First Look At ICE AGE and ONE HOUR PHOTO!!!

Published at:  Jun 02, 2001 10:21:28 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with images, courtesy of Empire Magazine, of two FOX films that I have a serious eye on... The first is ICE AGE... the first of (hopefully) an ongoing animated division of FOX ANIMATION that is handling the CGI animated films for FOX... Problem is this... The division was sort of kickstarted by Bill Mechanic... though he's gone from FOX now... there is hopefully the same fervor for Animation that was once there... though the dissolution of the 2D animated department doesn't give me a great deal of hope... There's an additional 3 photos from ICE AGE at the link below

Then we have the incredibly talented Mark Romanek and his first feature film project called ONE HOUR PHOTO starring Robin Williams. This is a difficult and different project... not your typical Robin Williams film at all... Anyone familiar with Romanek's work knows why they should be curious to see this... his first feature film... and he wrote it as well... Based around the concept of a man that works at a One Hour Photo stand that becomes obsessed with one suburban family in particular through the developing of their photos.... Could be scary creepy voyeuristic unnervingly weird behavior stuff.... I'm anxious to see what Romanek comes up with... Dig Robin's look though....

Wow. Robin Williams looks really creepy in this movie. It's probably going to be another 'Hand that Rocks the Cradle' though.

Damn, Robin Williams looks creepy as hell with that look. He is probably one of the best actors aroud, and I don't think he gets alot of credit from dumb fan-boys. The man's got alot of heart and you know it. I just wonder who the mom of the "Suburban family" is. Maybe we'll get sme dirty pics of Michelle Pfieffer and not those bogus ones on those porn sites.....not that I've ever seen them. Really, I don't look at porn. uuhhhhh bye

    by drive! kowalski

it *is* a perfect film. I saw it when I was 9 years old, layed up with a bug, off school. I missed two weeks of school, but I saw "Rear Window" on TV on my first day of infirmity. Amazing. I sneaked out to the video store with a long coat over my P.J's every morning for the first week, renting all the Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart movies I could find. The second week was devoted to new discovery Cary Grant. My beautifull sister paid the Video store bill without comment. She always did like Cary Grant

The Williams film seems to have taken a cue from RED DRAGON. Francis "The Tooth Fairy" Dolarhyde picked his victims from the film he developed. Similarities or no, ONE HOUR PHOTO could be an interesting flick.

IF this is the first feature film being animated by Chris Wedge and Blue Sky studios for Fox (and last I heard on AICN it was), then all you doubters will be excrutiatingly embarrassed when you see animation that easily rivals Pixar and puts some of ILM's character stuff to shame. Haven't any of you seen "Bunny"?

Mark Romaneck is the greatest video director ever!

    by dobbs, r

One Hour Photo is going to kick so much ass. Between his work with NIN, Lenny Kravitz and Janet Jackson, his video's are the best Mtv has ever seen (except for Fincher's video for Madonna's "Bad Girl" featuring Christopher Walken as her guardian angel). Of the whole video director-turned film director class, he encompasses the best of Fincher, Sena, and Bay with an eye for detail and narrative that beats them all. Ok, i'm done kissing the man's ass. This movie is gonna rock. I can't believe it's taken this long for him to have his own movie.

    by tommy5tone

he did a low-budget bizarro indie called 'static' back in the late '80s. kinda like 'pi', if i'm on the right track. looking forward to 'one hour photo' - with this, 'insomnia' and 'death to smoochy', hope robin williams gets back on track.

  • Apart from that here's hoping that this film, whether good or bad, at least leads Robins back towards some real acting roles (which he is actually very good at) and far, far away from all those goofy "big kid" Robin Williams roles, which have been severely tired and worn out since the early nineties (at least). More quality, less goofery and Robin Williams could have a career worth following again. Here's hoping.

That woman from Connie Nielson. This move has definite potential. And Spike Jonze is the best music video director ever. As least for my taste. And that last comment was just fucking stupid. What a poor way to call Harry a pervert... And what an unmotivated attack. You can say that Harry lacks Grammar skills, but saying he fantasizes about little boys is just uncalled for.

    by prankster

...After seeing "Shrek", with its' disappointingly stiff and sterile and unimaginative designs, I was afraid that only Pixar was able to create appealling 3D characters. But I really like these shots, they show the kind of loopy inventiveness that makes an animated film worth looking at.

