PEARL HARBOR: New Commercial; Newsweek Cover Story & Review!
Greetings, citizens! HREF=mailto:robogeek@robogeek.com>ROBOGEEK here with a couple updates on the PEARL HARBOR front.
Monday night, I happened to catch the latest (third) TV commercial for PEARL HARBOR. It's as evocative as the others have been, and includes several new shots, as well as actual score from the film. I can't help it; as a marketing geek, I love these sumptuous TITANIC-esque spots - and just hope this movie is as good as they make it look.
Anyway, I digitized this latest spot into a quick-and-dirty 320x240 2.9 MB QuickTime file, and you can grab it for yourself at THIS LINK! (If you have a Mac, just drag-and-drop the link to your desktop to download.)
(BTW, you can still find our copy of the first commercial here - though why these gorgeous spots haven't been officially released online, I have no idea.)
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the web, NEWSWEEK snagged an exclusive this week with their big-ass PEARL HARBOR cover story by John Horn, which offers an intermittently fascinating look at the making of the film, which they declare "the most anticipated film of the summer." (They'd better hope it is, since they've put it on their cover.) Sidebar items include short, fluffy interviews with stars Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnett. Ah, Kate...
Finally, there's the review by David Ansen, who seems to be the first "real" critic to review the film (though, I presume, in unfinished form). He says, "Hollywood movies don't get more Hollywood than PEARL HARBOR" - which is either a good or a bad thing, depending on how you choose to look at it. (Ansen chooses to pepper his review with obligatory anti-Bay/Bruckheimer potshots.) Ultimately, though, he concedes what we already know: "Superbly marketed, PEARL HARBOR is the very model of a modern blockbuster."
Well, I'm certainly glad that's settled.
Sleeping more soundly,
- Robogeek
P.S.: For more goodies, be sure to check out the best PEARL HARBOR fan site on the web, pearlharborfilm.com. (FYI, they've got the second TV spot available for download.)

I just saw a COUNTDOWN TO PEAL HARBOR on E.T. and it kinda made me groan, but yeah, I kinda have more hopes for this flick then THE MUMMY RETURNS just because the crazy bombing sequence looks insane. I'll be all over that. the rest will at least be able to admire some pretty cinematography, at least. . .
-
David Ansen's review confirmed every fear I had about this movie...I'll still go see it, just because I have to, but outside a few arresting visuals, I expect a total crap fest.
-
Titanic vs. Pearl Harbor. That's the point. And you know what? Titanic's gonna be the winner, because of three reasons:
a) Jim Cameron is FAR FAR FAR better director than Michael Bay is (that's Aliens vs. The Rock!!!). He's been better til' now, at least. (Jeez, Bay's actor too!!! Mystery Men!!! Coyote Ugly!!! That's a career!!! ... GodBless IMDB).
b) International market: Titanic is more universal, and it hasn't got that US' stuff people around the world hate (US anthem, US flags, US heroes... sorry, but's that's true), and probably Pearl Harbor will have it. And I don't want to begin another talkback-fight among Europe and US!!!
c) Kate Winslet... -
Batutta, you shouldn't let a critic's review confirm any feelings of yours. This is a film the critics have been salivating over getting to rip apart(see Peter Travers). The name Bruckheimer is like a juicy steak in front of a hungry wolf to these guys.

They really need to start promoting this movie more if they want
by troublemaker2000
Sure we know about it but what about your average moviegoer? How are they supposed to know that this thing is coming out Memorial Day weekend? Note to Disney: Maybe some free publicity with a national magazine or something, maybe get some trailers into the theaters, spend some of those Disney Dollars on TV commercials, billboards, bus stop posters, sides of buses banner ads, you've got to spend money if you want to make money you know! Greedy cheap bastards won't even promote the damn thing unless it's free advertising. Some people never learn.
-
The only reason I'm so interested in this topic is because it's daring to challange James Cameron's Titanic, attempting to rehash this magical success formula (if there was one). Hype alone does NOT make a good movie, and so far from this film I'm seeing nothing but hype.... I'm praying that Pearl Harbour doesn't match or beat Titanic's grosses, that'll just make Hollywood feel smug with themselves and we'll see an endless stream of wannabe-Titanic epics over the next few years.
-
I'll tell ya why the critics love to write bad reviews for Michael Bay's movies (and Bruckheimer), they're terrible. You're welcome for the news flash. Saw The Rock since it starred three great actors and promised to be some fun action. I wanted to leave after 20 minutes. At that point in time I swore I'd never see another Bruckheimer movie, and I'm always glad to stick to that promise when one emerges. I love a good action movie, but Bay and the rest of Bruckheimer's cannon only know the mechanics and nothing else. Those of you who are into this kind of stuff, I don't understand, but you have my blessing. I just don't understand the people who go because it's an "event" film. How many crappy "event" films do you waste your time and money on before it sinks in?
