STAR WARS EPISODE 2 Will Not Be Released Globally On The Same Day!
Hey folks, Harry here... Seems like Uncle George and his sideman McCallum have decided to not go with a global release date like LORD OF THE RINGS, because apparently "It's way too difficult..." Well, given the current state of the online blackmarket, it'll probably be released globally anyway, of course watching EPISODE 2 on your computer for the first time would be like having sex with a hot apple pie... really pointless. But more and more are doing it. Reports of FINAL FANTASY and JURASSIC PARK 3 hitting the web in near DVD and DIVX quality days before either film had even opened... well, unless the industry figures out a better method of partrolling, it won't matter if a studio releases globally or not... it'll be released that way by the pirates. George's waiting for the 'digital theater' revolution may end up costing him in the short run... We'll see. I just wish, for all my foreign friends that the film was released same day across the world... alas....
Hi!
here MRHA from the french website http://www.Starwars-Universe.Com
In the latest Lucasfilm Magasine, Rick Mc Callum has said that there won't
be a World release for Episode II.
He say that it's way too difficult to make 35 or 40 dubbings together.
Here in France, it's a very bad news, remind that we had TPM five months
after USA
It's all for this little news! MTFBWY!

If Ep2 were being shot on film, all George (or anyone else who wants their film to be a well guarded secret) has to do is print the negative and edit off the workprint. Send an assistant editor to the lab while the negative is printed to make sure nobody videotapes said negative "by accident". Hold projected screenings of the dailies and of the work in progress. Do not make videotapes! It's a radical concept but one in which there are no tapes flying all over the country or the world, getting lost track of, and subsequently bootlegged. Believe me, 35mm film is the most difficult shit in the world to steal, hide AND transfer onto videotape without anybody catching on real quick. I realize this is a step backward for digital, but who says you can't have the best of both worlds?

I will be in another galaxy next May far far away so I would like to be certain I am on a world that will be showing this fine motion picture extravaganza, will it be showing at the Endor Galactic Cineplex? I sure hope so!

For a guy who obsesses on secrecy and closed sets, not to mention stomping unauthorised cameras, George sure doesn't care about spoilers getting out as soon as he's gorged himself on opening weekend does he ? As soon as the film opens Stateside, there is no possible way that you don't know the plot (if this one HAS a plot) before the film hits the U.K. in the case of TPM a month later. He markets them as global media events, then he does a one country at a time release. As for McCallum, can someone please make that whiney-ass punk shut the hell up ? Several other manage the logistics of several dubs simultaneously. Why can't he stop being a hanger on for once an do something to earn his inflated paycheck ?
-
Not that i am dissing SW it's a classic but against Spider-Man no i don't think it stands a chance.I dont think episode two will have the as much good publicity as it pretty much used it up last time.
-
Then again, I didn't see Ep1, whatever that was, so I doubt I'll miss Ep2, whatever that is, wherever I might be on The Day It Opens Somewhere. For all the rest of you, be sure to pick up a lot of napkins at the concession stand to sop up all the drool.
-
Okay, I've smoked lot's of pot over this and have done some deep thinking and pondering over the persona that is Mr. George.
He is a trend setter, flat out. I was too young to see A New Hope in theaters, or hear the comments of movie reviewers, but I'm sure they were the same as they were for The Phantom Menace. I can hear Siskel and Ebert now (which one is dead?)at the screening for TPM, "Oh geez, another fabled cartoon promoted by Pepsi and Taco Bell..."
Yes folks, George has been persectuted since day one. He is labled as a fat bearded nerd with ideas that are stupid. Look at all the attention he is getting about not releasing Episode 2 simutaneously with the rest of the world. It also seems that every rich, blonde haired fan out on the Internet is complaining that the next installment of the Prequels will, "suck".
Hold on, I have to get a beer... Ah yes, carbonated barley water.
Think about it. I believe that 20 years from now, we and the rest of the movie-entertainment world, will reflect on "what they were doing when The Phantom Menace" came out...
What George and the rest of ILM are doing right now, are giving you, the whiney atari shirted fan, a glimpse of the future of film making. In fact, I predict that after George dies, he will be elevated to the same degree as Kubric, or any other great film maker.
Face it people, change is hard, and no one likes it. Try quitting smoking, your eating habits, cutting back on fat fried foods, drinking Pepsi or Coke products... whatever it is that requires change. You will be challenged, and that's what George Lucas is doing, changing the entertainment world.
History repeats itself. This is what Lucas is doing, and it will take 15-20 years for you, the fanboy, to realize that change and cutting-edge inventions, is what the world requires in order for realization of a genius.
Peace out-

Recall that Spiderman is going to be released a week or so BEFORE Episode2. That says something. Episode 2 may very well suck due to a 79 year old Sith Apprentice, too much CGI creatures/droids, and a 12-year old Boba Fett, whose "relationship" with his "father" reeks of NAMBLA (Nambla Fett). However Raimi has gave SpiderMan fans a rim-job with his asinine casting and PowerRanger villians.
-
More and more people are having sex with apple pies, or downloading movies? Personally, I prefer peach pies.
-
What a bunch of whiney fux we have here. It doesn't matter, I'll go see both Spidey and SW Ep 2 on their opening days (or the same day). I go to see movies for good stories and I have to admit I was turned off by Ep 1's childish nature at some points. Lucas is letting us see this as a decent into the Darkside for Anakin and maturity. So for all you purists and pessimists, SHUT THE FUCK UP!!
-
i have this strange, strange feeling that Spider Man will be a complete flop. It will in no way, match up to X-Men. X-Men was a winner, and caught on and struck a cord with the world, but spider man, as far as i can tell will be a flop, a teenage 98 degrees/BackStreet Boys movie toy, ah yes, reality bites.
later,..

