hahah.. anyway... the comic was kick ass and this is a liiiiittle different than the comic. but I think the liberties taken will be justified.

The best part is how cheaply they filmed that scene...That's actually John Hurt without his lifts.
-
hehehehehheee. butts. hehehhehee

oh come come Harry. Surely you can recognise Mr Merrick when you see him. Does that mean the other isn't genuine either
-
I am looking forward to this one. Nude women aside, I think this could be a worthwhile film.
-
I'm away from the Talkbacks for a while. I pop in and what do I see? We got bush. Me likey. There was a time when the closest thing to porn on this site was an animation of Harry coming out of a swimming pool like Phoebe Cates from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Harry, you dirty dawg, ohh, how low you have gone. What else have I missed? This site could be the new Mr. Skin. And check out those tits on the Elephant Man!!! Woo hoo!
-
And that 2nd pic ain't bad either:o
-
I didn't think the Elephant Man and Jack the Ripper were contemporaries. Anyway, this film seems interesting. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to puke up my lunch. Thanks, Harry.
-
(Paraphrased from memory of comic):
Jack: Why, Mister Merrick. You are without doubt the most horrifically disfigured speciman of a human being that I have ever seen.
Merrick: Fank you for your candor. I find it most wefweshing.
Jack also tries to cheer Merrick up by mentioning that if he lived in India, he'd be worshipped as a god, due to his looking like the elephant-headed god Ganeesha; Merrick thinks this is pretty cool. :) -
I don't have my copy of the script for "From Hell" -- I think it's in my attic -- and I don't remember "The Elephant Man" scene for scene, but I know my movie makeup, and this can't be from the John Hurt version. The makeup's different enough in the details, although I still think it doesn't look as rough on the right side of his face as it did in the black and whites. And as for the Elephant Man and Jack the Ripper being contemporaries, they were definitely both prowling London at the same time. Jack was making his way through the prostitutes of Whitechapel in the late summer and fall of 1888, while Joseph Merrick would have been on the other side of town fascinating a higher class of British subjects. Trust me, I know my serial killers and sideshow freaks.

I like most of Alan Moore's comics, but the whole idea of Jack the Ripper being Queen Victoria's doctor, under the spell of the Masons, is moronic. Anyone who knows anything about at all about Jack the Ripper knows this is nonsense.
-
Need I remind you it was a graphic novel? They took liberties, but also did a lot of cool research. I've watched biographies on Jack where they suggested that it may have been a physician. If you're going for dramatic impact, why not make it the Queen's doctor?
-
This movie was fabulous! I really enjoyed, more than anything else I've seen this year... test screenings are great, especially when it's the very first one! Trust me, the movie will be wonderful... I'd say Oscar-worthy. And as far as the "From Hell" story, it IS fictional, attempting to unify the various theories in an entertaining manner. SO, tell me what a "rational" explanation of Jack the Ripper was... just some nutty barber with precise anatomical knowledge who managed to avoid the best-organized, most capable police-force IN THE WORLD, at that time? After five murders? And he just did it for the heck of it, right? "Okey-Dokey".
-
After reading this thing, it put me in a very @#$%ed-up state of mind. I had already done reading on the Freemasons prior, and during the progression of the novel...the architectural connections, the methodology and the mindset of the "Ripper" character were profoundly disturbing. I almost wanted to retch during the ending. I couldn't believe someone wrote all of this down with such detail and could wake without nightmares. All I can say is Mr. Moore must be a very lonely man...

Number one: I agree with the above poster, if you want to keep kids out, you're going to have to come up with something better than that...lest the parenting groups get mad.
This is one of those movies, like Shadow of the Vampire or American Psycho, for instance, that will be visually arresting, might be good, but will struggle to find an audience. Yes, the graphic-novel-geek (I use geek as a compliment) audience will search this one down, but many may not like it due to it's departure from the source material, and the general public most likely wouldn't "Get it." And I don't think Oscar has the guts to give this any more than nominations. So, 20 million if it's lucky, the good news is that it couldn't have cost that much to make. :-)
My opinion. Probably not yours, but i like it anyway. -