-
Dude, where have you been? No publicity? This trailer's been in theaters since TRAFFIC.
-
Bad Boys was OK, The Rock I thought was badly edited but didn't blame Bay in particular.
On the other hand Armageddon seemed to be exactly the sort of movie he wished to make. Yuck! It was flat out inept!
The recurring theme with Bay seems to be the reduction of drama, characterization, mood and plot to the point of near-nonexistence. He seems to want to make feature length trailers.
I will give Pearl Harbour a shot, but doubt Bay will have the savvy to effectively invoke the hokey traditions of past films as Cameron did with Titanic.
Titanic was such a hit because it was a perfect blend of classic hollywood 'drama' and modern action film thrills. Will Bay show he understood this? We'll see. -
Praise be to the lord this movie is going to be shit!!! Right. Firstly I'll admit it now. I have Armageddon on DVD. Sorry. But I can honestly say Ive only watched it all the way though twice. And one of them was at the flicks! Why have the DVD then? The same reason that 95% of people who have it! The destruction of New York at the begining is the ultimate Kick-Ass demo of my home cinema to impress the hell out of visiters and my family. You didn't really think I'd have it because its a great movie did you? I want this film to fail sooo badly. Not because it buggers up known history in order to make a film more sellable. I'm used to that from Hollywood now and don't expect it to change anytime soon. No, I want this to fail because it represents that ulimate bastard son of Hollywood, the 'painting by numbers of film-making'. The above talkbacker that said that Bay now seems to have confused success with talent has hit the nail on the head with that statement. If this fucker makes serious money and God forbid even makes more than Titanic, it means that Film making as an art form will die in Hollywood. It also means that someone of Bays talent level will beat true film making talent of the likes of Camaron, Speilberg and Lucas, to become the director of the biggest grossing film of all time.(lets not start an anti lucas talback back here. He has the respect of his peers and most of the early stuff he made at Film school is stunning). If Bay should enter that most exclusive of clubs, then I weep for Hollywood as Hollywood should weep for itself.
-
Man, I was constantly laughing at the trailers with one of my ol' friends, those Zeros flying like bees (same as the helis in Godzilla), the bombers attacking at low altitude and so on! That was so stupid, I still can't believe! The Mummy Returns is a perfect dumb movie, but this one is making history suck!
-
Couple of quick points and I'll bail.
1. I don't expect films that have historical themes to stick rigidly to historical "truth". The problem is that in todays world where kids are getting their History from films like this and classrooms where only the slimmist thread of truth is ever taught. (How many of you were taught about the Pilgrims robbing fresh Indian graves to eat the corpses?) Another problem is that films are so agressively cross marketed. I was working on one of these really expensive, really crappy $90,000,000.00 films in '95 and while I was hanging out with the publisist he was telling me how they use cable outlets like A&E, History Channel, and TLC. Even if its not an overt sponsorship like "The Mummy Returns" shows on Discovery this week they will pay to have documentary and reality shows on that highlight their storyline. Titanic did this well with "unsponsored" programming all over cable at the time. The problem with this is that kids start to blend reality with fantacy. Many kids if asked about Pablo Picasso will think he was doing his most vibrant work around the time of the Titanic sinking, which in fact isn't true since he was seriously starving and just getting out of the house at that time. Kids will make little connections, though, because Picasso's works are featured promanently in the film.
2. The post comparing this to "IDA" and "The Patriot" is dead on. The F/X in these historical films are less impressive to all but the geeks(god bless 'em) because they involve visuals many of us have seen on old newsreel etc.
-
How stupid is Disney? They greenlight $130 million for a F/X heavy, apple pie, "historical drama" with little to no international appeal and think they've got another Titanic!?! Eisner has gone brain dead! This movie is all hype! For months now all I've been hearing is how P. Harbor is the "most anticipated" and "biggest" movie of the summer. What!?!
