Quick JAY & SILENT BOB Review!!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
So, anyway... THE JAZZMAN drops this review off at The Labs today and asks if there's any more news on ONE HOUR PHOTO, Mark Romanek's upcoming film. Turns out, I got a review for it in, and will be posting it in a moment. I'll also be working on my own JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK review, hopefully to post later this afternoon. For now, here's what JAZZMAN had to say about it...
In my humble opinion it certainly wasn't the best Kevin Smith film (my vote
is for CHASING AMY), but laugh for laugh it was probobly the funniest. The
audience seemed to be really into it from the start and was laughing,
sometimes extremely loudly, throughout the movie.
I'll try to do this with no big spoilers. The plot is simple and set up
right from the start. Bluntman and Chronic is being made into a movie in
Hollywood and Jay and Silent Bob as characters are being dissed on the
internet, not to mention not even being compensated for using their
characters. In fact, they don't even know a film about them is being made
or even what the internet is! So they set out to Hollywood to trash the
film, and thus stop those internet geeks from continuing to hurt their "good
name."
That's when the film kicks into road movie gear, with a pretty big subplot
involving an all girl gang with a spunky Shannon Elisabeth. From here we
finally get to LA in the last third of the movie, which includes, by far,
the best and most hilarious parts.
This film is part old fashioned slapstick and part satire. The satire is
part hollywood/internet film culture and part Kevin Smith movie satire. It
basically throws a lot of ideas and jokes together and attempts to see what
works. Most of it works, either within the story or not, but we don't care
either way because it's funny. To not know the Kevin Smith universe does
hurt in the viewing. In fact even missing one film would take many jokes
away. Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy are more referenced than Dogma. And
this film features more gay blowjob jokes than you're likely to see ever!
In fact sometimes it seems like the whole film is just gay blowjob jokes and
references. With a few fart jokes thrown in to keep everything on course.
So if you like those, you're gonna have a great time.
Now to the performances. Since Jay speaks about 80% of the dialogue of this
film, he does a great job. Silent Bob is the usual expressions and random
outbursts, which all work fine. The best parts of this film are the
celebrity roles, which range from large to small cameos. I won't spoil the
surprise cameos which had the audience excited, but I'll speak of the ones
you probobly know already. Chris Rock is perfectly cast as the angry black
director of the film. Shannon Elizabeth has a larger role than I expected
and she is surprising good, and not just to the eye. Will Ferrell is
himself which is funny as hell. And the best scene of the movie involves
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. I won't spoil this scene for you, but it
brought the house down. Actors dissing each others past poor movie choices
features prominently throughout and is always good for laughs. Kevin Smith
attacks Hollywood here but individually takes jabs at Miramax, Paul Thomas
Anderson, and of course, himself.
So basically the film is a real good time with tons of jokes, gags, and
cameos designed to entertain. I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith so this movie
played to me like a gift for Kevin's fans. It won't be for everyone and
certainly does not hold back on the language and nasty humor, but it also
stays true to the spirit of Kevin Smith movies. It is a fitting closing to
tons of memorable characters which almost feels sad to see go...

Whatever happens, it'll be better than the shit that was Scary Movie 2.

But the big question is: Where does the monkey fit in?
-
Ill be there on opening day all day Im only want to see 3 more movies this year ; this spiderman and LOTR see ya there
-
Maybe the monkey fits in somehow with the end of "Mallrats" and the "Jay and Silent Bob" comic series. After all, 'Rats had J&SB walking down a road with "Suzanne", and the 4-issue comic (which I HIGHLY recommend) starts with their appearance in "Chasing Amy" and follows them on their quest for Shermer, Illinois up to the confrontation with the triplets in the parking lot of the abortion clinic in "Dogma". Either way, this is gonna be one hell of a film. I'm thinking "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"-type of stuff. That last part wasn't a joke, and some of you should know that. Now I leave this talkback, and let the flamers start flaming Kevin Smith for "selling out" by actually becoming successful, when he should toil in comparative obscurity like a good indie filmmaker is supposed to (sorry Richard Linklater, this is you).
-
What I forgot to finish yappin' about was that the ape show up in the comic series, tagging along with Jay and Bob for a short while. Nooch. Yankee Fuckin' Bluejeans.
-
It's either kissing ass or getting banned on this service, isn't it? Oh, well. I'll probably see this film, but I hold strong that KS has a directing trifecta: 1.) Gives Silent Bob the best lines and moments. 2.) Uses girls with big knockers and makes them feel like they're being strong-willed and clever ("I'm a MUSE, stupid!"). 3.) (like Chris Rock)Is funniest when he's just riffing on shit from his own life. I like him, really, and I'd hate for someone to label my own work in such a way as I've just labeled his. But he's a big time director and I'm an unemployed loser girl, so who laughs last? I'm guessing: not me.

