TIME MACHINE pictures from Comic Con!!!

Published at:  Jul 19, 2001 10:09:31 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with news coming out about THE TIME MACHINE from San Diego. Our salty seaman friend is supposed to sit down and chew the surf with Stan Winston at somepoint, but right now we got a picture of the Time Machine itself from the floor of the San Diego Comic Con... Here's Mim with the story and the pic by way of my old buddy Chuck Rozanski... I still remember him dropping by my house when I was just 5 and 6 years old, now he's Mr Comics! If you see Chuck, tell him "HI" from Harry Knowles!!!

Hey, Harry!

Don't know if you can use this or not, but I thought you might like to see it.
I am on an e-mail newsletter list from Mile High Comics, written by Chuck
Rozanski, the President of Mile High Comics, Inc. (It's a great, informative
and very personal newsletter written by someone who seems to be a really nice
guy.)

Anyways, he included this photo in the latest newsletter he sent from the San
Diego Comic-Con. It is a photo of the time machine prop itself from the
up-coming "The Time Machine" starring Guy Pearce. Pretty farkin' cool, eh???

Call me "Mim".

Meanwhile this next pic comes from CHUD where they have additionaly pictures of the Morlocks. I still prefer the classic George Pal versions of the characters... green... glowy eyes... white hair... overweight... Somehow I aspired to be a Morlock at the age of 75 feasting upon human bones... sounded like a lifestyle... I like cold dark places... as well as warm wet ones, but hey, no need to put y'all through all that....

>Click here to see the other fantastic CHUD pics from THE TIME MACHINE!!!!

What was that movie with Malcolm McDowell as Wells again? I really liked that time machine..looked a bit more 'victorian' then this..but the Morlock was cool.
    Eh.
    Hope this movie doesn't suck.

Wow... that *does* look pretty snazzy. But since we're talking

    by llghtst0rmer

Um... not to be too blunt, but... could y'all muhfuggas learn to DRIVE, PLEASE?!?! It's the first day of the convention and all downtown is already full of people who should really be WALKING the streets, not clogging them up in their cars, either rented or driven from wherever they're from. Folks, I really do hope you enjoy your stay here in SD, but could you all please, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE park the cars and walk a little? The weather's great this week! Take a walk! If you're at the convention, you're by the water... enjoy it! If walking's not your thing, there are places not too far from the Convention Center that rent bikes. There's also they guys and women who taxi people around in bicycle-driven taxis. I think their number is, like, 1-800-BIKEMAN. (Don't necessarily use regular taxi cabs though, please... they have no idea how to drive, either!) Go shopping at Horton Plaza, hang out at the beach, do whatever, but PLEASE do as much of it as possible on foot and, as Greyhound says, leave the driving to US! I really don't mean to bitch at people, I'm just pleading, I'm begging you to stay off the streets as much as you can! (Spoken on behalf of all local residents, workers, and specifically MESSENGERS in Downtown San Diego.)

Park in San Diego at your own risk

    by cds

I made the mistake of attending a film festival in San Diego a couple of years ago, and parked at the mall, where the festival said to park. Three movies later, I left, and it cost me THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS! So, whatever you do, don't park and walk in San Diego, keep driving. If you do park at the mall, throw your ticket away. The lost ticket charge is far less than the extortion they charge you to park in their scum-sucking mall.

    Time Machine

    by tbrosz

Looks very cool. I admit to a fondness and a preference for the George Pal Victorian look, but this one is really original. It does look "singularly askew," and has the characteristic described in the book of parts of it looking somewhat unreal, and not clear to the eye. I wonder if large parts of it move and spin when operating.

...eh. Who cares? Old joke anyway. I just wanted to be the first one to bring the punchline. Of course, by the way the TB order gets more convoluted than a David Lynch film, I'm sure my little punchline gag will most likely be placed before the setup post anyway.

    by otis von zipper

was that scene at the end when he watches the dead Morlock disintegrate. Cool stuff, it would be nice if that moment is in the new version. P.S. Why would anyone need to drive or park around downtown San Diego? The light rail line is very convenient.

    by lord of the geps

This is what was needed in JP3, as someone pointed out in the talkback there - cavemen! Imagine how cool that would have been, none of this modern man versus dinosaur nonsense, but primal man fighting his only real prehistoric predator - the terrible lizards themselves! Yes! I'm very excited about this!

I'm going to go to this so-called 'comic convention', and steal that bad-boy. I will then return to the jurassic period and prove once and for all that cavemen lived with the dinosaurs. I've sen those Harryhausen Documentaries. Just because they are black and white, doesn't make them untrue.

    TimeMachine Aussie Connection Trivia!

    by slaps_forehead

The original TimeMachine film starred Australian Actor Robert Taylor (doing a pseudo American Accent of course!)as the Scientist. Now we have another Aussie namely Guy Pearce playing the same role in the new version.
I watched the original film not long ago and while it looks crappy by todays standards I still think it was one of the better Sci-fi films of/at that time.

    by blakkandekka

Looks like the machine design was based on a Victorian lighthouse Fresnal lens (you can see a few examples at http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/lens/lensinv.htm), so chances are the rest of the design is the sort of button velvet, brass and leather seen in the Rod Taylor original.

How much is the world of this movie influenced by books like 'The Difference Engine' d'ya reckon?

    by mil mascaras

I agree with Harry that the old Morlocks looked cool. They scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and saw the movie on tv.
Don't get me wrong though...these new ones look great. Hey Harry, is it me? Or do they look like something out of a Richard Corben Comic? You know how he always crosses demons and apes to make his villians? That close-up on CHUD.com looks like one of the creatures from his fanzine comic "Monsters Rule." Eh...I only expect Harry and Father Geek to remember anything about them old comics. I hope this movie's good. Hey...who plays Weena??

I recently saw the teaser-trailer for The Time Machine and this doesn't look like what I saw. It was a brief look as the Time Machine passed overhead and away from the camera, but it looked a lot more like the George Pal version than this one does. Just wondering.

    by mississippibill

Looks like "Attack of the Chandiliers" or "Revenge of the Jalousie Windows." Geo Pal's machine was much better as was the one from "Time after Time" and the one from the Classic Comics cover. Like someone said this is a bunch of cutup freshnel lenses. It looks like this would flap itself apart like some of those "drunken bird" early attempts at helicopters. Too large and flimsy for the Morlocks to drag into the sphinx. Morlocks look closer to Wells book than those from Pal's movie. I think this version of the story has been "improved" until it's totally FUBAR. I'm still waiting for a Victorian "War of the Worlds" with walking Tripods.

the machine looked like a pregnant guppy.
(favorite line: "Back then I was a freak, here, I'm just an amatuer")
I'm was not impressed by the machine.
This one looks like a Christmas Tree ornament (nice Jewish boy like Speilberg keeps doing that, remember the ship from "E.T..."and the mother ship from C.E.3rd K?)
Why didn't they just offer the current owner big bucks and a screen credit to use the original.

    Neil

    P.S.
Harry, how's the transcription going on the Lisberger interview?
