Benjamin Lesbian goes over JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK
Meow... tsk tsk.... Meow... Sorry folks, Harry here, just communcating with a lusted one in the native sandy tongue of her beloved Skyscrapered town... hiss hiss... Anyways, I was filling her in on the interesting review below by Benjamin Lesbian, who seems to have really dug the film, but felt that the movie could use some tightening here and there... And since Kevin Smith told the audience he planned on clipping an additional dime out of the film... well, seems like we'll be left with some high grade stuff when he's done... There are some spoilers, but not too many... and well.... enjoy.... Meeeeow meOOOWWW...
= = = = = = = = = = =
If you're going to go out, go out with a bang. If
Kevin Smith wants to get all of the silliness of
dick and fart jokes, pop culture references and
the connections of the Askewnaverse behind him so
he can become a more mature filmmaking, he sure
found a way to exorcise his demons. Jay & Silent
Bob Strike Back featured more dick/fart/blow
job/homosexual jokes per capita than any one of
his previous films. It also has the most
references (both self-referential and pop
culture-related) of any film. Some were funny,
like Affleck and Damon bitching about all the
crappy movies they have made and how they are
obligated to pay back a filmmaker who gave them
their start (wink, wink). Other ones were pretty
hammy and predictable, like the Scooby-Doo
parody.
It was also felt odd that they referred to the
films from within their own Askewniverse, such as
when Damon bitched to Affleck about how he forced
him into appearing in Dogma. Mallrats is even
mentioned as film. Maybe I'm reading into this
too much, but it still stuck out. While
everything was plenty funny, it also felt as
though Kevin took all the most crowd-pleasing
aspects of his film (vulgar humor, references,
catchphrases and Jay/Silent Bob) and subtracted
the realistic dialogue and storylines from the
other films. Well, maybe not Mallrats, which had
that Hughesian charm that Kevin wanted it too.
Maybe that's why I felt J&SBSB is more akin to
Mallrats than any other film in the series. Like
my brother-in-law said when the flick was over,
"it was like a typical Kevin Smith film, just not
as cerebral." Not that there's anything wrong
with that. I really liked it and felt that the
flick was Kevin Smith's version of a mindless
comedy/parody, a la Scary Movie/Airplane, just
like the Clerks cartoon series was his version of
The Simpsons and Mallrats was his version of
Sixteen Candles or Pretty in Pink.
Anyway, like Kevin had said, the people giving
out the passes weren't telling people what the
film was that was being screened. However, if you
were a crafty person - such as myself - you had
heard that Viewaskew/Miramax was going to be
running a test screening of the flick in the area
and happened to be in the right place at the
right time, you could get a pass to the flick. Lo
and behold, as I was leaving my summer school
class on Monday, a woman was standing outside my
class building asking people if the wanted to see
"a movie." If you said yes, she showed you a
small card with a list of films on it such as
American Pie, There's Something About Mary, Road
Trip, Scary Movie and Dogma. If you liked those
types of movies and wanted to go to the
screening, you got a pass and were told to go to
the Arizona Mills Mall on Wednesday at 6:30pm.
The pass said they were looking for people aged
17 to 34.
So as Kevin said, it was sort of a "cold
screening," where people did not know what movie
they were seeing, but they apparently knew who
their audience was going to be and tried to get
as many of them as possible. When we got to the
theatre, we waited in line and were given
another small card asking us if we connected to
the media and if we posted info on movies on the
Internet. I of course said no. There was a small
disclaimer saying we couldn't reveal any info on
the movie, but we didn't have to sign it, which I
didn't. Once inside, we were kept waiting while
they tried to fill as many seats as possible.
Based on the list of films they asked us about,
people were thinking we were seeing Scary Movie
2, but I held on to my faith. After they
announced the film and the screams went up, some
people were clueless about the film and said
things like, "Jay and Silent Who?"
The temp-credits that they said were tacked onto
the film consisted of "View Askew Productions
Presents" in the same font used on the Internet
trailer and then the Empire-esque logo we've seen
on the website and such. While I'm sure this will
make it into the final cut (as it was
CGI-rendered), there might be some last-minute
objection by Lucasfilm or something.
Sighting of Viewaskew Regular: John Willyung
(Kevin's cousin/Cohee Lundin in Chasing
Amy/Dante's killer in Clerks) plays a rude Quick
Stop store patron in the 70's flashback.
The opening scene in present day with Dante and
Randall behind the counter still was funny, but
the interaction between the two seemed threadbare
it felt had seen and heard their jokes before in
both Clerks and the cartoon series. It's also odd
that there is no mention in the flick of the
events in Dogma, save for when Jay refers to God
as a 'she.' It's almost as if the flick never
happened. Alanis Morrisette/God is also nowhere
to be found in the flick. She must have been cut
out as she is listed on the IMDB. Also MIA is
Judd Nelson and Adam Corrola.
Sighting of Viewaskew Regular #2: Ernie O'Donnell
(Rick Derris in Clerks) plays the cop who hauls
Jay and Silent Bob away for dealing in front of
the store.
When we see Brodie in his new Secret Stash, he
also uses his well-worn catchphrase that's seen
in the trailer and after six years, is still
wearing the same outfit. For the temp sound mix
for this version of the film, there were a few
placeholder songs from other Viewaskew films,
such as using Sponge's Seventeen from Mallrats
for Brodie's scene in the Stash. In the next
where, Jay & Silent Bob meet Holden, the opening
song from Chasing Amy plays. The score that's
used in the trailer was used at several points
throughout the film, particularly in the action
scenes. I'm assuming that these will all be
replaced with the actual score and soundtrack.
Probably, the only song that was used in this
temp sound mix that will probably make it into
the final cut is Prince's The Most Beautiful Girl
in the World, which was used when we see Shannon
Elizabeth.
The film was 102 minutes long and Kevin said he
will be chopping off 10 more minutes, and boy was
it needed in some parts. At the end of Brodie's
appearance, him and Jay do some kind of weird
air-guitar type pantomime. There are also dead
parts in the middle, such as when Marshall
Willoughby does the "hard target search" speech
from the Fugitive (one of many parts involving
the character which drag down the film). Speaking
of that film, there are also several other
references to that, as well the requisite Star
Wars mention, where Jay and Silent Bob engage in
a lightsabre duel with Mark Hamill (using a
double-bladed bongsabre of all things).
I can't wait to see what the final version looks
like!

