A Couple of Set Reports from THE SUM OF ALL FEARS

Published at:  May 09, 2001 11:41:04 PM CDT

Well, Father Geek has found a couple of set reports on THE SUM OF ALL FEARS waiting in my mail box here at Geek Headquarters, so here they are for you to check out...

Hi,

Long time reader, first time poster. I had the pleasure of being an extra on the set of Paramounts latest Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan extravaganza "The Sum of All Fears", currently filming in Montreal, in particular, the Olympic Stadium where they are filming a scene set at the Superbowl. I was lucky to be seated right by the field, and when not rubbing elbows with the film crew or making small talk with the cheerleaders (the scene took place at the 2003 Superbowl in Baltimore), was able to take part in the action.

There seemed to be the filming of two major scenes happening, one in which Morgan Freeman, playing the head of the secret service, rushes the president (James Cromwell) out of the game due to an unforseen threat (supposedly that of a nuclear bomb), and another scene taking place in the crowd, where Freeman receives a phone call on his cell notifying him of the threat.

After filming I had the priviledge of briefly speaking to both Mr. Freeman, and Mr.Cromwell, and they both appeared to be rather friendly, down to earth guys. Anyway Harry, if you decide to post this, just call me.....

Father Geek back with this note from ol' JoBlo himself...

You frying on the beautiful French beaches now, aren't cha?! FUCK ME!! Well, enjoy my good man!!

In the meantime, our own Dr. Drew was able to finagle his way onto the set of "Sum of all Fears" shooting here in Montreal, and here's what his day as an extra was all about (with some pictures): Just Click To The JoBlo Site ...

Have a blast!

    This sucks ass

    by rupert pupkin

I refuse to suspend my disbelief when Ben Affleck is the new Jack Ryan. That is like making Alan Cumming the new James Bond. I don't care how many blockbusters Ben has been in, because it's obvious he peaked in Dazed and Confused or Chasing Amy. He is not believable as anything but a sidekick. Hollywood is dumb enough to think that moviegoers would accept the transition from Ford to Affleck. What a fucking joke! Maybe Freddie Prinze, Jr. will be the next Indiana Jones! Maybe Jonathan Lipnicki will be Anakin Skywalker! Anything is possible.

    Jack Ryan

    by scifiboyuk

Can anyone say who's playing Jack Ryan in this movie? I heard a horrible rumour that they were going to replace Harrsion Ford with Ben Affleck. But that could'nt work if they were seeting it at the 2003 Superbowl.

    Amazing Larry and Ghandi:

    by mgthedj

In the book a terrorist character when told of the plan says "OH! Just like BLACK SUNDAY!" Clancy wrote the book during his NASTY divorce several years ago so it is a bit weak and obvious. And the game was set in a dome stadium in Denver, not Baltimore. Gahndi: the film you saw may have been the TV movie clone of BLACK SUNDAY called SUPERDOME.-----later-----m

    Conan

    by theharm

Somebody should call Tom Clancy and tell him to cast Conan O'Brien as Jack Ryan-hell then maybe Andy Richter could play John Clark the tough CIA hitman and Max Weinberg could be his sidekick Chavez. Hey, it could happen!-remember Willem Defoe as Clark in Clear and Present Danger? Seriously though, Ben 'Mr. Backdoor' Affleck? Puhleese!!

Joe Blow got some facts wrong

    by trinitron2

I was an extra there too, and Joe got some key things wrong. First, it wasn't the director Phil Robnson who was tyalking to the crowd on the p.a. system -- it was the assistant director, Dave something. Robinson never spoke on the p.a. system all day.

And Morgan Freeman WAS there all day long. As far as I could see, he was in every shot.

    AFLICK

    by tectorgorch

I had heard BA was in this picture. He's an OK actor- outside of action flicks- but...and I say this with some embarassment- I have read the novel "The Sum of All Fears" and Jack Ryan is supposed to be in his mid-forties and sporting a serious drinking problem.