Fuck sake. McCallum sais that the reason why Episode II doesn't get a world wide release is because of dubbing problems. But the thing is, I bet the UK won't get to see it as early as the US. Its always the same. Somebody should kidnap those two this christmas and make them wait atleast a month before they can watch 'Fellowship of the Ring'.
-
the goddamn film was fuckin shot down here so we'd better get to see it at the same time as the states....goddamn it, in these days of global comunication and information trafficking i'd like to know one good reason why its imposible to simultaneously release a film world wide, surely it doesnt take 5 months to send a real of film accross an ocean, and you cant tell me that countries need to wait to see if a film like epp 2 makes money in the states before they decide to run it or not, there is simply no excuse. It wouldnt be so bad if i didnt have a computer, television or a radio, but as soon as the damn film is released I will be unable to keep my mind spoiler free before my own viewing......if ever there needed to be a petition about something let it be this, make world wide releases of big budget movies standered practice...........
-
umm... who cares if the rest of the world sees this thing later?
Perhaps some americans should see things later every once in a while so they can just relax.
Eh we'll see it when we see, she'll be right... no worries mate... hmm I think I've figured out one of the reasons why us aussies are so relaxed getting everything much later than most folks and all. -
Think about it, he'll take our money twice...
-
So now the filmmaking side is done George and his Dogsboddy Mcullum can get to what they really enjoy doing Marketing.
Anyone get the feeling GL is starting to feel the heat of Lord of the Rings.
Sorry George but you Titanic is going to be sunk by Jacksons Iceberg. -
So what if Spidey is opening only a few weeks before it? The Mummy opened only a few weeks before TPM. Did that hurt its grosses? NO! Plus if Episode II is anything like the trash that was Episode I Spidey will deserve to kick Episode II's ass. No worldwide release huh? Thats a good thing. The sound of million of SW fans groaning in utter disapointment would be too much. BTW for that dude below who mentioned about Lucas being elevated to "Kubrick like levels". YEAH KEEP DREAMING BUD! I mean how many good movie has Lucas made himself? I can think of two. SW and American Graffiti. Not to mention all of the numerous crap hes made. Willow, Howard the Duck, Tucker, Radioland Murders, the Young Indiana Jones Adeventures, etc.. OK admittedly Lucas didn't personally handle that stuff but he wasx responsible for it getting made.

Yes, I truly believe that, Ep2 will be great, and I'm one of those guys who HATED Phantom Menace. I had a blast trashing that film on every Star Wars related Talk Back I could find, but that's history now and Ep2 is coming! I think it'll be awesome. Of course, if it sucks as bad as Ep1, and Jar Jar is still a dumb retard, then I won't hesitate to rip off its head and shit down its neck!

Why do all countries have to dub the movies? In sweden we just subtitle every movie and that doesn't take as much time as dubbing it. Only the disney animated movies (kid-flicks) get dubbed. But almost everyone in sweden agrees that dubbing sucks and sometimes they show two versions in theaters; one dubbed and one subtitled. Wouldn't averyone agree that you'd much rather see a subtitled film than a dubbed one?
-
They film these damn films in the UK and Australia with British and Australian crews but many in those same crews have to wait at least a month to see their work on screen as compared to the States. YES the USA is the main backer, producer and consumer of the bloody films but if the only reason they can come up with against a worldwide release date is that they can't dub the fucking thing fast enough then they should at least have the decency to release it in English-speaking (or um, ENGLISH)countries at the same time. And since someone else rightly pointed out, dubbed movies suck a big dog's cock so they should go the Crouching Tiger route and release subbed versions worldwide, perhaps followed by dubbed versions for the feckless and illiterate.

All these douche bags bashing Episode II know they'll be waiting
by indiana jones
All these people who bash Episode II are the ones who will see it multiple times and will make it one of the top 5 box office films of all time. Why fight it? You know you love it!
-
Why dont they release it in all the english speaking countries at once at least?
-
How about a real story, instead of taking a shot at the movie just to champion Lord of the Rings. Personally I don't give a rats ass if the movie opens two months later were I am, just as long as its good.
-
Without rhyme nor reason, the senseless bludgeoning of Ep.II continues. Seldom has speculation caused so much anguish. I've seen people sweat less off stock futures. If Ep.II isn't released globally on the same day, I suspect that won't harm its chances from making the rough equivelent of Nigeria's deficit at the box office. The loyal geek hordes (of which I am gladly a part) will do their duty, only to report back to their computers to trash it.++++++++++++++++++++++++ All this aside, might I ask if all this hatred is little more than self loathing for feeling betrayed over TPM? I'm certain the points of this question have been covered in depth, but might I urge some facet of restraint, some plea to reserve judgement on Ep.II...please? It may be in vogue to naysay Lucas, but call me a rebel--I'm going to wait until I see it.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As for the Spiderman rivalry I'll be certain to feed both fires, along with the rest of the aforementioned hordes, so that pretty much cancels things out. Let's get on with it.