That's all hype...I've got A.I., JP3, Tomb Raider, Mummy Returns, Planet of the Apes, Atlantis, Shreck and others on my list of summer popcorn fun way above P. Harbor. This puppy is DOA...I'd be shocked if it's one of the top 5 movies of this summer, let alone this summer's "tent-pole" movie...please. -
I read this mornings talkbacks, and the fanboys have struck again. I have seen the movie called everything from revisionist, jingoistic, Anglo-centric, racist, and From Here to Eternity rip-off. Maybe it is these things, and maybe its not. I wouldn't know because of one important point...I haven't seen the movie. That's right! I haven't seen the movie, so how should I know? But I will admit one thing: You bet your ass that I'm going to see it. That's right fanboys. I'm looking forward to this movie, and I can't wait until it comes out. The preview with John Voight's FDR voiceover sends chills up my spine, and the action sequences seem dead on. Historically, it looks accurate, and I am looking forward to how they portray the Doolittle raid on Japan. It amazes me how you fanboys are so ready with critism. While I admit that Armageddon sucked, I think Pearl Harbor will be good. As a moviegoer, I'll roll the dice and take my chances like I do with every movie. Everyone says that the internet is a great tool for bringing "communities" together, and AICN is a great example of how well it works. It provides a forum for critical, sarcastic losers who don't like anything and are always trying to prove how smart they are. You should all move to Austin because you would fit right in here. This is a great place to sigh, roll your eyes, and say everything sucks...except my ideas of course because I'm the only smart person in the country. Fanboys can go to hell.
-
All this talk about Titanic has just reminded me how much I loved that movie. For me, it's one of those rare cinema experiences I will never forget (Star Wars was the other). I totally forgot I was sitting in a darkened theatre when I watched that movie, I was swept away into 1912 and didn't even realise it until it finished... I don't think Pearl Harbour will have that effect on me, not after seeing that US propaganda teaser.
-
At least now we can be sure this movie will win NO academy awards (with the possible exception of visual effects and sound). The review made it look even worse than I expected!
I loved Titanic and I tell you why.
Cameron actually had a PASSION other than making money. He was completely obsessed with his attention to DETAIL. He KNOWS how to tell a love story. He is the BEST action director who has ever lived. Bay is a HACK, cameron is a true FILM-MAKER. Also,
I'm predicting this movie will NOT make Titanic money. Titanic had a love story that was wonderfully executed and that's why it got so many repeated viewings.
-
Michael Bay makes the kind of movies that most people like to see: Ones that do not draw a fine line between good and evil. People are going to look at this as the feel good SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. I'm sure a main character dies, and all of that stuff, but it's just gonna end up being a propaganda film like so many were during WWII. That's fine. Don't go see it. I won't. Michael Bay is probably the biggest hack (besides Joel Schumacher) working in the movie business today. It doesn't matter though: People pay to see his movies. When I saw that sack of shit Armagedden in the theatre, I was surrounded by a theater of people of weepers, people who probably hadn't cried since Kennedy got shot. Did I cry? Hell no, that movie sucked, with it's slow-mo tracking shots, It's quick cuts, and it's absolute lack of character development. But shit, I'm a long suffering move nerd, and I imagine I have a touch of playa hatin' in me. If you really hate Mike Bay, Fuck this movie. Stay home and make your own.
-
That's right, all you guys are a buch of player haters. You are envious of Bay's wealth, money, connections, influence, women, cars, houses, etc. __________________We have the the usaully stupid retarded remarks by AICN talkbackers: "Gee, I know this movie will suck camel's dick, but I will still got and see it.!" What kinda of ingnorant shit is that? _____________Let's face it, come May 25, ALL of you will be sucking Bay's dick and tossing Bruckheimer's salad. Everyone of you. All Bay wants is your $8.50. he doesn't want your acclaim.
-
At least now we can be sure this movie will win NO academy awards.______Hmmm, didn't you say that about Gladiator?
-
Yeah, I'm sure Bay will be crying himself to sleep tonight because some moron named Kyle Reese thinks he is a hack.
-
Jim Cameron is a brilliant technician...but the greatest action directors are...in decending order:
3. John Woo
2. Sam Peckinpah
1. Akira Kurosowa
-
In fact it and all the Iowa class battleships (the finest ever) were still in construction during Pearl Harbor.
I'll tell you what the "Mighty Mo" did do, though: serve as the flagship of the entire United States fleet, blast away at the enemy with its massive 16 inch guns, and have the unconditional surrender of Japan happen right on its deck in Tokyo bay. -
"At least now we can be sure this movie will win NO academy awards.______Hmmm, didn't you say that about Gladiator?"
Well, Gladiator had a pretty lousy story but I can understand why it received awards. Russel Crowe and many others gave REALLY good performances and it had good direction by Ridley Scott (except in some of the poor fight sequences).
I'm sure the effects in PH gonna be super (although very unrealistic) but I don't like the look of Michael Bays films (way too filthered and orange glowing visuals for me). On the other hand Gladiator looked magnificient. (and Titanic looked even better but that's another story...)