You know who else has a serious drinking problem?

    by wee willie

Whoever thought of getting rid of Alec Baldwin, who rocked as Ryan. Ford has been sort of middling. Affleck is downright ridiculous. What is this? JACK RYAN: THE COLLEGE YEARS?

    Clancy: the new Stephen King?

    by hittman

Just to make this clear; I am a Clancy fan. However, after seeing the abortions known as Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, I know I will not be seeing this one. I suspect that like the pattern of the movies adapted from King book (compare Misery or the Dead Zone to Maximum Overdrive, Cat's Eye, etc.), for every Hunt for Red October, we will have multiple pieces of s*!t.

  • When I heard Asslick was in Sum of all Beers, I cringed and said,"Bad idea jeans."
Why are they making THIS Clancy book? Without Remorse and Rainbow Six have much better stories and should have been punched out before 'Sum came out. And Baldwin was great as Ryan in red october...however, that movie was also the best Clancy-to-film projects and also ranks alone as one of my favorite suspense/thriller/action/sub movies ever. Miles ahead of U-571 and Crimson Tide at least...Does 'Sum remind anyone of The Last Boy Scout? Awful, awful. Taylor Negron as the bad guy. You got to be shitting me. Everytime I see him on screen I am reminded of his short but hilarious parts in things like Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Whoopee Boys - Your little geek friend has spilled the proverbial beans.

    Well, that's too bad.

    by monkey lord

This movie, it seems, won't have any balls. The terrorists won't be disgruntled arabs (so I've heard), the president won't die in a nuclear conflagration... What BS. What a shame. When I heard that Sum of All Fears was being made into a movie, I was terribly excited. I loved the book, which really, really gave me a wake up call. Sounds like this will be another crappy..umm... what was the name of that George Cloony movie about nuclear weapons? Oh well: Exactly my point. It wasn't memorable in the least. Just another brainless flick where the good guys win no matter what. Oh well. Maybe the President won't get the word in time, and the end will be just as much a thriller as it was in the book. :) I won't hold my breath, however.

Pres not at game in book

    by donmovieguy

In the book, the president wasn't at the Superbowl. I believe that the Secretary of State and a few other gov't higher-ups were there though.

Also, about what the one guy said about the book having been written during a messy divorce for Clancy: that would make sense and would explain why he had Mrs. Ryan acting like a tremendous she-bitch throughout almost the entire book.

Of course it's been awhile since I've read the book, so I could be wrong. IMO, Without Remorse would make a seriously badass movie. It's got everything: prostitutes, drugs, Navy SEAL torture methods, a tragically flawed hero, prostitutes...

    Speaking of Clancy books...

    by the garbage man

Was anyone else disappointed with The Bear and The Dragon? The plot was OK, and it had some interesting elements, but the style of writing was very un-Clancy. I can't really put my finger on it, but the craft seemed very rough - repetition in phrases, mannerisms, etc.; things that I've never noticed in his books before. Oh well, can't blame a guy for phoning it in once and awhile.

The president and his ho Elizabeth Elliot missed the Superbowl due to a last minute calling away. But they did have seats reserved and were supposed to go.

    The Garbage Man

    by rightwing dude

I was disappointed with THE BEAR & THE DRAGON as well. In fact, I could only read the first 750 pages or so of it (out of 1,027 pages). There were too many characters, the story dragged (with elements not essential to the story at all), &, while I have never minded the military techno-babble before, there was far too much of it this go round. A pity seeing as how I loved RAINBOW 6 & EXECUTIVE ORDERS (the ending of both were absolutely brilliant). As for this new movie, I loved the book & am disappointed to know that (1) Ben Affleck (?????) will be playing Ryan & (2)The movie, like CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER, will not follow the book. Why did Clancy even give his permission for this movie to be made seeing as how he hated CAPD & PATRIOT GAMES?