Peter Jackson is a serious talent, George Lucas is blinded by his own franchise. Jackson does not have to rely on Lawrence Kasdan to rewrite LOTR parts 2+3 to make it passable. Face it LOTR will blow everybody away, it is not some cynical attempt at a fucking fairy tale like Star Wars is now, it is Jackson's vision. Who cares if he has a large budget to play with, he is still making a movie that he cares about, and because of that LOTR will be amazing and beautiful. Something Star Wars has ceased to be since the Phantom Menace came along and dug up the corpse. Don't be such a fool.
-
I love how it is Star Wars against LOTR, Star Wars vs. Spiderman. Star Wars will outgross Spiderman easily and LOTR is kind of a wild card. I would imagine that it will do about 200, but not much more domestically. And for those bitching about no global release date...it is an American Film! Snatch was out in the UK forever before in the states, same with The Limey. Not to be jingoistic, but there are advantages to being American, just as I'm sure there are advantages to being from other countries...I just can't think of any.
-
Don't worry, I won't go till it's distributed everywhere and even then only to a matinee. George Lucas screwed up the first one, I have little desire to run to see this one.

EMPIRE is the heart of the series thanks to Leigh Brackett's crackling repartee. The series became resonant thanks to her.

There is no rivalry. You people that are trying to pin one movie against the other are in a pointless struggle. LOTR comes out in December, Star Wars comes out in May, and we don't even know when Spiderman will come out. Could be any time during the Summer. Could be September, a whole 4 months away. There's no competision here folks. Why are you trying to make one? That bored? You people that are saying I know I'm just going to see this one and none of the others are, frankly, full of shit. You know you'll be in the lines like the rest of us when each of these films come out, saying how this one is going to rock, getting just as excited as everyone else. For those of you who are actually that dense to refuse out of principle are just plain stupid, and I feel sorry for you. All of these movies are in the same genre for cripes sake. And hell, I know it's been said a bizillion times, but there wouldn't be a Star Wars without the LOTR. I imagine there wouldn't be much of a film industry for fantasy without Star Wars. And folks, Spiderman's been around a long time, he's greatly influenced comic book history, which in turn has taken a hand in today's pop culture. Each film is important in its own right. Give me a break. And then as well, each of these films has a prominent film director behind the helm. No worries. It's not worth it people. Enjoy them all. If you have a favorite film that's fine. But when you try to deppreciate the other films mention here, you are in effect really taking potshots at your own selves. Each of these films successes will more than likely help the other ones out in turn. When you're on a roll, you're on a roll. What would you want to have just one big fantasy film come out every 10 years? In my opinion, that would suck. ***and AROR (sp), didn't you say the same thing about the LOTR Niagra Falls report. Hey, we get what we can get. Do you expect them to release whole scripts and completed scenes to the public? Or are you looking for scandels? Don't get it. Later...
-
EX: Many directors are now embracing the DVD format as being able to present "their" version of a film. How do you feel about this?
OM: I wonder. I don't really want to do something like that. When it comes down to it, I think the director doesn't know everything about the movie. Everyone always thinks if you want to know something, you talk to the director. I don't think that's true. I think the answers lie inside every single viewer. -
Look, the way I see it I don't care if Ep 2 isn't released simultaneously, I'll just get the Divx of it (Y'know there will be one) George always says he wants us to see his vision in the best possible conditions, but if his company is going to pull this shit...then fuck them. I do feel sorry for the Brits though, those poor bastards get shafted on release dates all the time.
Spidey will be great and Ep 2 should be pretty cool as well. As for LOTR I'm glad Pete Jackson loves his country so much that we'll be seeing it the same time as the U.S.
Remember they're just films...we WILL eventually see them.
Oh and Harry get rid of the fucking annoying pop-up ads they are making visits to your site really suck! Have a poll see how many want them. -
$431.065m (USA) + $491.314m (Non-USA) = $922.379m. *** Yes, that's right - NINE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWO MILLION DOLLARS! Is that for real? I hope I made a mistake, cuz that's fucking insane. No film that bad should even be ALLOWED to take that much. There needs to be a freakin' LAW to stop a POS like that. It also tells you that a boycott of Ep2 would be futile. Star Wars is on a global scale, and that's A LOT of idiots! Yes, it's a noble cause but doomed to failure as Ep2 might also be a great film, so not many would even consider staying away.
-
He just cracks me up. Can't wait! Sorry, all you French bastards will just have to wait for yours. In the meantime, you can enjoy the dramatic stylings of the ever-talented Jake Lloyd in the Phantom Menace again and again and again on VHS and now DVD! Neato Mosquito! Look out Haley Joel Osment, there is a new boy-wonder in town. And his childhood will be ruined by fame and fortune even more than yours. Have you sucked off a Wookie today?
-
You know, Drknight, you need to be dumped off of the face of the earth. I guess your parents must have dropped you too often (or maybe not often enough...). You know, you come here to someone's well respected web site, and talk unspeakable trash about the owner and maintainer of this site! Unreal! Instead, what you should be doing is giving mad props to Harry, start showing some appreciation for the news and info that he and his "goons" send in everyday. Cause it's apparent that you don't know a damn thing about anything that is going on in H-Wood, none of us do. That's why we come here! You know, if your not going to be showing some appreciation to the man, you know that you can start your own web site up, and state whatever you want. As far as the pop ups, it has nothing to do with greed, it's very expensive to keep a web site of this caliber in tact. Get a life, but until then, get to steppin, fool.
Sincerely,
Grant Gibson, III

