Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know, fuck Magnolia Fan. I love Magnolia, and I anticipate loving this film. But the retard was the first with the link, so he gets the glory... Priggy bastard... I hope to God he's kidding because this trailer rules like all hell. Sets up the premise and gives you a sense of scale for the mayhem and madness inherent to the film. I'm so stewing to see this sucker. I want to see it soon. And Magnolia Fan can just lick my stinky palm clean... prick...

Mr. Knowles,

I have just seen the disgusting piece of shit known as the JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK 2nd Internet Trailer. Fuck that Jay and Silent Bob schtick, it sucks. It sucks the short hairs. The Dillrod is in FULL EFFECT!!!

    by dillrod deluxe

This movie is going to ROCK for all of the right reasons! You naysayers and toilet sprayers beware - this movie is the ultimate proverbial middle finger to all of the self-obsessed pretense of Hollywood! It is going to be funny, feature babes, tell a story, make us laugh, play with our perceptions, and shed light on some heavy misconceptions. And it's going to do ALL of this, without even trying! Why? Because it's zen my friends! This movie's dillrod points WAY north! If you know the Boognish, you don't need a secret handshake. Snoogans, indeed... ;)

    by kill switch

I think I like the first teaser better but who gives a shit, this movie will have some good laughs for sure. And oh yeah, 'Magnolia' is still and always will be a brilliant movie, the best of 1999 in fact. Smith can poke his jabs at PTA, this movie already has a strong following of ardent fans and will weather any storm of backlash he may want to start. I guarantee you 20 years from now film-lovers will still be debating the merits of this ridiculous, bold, pretentious, innovate and absolutely unique movie. 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'? It'll have long been vanquished from memory and buried in dust on a shelf at your local Blockbuster. Have a nice day.

POSSIBLE HARD TRUTH THAT THIS GUY IS KEVIN SMITH

    by nizick

Okay, maybe not real hard truth, but remember on the Clerks DVD, on the film festival trailer where towards the end they had those "review quotes" from people who had seen the show. "Magnolia Fan" said "the movie sucks ass and the show ass sucks- truefilm.com" so i think that it probably was kevin creating some frustrated film webboard guy, because he gets humbled by bashing his own shit a lot. not real hard evidence but, a funny coincidence if it isnt kevin.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Don't get me wrong, Dogma, Clerks and even the much maligned Mallrats all had their moments, and there was a degree of fun to be had with all of those films, but moments is all they had, at least in my opinion, and moments don't make up a film. I'll check out Jay & Silent Bob, but unlike some of you rabid fans I won't be sucking the mans dick over this film beforehand, and even after I see the finished film, regardless of whether it's a fun piece of schlock (which is basically what I expect) or something far, far cooler and more memorable, it's going to have to be *at least* as much of a mini-classic as Chasing Amy before I start subscribing to this cult of personality that Mr Smith seems to have somehow crafted (or allowed to be created) for himself. I honestly do like the guy and think he does have a degree of talent, but until the man can learn to truly direct (apart from just "getting by" as he has done so far) then he aint no filmic God from where I'm sitting. Anyway, end of rant.

    F*** Kevin Smith

    by raindog98

Frankly, I think it's very retarded that this was reduced to a MAGNOLIA bashing is retarded.

A few comments: 1. Kevin Smith is a retard. He is funny, granted, but he knows nothing about making movies. Look at Dogma. He has no style or anything. And yes, his dialogue is good, but it's not real. It's so heavilly stylized that it's become cliche and obnoxious, since so many shitty indie filmmakers copy him. Jay and Silent Bob could be funny. Hell, it probably will. But it won't be any higher quality than BIG DADDY or THE ANIMAL.
    2. MAGNOLIA is a wonderful film. It's one of the best films of the 1990s and anyone who doesn't, I would go so far as to say is retarded and knows nothing about film. And if Kevin Smith doesn't like it? Well fuck him. That proves he knows nothing about movies.
    3. Harry is retarded. MAGNOLIA FAN is obviously Kevin Smith. Harry either doesn't get it or is retardly playing along with some stupid fucking joke.