I'm predicting the only redeeming factor in this film will be Hans Zimmer's score. I think this movie will make around 300 million (to top Armageddon) in US but much less in the rest of the world. This is not gonna be a new Titanic.
-
What's your fucking problem? I'm making decent enough comments. It's dickheads like you that ruin these talkbacks. Why don't you fuck off and take your camel-fantasy comments with you.
-
Don't be delusional, your comments aren't all that great. And noboby is losing any sleep over what you think.
-
...He's one of the few critics I agree with more often than not. No, I don't follow a critics opinion just because he's a critic (god knows I don't follow Harry's), but after a while I see a track record of how certain reviewers react to a certain type of film, and I can more or less gauge the resulting quality of the film. For example, I know if the movie's about black people in the inner city, chances are Rogert Ebert's gonna love it, but that doesn't men I should rush out to see it. If a movie's a dark statement condemning society, Owen Gliberman will cream his pants. If a movie has no plot but a cool visual groove, Peter Travers will praise it. Just hearing the style Ansen said this film is made in (a truncated, highlight reel), I know Michael Bay has not overcome his biggest failing -- an attention span shorter than a ritalin baby on crack. Foolish me held hope that somehow, with Randall Wallace writing the script, Bay would find it in him to shit his pill of talent, like Tony Scott did with Crimson Tide. But no, we're gonna get a two and a half hour trailer again, a movie that's a commercial for itself. Music video and commercial directors are ruining filmmaking because they're ruining our ability to engage stories on a dramatic level. Instead, movie's have become products that are always trying to sell you an image, an idea of what's cool and fashionable. That's why you have people complaining that movies and television are portraying negative images to children. It's because people can't tell the difference between dramatic storytelling and advertisement anymore. They think anything they see on a screen is trying to sell them something, and the sad thing is, they're usually right. Studios don't care about telling stories, they just want to sell you the idea that this movie is cool, that if you see it, you will be cool, and if you see it again, you'll be even cooler. Of couse, the studios were always salesmen, but the problem now is that the salesman dictates what product gets made and how. Now, with the co-opting of music video and commerical directors (whom the studios are employing almost exclusively now), the corruption is complete. Even with the best of these guys (David Fincher namely), I still feel like I'm being sold something, a concept, rather than having an idea or theme developed and expressed dramatically. In this new age of filmmaking, image is indeed everything.
-
No wonder hollywood hires comersial directors. That's all these people do. They sell things. Just like Bruckheimer & co sells his products: Random images put together by a hack. Let's see: Titanic scored big - let's steal the sinking boat scene! Our audiences doesn't want a history lesson then for gods sake don't give them one! Saving Private Ryan was great - let's use the Beach scene! and on and on and on...
-
That has to be the stupidest assumption I've heard in AICN.
That is not at all possible. Armageddon happens to be the most movie in the history of filmmaking. -

pearl harbour, brought to you by the attention span disorder lea
by film snob
after watching a few Micheal Bay and Jerry brakinheimer(I know it's misspelled) films I now know their formula for sucess. First grab about four 10 year old boys, and lock them in a room with filled with candy and cola. Allow them to only watch MTV. After a few days release them into a yard full of toys, and record the results. Take said results and cobble them into a script. Release a hyper active adolescent movie to appeal to those with A.S.D. Also be sure that no edit last more than one second. This will confuse the audience into believing there is a plot. Hear is a sample of Pearl Habour based on my experiments.
Exterior: Boats blowing up and neat stuff. lots of planes.
Camera: move it around alot, add neat sound effects to camera moving.
Scence: Billy sad on exploding boat.
Billy:I love you don't die(Cut to explosions and neat stuff. then cut back to Billy a close up crying. cut to planes flying.Planes sound neat all around the room ZOOOM! WHEEE!)
Scene:Bombs start droping on boat Billy runs towards camera carrying his hurt girlfriend. (slow explosions loud noise COOL! Play sad music. Make explosions sound neat!)
----------------------------------
There that sounds about right. -
Ive just downloaded one of the ads being shown over in the US and I have to say that to show the ad of a film that deals with the death and destruction of hundreds of lives dureing one of the most pivitol points in the history of the 20th Century and to then have at the end of it a caption saying 'features the single...blah blah', speaks very highly of the integraty of the movie and screams "Please love this film like you did Titanic because a lot of execs put their ass on the line green lighting the budget for this bloody film" The main thing I got from this advert is that when ILM insiders say that this is the best work they have ever done, they aren't kidding!! At for THAT reason ALONE I will most likely see this film.... and to see if it be worth buying on DVD as a demo piece (shallow reason I know but hey, this films gonna be shallow....)