American Graffiti is a great movie, proving that Lucas is not entirely inept. However, The Empire Strikes Back is a classic due to Kasdan writing the script with him and Kerschner directing. I think that this goes beyond the fact that Ep2 will be global, and idiots will flock. The problem is Lucas himself, why won't he get some outside help to write scripts, or direct the story? Instead, he gives us this soulless blue and green screen movie with great actors reduced to puppets. George just can't cut it; I would not care if he we all became his slaves as long as his movies were enthralling masterpieces. Nothing will touch Empire from him, and that is sad. He is like Hitler, surrounded by sycophants, who dare not speak out against his turgid output.

If George Lucas really cared for the films, he would find a way
by brokentusk
I realise I'm going to be killed for saying that, but if films as big as 'The Lord of the Rings' can do it, then George should try to put on some competition. Peter Jackson's like: "Give the fans the films." George Lucas is like: "Yeah, whatever..."
Actually I think it's the evil influence of Rick McCallum at work again... that man is whispering evil things in George's ear I tell you. Fuck "it can't be done", if 'Lord of the Rings' can do it, so can 'Star Wars'. Oh well, I knew this was coming anyway... -
Amidala, Naboo, Jar Jar, Tax routes...? Who gives a shit whether Episode 2 gets released on the same day globally or not? This is major news Harry? After the shitfest that Episode 1 was I don't think many are holding their breaths about Episode 2. And to think of all those stupid mutherfuckers who slept on the street in front of the theatre months in advance only to see The Phantom Menace. Lmao...Shit, that's funny.
-
Hey, Mecha, just had to get this out there. If you've somehow missed my previous post, I shall repeat. Such hatred towards LOTR and love for Star Wars is actually very knaive and somewhat asinine. There would be no Star Wars without the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien made fantasy what it is today. And like it or not, Star Wars is a fantasy film. It is not science fiction; it is fantasy. It's a space opera, but nothing grounded in scientific fact. There is no groundbreaking theories and there is no scientific proclamations and revelations. Star Wars is pure fantasy. Sorry to burst your bubble there. And Dark Knight number 9, or whatever your name is (can't get back to check), you are a very negative individual. I hope you look forward to some things in life, because it certainly doesn't seem as if you look forward to going to the movies. While it's true that Harry here has liked some stinkers, it's also true that he's liked some real winners. Actually, it seems he gets excited and really likes almost everything these days. But hey, that's what he does for a living, and it certainly doesn't mean it's the kiss of death for him to like one. Besides anyone who's anyone can't help but get excited about these up and coming prospects of these films. And for that matter, if you have to weigh the films he's liked against the films he's not liked, wouldn't it stand to reason that the odds are in his favor to get it right this time? After all, no one's seen any of these films yet.
-
You are right, nobody could argue against that. It no longer is for the fans in the Star Wars camp, and you are right about Rick McCallum, he is like Himmler. Sigh. Go Peter Jackson's ship, and all who sail in her.
-
Yeah, Rick, this is all about completing the foreign dubs. Remind me of that when Episode II opens in July HERE IN ENGLAND, WHERE WE SPEAK ENGLISH. This is not about having enough time, it's all about strategy and commercialism. Wanna prove me wrong, McCallum? Then release Episode II here in Britain on May 25th.

That's right, the biggest sporting event on Earth will run from June-July in Japan next year and NO-ONE on this planet except for the good 'ol USA will be going anywhere close to any movie theater in that time. Period. Ok, i know you Yanks don't give a damn about football (a.k.a. 'sah-kur' in your parlance), but i can assure you that everyone else in the world does and will be watching in record numbers. Releasing any high profile movie while the World Cup is on is commercial suicide worldwide. This year, with no major football (sorry, 'sah-kur') tourney taking place anywhere, most of the blockbusters have enjoyed simultaneous releases in the UK and USA, but that will NOT be the case next year. Jeez, do you people think of nothing but movies? THE BIGGEST SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORLD, people!