Figgy - dead on, people are stupid.

Look, Kevin Smith is funny, and a good if not overly-versatile writer. Clerks, good. Green Arrow, very good. Chasing Amy, great. When he pissed all over Magnolia at the same as that shitpile Dogma came out - it just shows he is as artisticly self-absorbed and myopic as he accuses PTA of being. Sorry AICNers, Magnolia was amazing, and if you didn't get it, then the life you're living is either too short or just pathetic.

Magnolia is the most pretentious film ever

    by belvis

I don't understand why every single person who loves Magnolia so much accuses everyone who hated it of being "retarded" or just not "getting it". Couldn't it be possible that some people thought that Magnolia was a pretentious piece of masturbatory drivel? It's not like it was nuclear physics. It wasn't hard to "get" at all. It just sucked. The pseudo-intellectuals that assume that everyone that hated Magnolia is a moron, is obviously a self-egrandizing asshole. But hey, can't we all just get along?

    Piece of Smith

    by scudd

I can understand some folks not liking Kevin Smith or his films, but using his dialogue as an example just doesnt cut it for me. Since when do classic films rely on realism as a measurement of how good they are? Remember all of those classical musicals? Singing in the Rain? White Christmas? Summer Stock? Holiday Inn? The people broke out in song, for god's sake. In my slightly twisted opinion, realism doesnt equal quality. Its film. Its fiction. We make movies to show the things that we cannot in reality. If every film had dialogue and action that was tightly tied to our real, miserable world, the Cops franchise would replace Star Wars and the most successful film series in history. 'Nuff said.

I suppose Smith and company could have their website hosted by Disney, and possibly withstand the server load that an exclusive trailer release creates, but that wouldn't allow them the freedom to run things without control from the mouse. Do you expect someone to permanently have much more bandwidth than needed just so they're covered for an event that happens once every two years? Hell, if I recall, even the LOTR site was molasses immediately following the trailer release, but were you complaining about that? Under normal circumstances, all of the Askew related sites run just fine, so shut the fuck up! If the "film" company is so shitty, why were you interested in downloading the trailer in the first place?

    by jack d. ripper

Listen, I love Kevin Smith's movies, but this is just fucking childish. Yes, he does have a right to his opinion-so he didn't like Magnolia, so what? But this kind of juvenile, self-righteous gag is dumb. I loved "Magnolia" and I loved all of Kevin Smith's movies but it is PAINFULLY obvious who the better FILMMAKER is. Kevin Smith is a WRITER, first and foremost, like Woody Allen or David Mamet, except not as good. PTA is a FILMMAKER because he CAN write AND direct. Sure, Boogie Nights had long tracking Steadicam shots, reminiscent of Scorsese and Altman, but it was SUPPOSED to be just that-reminiscent. People get all pissed off when PTA wishes David Fincher ball cancer, a statement he later retracted, but Kevin Smith can act like this and it's fine because he's "one of us"? As much as I enjoy Smith's work it is getting a little...old. If he's really interested in making SERIOUS films(re-Chasing Amy)instead of in-jokey larfs for his fan club(re-Mallrats)he needs to let go of Jay and Silent Bob. They are HOLDING HIM BACK. Also, why would people pretend to like a film just to feel better than others? Do you truly believe that EVERYONE who loved Magnolia is some kind of pretentious, egotistical pseudo-cineaste who MUST be above everyone? Isn't it possible that A)you DIDN'T get it, B)even if you just didn't like it other people actually DID enjoy it or C)maybe you ARE too stupid to understand it. Note:I did say "maybe". Or maybe you just didn't like it, but that doesn't mean everyone who did like it is some kind of poseur. Also, there is, somewhere in the world, bound to be someone MORE sophisticated and more intelligent than you. Maybe some of these people even like...gasp! Magnolia! Anyway, I don't think Kevin should waste much more time with these two, lovable though they might be, because if he really wants to create a body of work that will stand the test of time, he should, nay, MUST leave them behind. That, and the Clerks cartoon ROCKS. "Why are we walking like this?"