Kevin Smith...he who makes the thinking man's adam sandler movie
by cedric cannon
let me by the first to say that kevin smith is not that good a director. which is OK. he doesn't claim to be Yahoo Serious.its his writing that's always showered with superlatives....but IMHO i think that's insanely overrated. i mean, he goes by the same absurd out of nowhere comedy that adam sandler does. just one gag after another thats kinda pointless. and i fear that this flick is gonna be overloaded with gags judging from its kinda weak plot(that bluantman movie, the one trying to be stopped, is not unlike pee wee's big adventure). and i can already tell that mark hamill's character is just a measley gag. something that really doesn't add texture to the story. its just there to be painfully hip("look ma! i got luke skywalker doing some twisted shit!")...and i'm not really badmouthing him. its just that i can't understand that adam sandler movies get trashed and kevin smith's films are soaked in praise. they're the same! stock characters(jay and silent bob...that "you can dooo ett dude"). and it seems that little nickey and dogma are cousins. just one that pretends that its being sharp satire while the other is just nothing but fun....i don't normally dislike kevin smith flicks(like anyone cares). the funeral scene in clerks was really funny, and hooper x(hopper?)decrying racsim in star wars was immensley entertaining. gak. i better stop writing. but again Kevin Smith flicks=adam sandler with a theasuras(sp).

Cedric, How can you compare Dogma with Little Nicky? Smith's humor may be immature at times but it's not stupid and there is a difference. Immature humor can be very smart, childish on occasion but intelligent. Smith's films to me are what would happen if Dennis Miller and Quentin Tarantino wrote a script when they were in a goofy mood. Sandler films are what any group of stoned teenager could write. I do think Sandlers films are entertaining on that level but the dialogue in one of his films doesn't come anywhere close to any of Smith's films.
There are many levels of immature films and Sandler is at the same level as Scary Movie and American Pie but way below Orgazmo, Kingpin, the South Park movie and of course anything Smith has done. -
Good luck, buddy! I hope it's a huge hit for ya!