-
Pearl Harbor will be exactly what it sets out to be - perfect summer popcorn. I

That has to be the stupidest assumption I've heard in AICN.
That is not at all possible. Armageddon happens to be the worst movie in the history of filmmaking. -
A lot of people in Hollywood have buckets of money and mountains of cocaine and swimming pools full of hookers. Michael Bay happens to be among the less talented of the lot. I probably will see this (I might wait for the video) but I am definitely expecting it to be awful. The worst thing is being Canadian and sitting through movies like this and The Patriot and Saving Captain America. I also sort of wonder why they invited all the veterans to the premiere, since it seems quite likely that 'Pearl Harbour' is a super expensive insult to anyone who was actually there.
-
I saw Armageddon on tv again the other
night and wanted to make a fewpoints about this film. 1. Why is it
daylight in every city on the planet at once? did I miss a key plot
point? Or is this something new to teach the world to sing
in harmmony. It looks like a coke ad. Bay is a tool he is trying
to brainwash the american people. If there is another war i would
recomend him as the minister of propaganda.(Funny how he works for
David Finchers Propaganda Films company ) AS FAR AS THE JAPS GO,
THEY NEED TO EXEPT RESPONSABILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS IN WORLD WAR 2!!!
Stichting Japanse Ereschulden
It is a Dutch organization, which is trying to get compensation
on behalf of its Dutch-Indonesians citizens. It is for confinement,
pain and suffering inflicted by the Japanese Imperial Army during the
Second Worldwar in Southeast Asia and particularly in Indonesia
(1942-1945). WHY YOU ASK? Well heres a letter I got from my grandmother
on what the Japanese Did and why the govenment should Do
or say something :
In the beginning of the War my mother, brothers and
sister were evacuated from Borneo, where we lived and ended up in
Java, where we eventually ended up in several camps over the years
(three and a half years approximately). My father remained in Borneo,
ostensibly to help defend the country against the Japanese enemy
forces. However the country fell and my father and the other men of
this little company town by the name of Teluk Bayur were all grabbed
and put in a camp. His job had to do with the running of the coal
mines and when he refused to collaborate with the Japanese to get the
coal mines in operation he was put in solitary confinement.
( Prior to the Japanese invasion, they had made the mines inoperable,
so the Japanese could not use the mines.) Just days before
Japan surrendered, he was decapitated. When all the men were put
in camps, the homes of all the employees of the firm were left empty,
so all the contents were looted and plundered. After the war was over
and we found that my father was dead, we went to Holland since we had
relatives there.
Happy Story huh? I aim to inform.
-
lol - That's a good one.

Kyle Reese,
I guess that I never post anything interesting because I have never posted anything prior to today. I started typing in a fanboy induced fit of rage. You people kill me. -
A lot of people bashing the film like hell but I think they all gonna see the movie anyways. Buncha hypocrites. I'm there opening night. Might watch the film 3 times easily. I know I'm going to enjoy this movie. Its the summer for crying out loud. We're supposed to see loud movies. Its going to score big at the box office and surpass Armageddon. This movie is being compared to such films like Titanic and Saving Private Ryan. Why? because its a loves story set in front of a historical backdrop and also its another take on a significant moment in history. I love Jerry Bruckheimer and I love Michael Bay. Like Jerry Bruckheimer always says, great characters in great stories. And I'd love to spoil for all y'all. After being a long time fan of both, I know that Michael Bay will kill off Kate Beckinsale's character. After listening to all the commentaries on his DVDs, he mentions he has the tendencies to kill off characters you begin to love to shock the audience. So expect that. I have all of Jerry Bruckheimer's movies on DVD. I love Michael Bay's stylistic direction, music video style, it makes the movie more fast paced. I think they're great filmmakers. This will be and IS the biggest film of the summer. Next up will be Planet of the Apes. The Rock is my favorite Jerry Bruckheimer film. And my all-time favorite action film is a toss-up between The Rock and Face/Off by John Woo. My opinion of the greatest director of action films is John Woo and 2nd runner up is Michael Bay. To me, its all about the film's style. Anyways, just wanted to change the mood of this talk-back cuz I think all the other Bruckheimer/Bay fans are afraid to speak up cuz of thinking that the bashers will be in on their case....well I don't care. I'm gonna love this movie. Peace.
-
I agree with darthrage. While I am not a huge Bay/Bruck fan, I agree that we need to wrestle to talkback away from the fanboys who will not let themselves enjoy a movie because that would mean they weren't smarter than everyone in the room. Imagine *gasp* actually going to a movie and letting yourself enjoy it instead of trying to impress all your fanboy friends by using big words like jingoistic and revisionist.