Okay, to all you punks who think Kevin Smith has no style, listen up. Smith's style is his words. Okay, his scipt is his style. Hey, Desperado has a visual style. Hell, Battlefield Earth has some visual style to it. But do either of those movies have any WRITTEN STYLE! HELL NO!! Smith is a writer first, a director second. He probably doesn't know jack about cinematography, and you know what? that's fine by me. Oh, and Smith didn't sell out with Mallrats, Universal just screwed him over. Notice how Smith hasn't worked with them since. Oh, and Magnolia Fan is Kevin Smith.

    by hktelemacher

Why is Magnolia so overrated? Exactly what the fuck was wrong with it? It ran longer than most and it had a moderate pace, but will someone please give me a good reason why they think it failed? Everyone says, "oh, it was pretentious" Back that up. I know this isn't the Magnolia talkback but look at this shit. So many Magnolia bashers out there. What was wrong with it? And how does Mallrats compare? That and Clerks are for the most part meaningless, and hardcore Smith fans make them out to be something so much more. Chasing Amy and Dogma had more depth, but they were "issue" movies. PTA packs more of a layered punch into one of his sequences than Smith did in all four of his films. I like them both, but there's more directorial style in a sitcom than there is in a Smith film. His style is in his writing, but he can't manipulate the visual to save his life. I don't think PTA is just a showman, as the camera moves often reflect and deepen the scenario. Smith looks like he set the camera down and then jumped in front of it. There should be no debate about who the better filmmaker is, just compare each's sophomore effort. A forgettable teen comedy vs. Boogie Nights. And Universal didn't fuck up Mallrats. Has anybody read Smith's shooting script or seen the deleted scenes? A two-hour plus Mallrats would have hurt bad. I think Smith is funny, but it's weird that the Clerks animated shows were funnier than the flicks, especially the Bad News Bears/Temple of Doom episode on the DVD. The animated show had a good style, but Smith seems to be taking himself seriously, and I think you have to have serious material to do that. I don't wish anybody ball cancer, but if I had to pick between the two, I'd save PTA in a heartbeat. I might eat these words when his new Adam Sandler flick comes out, but he'll be making great movies for a long time.

    by cheesebiscuit

I thought Magnolia was okay. Not great, but entertaining. I have nothing wrong with it. It's just that people overrate it. I love Clerks because IT MAKES ME LAUGH! It's stupid, but it's funny! Actually, it's not that stupid. Some of it is, but most of it is filled with intelligence and dry wit. Mallrats is bad. There are funny parts, but everyone knows that it's bad, even KS. They should have NEVER done that whole "dating game show" thing. Chasing amy is hot damn hilarious apart from it being a moving and realistic look at modern romance. Dogma was funny, but a bit over the top and, most of all, too preachy. I loved the film, but comeon, how dumb was the shit-monster? Really? How dumb? I want to know. I have a ten year old cousin who wouldn't laugh at that. Well, maybe he would. I like directors for different reasons. I like David fincher because his films are brilliantly made (except Alien 3, of course). I like Spielberg because his movies are fun. I like Kubrick because he's damn weird. And I like Kevin Smith because he makes me laugh. No other reason.

    by waynesworld

the mallrats fan thing is soooooo simple.. kevin mentioned on the viewaskew.com talkback that he didn't dig magnolia.. fine, everyone has his opinion... i happen to love magnolia for what it was. Flawed, imperfect, but chock full of the sheer audacity of a gifted filmmaker to go for something huge and something small and personal at the same time... it thought it worked... and that's the same reason i love kevin smith movies.. flawed, imperfect.. but from the heart and funny and unaffected and smart and knowing and cool... anyway, back to kevin.. so he (perhaps unwisely) makes his post.. and gets pounded and pounded and pounded on his site by PTA fans who can't believe he would say what he felt.... SOOOOO... kevin's signing this trashy internet posting of a J&SB comic book as a piece of shite and signing in magnolia fan is a JOKE!!!!! Get it????!!! Jeez.....