Well, fella... let's check KS's filmography. "Clerks": well written, so-so directed... but extremly cheap. "Mallrats": still learning and having a good time. "Chasing Amy": a masterpiece, critics worldwide saluted Kevin as a new Woody Allen: deep, mature and with a powerful directing (see the sequence when Ben Affleck tell Joey Lauren Addams that he loves her, in the car under a heavy rain... is a classic). "Dogma": funny stuff, not very well directed, but with a nice screenplay (you may not like it). The fact KS has been so long attached to New Jersey flicks... well, he's just starting, he had a hit and it could have been wrong to go quick into another kind of stuff... flicks 1 and 3 (clerks and Amy) are classics. Flicks 2 and 4 are funny failures. I trust Kevin, and I am highly interested in what he would do now that the Jersey series are over (or so he has said).
-
Coop buddy how can you put Kingpin up there as a higher form of comedy? Sandler could have starred in that one. Besides that big guy I agree to a point. I still say Billy Madison is a classic piece of comedy. It speaks to the juvenile that we should all try to keep alive. I can't remember that guys name (the one who compared Dogma with Little Nicky), but there is NO comparison between Little Nicky and Dogma except both involved heaven and hell. As much as I like Sandler, there is no excuse for that movie, it was a big piece of crapola. Whether you like Smith or not, you have to admit that he has a skill for writing conversation, especially with regard to pop culture. That's my two cents anyway. Peace out

>> "A woman was standing outside my class building asking people if the wanted to see a movie. If you said yes, she showed you a small card with a list of films on it such as American Pie, There's Something About Mary, Road Trip, Scary Movie and Dogma." What a bizarre list of films. The first four, ok, then Dogma? I'd immediately guess that I was about to see the new Kevin Smith flick. While I think Dogma was a big failure for the most part, it did have some cerebral intentions, and was just much more original a film. I would imagine those first four films being on Joe Teenager's list of favorite flicks, and then, "Dog-what?" PS Harry, the fact that you mention you have some sort of girlywhirly at the beginning of any and every post, even on other people's reviews and such, is just embarrassing. No offense, but that's the sort of thing I'd have done if I'd had a girlfriend at age 14.

Ther Trailer is slated to be attached to Scary Movie 2. Hope it's a bit Funnier than the On-line Trailer. Still and all, I'm looking forward to this K.S. Production. As a frequent visiter to the Secret Stash in Red Bank, I look forward to being able to Meet Kevin in Person someday if anything just to say thanks.
Kevin, I'm sure you read the Talk Backs so I'll just say, I'm looking very much forward to your first Non-Jersey film. Or First screenplay for a non-smith movie.
You sir are a screenwriting GENIUS! -

But not the last view askew. They are working on a new pick called Vulger. Its about a clown who does adult entertainment. It stars the guy who played the clerk in Clerks (I forget his name). I can't wait for this film. Jay and Silent Bob rule.

i will be disappointed if john bender doesn't make the final cut.

i'd just like to remind everyone that Dogma is terrible.
-
Well, Vulgar has been done for quite some time, it was shown at the Toronto film festival, and subsequently picked up by LionsGate films (same who ended up with Dogma when Disney washed their hands of it) it should be out sometime soon hopefully since it's actually on film...

happy gilmore aside, adam sandler blows goats.to mention him in the same sentence with k.s.is re god damn diculous!
-
I see what you're saying coop, and i didn't say that sandler's flicks had sharp dialouge...thats why i said that kevin smith films are basically adam sandler movies. just with a theusaris. BUT i just watched Chasing Amy again..and i kinda want to forget that i ever compared kevin smith to adam sandler. then i remember how a friend of mine(who adores adam sandler flicks)practically made me watch Dogma. and he only raves about the shit demon scene(OK OKOK...two words on why you should see Dogma, dude: "shit" "demon"..i cannot say that enough. "shit" "demon"). c'mon...i don't care if Kevin Smith's vocab skills are mensa-level, that was a really REALLY stupid scene that i know would be just as comfortable in any adam sandler flick.....and its sad, that i think that the funniest part in Dogma was when Ben Affleck bitch-slapped Salma Hayak. One last thing that makes kevin smith/adam sandler flicks similar. you can play "SPOT THE BOOM MIKE!" in both of their films. and that is that