I'm Sorry, But Leigh Brackett (And Kershner) Saved STAR WARS
by mrbeaks
Had EMPIRE, the trickiest episode due to its pre-determinedly unresolved nature, not deepened the characters and our attachment to them, many would have never returned for JEDI. Brackett put some flesh on the archetypes and made them endearing. Technological advancement, no matter haw epoch-making, cannot sustain a franchise, and this is coming from someone who was there back in 1977.
-
You from the US? You get games way ahead of us, you get the good RPGs we never get. So shut the fuck up. Remember this aswell, George Lucas has his head up his arse, people have lured him into thinking that he is telling a story. Once he was, now he just gets his design team to think up some characters that will sell the toys. Fuck him and fuck TPM and its scene setting, it set the scene for two more pieces of space junk. He has lost it. It hurts to even think that, but Star Wars is riding on the brand name not the clarity of vision and certainy not the story.
-
You are damn right about Empire Beaks. Just because we liked the originals does not mean we should conform and like the inferior shit that is Star Wars now. Empire's story was compelling and the whole film had a dark feel, something that really got to you and made you care. The unresolved ending showed that a story was in progress, and showed that the film makers were wiling to engage us emotionally. Where is that now?
-
SPOILERS: Lucas's filthy asshole, Rick McCallum has said "forget everything you know about Boba Fett". Lucas is making shit up as he goes along. Why are people already pissed off about Episode II before it even comes out? Because some dumbass from Lucas Incorpated LEAKED the Episode II storyboards. Also theforce.net already has much of the script, which it probably obtained from former theforce.net staff members who now work for Lucas and the official website. Every fucking website has a "plot synopsis" of Episode II.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The storyboards show us the fucking clonewars now are basically fought in a gladiator style arena with the Jedi fighting a bunch of BATTLEDROID and new SUPERBATTLEDROIDS. Only this time, the much beloved BATTLEDROIDS KILL A LOT OF THE JEDI. That is until Yoda, Padme Amidala, and some new CLONETROOPERS arrived and save everyone. Thats right fuckos, BattleDroids now can kill a whole bunch of Jedi. CloneTroopers can kill a whole bunch of BattleDroids. Therefore CloneTroopers are more powerful than Jedi?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Al Sharpton, CloneTroopers, and Episode II. Jango Fett, played by a Native Pacific Islander and 5 foot 9 inch tall, Tem Morrison, is the original source of the Clonetroopers. Other Native Pacific Islanders play Clone Captains etc. Now Americans, being the dumbasses we are going to cry racims when they see the CloneTroopers . "Civil Rights" leaders are going to go apeshit angry. JarJar, Boss Nass and the Niemodians will look like NAACP image award winners when this shit goes down.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jango Fett's "relationship" with Boba Fett. Some have already brought this shit up already. In exchange for being the source of the CloneTroopers, Jango Fett is given the first clone ever, a 12-year-old boy named Boba Fett. They take off together in SLAVE-1, which presumbably is now a minivan/suv with cupholders. Who is going to buy Episode 2's Slave 1 toys when they come out, when everyone that wants one probably has one. Also...WHAT THE FUCK DOES A GROWN MAN WANT TO DO WITH A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY?
********************************************************************Christopher Lee, Count Dooku, and Darth Golden Girls. Chris Lee is playing Count Dooku, a former Jedi who now is a separist, and who is revealed at the end of the movie to be Darth Tyrannus, Sidious's new apprentice. I'm sorry, a 79-year old fucking guy is going to be the new Sith Apprentice... after Ray Park's Darth Maul? Oh don't worry we are told, instead of Lord Maul's double-bladed saber, we are treated to Chris Lee's "taunting". What is Episode II supposed to be the fucking WWF? You can just imagine Lucas/Jonathan "Young Indy Jones" Hales dialog. Look at Episode 1, everyones favorite scene was the final lightsaber battle, only to be interspersed with the asinine CGI BattleDroid/JarJar and the Gungans. Episode II will have no Darth Maul. Don't worry it will have a eldery man "taunting".
********************************************************************
LUCAS's kids coming up with stupid ass PREQUEL CHARACTER NAMES. Recall that Lucas's sone Jett came up the the term "GunGan". Well with Episode II we treated with other Lucas children inspired names or at least they are the ones who are blamed for it. Episode II has "Jango Fett", Ambu Fett, and Dextser Finster. Presumably the clones are given a "FETT" designation sort of like Darth is for the Sith. "Ambu Fett" is a real Episode II name as is Darth Tyrannus. Lucas named a teenage drug dealer "Elian Sleazebagano" and a 4 to 6 armed Godzuki type creature named "Dexter Finster". FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LUCAS, please stop having your adopted children create Star Wars character names.
********************************************************************
The death of Shmi Skywalker. Shmi, mother of the virgin birthed "chosen one" is beaten to death by lowly fucking Tusken Raiders. What the fuck?
********************************************************************
In closing I will like to say of course I will probably see Episode II multiple times. I won't be seeing the movie on the day it opens. However I will go down to the 100-screen multiplex and laugh and cackle at the sad fuckers who waited line for weeks in advance.

In other words, show some respect for the Star Wars saga, the grand daddy of them all. By the way, I'm not a mindless follower of mainstream blockbusters, I do enjoy underground and independent cinema as well. But I do not care for the opinions of those who summarily put down the defining cultural cinematic icon of my generation, even if it be a huge studio film.