-
It's got some talent both in front of and behind the cameras so here's hoping, and of all the films coming out this year this is the one I'd most like to see them nail down and get right. Even if they do though I have my doubts on whether it'll do much in the way of box office, at least in the states, it'll probably do better internationally though. Also I have to say that I still think they should have stunt cast John Hurt as Merick, or at least used his voice, though.
-
Well, first off, let me say I am ashamed to admit I HAVEN'T read the g.n. (thank god for the San Diego Comicon, I can still get it though...). However, I have read quite alot about the story, and about Alan Moores' research into it, and his theories, albeit them bizzare, are no bizzare than the actual facts of the case itself. For God's sakes, there is a reason why it's still the most famous murder mystery of all time!!! Also, there is really no need to start making speculations into the quality of the movie from a few production stills. We should wait until it's out to cast our votes. Personally, I am extremely hopefull. Comic-based film adaptations are in dire need of intelleigent, mature subject matter. As for the elephant man, I'm not sure how closely David lynch's film came to accurately portraying his deformaties, I think it's neat that this film kept with Lynch's visual idea. It's like stage make-up homage. OK, enough of my nonsense. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.
PS - The nude scenes? Who cares? If you are either laughing or offended...grow up. Not to be mean, but seriously... -
Forgive the momentary lapse of ignorance but what exactly is From Hell? I can't find any sites on it.
-
I guess it would be too much to ask for that lady on the left to be flipped over...........
-
Not the Elephant Man, that is one of the Mutants from Total Recall!
-
The idiotic theory of "From Hell," is that the Queen's physician Dr. Gull killed the prositutes while practicing Masonic rituals in order to hush up a scandal concerning the marriage of the Queen's son to a prostitute. Does this really make sense to anyone? The Ripper was obviously a complete raving lunatic. If there had been such a scandal, and the government wanted to keep it secret, would they trust the operation to a complete lunatic? Would they try to keep something secret by turning it into one of the most notorious murders of all time? Read some serious books on the Ripper! No one who acutally knows anything about the Ripper takes the Dr. Gull theory seriously. NO ONE!
-
I'm just as worried as Exit is about the way the adaptation is going to be handled, but I think the scenes in the Opium house relates to the opium addiction that, I think, the detective involved in the Ripper case had. Also R Nathan, what is impossible about the Royalty of the time covering up what could have been the scandal of the century? The killing of some prostitutes would not, I imagine, be any problem to the upper classes. They would have viewed them as of little importance.Unfortunately that is the horrors of the class system.

I have read the novel and wont expect to see the film till at least the end of the year in England. I have a few problems with the novel and a few things on this site.
The novel itself is a great story, but thats it, its just a fabrication of the truth. Yes its possible that Gulle did commit these crimes, there is also a possibility that any number of theories could be the truth. the point is there are to many floors in each theory to consider it to be the truth.
The novel itself is nothing new. Stephen Knight bought the Gulle theory many years ago, and all Hughes has done is add a bit more graphic detail and a very stupid story with Abberline being an opium addict. This is false, it is Huges's way of trying to make the story his own, and he fails.
The second problem is some of these posts on this thread. In reference to these letter sent to the Central News offices are faked letters written by journalists to sell papers. This has been proved to be the truth. These same journalists also gave the name JACK THE RIPPER.
And to correct a previous pst about Stewart Evans. Mr Evans is not the laeding ripperologist in this world. Your statement about him going through each detail in the film are confusing me. It confuses me because, Mr Evans is in full belief that Jack The Ripper was an American doctor. This is also a false theory.
If you are looking for a way of reaching the truth read this.
In Joseph Barnetts statement to the jury in 1888 about his indentifying of the deceased at Millers Court, he says he identified the woman as Mary Kelly because of a bracelet on her wrist. Although the body had been ripped up the hair still there, which Barnett didnt use in his testimony. Here is the question. WHO WAS KILLED AT MILLERS COURT? In my view not Mary Kelly. This my friends is where the mystery starts. -