The first time I heard "One Hour Photo"'s plot, I looked around with a confused look on my face, then I reread "Dragon", then my confused look came back(... with a VENGEANCE! Summer '02). I mean, that's a pretty major hinge of the book, y'know? And they just ripped it clean outta the book for this Robin Williams flick. I'm sorry, but I find pointless plagiarism of damned good literature to be- WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!- Wah! Who said that??-SHUT UP! I ASKED YOU A QUESTION! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?-Oh! Um... I... uh... what do you mean?- YOU'RE GOING INTO A FUCKING LECTURE!-Huh? I... no!- SHUT UP, CUNT FACE! NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR FUCKING BULLSHIT! THEY JUST WANT YOU TO MAKE WITH THE YUK YUK!!-...Um... 'yuk yuk'?- SILENCE, CUNT FACE! I'VE NEVER SEEN A TALKBACKER AS ANNOYING AND IRRELEVANT AS YOU. NOW STOP THE LECTURE AND MAKE A JOKE!- i... it's too early...yoohoo hangover...-A JOKE! NOW, CUNTFACE!- umm... okay... um.... i... uh... um.... knock knock?- NO!!!!! YOU FOOL! DO YOU THINK YOU'RE HUMOROUS?! ARE YOU TRYING TO SHOW OFF FOR YOUR LITTLE BUDDY?! ANSWER ME, YOU LITTLE BASTARD!.... little buddy? the hell, are you gilligan or something?- YOU DARE COMPARE ME TO BOB DENVER?!? I SAY TO YOU, I SHALL RIP THIS 'HARRY' TO SHREDS AND SHOVE THE PIECES RIGHT IN YOUR HARELIP FACE!... um... i don't have a harelip- I'M BEING RHETORICAL, YOU PLEBIAN!! I SHALL KILL THIS 'HARRY', AND WHEN I'M DONE HANGING YOU, MORIARITY, AND THAT GUY FROM 'UPCOMINGMOVIES.COM' WITH HIS NO-DOUBT UNUSUALLY LARGE INTESTINE, I SHALL TAKE OVER THIS SITE, CALL IT 'AINT IT DRAGON NEWS', AND RULE THE TALKBACKS WITH AN IRON FIST! THEN I SHALL WRITE SOLELY ABOUT MICHAEL BAY AND JOEL SHUMACHER! AND-Hey, you know what? This isn't working.- WHAT?! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, CUNT FACE?!- Well, c'mon. This isn't even on-topic. I mean, how many people here have even read the book? Sometimes I wonder if many of these people can even read.- HEY! I DON'T NEED TO TAKE THIS FROM YOU! YOU'RE NOT MY MUHNER!-You know what? You're getting old. Go away.-....UM... OKAY.(poof!)- Hey, that was easy. This has been a Moment with User ID Indeed! Hmm... watercolor's a little stale. Check the date on that watercolor.

    Romanek... and other things

    by brendon

I am so pleased that you are all looking forward to the new Romaek movie. I was fearing it was going to die on it's ass. Static was a great find, a true gem. The video acrredited to Fincher above is Bad Girl, and it was by Tim Burton of all people. Fincher made us suffer with, amongst others, the vogue video, so I can see how some people might get confused. Romanek's videos for Scream, Bedtime Stories, Got til it's gone, Devil's Haircut... (I could go on) are great. He brought more content, style, wit and craft to the field than any other... even Michel Gondry. I can't wait to see 1 hr photo as soon as possible... I'm getting to California in the next week, and it would be a dream for a screening to come my way......

    Romanek and Static

    by magnoliaman

Besides the guy above me, nobody has mentioned "Static." Why? It has a classic Amanda Plummer performance, and it co-stars/is co-written by the great Keith Gordon. He was involved with 2 of the great mid-80s films that nobody saw: Static and The Chocolate War. Both are very good and feature many interesting cinematic ideas, as well as a lot of Kubrick-esque pacing and style. I don't watch music videos but I've been waiting forever for Romanek to do another movie. Sounds like that guy has wasted his life doing great work in a hideous medium.