That's the problem ZeroCorpse, the man is a LOUSY storyteller. He needs other people to write his damn movies, otherwise they're crap. I just can't understand how a stupid film like TPM can be considered "great" simply because it was laying the groundwork of things to come... It completely SUCKS as a standalone movie, but we're supposed to cut it some slack because somewhere down the line all these intricate subplots will be realized? Well, whoopee-fucking-do. A NEW HOPE happens to be my favorite of the series, not ESB, and still manages to be great ON ITS OWN MERITS, without needing TESB or ROTJ to make sense. I think that's really a lame excuse created by PM lovers to cover up the dismal quality. "Oh you can't judge this film without the other two", they whine... as if that's a valid defense for a piece of shit. Hmm, I see... here goes.... I was bored to death by the story, made insane by Jar Jar, wanted to short circuit those stupid droids, hated Jake "little shit" Lloyd, thought the Gungans were retards, too much ridiculous dialog, ludicrous cgi aliens... and let's not forget the ultimate horror - the Droid/Gungan land battle! BUT, I have to put all that out of my mind because IT'S PART OF A SERIES, and the "best" is yet to come! Fuck that. I don't care how good Ep2 and Ep3 may be, Episode1 will ALWAYS be a disaster. I despise that film... Btw, if everyone "shuts the hell up" as you so eloquently put, Lucas would only hear his own rampant ego day & night. And that's bad... very bad. Don't do it kids. Just say no to Lucas.

I hate to say it, but you've got a pointless point there. At least when it comes to Lord of the Rings. I hate that I have to keep saying this, but, well, here I go again. Oh yeah, well there wouldn't be a Star Wars if it wasn't for Lord of the Rings. Once again, Tolkien made fantasy what it is today when he published first the Hobbit and then the Lord of the Rings. No one can deny that. And again, Star Wars is a fantasy film. Get it, Star Wars=fantasy, fantasy=LOTR? Nothing personal, and I'm not taking anything away from Star Wars. I agree with you, fantasy in film would not be what it is today without Star Wars. It's just that you can't say that Star Wars is bigger and better than LOTR either. Nor, for that matter should you say it about Spider-Man. Spider-Man's been around for a long time. It's lent a lot to our pop-culture. We owe it to Stan Lee to make a serious attempt at his works. Star Wars is by far the youngest kid on the block. So I'd be carefull when slinging the ol' well this wouldn't be anything without that argument around. None of these films should be dismissed. They are all important in their own particular way.

Summer of 1977 (or was it 78?) a 5yr old boy and his dad are waiting patiently in line to see a "Spiderman/Cactus Jack" double bill at a local cinema. Finally dad steps up to ticket girl..."sorry..sold out, but star wars in on screen A".
"sorry son, shall we see that instead",a tearfull nod and off we go, reluctantly id like to add.
Twenty four years later and it would appear the opportunity to right a wrong has come about...how often does that happen! Feck off Lucas! Im in Stans corner! -
Yes, I do realize the contradictory statement in my post... Lucas' films are shit when he writes them, but my favorite Star Wars movie is "A New Hope"... but IMO, it was a fluke! And to be honest, the dialog is pretty lame in that too, but it had a magic quality which somehow overcame that, and I think the execs at 20th Century Fox kept George in check. Remember, they were taking a RISK with Star Wars. Universal rejected it! So Lucas couldn't do *anything* he wanted. Give him total freedom and you're asking for trouble.

I'm gonna be there opening day for EP II, Spiderman and LOTR. I hope they're all good. If they're all successful, you know what that means? More sci-fi and fantasy films. Why do you guys want to keep pitting these films against each other? "Spiderman will kick EP II's ass!" "EP II will kick LOTR's ass!", blah, blah, blah. Look, history has shown that whenever a new Star Wars film opens that film is the biggest box office hit of that year. TPM was the biggest hit of '99, even with as much negative press as it got. It's the third highest grossing film of all time for Christ's sake! LOTR will probably do very well and so will Spiderman and unless some of the bad press from TPM affects it, EP II will probably end up in the top ten biggest moneymakers of all time list, alongside the rest of the movies in the series. And I hope it is huge and that it is excellent, but that doesn't mean that I don't want the other films to be successful also.

I feel compelled to respond to a variety of sentiments expressed here
When the hatred for Lucas and friends gets to point that McCallum is compared to a Nazi (Himmler), I think it is safe to say it has gotten out of hand. I think, and hope, that it is just exaggeration, but judging by the ridiculous comments made about the Lucas group, you never know. But for those who feel their lives have been irrevocably harmed by TPM, I -
Killer talkback. I'm so glad movies aren't greenlighted based on talkbacks because I really want to see Episode 2 and 3, I wanted to see them in 1983. But I've heard they have people in them, so they're kind of ripping off The Matrix.

