anybody know why ALI was filming down here in Fort Lauderdale? Earlier this year somebody told me that the crew from ALI was shooting something near their workplace. It's not downtown Ft. Laud, it was closer to the beach, but not on the the beach. I've been around that area, and there are a few condos, some houses and parking lots. Why was Ali shooting down here? Did Mr. Clay or somebody he knew live down here or some shnick?

    NAYSAYERS TURNED BELIEVERS

    by nekko

Some see films or read scripts and say, "I could do a better job than that." And to this I say, "You could be right ... but you never will." When everyone at AICN was dissing Ali in the early stages, I got on talkback to remind you all who we were dealing with here: MICHAEL FUCKING MANN! Where's your faith in this master? All your bile. I knew it would be great just because Mann can direct the goddamn phone book and rip our heads off. It's no good of you all to start suddenly supporting him now, after all the work's been finished. You have no vision. You can only see the end result. And so you will never truly know what it takes to make a film, or produce it from nothing, from an idea. And as I said in the beginning, "You never will."

    Mann and other Musings

    by selectd

Okay, so I agree that Michael Mann is brilliant, I've thought so ever since I saw Manhunter years ago. Anthony Hopkins can stick his "remake" of Red Dragon up his ass, I can't believe they're doing that...okay, bit sidetracked. My point here is this. Don't start giving all the credit to Michael Mann. Will Smith has worked his ass off to do this movie. He turned it down like six times and then Ali himself asked Will Smith to do it. If anyone is interested in reading some good info. on this movie, go check out upcomingmovies.com. I hate to plug another site, but they have links to interviews with Will Smith, his trainer, etc. It's pretty eye opening as far as what went into this film. And by the way, for those of you who think Will Smith is an action star good for nothing but one liners...check out Six Degrees of Separation sometime, you might see a different game.

    Wow

    by scudd

Im surprised the Will Smith bashing hasnt begun in full force yet. Everyone seems pretty open minded about this flick, as we should be. Smith has only really done throwaway movies in the past, stuff that he knows without a doubt will do well in the box office, but he deserves a chance to prove himself as an actor. He hasnt been bad in anything, he has just been...well...himself. Which in itself isnt a bad thing. Look at John Wayne. He was John Wayne in every film he was in. He was great in westerns, but look what happened when he tried to play a different role. Ghengis Khan, anyone? Anyway, cant wait to see this flick.

    The Ali/Superman Joke

    by recognizer

It had to be posted. Sorry, Harry, you compared Ali and Superman, and so this joke had to be repeated.
    (from http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/89q4/super.921.html):

"Once when Muhammed Ali was flying, the stewardess came over and asked
him to fasten his seatbelt. Ali told the stewardess, "Superman don't
    need no seatbelt".

The stewardess replied, "Champ, Superman don't need no plane".

    by mcgooo

I think anyone honestly evaluating this and looking at Ali, the real people depicted, or the look of the film vs. news clips can not dismiss this as being anything other than a powerhouse of a movie. Will Smith will be nominated, bet on it. I admit I was REAL skeptical. This knocked me out, with no standing 8 count.

    by croucht12

Give this man some recogniton already. "Last of the Mohicans, Insider, Heat, Manhunter" just to name a few, damn the man should get the Oscar this year. This would do the trick. Bastards passed on Denzel they won't make the same error twice. Will Smith (although I not a fan of his acting)has a great chance. Just hope this doesn't inspire his ass to take more serious roles.

    Will Smith's acting ability...

    by typhoon

Umm, did no one see Six Degrees Of Separation? Not exactly ID4, there, and even in Smith's more commercial roles (esp. Bad Boys and Fresh Prince), I felt like he managed to bring a real sense of humanity, compassion and even vulnerability to his roles when it was called for. Hell, there was an ep or two of Fresh Prince that brought tears to my eyes (the one where his father came back then split, and the one where he got shot). The man's got talent...he's just also got a sense of humor about himself.

This is going to make SERIOUS MONEY...

    by sal120

..and the reason for that will may be will smith, or michael mann, but the STORY. Ali's story has got all the elements, rise of the underdog, downfall due to politics, clashes with the establishment, regaining the crown after 3 years in the wilderness, losing to a younger guy, regainign the crown for the THIRD time...not to mention all the fights with people like Joe Fraizer and Ken Norton (fighting with a broken jaw). And lets not forget all the other incidents in Ali's life, like refusing to go to vietnam, joining the nation of Islam, his press conferences....and so much more.
My only concern is that the movie will not be be long enough to cover all of ali's greatest moments!! There is so much tension, excitement and drama in the story, that you wont care how well Will Smith portrays Ali. One Oscar this pic will defnitely be nominated for is best screenplay.

I am also proud that anyone who has something negative to say is only angry because he is showing US in a positive light. sierra, you really are a fuckwit man

    by kojiro

Mann has been filming movies longer than you have been alive. The fact that you you could look at his career on IMDB and infer that Ali would be quality does not, in fact, make you a prophet. That you then went on tb's and professed your faith in Mann's ability does not mean you are morally or mentally superior to those who raised doubts which they believed to be relevent. That you have demonstrated your ability to recognize the difference between shit and roses when they are shoved in your face (often, loudly, and obnoxiously) will not aid you in gaining the respect of the colklkective tb community. You have not affected this movie in any way, you are not to owe for Mann's present popularity and personally can gain nothing from his ability. You have not ventured into the tb's often of late, I can only hope that this continues because you continue to be the most annoying of tb's. May your eyes be plucked out with tweezers, and your teeth be sawed off with the new improved Drennel Multi-Tool.