    Mark Romanek wrote to me!

    by we span time

Yup, ever since I can remember, I've had a fascination with Romanek's distinct visual style. I actually wrote to him once and he was a very nice guy and responded by sending me a reel of his work, a nice lengthy letter, as well as a taping of a lecture he did at a san francisco art school. And guess what the letter revealed? His favorite movie is none other than 2001: A Space Odyssey. The man actually opened me up to the underground world of cinema I hadn't previously known about. Keep in mind I wrote to him when I was in middle school, I had never really known that Andy Warhol, as well as a bunch of other guys I can't remember the names of, made cool avante-guard films. I hadn't even heard of Fellini before he wrote to me either. Well, Mr. Romanek's definitely had an impact on me and I must thank him for it. What a cool guy.
Anyways, now onto ADD subjects that have little or nothing to do with anything. If you have any interest in good music, BUY THE NEW AIR RECORD!!! It's sooo fucking awesome it's beyond description. Guaranteed melodic orgasms. Ok, I'm sure that now that I have an account here, I'll be writing often. Right. I'm off to go play with my 300th edition Boba Fett! Bye.

    Kubrick References...

    by we span time

If anyone cares, you can usually find a kubrick reference of two in Romanek's videos. If anyone has seen his Macy Gray clip for "Do something" you'll notice that amidst futuristic bubble-like landscape he's createdm, there's a shot of some kids running uphill and there's a sign in the bottom right hand of the screen. What does it say? None other than "home." Sound familiar to anyone? Aside from that, the whole frigid, garden-maze setting in Nine Inch Nail's "Perfect Drug." Not only does he pay homage to Kubrick, he does so for other movie gods as well. If anyone has seen his clip for Beck's
"Devil's Haircut," you'll notice his "zoom-in-on-the-freeze-frame" technique that's quite remeniscent of Francois Truffauts's "400 Blows." I happen to know that he and Beck met and decided to utilize this technique for the video. Just some "I have too much time" info for you. Ok. That's enough for now.

red dragon/tarzem ripped off romanek/fisher king

    by xlogik909

First off...its so good to see harry share his enthusiasm for mark romanek's upcoming one hour photo. ever since EW's 2001 film preview, this has made my top 3 films to see list. Williams is one of my fave actors, and can turn very brillaint and visionary roles(toys is one of my fave films) just look at 'the fisher king' to see how '3am' willaims can get and away from his goofy pg13 holiday faire(check out 'caveman's valentine for a sort of companion piece to fisher king) Now then, the first thing that came to mind when i read EW's OHP preview was RED DRAGON.
i joked that it looks like there'll be 3 adaptions when all is said and done of thomas harris' brillaint red dragon novel(which is my fave book of all time) but just seeing that preview pic and description of the premise gives me the creeps.
this could really be a really turning point role for williams. now then, is it me or did tarzem singh completely rip off mark romanek's visuals in the cell? look at 'bedtime stories' and 'closer' to see what i mean(then again check out bros. quay 'streets of crocodiles' for the original inspiration for closer and the cell) i can just imagine what the look of OHP will be like. anyhoo, one hour photo is definately on my top 3 films this fall list(next to bubble boy and waking life)

ripping off visuals - the truth

    by half vader

While the (brilliant) Brothers Quay is the right tone for those visuals, Closer, The perfect drug and those pathetic Tarsem rips are actually based on the work of phototgrapher Joel Peter Witkin. So there you are. Romanek at least has the skill to make them homages though. Tarsem's just an unintelligent whore.

Mark Romaneck FINALLY gets his hands on directing a feature length movie! BTW, the man also directed incredible videos such as Nine Inch Nails "The Perfect Drug" and "Closer," Madonna's "Bedtime Stories", Fiona Apple's "Criminal" and so many others. This man may be the greatest untapped video directing resource since lil' Davy Fincher sprouted wings and flew! I can't believe I'm excited to see a fucking Robin Williams movie... it's been almost a decade.