You know where all the people who won't be seeing Episode 2 are?
by cruel shoes
Oh, and I feel like I'm fucked twice on these dickhead non-star wars fans because they're going to talk for three years about how they'r not going to see Ep2, and then they'll clog the talkbacks on opening day with their thoughts on Ep2. I wish they really wouldn't see it so the talkbacks that day would be a good discussion between actual fans.

by rawhkey
So, here it is. Another brief mention of something from the Star Wars galaxy, and wham, a bunch of negativity. Lets see, Lucas is money hungry and an egoist and this and that. You cornballs have your shit all twisted and backwards. Do any of you know what Mr Francis For Coppola told Lucas during the whol first trilogy? He said "George, you could make this into a religion and you'd be the prophet". George didn't say, it Francis did. George laughed at the idea. The only problem is goofballs like you 'boycotters' probably were starting to think of this thing as a religion. Well, if someone has a huge ego, he'd fuel that concept, and try and make myth reality through belief. If George has a huge ego, he would and probably could have done just that. But do you know what he did instead? Even though he knew it may disappoint some fans, he put in that speach about midichlorians. Why, you ask, would someone do that? So all you boneheads who would have been following him like the new Mesiah would wake up from your dream like state. George took us to that Galaxy many years ago, and wham, due to idiots like you, he had to put extra caffeine in the coffee and wake your dumb asses up! Caffeine, in this case, means Midichlorians and Jar Jar. Now, that you've woken from your little fantasy, you say you're boycotting Episode II. Great! Take all you and all those damn trekkies who hopped on board, 8 or 9 years ago too. Dont go see the next movie, please. For the sake of people like me and probably countless others who dont know what the hell you're so distressed at in the first place. What you all should do, to really stick it to George, is go see that next Star Trek movie! In fact, go, and line up and camp out for it. Then by Gods grace, George will know he has woken you all from the coma where you came from. The only problem is...societies probably better off with you all in a coma lol..funny how that is. Next bit.....so George is in it for the money eh? Gosh, did you see all those toys he built? and all those bottles of Pepsi he sold? And all those Taco Bell things? With his own bare hands, he did it all. Errr, hang on. No..thats not right. Actually, the food related items were all a Pepsi venture. Lets see. George lets people know he's going to make a movie. He says hmmm, highest bidder gets to make the food stuff. Pepsi, > gave George something like 2 billion...or was it trillion?? for rights to make that stuff at Taco Bell and such. You know what, folks? If Pepsi offered you $1000 to put your face on a can, you'd probably go for it. I dont think you can imagine 2 billion. After that, folks, it's in Pepsi or Hasbro's hands. They can market the shit out of it, like they did. They can do anything, pertaining to whatever contract. It's out of Georges hands. Of course, George has a stigma of starting the merchandising craze for summer movies. I think ole George taught Pepsi, Hasbro, and any other company who blindly thought they could rip off people the way they tried to. It was a huge loss to Pepsi! Thank you, George, and hopefully those companies will pay attention to a product before they rip your kids off. If George wanted all that money for himself, he would have built his own toy company. If Todd McFarlane can, with his billions, I'm sure George could too. Well, George didn't. His reasoning is probably simple. A toy company should be able to handle making toys. > Thats not his concern. So here we are. Almost at the exact opposite point we were some 24 years ago. Neat how that can happen. Anywho...to the whiners, please dont go see Episode II. Go see something else. If I'm lucky enough, I'll be the only one in the theater. :)

... Brackett's script involvement on Empire was minimal and her contribution was in rough drafts based on Lucas' notes. She got a credit because she died before a working draft was completed and Lawrence Kasdan was brought on board. She was a great writer as exemplified in her work with Howard Hawks, but it was Kasdan who saved Star Wars, and it's always been of my opinion that Kasdan should have been asked back to write the prequels. Either that, or his son Jake Kasdan who wrote and directed Zero Effect. Keep it in the family, because those guys can write. It's bad juju that Lucas is writing and directing all of the prequels. His original plan of Frank Darabont on Ep 2 and David Fincher on Ep 3 sounded absolutely fucking stellar, but while Lucas may know how to spin a great yarn, he can't actually do the writing/directing work to back it up. ANH was pretty weak in comparison with Empire, but we excuse him for it because in it's base nature ANH is just a flat-out adventure flick with some revolutionary visuals. Lucas won't get the same consideration these days, when everyone and their mother is an amateur film critic and there are forums like these talk backs where people definitely influence what others think. The buzz around Ep 2 is that it's more in the vein of Empire and Lucas it very conscious about pleasing his fans this time around. Let's hope he delivers the goods, because as I do with ANH I was able to turn a blind eye to TPM, just enough so that I don't cringe and curse when I think about it, but if Lucas doesn't deliver a solid middle installment which is the bridge that really carries the weight of the story, he should bring someone else in for Ep 3 who might just retain some of the series' dignity. Maybe Ep 2 will kick serious ass, from the spoiler information I've read it sounds promising. But it all falls on Lucas' shoulders and whether or not he can tell an effective and good story. In the Ep 1 script there was a line where Anakin exclaimed "Great gobs a bantha poo-doo!" It didn't make it to the finished film, but we can't have any of that, the audience would absolutely crucify Lucas, and a lot of people already have their nails handy.
-
Where did you get that Lucas originally planned to let Darabount do EpII and Fischer do EpIII. I never heard that. What I did hear was that he was going get Darabount to write or co-write EpI. If my memory is correct, Lucas announced he would direct EpI early on, but wasn't sure about II and III. While finishing I, Lucas then decided to do all three, so where did you hear that he had an original plan with specific people in mind to do the last 2 episodes. And as far as TPM is concerned, some of you are going to have to face some facts. No matter how much you hated it, it was, by any objective standard, a tremendous success. The people on these boards do not represent the general public. Most people who saw TPM liked it. That may go against your statistically insignificant anecdotal evidence ('I hated it and so did my friends'), but the fact is that no movie could make $431 million without good word of mouth. No movie, not even a Star Wars movie, is immune to bad word of mouth, and if EVERYBODY hated it so much then bad word of mouth would have led to steep weekly drop-offs and a total much less than a mammoth $431million (I hated Independence Day, but I wouldn't be so naive as to suggest thats the majority sentiment). And please don't say that a bunch of blind fans going back over and over pushed the total so high, because to do so would be grossly overestimating the number of such people. So I seriously doubt Lucas will let some disgruntled fans dictate the tone of the next movies, but you shouldn

