ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO adds cast members!

Published at:  May 28, 2001 11:42:50 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... with what sounds like a way cool, ubercool line up of actors and actresses for ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO... Antonio Banderas will be playing El Mariachi, Salma Hayek will play the knife wielding Carolina, Quentin Tarantino will play Cucuy, Eva Mendez will play the female federale Agent Ajedrez, but then... then it gets all confusing.... according to this article in a Mexican Newspaper from the province where they are shooting ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO... the film is also has Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Marco Leonardi, Ruben Blades and Cheech Marin on board. That's a pretty darn cool line up of actors... but I can't tell who plays what from there on out... See... either Johnny Depp or Mickey Rourke could play the CIA guy.... Either Mickey Rourke or Willem Dafoe could play the General... I just can't figure it out... hm... guess I'll have to see the movie next spring to figure it out....

This little piece in yesterday's Correo Correo-gto.com.mx

The State Coordinator of Tourism (Cotur) through a bulletin disclosed that the movie to be filmed in different settings of the area, will take as title “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”.

The cast is composed of Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp (!!!), Salma Hayek, Quentin Tarantino, Eva Mendez, Ruben Blades, William Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Marco Leonardi and Cheech Marin; the producers are Elizabeth Avellan, Carlos Gallardo and Robert Rodriguez, also mentioning that the latter is also the film's director and writer.

N.

To answer the question about recurring characters that have died in previous films... Well, Robert sees the 'El Mariachi Trilogy' as being a trilogy only in theme... The films are not meant to be a continuing story that picks up where the last one left off.... This is a trilogy like Sergio Leoni's MAN WITH NO NAME trilogy was... Why are FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE and THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY considered a trilogy... There is no continuing story... The characters in the three films could be considered different from film to film.... and ultimately there is never resolution. HOWEVER, it is a trilogy because the three films represent the 3 MAN WITH NO NAME films directed by Sergio Leoni and starring Clint Eastwood.

Now on the El Mariachi series... it gets a bit different, the three films all take place in a mythical modern day Mexico, all feature a unnamed Mariachi character with a guitar case loaded with weapons. But do not think that Salma is playing the 'bookstore owner' character from the last film... she's someone different now. You'll see.

  • This movie sounds like a bad idea. I don't know why, though. (actually, I do. Desperado, although kinda cool, was not that good...and neither was El Mariachi for that matter. Big whoop. Bring on Spy Kids 2.)

    who cares

    by frink82

i mean i know harry is friends with rodriguez and all but do we really need almost daily updates on this movie. Rodriguez has proven that he can make slightly above average action flicks, but he has yet to make a really good movie, and maybe if harry could stop blowing the guy for 2 seconds he would realize this. The more Harry continues to hype this thing up the more disapointing it will be when we're faced with its mediocrity.

Rodriguez makes fun, exciting movies. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe not on par with Leone, but cool nonetheless. And this *is* cool news. The End.

I got kicked out of the board for the two words "Who cares" just days ago.

Well, Robert rules and so will this film. I don't see anything that could go wrong except for Rourke. But hey, I trust Robert. He knows what he is doing. He'll make it.

    by anton_sirius

I always thought that El Mariachi was the 'reality', while Desperado was the mythologized version of the story that crooks might tell their kids at bedtime to get them to behave (and from the opening sequence I've always thought Rodriguez saw it the same way.) But now with a third film... where does he go from here? And with Johnny Depp tagging along, too? And where's Steve Buscemi?

For anyone who thinks "Desperado" was overrated, go back and watch it. "Desperado" and "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" were two of the coolest action flicks in recent memory and are imminently watchable. Seriously, there are a million movies that you can only watch twice, but those two are ones you can a thousand times.

...that's exactly what I thought! Maybe that's how characters can reappear after they're dead...it's all just some whacked out myth that doesn't make sense...that would explain a LOT.

Also, how did the Mariachi get a robotic hand at the end of "El Mariachi"? I always wondered that.