All this talk about pretentious, overrated artsy flicks and no o

    by deargodmyspleen

What really pissed me off about THAT self-important piece of shit is that it looked and feeled like a movie with an important message, but in fact it was a hollow, cliched mess that had absolutely no application to real people. Dogma at least tackled the very real problem of people locking themselves into a belief system to the point of forgetting why they're spiritual in the first place. Plus it opened our eyes to the issue of flatulence during anal sex.

    by waynesworld

hmmm.. i mistakenly inserted mallrats in the first sentence above when i obviously intended to say magnolia... but then i started thinking.. both have eight letters... both start with m... both films by writer/directors.. sounds like a lincoln/kennedy series of coincidences... either that or i'm an idiot...

on further review.. it's more than likely the latter...

    Fight Club

    by rustle leengo

Jay and Silent Bob Rock. Definitely my favorite characters from the Kevin Smith universe. I also love Magnolia. My favorite film of '99. Yet on the subject of director bashing it might be interesting to point out that Kevin's not the only one playing this game. Paul Anderson has said in interviews how much he hates Fight Club, and the movies of David Fincher. With all the crappy movies being made it's too bad that the one's making great movies seem to like ripping on each other. Aren't there more deserving targets in hollywood.

Re:Scudd - the haters of LOTR

    by entilzha proph

I wasn't talking about the movie, I was talking about the original books (You do of course realize that they were books first, right :D ) LOTR, the books, have really been one of those things people either love or hate (actually, much like star wars, and arguably, Kevin Smith), espcially in critic circles. For a long time, many critics just bashed it to death. It has gained more acceptance since then, but its still in the situation of love or hate. BTW, I thought Dogma was the best to date, although thats probably because I like issue films, and don't like the idea of the salt of the earth not being their own determiners. In any case, getting back to my original question - what exactly didn't KS like about Magnolia, and why, and what was the plot BTW?

    Why people don't get MAGNOLIA

    by raindog98

People don't get magnolia because most people just aren't fucking deep enough. They think that watching a fuck-load of movies means that they know movies... but that's just not true. A lot of you geeks aren't any better than the fuckers that flock to Pearl harbor... you just aren't "socially accepted" (although you could be, if you tried) You don't like what MAINSTREAM society tells you to, you like what INDIE society tells you. And you geeks write off wonderful films like MAGNOLIA as pretentious and artsy, when it in truth, operates on a level so beyond most of you, that it's not even worth your time. Kevin Smith's attacking of the genius PTA is just a result of him trying to cope with his own mediocratey.

And whoever fucking video-boy was earlier who said something about the people who rent it from blockbuster not getting it... that's not a fucking argument!! You say that as though it matters! These are the same people who you pick on for going to Pearl harbor. Of course they won't like Magnolia! They probably wouldn't like a good Kevin Smith film!

And about Chasing Amy: A good film, yes. It could have been much better. It has neat parts to it, but a lot of spots that should have been fixed. A real director would have caught it. I would have liked to see Todd Scholantz do a Chasing Amy film... gaurantee ya it would have been funnier, more moving and darker. But then again, Todd Scholantz wouldn't waste his time with a "I Love a Lesbian" story-line.

Clerks was his best, but really only because it was this tight little pill of funny-stuff. Mallrats was bad, but highly fun. Dogma was pretentious horsehit.

    Fucks to you,

I for one am very thankful I don't have a clue as to who you are. If being pretentious means we are intimidated by you, and you claim Dogma to be pretentious, does that mean you're intimidated by Kevin Smith and the movie? Kevin never attacked the genius as you refer to him. He simply stated that he didn't enjoy Magnolia, but loved Sydney and Boogie Nights. He's attacking morons like you who place PTA on a shrine like he's the second coming. You're probably right about Todd Solondz not wanting to do a lesbian love flick. He'd rather put Welcome to the Dollhouse in a new setting with Dawson, and call it a new movie.