-
TITANIC WAS ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN. The ONLY reason it is AT ALL admirable is because of the DETAIL with which the entire thing was created. I marvel at that level of commitment and talent. But the rest of it SUCKED. It was drawn out, boring, and the "love story" aspect was pure and utter trash. Leonardo DiCrapio put in the worst performance of his life (considering, of course, that nearly all of his performances are tied for that award) and Kate Winslet had a lame-ass, poorly written character. Bill Paxton was wasted on "Titanic", just like he was in "U-571" (not the best sub movie ever, but whatever). I'm going to see "Pearl Harbor". I'm looking forward to "Pearl Harbor". I didn't think "Armageddon" was the best movie ever, but it didn't suck, either. I'll tell you what sucked: TITANIC. And "Gone in 60 Seconds". That was pretty bad, too...
-
I don't think Michael Bay makes particularly bad films. Some of them are fun, but that's about as big of a compliment they get. They don't try for anything more than a superficial appreciation. WHAT PISSES ME OFF IS that now he is trying serious subject matter, yet handling it in the same way as his previous films. It's like if they ever made, "A very special episode of 'Married with Children.'"
-
Look, as a student of World War II history (my BA is in Modern German History, I also have an MA in National Security Policy with a concentration in military theory), I am concerned that one of the most critical events in America history is being mode into a movie by Hollywood's most notorious MTV, pop-culture, vapid, more-explosions-equals-more-moolahproduction team of Bay/Bruckheimer. I liked the previews, they were visually very good, but showed us nothing of the actual story. From what I have heard, the story itself is hokey and takes an awful lot of artistic license. I doubt that we will get the real story, warts and all. I am afraid it will turn out to be an overly-PC shlockfest, out to eliminate anything offensive to anybody. People with an appreciation for history have good reason to be ambivalent about this movie, and Bay/Bruckheimer's track record does not engender much hope that the subject matter will be treated with respect and dignity.
-
It's always truly amusing to watch how self-important people can feel when they have an annonymous forum to post on. Armageddon the worst film ever? Please. 5 minutes in any video store and I'll shove an armload of movies into your arms that make Armageddon seem like Citizen Kane. Hell, did anyone see Wing Commander?
It's fine if you don't like Bay's style, no prob. There are movies that people rave about that I just don't like just as there are movies that I love that others can't stand. However, I remember a couple of years ago when the Talkback consensus was that Titanic was the biggest, most steaming pile of shite ever excreted on an audience. Now, it's a great movie that no other could compare to. The Talkbacker's roundly criticize the execution of a movie that they've never seen based on the director's previous work. Hmm, the same thing that they did to Titanic. Regardless of what the 100 posters here feel, Bay and Co. make movies that bring in huge audiences and make bunches of bucks. This allows him to make the movies that he wants to. He gets paid to do exactly what he wants to do. Would that everyone was so lucky.
Matt DeLuca -
It's the reason I love this website... And anyone notice that as we discuss this film over and over we're basically building the hype even more.
-
I was hoping against everything to go see a good movie, but I guess I'll pan 4.50 to see some compelling special effects. You people are getting ripped off if you pan more than 8 bucks. I would never pay that much for a movie. A trip to the cinema shouldn't cost any more than what you might find under the couch.
-
One thing that never ceases to amaze me about people who post here. Aside from the complete idiocy of hating Pearl Harbor and "desperately wanting it to fail" three weeks before it opens, aside...there are those who would say "God forbid that it makes more money than Titanic!" I remember this same line of thought two years ago when Star Geeks were SURE SURE SURE that Phantom Menace will CRUSH Titanic at the box office. I'll say the same thing now that I said then: Any film (ANY FILM) surpassing Titanic in the next ten years is a financial impossibility. Bear in mind...Titanic was released on December 19th...at the very tail end of a movie season meaning that it's major competition was Dean Koontz' Phantoms and Desperate Measures. The delay from July to December was the sole reason that that Titanic had the success that it did. No summer movie EVER could ever achieve that kind of success...especially not one that opens at the very BEGINNING of a summer season...and has The Mummy and JP3 to contend with. Please...for youw own credibility, stop comparing Pearl Harbor, Episode II or anything else to Titanic on a financial level. It only makes sense.
-
It's summer time, everyone. That means big blockbuster summer flicks. I don't know about you people, but I've been waiting for this since the holiday movie season. Summer is for popcorn flicks. That's when the seats are filled up with people who don't even care about Oscars show up to see brainless big-budget action flicks. I love smart films as much as the next film fan, but everyone needs some popcorn sometime. I don't know if I want to see it opening weekend. Too many crying babies, toddlers, and cell phones. I won't mind the old folks so much. I think I'll take my grandpa to see. I bet he'll really like it.