Clearing up misconceptions RE: Alan Moore, FROM HELL, and the mo
by musashi74
I just want to clear a few things up. Alot of people have been slagging the historical accuracy of From Hell as it pertains to the Ripper murders. As anyone who's read the actual graphic novel and its attendant footnotes, Moore simply chose Stephen Knight's theory because it fit his idea of a FICTIONALIZED account of the murders. Moore states quite plainly in his index to FROM HELL that the graphic novel is in no way an attempt to portray what REALLY HAPPENED. He used the Ripper crimes as a means of exploring themes of ritual and serial murder. So to everyone bitching that FROM HELL isn't accurate, or is a fallacy, NO SHIT. Moore said this himself, and has made many mentions of portions of the book in which he altered facts (or fabricated them outright) to fit his STORY. Yes, the basic idea was taken from Knight's (probably fictitious) account in JACK THE RIPPER: THE FINAL SOLUTION. Yes, Moore knew it was probably bunk. But you have to admit, he did his research. Take a look at the followup to FROM HELL, DANCE OF THE GULL CHASERS. This explains much of Moore's motivations for writing the story the way he did. The bottom line is that NOBODY knows who committed the murders, and any fictionalized account will of course be B.S.
In regards to the film adaptation, I am not holding my breath. From an earlier script review, it seemed that the Hughes Brothers have aced a lot of the occult and hallucinatory subtext that made the comic as fascinating as it was. The above shot of John Merrick is hearting in that at least they seem to have maintained the Elephant Man/Ganesh connection. So maybe it won't suck after all.
But please, can we just stop shitting on From Hell because its not 'historically accurate'? It's not supposed to be...
Loosen up, and go read the comic. -
BORING......Zzzzzzzzz

St. Bluggering, (or whatever your name is), no disrespect, but cultures and people have been exposed to bloodshed and violence since the beginning of time. If someone's nose starts bleeding, would you be morally obliged not too look...or is they cut their finger? How about if they punched a kid. On the other hand, on in the 20th century do we have mass acceptence of women exposing their bodies for money and fame and having sex for the whole world to see and masturbate over to their sick little fantasy's content. No one jack's off to the beginning of Saving Private Ryan...and no one goes out and re-enacts the invasion of Normandy to the local townsfolk either. On the other hand, all sex offenders are porn and sex addicts. Now I'm not complaining about these two pictures...it's just nudity...big deal...but I'm just making a point. Everyone knows the scenes in Bravheart are fake...any mature kid over 13 should be able to see it (with his parents consent). Martial Arts is violence...but no one treats Dojo's like nudie bars.

by dave_f
All you guys back-and-forthing over the accuracy of Alan Moore's facts...go re-read Musashi's post. He's exactly right. Moore wasn't attempting to "solve" the Ripper crimes. "From Hell" is most assuredly not a whodunnit. It's Alan Moore taking some of the wilder Ripper speculation and using it to craft a brooding story about misogyny, madness, and the Ripper crimes as a quasi-metaphysical event that set the stage for the greed and excess of the 20th century. Musashi, again, great post. Everyone re-read it before posting more nonsense.
-
Ok, what we're dealing with here is an adaptation of a fucking good graphic novel. (Novel as in "groundbreaking" as well as in "fictional." Graphic as in "pictures" and as in "explicit." Fucking as in, well, you know... prostitutes.) If those guys are going to adapt a graphic novel, adapt the Graphic Novel. No one is claiming that this is true. It's fiction, and a brilliant exploration of ritual, sexuality, and conspiracies which only (possibly) Grant Morrison could do better. I'm very, very pleased with the Elephant Man shot. The tattooed strippers are a farce. In Alan Moore's story the prostitutes are *women*. They have acne or are fat or whatever makes them normal and not movie stars. Also, there are no opium dens. Sheesh. All I want is an adaptation of an Alan Moore story. I don't want the truth behind the Ripper killings, and I definately don't want some bastardization of a truly great graphic novel. Oh, and to whomever said Alan Moore should play Jack: you're right. He is the scariest looking man alive. Except maybe for Christopher Walken and Fred Durst.
-
I'm not complaining because "From Hell" is fiction, I'm complaining because it is idiotic fiction. If the ruler of a country wants to kill someone to keep something secret, the ruler is going to hire a professional assassin, someone who could do the killing without a lot of attention. The government is not going to hire a looney psycho nut-case to do the killing. That doesn't make sense on any level - not even in fantasy.