"Chasing Amy" is K.S.'s worst film. Kevin Smith is a very funny man. "C.A." was not that funny of a movie, nor was it a fantastic story. Don't get me wrong, it was still better that most of the crap out there. I can't wait to see "J and SB". Didn't K.S. say at one point that he wasn't going to do a J and SB movie? I'm glad he changed his mind, and I hope he makes a lot of money with this movie so he can make more and more, bigger and better movies. I would like to see his take on a big budget action movie someday.

Your not under that Dumb Ass Eisners control with this film so there's no excuse. When you release J&SBSB on DVD make sure it's the Special Edition with all the trimmings not some half ass attempt to coddle the studio execs. Screw those bastards. Yeah, can't wait for AUG 24.
Nooch! P.S. Kevin , you're still my Buddy Christ. -
I rented 'Clerks' on a whim with my (now ex-) girlfriend many moons ago. I nearly shit myself laughing. She hated it, but then she always hated seeing me enjoy myself, hence her being ex. It is one of those films I own on DVD that gets lent to friends more often than any other, just so more people can enjoy it... I'll be honest, I skipped 'Mallrats' yet have every intention of watching it one day. I have no idea why I've not got round to it, to busy trying to give myself a blowjob I guess. 'Chasing Amy' was another film I watched with a girlfriend, this one appreciated the humour a lot more, although it was far tamer than in 'Clerks' so maybe that was why! Then 'Dogma' my word, funny and smart, Hollywood should pay attention. Only criticism I have is that I bought the DVD and now have to go and buy the fucking special edition... cheers! So what does this whole ponderous mess have to do with the price of cod I hear you ask. Nothing. Other than I'm a big KS fan and I'm looking forward to catching up with some old friends when this eventually gets released on this side of the pond (this side being the land of hope and glory!) So there, I'm just killing time now. Bollocks to it, I've had enough of work for one day. I'm off down the pub.

I'm glad to hear that MEWES is walking away with this pic. I'm a KSmith movie fan and I predict I will love this movie. But I've always been a little put-off by the way Mewes gets insulted for being a burnt-out pot-head. you know, the little thing in the thank-yous at the end of Dogma, where KS says look what clean living will do for you -- and the commentary tracks on the dvds, where Jay is criticized and heckled for being a fuckup. Well, guess what all you hypocrites, MEWES is the fuckin franchise baby! If it weren't for Jay, and if it weren't for POT, all you'd have would be a bunch of ironic post-everything poons, stranded somewhere between Tattooine and Dude Where's My Car. And if it weren't for pot, then Mallrats would just be a pretty funny movie, instead of what it is -- which is ONE OF THE MOST FULLY REALIZED HILAROUS MASTERPIECES OF THE 20TH CENTURY!! Kick ass!