C'mon, El Mariachi is Ash's Mexican counterpart. Next thing we know he'll be going back in time to team up with some Aztecs so they can kick deadite ass or maybe kill some vampires. Or something...Either way, TM is already set to go wait in line._TM_

    NO CONNECTION??!!!

    by miamiloco

Didn't Antonio in Desperado have a hand injury?? Given to him by MOCO in EL MARIACHI?? And wasn't there TALK of MOCO (even a dream sequence) in Desperado?? Ok now please put on a straight face and tell me that These movies are NOT connected. I'm sick and tired of Mr. Rodriguez. I had so much respect for him and then he changed his OWN formula. "You don't need a big budget to make a good fil". Well that's true since Spy Kids was a terrible flick that Lowered it's story for kids. Disney doesn't have to lower it's story, that's why they are enjoyed by BOTH kids and adults. So now Mr. Rodriguez is changing again?? Now the third movie isn't really CONNECTED?? It's can almost see the money signs in the eyes of Robert. so sad =(

remake of a great movie. and say what you will, but am i the only person who believe antonio can't act to save his life. Let get all the res. dogs make a cameo so we can cross the two movies together to make one giant genre. now thats cooking. And as far as Rourke goes i have like his stuff 50% of the time but did anyone else see animal factory where he played a cross dresser? that scared me for life

    Rodriguez

    by virkku

Films of Rodriguez are not great art, but they are generally highly entertaining genre films and far superior than 95% of similar stuff that Hollywood puts out. I haven't seen Spy Kids yet, which seems to be his best film so far, according to critics and general audiences. This project sounds very interesting. Maybe Tarantion could help him with the scrip? Rodriguez sure knows how to direct, but his scripts are often very flawed.

the fact he isn't mentioned here makes me doubt the veracity of this report. still sounds damn cool nonetheless. bring back mickey rourke, dammit! and let's not go thinking robert rodriguez is the second coming or something - he's a pretty sharp director who makes fun movies but he's got a way to go before he can wear comparisons with leone.

Will you friggin people knock it off with this "Rodriguez sold o

    by rogue_leader

Look folks Desperado was an exploitation action flick yes, but so was EL MARIACHI! You guys should check out Rodriguez's commentary on the Mariachi/Desperado two sided DVD. He basically says he intended both of these films to really just be action flicks. He said that people think of film like El Mariachi as being "deeper" because they are told in foreign langauges. Kinda of like the people who think John Woo's stuff is Kubrick like. Look folks Rodriguez is just trying to make cool looking action movies and he does it VERY well. His action flicks are better than MOST of that garbage out there. So just lay off him and enjoy these movies for what they are. I think his newest Mariachi will be good. BTW stop blaming Rodriguez for "Dusk Till Dawn" that movie suffered because of QT's ego. That idiot was acting in lame movies when he SHOULD'VE been making good ones (Destiny Turns On The Radio anyone?). Look where that got him....

Yeah, if you want to blame Rodriquez...

    by milktoast

watch The Falculty. Yep, that one had a few flaws in it. As for From Dusk Til Dawn...that was a mostly fun film and worked for the most part. I'm sure either Tarantino or Rodriquez would like to be "blamed" for that one. Desperoado just didn't have much for me. Lots of great action, but I got that gasoline headache from it after awhile. Smelled good for a while until it was all noxious fumes. (Huh?) Spy Kids was surprisingly very good and probably the shining gem in his young career.

To the Rodriguez haters: When you see updates for his films why do you feel the need to talk back in a negative way? skip the link please and bother someone else.

I'm sick of defending robrod, he is the man, go read "Rebel Without A Crew" and you will understand why this man deserves praise. If not for that book I would be out a great deal of money, time and inspiration.

Keep the updates coming Harry, any word about Rodriguez is a good one.

    by kojiro

The man does make good action flicks, what more can you want from him? Hey miamiloco, exactly which Disney films aren't "lowered" for kids and can be enjoyed equally by adults in lets say, the last seven years? All kids movies are "lowered" because if they weren't then they wouldn't be apealing to the little tykes limited intellects now would they. Maybe you should consider switching to something a little less corrosive to the mind than coke dude.

    by brother putney

I dunno, I think the best Disney movies can be enjoyed equally by kids & grown-ups: check out "a bug's life" sometime. I was surprised, it's honestly a great movie, it actually works on enough levels to satisfy either audience. Yeah, it's aimed primarily at kids (i mean, it's a cartoon) but there's plenty of stuff for older, jaded folks too: a really clever villain, cool references to other movies, some great chase scenes, a score that I personally think is Aaron Copland-esque, excellent animation, and from time to time a real sense of jeopardy -- there's a particularly nasty locust that I was surprised didn't give the movie a PG rating. And also, "Toy Story 2," which has a plot about children outgrowing their toys that I think only adults can truly relate to. But then again, I could be wrong, I'm on the powder meself.

