Quick Glimpse Of ONE HOUR PHOTO!!

Published at:  Jul 12, 2001 4:02:27 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

As I said in my recent piece about Robin Williams and his upcoming roles, I am freakin' dying to see this film by Mark Romanek. I love this script, and I think the film has a chance at being something special. Wish I'd known there was a screening last night. I would have put my henchmen to work. Anyway, Brodie's Dixie Cup made it in, and here's what he has to say. It's a quick review, but gives us an idea of what he thought...

word up, this is brodie's dixie cup with some news from a test screening...
i just saw one hour photo at a test screening in palos verdes, california.
the audience seemed to be a little mixed..but overall it seemed to have a
pretty good response from the audience. i liked it. robin williams was this
guy who works in this photo shop and pretty much it's his whole life...he
knows everything about photos pretty much. he runs a machine and he knows
when it's color levels are off. he is obsessed with this family who always
brings in pictures. he is obsessed with the family and they seem to be the
family he never had growing up. the film moves slowly for a reason...so we
get to understand this character better. some people might think that sucks
for one reason or another and will feel the film show have moved a lot
faster. the same people who complain about this film moving too slowly are
going to be the same ones who felt that unbreakable was slow. i felt the
film moved fairly quickly. i never got bored...which is good. he keeps the
photos of this family up on a wall in his house. when they get photos
developed, he develops his own set...so that's how that works. when hundreds
of photos developed on the machine are never accounted for, sy (robin
williams) gets fired. so his whole life is pretty much over...since
developing photos was not just his occupation, but also his life....so it
sucked for him a lot. on his last day he discovers a set of photos which
show the husband of the family he is obsessed with having an affair with a
co-worker. sy cannot believe that this man with this perfect life that he
never had was being thrown away. sy is pissed and this is where he pretty
much goes from just creepy to demented. I'm not going to go any furthur than
this because honestly when you're watching the film you're not sure whether
sy is going to do something to his family, the girl the husband is having an
affair with, the husband, or many other possibilities...and that's part of
the fun of this movie. Great performances from everyone...and Mark Ramenek
or whatever his name is did a pretty awesome job directing. the film ran
about 2 hours long. they said it was a very early work print...however i
could see this film being released today and not having any problems.
awesome film that's definately going to be worth checking out when it hits
theaters.

Robin Williams in a Good movie??

    by rowlf_the_dog

I have to admit, I am looking forward to this. After his last four or five flicks, Robin could use a hit. This may not be it, but at least it might be a decent movie.

    The psycho route

    by tar heel

Isn't Robin playing the bad guy in the remake of "Insomnia" as well? I like the toned down Robin Williams much better than the schticky one. Now how about more voice work for cartoons? Eddie Murphy seems to be doing quite well at it.

    Robin Williams

    by oldirtyaztec

In the words of Maxim - "Quick, get this man some Cocaine!". Playing a psychotic photshop man is just what Robin Williams needs to step out of his bath of family friendly softsauce. I hope to God it works out for the man.

    Strawberry Fields

Not that the title has anything to do with this....

I'm looking forward to seeing WIllaims and this film, I just hope that Williams can pull off a role without his incessant ad-libs. They ARE funny, but it's like he can't have a role without them these days. I know the great serious acting ability is STILL in there somewhere.

Rumor about the Soundtrack...can anyone confirmed?

    by jungle-face-jake

I read a few months ago on Dark Horizons that Mark Romanek made an offer to his pal, Trent Reznor, to do the score. That would be awesome news for any die-hard Nine Inch Nails fan!! If this is true, then expect something really creepy yet tender. If Reznor is going to score, then we are all in for a treat. Robin Williams is gonna kick all of us in the stomach, making us VOMIT the sap that he made us eat while watching his last 4 movies.

  • Okay I am stretching this a bit but how bizzare would that be? In the end Robin is about to poke the cheating husband's eyes out but then laments about all the things he's seen....Nevermind, too much Blade Runner on the brain. But do you see how the photo obsession could be connected with this? Okay I'll shut up.

    The script was second rate

I read a draft of One Hour Photo a few months ago, and I must say, it sort of bit. It felt too small for a star with the wattage of Robin Williams. Not to say that small films can't be great, but it is weird when you see a big popcorn actor in a small, arty peice. Especially a peice of crap, which One Hour Photo will surely be.

    Pretty Much

    by chestrockwell

Nice enough review, but please use caps and paragraphs. And stop repeating yourself and using the phrase "pretty much". If you must, then use "mostly" instead, since I'd relate it to Cartman and think it humorous ..... mostly.
And speaking of ad-libbing, as one poster mentioned, I wonder if Robin Williams suggests it or the director asks for it. Hmmmm.
    ....... Thank yoooooooooooouuuuu.

The last time I saw Robin Williams pissed off...

    by exalay

was in DEAD AGAIN. It was practically the last time I liked him onscreen, too (props to GOOD WILL HUNTING, of course). He's pretty good at on-screen anger...so what's with all the fam flicks? Go with your darkside, Robin, it is your nature...