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/movies/review97/chasingamybrace.htm
I believe that review sums up the critical impressions that I have of KS's body of work.
His greatest appeal, and biggest weakness is pandering solely to fanboys and geeks. Once he sets out to make films that have a wider audience, then we'll see what kind of real filmmaker he is. -
Adam Sandler movies (as well as all Happy Madison productions) are classic juvinile humor, and nothing more. They offer great gags, in jokes (Rob Shneider as the "You can do it" guy) and some funny dialog, but that is all. The greatest happy madison production was Duece Bigalow: Male Gigalo because it was so shameless in its fart joke style of humor. Kevin Smith films have plenty of immature jokes, but actually offer something beyond that. Chasing Amy was a movie you could walk away from and be able to think afterwards, Dogma caused hell of media hype and religious controversy. The entire dialog in Mallrats about Superman not being able to have sex is the funniest dialog I have ever heard. Anyone who puts Sandler flicks in the same catagory as Kevin Smith movies is on some kind of alien crack.
-
more references by harry alluding to him fucking household pets. This is getting disgusting and ridiculous. Which i guess pretty much sums up sex with harry.
-
I was actually pondering on whether or not to add Kingpin to that list but I actually do think it's one of the Farelly brothers better films. Of course everyone has their own opinions (just like some of the people on here that actually think Dogma sucked while I think Mallrats was the dog) so I will leave it on my list. Responding to Cedric, I wasn't comparing Smith to Dennis Miller because of his vocabulary (that's a strange assumption since I don't think of Smith as having a large vocabulary), I was referring to the way he references everything in pop culture. So with that clear I guess that means you agree with me now. thanks.
-
See, I've got this whole kitten thing figured out. The more talkbackers bitch about Harry's interminable kitten references, the more Harry is likely to make them. It's an evil cycle. On one hand, we've got a lot of geeks here desperate for companionship and livid that Harry has something they don't. On the other hand, we've got Harry looking like the proverbial geek who, upon getting some, has to announce to the world "I GOT SOME!" In the middle of it all are those of us who are interested in film, who brave the infantile flak to garner a nugget now and then. And I don't think "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" will count as a nugget. There is a limit to self-referential humor, and Kevin Smith has found it.
-
i guess its plausable to misintrepret your first post :)
-
I want more details on the guest appearance of Mavel's Daredevil! So far we've only got one reference to him. Give me details! Did he look cool? Was he actually playing Matt Murdock or was he a guy just dressed up a DD?
Kevin's run on DD was great. I'm sure he'd know how to do him right. -
DOGMA WAS SO BAD, THERE'S NO WAY I'M GOING TO SIT THROUGH THIS.
-
How about hitting the caps button? Wanker.
-
KINGPIN is far and away the best Farrelly Brothers movie. It has so much heart! I didn't care about those two poons in Dumb and Dumber the way I cared about Roy and Ishmael in Kingpin. With the Mary movie, the Farrellys gave in to test-audience hell, and something about Mary just doesn't feel right. MM&Irene feels cut all to pieces based on tester cards from many critical audiences. And Outside Providence sucked even more than Dogma. Maybe Kingpin just survived the test audience treatment better than any other Farrelly movie to date.
-
Man, Harry, when she dumps you, you're gonna fall hard.
-
If this one is as good as Mallrats I'm there. Ok, so its the stupidest one of the the Kevin Smith flicks- so what?! BTW, I just rented the CLERKS - UNCENSORED tape (no DVD player for me) and I'm actually enjoying the episodes alot more then when I saw the 2 on TV. Worth a second look, I do recomend. . .