Everyone who knows all about
Episode II already knows that it
will suck. Sure it will LOOK wonderful but as for plot it does
not deserve to be put on film. I was always hoping that the Clone Wars would be some type of World
War and that the word "Clone" was
a solar system or location, not
actual cloning ( YAWN ! ) I'll see
it eventually but you sure as hell won't see me on opening day ! -
Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World after spending some time in the USA. The whole concept of a consumer society, living for nothing more than pleasure, and constantly on the move practising some mundane activity came from his time spent there. He claimed that there was always movement, noise, nobody could stay still. I am with him, his family helped out Darwin push forward the theory of evolution... Although I like Bush, he is a character, he has no clue about politics but he tries. I doubt he will lead us into any wars, and let him have his big star wars defence system; it'll be better than Lucas' attempts. He needs the protection from the global panning he is going to get. We Brits are great, you Yanks have your moments, but do not diss football: I SAID FOOTBALL, REAL FOOTBALL, NOT BIG BLACK GUYS WHO FOUND CHRIST BASHING TEN BELLS OF SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER. I am going now.

First, the boycott. Some have questioned its purpose due to the fact that it could never affect thye grosses of SW2. I will not be seeing SW2, and suggesting others who feel the same do so as well, as a matter of personal pride. From what I know of Lucas he lacks class and honor; hence, I will not make a hypocrite of myself by contributing to his well being by giving him my money, no matter that it would be in only a miniscule amount. For all those who dislike the idea of giving Lucas their money, for whatever reason, don't see SW2 just because the hype, and society at large, tell you that you should. Missing a piece of fluff fantasy like the Star Wars series should hardly be of such importance that it is a detriment to your life.----Which somewhat leads me to my response to Halloween68. The reason so much bile is spewed forth over the quality of the Star Wars movies is precisely because it has become important to the lives these people live. For whatever reason(the only I have ever been able to settle on is lack of satisfaction with their lives coupled with the inability to achieve satisfaction through a deficiency of will or situation) these people have come to identify with the movies. They have made the movies part of their valuation of themselves, tied up its succes with their perception of their own success in life. When a person identifies with something, be it idea, object, or locale an attack on that thing becomes an attack on the person. This is why people can die when, say, the Celts(?) beat the Rangers (will our neighbors across the pond forgive my unfamiliarity with the names of their footbal teams), or when Muslims meet Christians.

First off- How can you judge a movie you have yet to see even a trailer of? And if you think that trailer of Spider Man will top any trailer of EP2 you will see- Let me rephraise that, If you think the Spider Man movie will even top even the trailer of EP2 I don't know what world you have been on for the last 24yrs- Oh yeah, that's right some of you havn't been on Earth that long. What I am saying is, yes TPM was a bit dissapointing but it is something that George gave us in order to give us way more than anyone seems to notice. Everyone is calling GL a sell out and doing this for $$$ and the so fourth. Well what do you think it takes to run a studio like ILM??!!
Almost every fantasy or Sci Fi movie not to mention TV show employs the use of ILM. Even Over Seas. Final Fantasy even used it's sound stage and I believe more. And for those newies into the HK scene, and trust me, I can tell there is a ton of you on this site- even they have used ILM for some of their effects. And I am not talking about wires. HK was a master at that waaaaay before some of you got your cherry popped with Crouching Tiger, Jet Li or even the Matrix. What I am saying is, nomatter what you may think of now, of the guy you once thaught of as God- it is because of him and only him that you are able to enjoy the effects and sounds that you have now in films today!
I was upset at TPM too, but I will always give respect to anyone who has gone the mile like he has. I am not sure yet, but I wouldn't be surprized if I see ILM in the credits of both Spider and LOTR. It's the movie biz. You got the money, do it, if not suffer and find someone who can do it cheaper. If anyone owns the DVD of Bad Boys you know what trying to go cheaper got them. You want to be cheap- try this studio, you want to spend money on a quality and cared for effect, go to ILM! Speaking of money, I don't think GL told any of you to buy any figures or bottles of pepsi a few years back. The man is not just a movie maker, he is a business man, you know. And as for the WW release thing: Why do most of you care anyways- as far as I can tell you're all going to boycott... right? Man that Center Row Seat should be easy pickings for those of us who have a life. -