It's summer time, everyone. That means big blockbuster summer flicks. I don't know about you people, but I've been waiting for this movie since the holiday movie season. Summer is for popcorn flicks. That's when the seats are filled up with people who don't even care about Oscars and see brainless big-budget action flicks. I love smart films as much as the next film fan, but everyone needs some popcorn sometime. I don't know if I want to see it opening weekend. Too many crying babies, toddlers, and cell phones. I won't mind the old folks so much. I think I'll take my grandpa to see it. I bet he'll really like it.

Looks like Michael Bay got swindled out of a couple million clams by a young trader in an enterprise worthy of Gordon Gecko himself. Some people are calling it criminal and litigation is imminent, but why not just consider it good-ole', karmic retribution for the 900 million dollars Bay's overwrought, overhyped, masturbatory "visions" have swindled from the movie-going public worldwide? Are we sure Don Simpson was the cokehead of the duo formerly knows as Simpson-Bruckheimer? Ever since Don's "passing", Bruckheimer has gone on to produce one steaming hunk of shit after another. And as for the dickhead who posted earlier about "hating" Bay's work but still owning the DVD -- you're a fucking nimrod. I hate small-dicked home theater marks who insist on wowing everyone with their big, loud speakers and all of that other shit. That also goes for the assholes in here who spend more on rims than their car is worth and insist on blasting their systems for all the world to marvel at their juice. May the applicable experience a severe outbreak of anal warts.

hahaha you yanks must be so sick that a bunch of slitty eyes totally fucked your navy.

the film does look excellent

"It's always truly amusing to watch how self-important people can feel when they have an annonymous forum to post on. Armageddon the worst film ever? Please. "
I don't think Armageddon was the worst film I ever seen. I actually thought I was a fun popcorn film that not should be taken seriously. What I thought was that it was the worst film I ever have seen with that kind of budget. I think Bay could make a decent film if he stopped using his MTV style and paid a little more attention to detail. -
Fuck you for calling the Japanese "slitty eyes", you fucking racist. And you'd feel bad too if ANYONE, Asian or otherwise bombed your navy. Oh, and shitface, you seem to be forgetting that we got the Japanese back FAR MORE than they ever got us. And no, this film doesn't look excellent. That statment just proves how stupid you really are. Why don't you go burn a cross, fuckhead?
-
Don't take Darth Terry too seriously, folks. Afterall, they're still smarting from having their assess handed to them 200+ years ago. The Brits and their silly dialect--they sound like they have a fat dick lodged in their throats. The UK's a big joke and if the U.S. and Russia hadn't entered the war, those limey cocksuckers would be speaking German right now.

To answer all those who say that anyone complaining about this movie will be in line like everyone else, that this kind of film is ok, and that Bay and Bruck are justified, let me say this.
It is RIGHT to care about film, just as it is to care about music. To draw a comparison, it's like someone saying "I know the new Britney Spears album is shit, but I'll buy it anyway because the production is slick, the videos had a lot of money thrown at it and she's famous."
You are not sheep, and scum like Bruckheimer have no right to treat you like one. I have all the time in the world for blockbusters, I enjoy the hype and I like event pictures and all that, but you have to draw a line somewhere.
Pearl Harbour will cross that line by about fifty feet. Big movies are fine when they don't insult your intelligence and treat the audience with respect. Pearl Harbour will do neither. This is a sick cash in on victims of war for cheap gain by an untalented hack with a money grabbing bastard holding the reins, why should any sane intelligent person give people like this any money? Like an earlier poster said, if this does serious business then it gives every lazy producer in Hollywood carte blanche to flood us with this shit more than they already do.
That's what Pearl Harbour is, lazy. Cut-and-paste film-making from the bottom of the deck. And I don't want anybody saying "you haven't seen it" Look at the track record of the two key men, now look at the reviews, then make a very accurate assumption, simple.
This is a lean summer and it will probably clean up, which is a shame.
I'm glad it'll do crap business worldwide, I live in Ireland and it won't make many waves in Europe, we truly despise that flag waving crap and rightly so. It'll make money, but hopefully not too much, because those involved do not deserve success.
And for anyone saying that anti-Bays are motivated by jealousy let me say this, I work in film at a much lower level and I would not trade places with this prick, why? because I take pride in my work and live well, that's all I need. But in the case of Pearl Harbour I am exercising my right as a consumer to say "Fuck this, I am not a moron, you won't get my money" If enough people think the same way then Disney will be posting shit financial figures.