    Why the guitar?

    by magnoliaman

I'm kinda interested in this film but why does Rodriguez insist on continuing this guitar case motif? It's a meaningless device and it's not like guitar cases are a common fixture among gangsters, bandits or other criminal types. Personally, I felt it was even a kind of silly concept when he used it in El Mariachi. In Desperado it got ridiculously annoying. There was no reason for the guitar. He didn't even play guitar (except during the credits). Basically, the guitar was just a way of making a generic, typical movie seem original and striking. And why the hell would someone shoot a rocket out of a guitar case? I know it looks funny but you have to integrate the idea into the film, not simply insert it at random if you want it to be remotely satisfying. I can't believe a guy has actually made 3 films about someone who carries a guitar case full of weapons. In the first movie it was a mix up and kind of made sense but why the hell would a guy turn his guitar case into an army base after the shit he went through in El Mariachi. What's he avenging? He killed the fucking guy. This should be a much longer debate, I'm not doing it justice. But Rodriguez is a lazy writer looking for a quick and easy way to imitate Leone and Woo. Leone's movies were great because he thought through the whole story and characters and arrived at imaginitive ways of telling the story. I hope this movie is better than I think it's gonna be. El Mariachi was the good, Desperado was the bad and I fear this might get ugly.

This guy should be making a major comeback, he's been getting really good notices for his supporting parts in recent movies, and he was easily the best thing about 'Get Carter'. I always wished it had been him instead of Travolta in 'Pulp Fiction'. Tarantino should give him the lead in his next movie.

    Ghost on the Mojo Wire

    by tectorgorch

Alright- slam Rodriguez all you'd like, but he's still out there rolling film while most of you are sitting in front of the dull glow of a computer monitor with damp boxers, a bag a cheetos, and a sore rod from chronic self abuse. Give the guy a break. As for his assertion that these films are not connected by story: there is a film historical line of resoning for his statement. As follows:

    1. If you knew anything about Mexican Cinema (The only country with a larger film industry is India) you would know that this kind of filmmaking and sequel structure is extremely common. It is also common in Italian filmmaking which is a tradition R. Rod dips into with deep ankles. Leone himself had plans to "kill off" Eastwood, Wallach, and VanCleef in the opening sequence of "Once Upon a Time in America". Thomas Millian starred in a series of "Sepraco"esque cop flicks where he played a character named Rambo. In some of those films he even died at the end only to return to the screen the next year as the same charachter. Even American films have some precident for this. The great Howard Hawks did three films whith John Wayne. The best of these are "Rio Bravo" and "Rio Lobo" where the Duke plays basicaly the same charachter, the stories are basically the same, but they are not linked by a continuing storyline.

    2. If you want to get pretentious we can whip out Big Daddy Joseph Campbell and note that myths grow and expand with each retelling. Looked at in this way the "Marachi" myth is the growing expansion of the same story as the story leaks from the backwater Mexican town where the events occured to the bustling metropolis of Mexico City where bigger is better and the story has now passed into legend. There is precident here in the Authurian legends. A simple Celtic Warlord is retold, refigured, jammed into new cultural context, raped by the french and by the time the 20th century rolls around he is unrecognizeable from the historical king- and his character, as well as those of his knights, have several interwoven storylines in which they do some of the same things, have different adventures, and even get great deeds attributed to the three and four different knights.

So in closing. Get out of the basement. Leave yourself alone for a bit so the jism can settle and your heartrate can drop. Turn off the goddamn computer...then read a goddamn book. You're going to give yourselves a hearttack from all of the microwave burritos and incessent masturbation. Oh yeah- get jobs your parents are tired of paying for your sloth.

"A Bug's Life" was the one I wasn't sure of. I couldn't remember whether Disney did Antz or Bug's, but as Antz appeared to be revoltingly shitty and the little I've seen of Bug's seemed to be quality I asumed that Antz was Disney work and Bug's was Dreamworks. Haven't seen Toy Story 2, but now that I think on it I do seem to remember some adults, who weren't tied to young children, who enjoyed Toy Story.