    Kevin Smith's Repressed Anger

    by accordion king

Don't get me wrong, I love Smith's films, but they're pure popcorn entertainment and he should be more comfortable with that. How he could even BEGIN to compare himself with PT Anderson is beyond me. It like comparing "Rad" with "The Bicycle Theif". Pointless. He should just accept who he is, quit trying to please everybody and roll around in his money some more. By the way, I can't wait until PTA fingerbangs Smith with his upcoming comedy. Its the ultimate comeback. Rather than piddling around on the internet like us losers, he just decided to go out and make a comedy better than Kevin Smith. Good form.

I thought I was the only one who remembers the movie "Rad". I was beginning to feel that it was one of those parallel universe movies that was only seen once by one person, and never to be seen again by anyone, ever. When I tell people about this movie, they walk away quickly, probably wondering which way they will run if I come after them. Thank you for validating my sanity.

I wonder if in J&SBSB "Magnolia Fan" is the same one who said "I could shit a better show" about The Clerks Animated Series. Just kidding. But seriously I wonder if PTA will make fun of Kevin or any of his characters in his new comedy starring Adam Sandler, it seems that Kevin has mocked him enough, lets see if PTA will respond.

I may have driven from Texas to New Jersey just to see Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, but I am fucking devoted to Magnolia. Every time I see it, it reminds me of why I love movies so much in the first place... And Kevin Smith isn't making fun of Magnolia any more, he was making fun of the assholes who insulted him for not liking Magnolia. The parody is of the self-righteous jerks who think it made him less of a person and a film fan in general because he loathed it.

Smith is not making fun of PTA for God's sake!

    by boxman

All Kevin Smith did was state on his own website when asked that he did not like 'Magnolia'. Suddenly these talk backs are in an uproar and help to fuel news when there wasn't any. Hell, it even reached the pages of Entertainment Weekly. Smith stated he loves 'Boogie Night's but just didn't care for the latest PTA offering. This is no fued. There is no East Coast West Coast thing developing between Kevin Smith and PTA. They even met while both were getting doctors checkups before going off to film their next projects, shook hands, and there was nothing between them. Smith is just poking fun at the internet's swirl and influence, and lending a nod to what happened to him before. It's not a jab at 'Magnolia', it's a jab at the circus that flew when Smith just said he didn't like it. And I love both PTA's films and Smith's, so it is possible to have a happy marriage.

I get that whoever MagnoliaFan is, he's probably someone who is sympathetic to the upcoming movie (yes, I watched the trailer), but why does it have to be Kevin Smith? (Not that it matters.) by spoons

What the hell do you mean "He says it in the trailer?" You've made it pretty clear that you didn't actually watch the thing, because Kevin Smith doesn't say anything in the trailer. He rarely does (that's why the character's called SILENT Bob). For those of you who actually watched the trailer and know what you're talking about, though, I'm still curious. Even if Kevin Smith had spoken the lines "I am MagnoliaFan" in the trailer (which wouldn't make any sense), why would that mean that the otherwise anonymous internet geek who wrote to Harry is the real Kevin Smith? Anyway, I'm not saying that it WASN'T Kevin Smith. Hell, I figure there's a pretty good chance it was, and I think it's a pretty good joke. I'm just wondering why so many of you are so certain that it's Kevin Smith's joke rather than someone else's--like for instance, Harry's. I'm not arguing, I'm ASKING.

Kevin Smith is a great dialogue writer.

    by superninja

He's just funny as hell and is great with pop-culture references. Dogma was TERRIBLY directed. I read his script and laughed my ass off, but Smith couldn't bring in the action punch it needed towards the end. Overall, I still liked the film because I thought it was clever, but he can't articulate action in comics, either. Daredevil and his current Green Arrow run are static panels with oodles of dialogue placed over them. Almost like a Sunday comic strip. And Magnolia was my favorite film of 99.