Response to R_Nathan (massive spoilers ahead for those who don't
by dave_f
Have you actually *read* "From Hell", Nathan? Alan Moore by no means presents Gull as a "looney psycho nut-case." Or rather, that's not his public persona at all. His public persona is that of a brilliant, highly-respected surgeon with a high capacity for discretion and an air of moral superiority over the lower-classes. In fact, before Gull's even assigned to "take care" of the prostitutes, he's performed several dirty deeds for the royals and properly kept his mouth shut. I'm not saying the idea's not far-fetched, but Moore goes to great pains to establish why Gull would be entrusted with such a grave task. And, of course, the royals *do* freak out when his handling of the prostitutes becomes a public debacle, unlike his previous work for them. They didn't expect it, dig? His madness hadn't perforated his public persona when they first "commissioned" him. Don't forget that Gull would also seem ideal to Victoria because of his Masonic ties and the allegiance and secrecy inherent in those ties. For all intents and purposes, he *was* acting as a professional assassin. In some ways, he's even superior to some mercenary-for-hire because he's not doing it for money, but seemingly out of total allegiance to the Royal Family. As for your assertion that Jack the Ripper must have been "a complete raving lunatic", I can only respond "bullshit." I don't care how much Ripper lore you've read (and I'll admit straight-up, I've read none) - there's no way ANY of your sources can truly know the mind of a killer who was never caught or identified. Certainly not all modern serial killers come across as total lunatics. Many even seem to have been able to live a semblance of a normal life. And once again, I'm compelled to point out that Moore makes no claims to accuracy, and fully acknowledges that the source material for the Gull theory may be largely fabricated. BUT THE STORY IS NOT A WHODUNNIT. It's about larger ideas that Moore wanted to explore, and Gull was the vehicle he found most appropriate. I mean, if you're gonna grouse about the realism, why not go after the REALLY wild stuff, like all the magical events that occur? Magical apparitions, magical glimpses into the future, magical fourth dimensional patterns, etc. In light of these elements, I'm confident in saying that Moore wasn't overly concerned that you take his theory as gospel. "From Hell" is ultimately a story about very, very disturbing ideas. It is not a police report.

The first pic is from "The Elephant Man" with John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins.... So what? As for the second pic, it looks like something you would see on SKINemax on Friday or Saturday night. Again I must ask - So what?

Actually, Sgt. Bilko, TIME AFTER TIME was a pretty good movie
by kingkrypton
Yes, it was far-fetched, but it was executed with such skill and energy that the premise was pulled off in grand style (no surprise, since it was Nicholas Meyer doing the job). As for the idea that Jack the Ripper was a "raving lunatic," how, may I ask, does that explain why the murders he committed were accomplished with surgical precision (like the removal of inner and outer body parts)? Would a typical raving loony have just done the ol' careless hack and slash style of killing? It certainly seems to me that Jack the Ripper had to be (a) well-versed in medical procedures and (b) be rational enough (if one can actually call being a serial killer rational) to have carried out said killings in this fashion.

by buzz maverik
Of course, if I'd let other people in and not bogarted the opium, maybe things would have been different. Also, I had cooley problems from day one. These new jack cooleys did not know how to brew a decent cup of black tea for me to drink between pipes. And they could never get the cool cloths for my forehead the right temperature. Either too cold or not cool enough. Or they were too dry or too wet. There was a time when being an opium den cooley meant something, but not today.

I heard the same rumor about Denzil playing the Black Panther, and although Washington's one of the best actors I hope he'll be playing T'challa's father...I'm sorry but Denzil's just a tiny bit to old.I've said it before and I'll say it again the only actor to play the Black Panther is Morris Chestnut. I pissed about these pics, what's so cool about them? The girls are hot, but I can find more reveling pics anywhere, and the elephant man has always scared me since childhood.I remember going with my parents to see it when I was really little, and they had to take me out of the theater.Damn you Harry for making me think it was gory.
-
Thanks for the kind comments Cormorant.
And as for R_Nathan, I really have to say, who cares? 99% of all speculation on the Ripper case is bunk. I'd say the William Gull theory is just about as likely, or NOT likely, as any of the others. I highly suspect Nathan hasn't read the actual novel that FROM HELL is based on, otherwise he'd know that the reason Gull was chosen was because of his status as a Mason. He was TRUSTED because of his Masonry. But, once again, Moore simply chose the Stephen Knight version of the story because he felt it made the best STORY. And I agree. Given the scope of Moore's narriative, which includes equal measure of political machination, ritual magic, serial murder, time travel, class struggle, and out and out suspense, he was right in choosing the explanation he did. So what if it's not likely? Neither is fucking Star Wars, but nobody ever complains about that! Are you gonna avoid "Lord Of The Rings" because of a lack of 'historical truth'? I'm inclined to think that the adaptation of FROM HELL will suck, not because of shoddy logic or lax historical standards, but because from what I've seen, the movie has been shorn of all those elements that made the book so wonderful. FROM HELL was told primarily from Gull's point of view, and doing it any other way will kill the story. David Lynch shoulda directed this when he had a chance.