Tell ya what, I have found myself waiting more anxiety for this movie than I have any of the summer blockbusters that have come out in the past.....9 years or so. Too bad I am getting older. I miss being excited about the thought of a summer movie with Ah-nold or Sly or whoever. Questions is will Hollywood keep up with me?
-
After drudging through the horrible black hole of suckitude
that has been the summer of 2001,
it is refreshing to know that at
last, a funny, inspiring film is
coming my way. The trailer(s)
speak for themselves. Not even
the cameo by the Scooby Doo gang
could fuck this up for me. Thank
you, Kevin Smith for saving this
summer and ending the Jersey Saga
with what is sure to be a hilarious, uplifting film that
will make huge bank at the box
office. Snootchie Bootchies. -
You know how you always hear about big stars being plagued by feelings of guilt re: their success? As if they're actually totally undeserving, but have somehow managed to fool everyone into thinking they've got talent? I hope Kevin Smith is kept up at night by such feelings. Because if not, he certainly should be.
-
I got to give Smith credit, he fooled Miramax in releasing his god awful movies for years but this will be the last because it will tank and the studio will give up on him. The man, although very nice, is a bad filmmaker, making references to the Brady Bunch, quoting lines from other movies and smokin weed does make dialogue. Soon, I pray, the end of the horrible "Ben Affleck really is a big star" years will come too. Smith is not funny and not too smart when it comes to directing and writing. Just my opinion.
-
Can't these two and their fans get along? is it wrong to like both?
-
I am anxious to see this movie. I am very anxious to see this movie. And I would also like to see Kevin Smith move away from this universe finally, because there are only so many movies you can make with the same character or characters before you start thinking to yourself, "Can't he do something else?"
But anyway....I am anxious to see "J&SBSB", mostly because I want to see how he ties all his characters together in one more movie for the fans. Imagine, the entire View Askew Universe in one movie! And because I think that Jay and Silent Bob are two of the best reoccuring characters in a series of movies I have ever seen.
To the guy who didn't like "Chasing Amy" -- it wasn't meant to be a laugh a minute movie like "Clerks" and "Mallrats" was. It was meant to be primarily a drama with a few laughs thrown into it. My favorite out of the 4 movies was "Chasing Amy" because of the raw emotion behind it -- any movie that can bring me close to tears because it hits home so thoroughly with me is a great movie, in my book. "Clerks" hit home with me, too, because I was working as a convienience store clerk at the time I saw the movie and I knew people like a lot of the customers that came into their store. And "Mallrats" (despite what the critics say) and "Dogma" (despite what the Catholics say) are just fun movies. So overall, Kevin Smith is an inspiration to me as a would be filmmaker. -
Pearl Harbor. I loved the part where Ben Affleck and Matt Damon go around trying to help everyone in the entire harbor all at once. I mean, the comic inspiration of them giving blood and immediately traveling out to the middle of the Harbor to cut out some drowning soldiers...pure genius. I laughed my ass off.

Kevin Smith runs on the opposite quality cycle as the Star Trek
by dirkbelig
You know how only the EVEN-numbered Trek flicks were any good (Khan, Whales, Undiscovered, First Contact) while the ODD-numbered (V'ger, Spock Hunting, Shatner's Gate, Insurrection) flicks blew the goat. Well, Kevin has done the OPPOSITE with his career. Listen up..."Clerks": Brilliant low humor, nuff said --- "Mallrats": Pure suckage. Even Kevin knows he blew this one. --- "Chasing Amy": His best. Joey was ROBBED of an Oscar nomination for this. Funny AND heartfelt. The only time Affleck hasn't totally Keanued. --- "Dogma": If it wasn't for the J&SB stuff, it would've been a total washout. Not every Catholic is suffering from it and it was so larded with, well...DOGMA, that it wasn't very ENTERTAINING. It certainly doesn't rate this new Ultra-Deee-Luxe DVD that just dropped. --- So, based on this pattern, "J&SBSB" should be quite fun. I'm hopeful.

I like Kevin Smith's movies because I relate to his cultural frame of reference. I don't see this happening really often, because, darn it, no one was born when I was born. There just aren't enough people out there our age to bother marketing to. I'm the only person I know who got the "Crush Groove" joke in "Dogma", and let me tell you, it was the damn funniest line in the whole movie.
-
lots of reasons, actually. but i feel i should. i mean, all the comic referances, movie references, etc. he's a fanboy. but i don't like fanboys. smith is a terrible director, which i think is a fairly obvious to anyone who has ever seen a movie of his. i really think he should work on that. i'd hate to see what other genres he could butcher without an eye for anything but medium shots. and i feel as if i'm coming across as cruel, but its not meant to be. maybe he just needs a better DP. i dunno. and his writing...hmmm....he's a clever writer, yes, but often suffers from the kevin williamson trap of too clever. i'd suggest reading john fante's ask the dust or anything by charles bukowski...or at least watch barfly. sometimes simplicity isn't a bad thing. but i think the primary reason kevin smith's name leaves my thoughts sour is his bashing of paul thomas anderson. and i'm not even a huge PTA fan, but i respect him as a filmmaker. and i like the themes he's dealt with in the past as far as characters are concerned and think his films are well shot in terms of texture, color, lighting and such, as well framing and camera movement. i think it would do smith some good to get more honest with his writing, stripping away the melodrama and such. but who am i to say? well, maybe some day you'll know. but i'd never tell you.

Hey I didn't get that Cwush Gwoove line in the Dogma, will you explain it to me TWASHGIRL? I heawd that Silent Bob is giving us GOOD WILL HUNTING 2 in this film, it should be a wiot!