Don't let them away with it -
All you US Navy base are belong to us

While I respect everyone's right to have an opinion, I have a hard time listening to anyone's opinion on what makes a good film considering NONE of you have ever written or made a film that has been produced by a studio. For all of your talk, you are all fanboys for taking a thread like this seriously, a bunch of fanboys agruing about useless shit in order to appear cool. I don't even pretend to take my opinions seriously on film. I do not worship Hollywood. Maybe you should all stop too.
-
I don't know, obviously the guy likes money, and lately it's seemed like he tries to make each movie stupider and noisier than the last. And Michael Bay... well, I kind of liked The Rock. Tony Scott is generally the best director in the Bruckheimer factory. Top Gun remains the model for high gloss, high tech flashy trashy actions pics. I think Pearl Harbour will be awful, and I think it will lose a lot of money and I think that that WILL keep Bruckheimer and Bay up nights. As for no film ever topping Titanic, I think Episodes 1 & 2 could. Had it been been a better film, Phantom Menace would have outdone Titanic. As it was,it was 'only' the third highest grosser in history, topping $430 million on hype alone. But Pearl Harbour can't do that. And it's 90 minutes before the action starts? 90 minutes of completely unnaffecting romance and male bonding and (presumably) a heavy dose of homoeroticism. And where did Bruckheimer et al get the idea that the movie going public wants to see Ben, Alec and Cuba? Their presences are among the most unnappealing aspects of this thing.

Boycott Pearl Harbor: The lie perpetrated upon the U.S. people..
by ban4life
...continues?! I hope not! As a History teacher, I get angry when history textbooks have inaccurate or totally false statements about historical events. We deserve the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It will be very disturbing to see this movie if it tries to rewrite history with the false claim that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack when our government knew about it way in advance and we had radar data showing the Japanese planes approaching Pearl Harbor. Read "Pearl Harbor Attack No Surprise", "December 7, 1941 . . . a Day of Deceit" and "The Myths of Pearl Harbor" at the following links for more info:
[http://www.independent.org/tii/news/001207Stinnett.html],
[http://metalab.unc.edu/pha/myths/index.html], and [http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/myths/].
This event in history is similar to how the U.S. government lied to their citizens in order to enter the Vietnam War. Read "30-Year Anniversary: Tonkin Gulf Lie Launched Vietnam War" at the following link for more info:
May 25, 2001 will be a day that will live in infamy if we continue to lie to the public and the world about Pearl Harbor and other historical events. It would be a great disservice to the memories of all the men, women and children who died around the world during WWII. We should make every effort to boycott this film if it continues to perpetrate the lie. -
Ok first off, if you are an American, this Movie should interest you. That day will live forever in our collective consciousness. It will also be one of the most important days in Japanese history. Yes, we had prior knowledge to the attack, however, its a bit tough to mobilize when you are just begining defensive positioning. This said, the movie looks like it will be visually stunning, if the score is half way decent it will effect everyone in the theater. what I don't understand is how every anti-american bastard comes to this site trashing things like the US Navy, Pearl Harbor, how stupid American Pride is... Things like that. Guess what, you are coming to an American Site, if you don't like it goto the Japanese site and read about how the bastard Americans destroyed their culture, and killed thousands of innocent people, or you could look at from our point of view. You bomb our Country and we will decimate your pathetic Country. As for the anti-history wiener, need I remind you, History is written by the winner. National propoganda happens in every country, but at least in the US you have the right in investigate if it is true. Try that in another country. In fact the USA can produce whatever the hell it wants... You know why? Money, and Power. Yes we have had a bloody past, we are relatively young, but guess what, we won. And you know why we will continue to win? Pride. American Pride. The Germans are about the only other country I can think of with a deep sense of pride that resembles that of the average patriotic US citizen. Thats why they took over Europe... and American Pride was the deiciding factor in defeating the Axis Powers (with a little help from the Russians). When we needed additional factories to tool new weapons, ever capable factory in the country stepped up... Our production easily surpased that of every other country in the world. Couldn't be matched. The Japanese were melting down every piece of metal in their homes to produce inferior rifles. The brits were making rifles from Bikes... Anyways this is turning into a major rant, but to paraphrase that office from Full Metal Jacket, "Inside everyone there is an American trying to get out". Perhaps in envy, perhaps its hate. but guess what we bailed your asses out before, and I am sure it wont be the last time. Now to the fanboys, fuck off you haven't even seen the film yet, all you do is bitch. I see you bitching about EVERY film, calling Harry a fuckin idiot or ripping on some director... This is absolutely pathetic, Oh BTW, if this were in another country you wouldn't be critical of anyone/anything... or perahsp a bullet will find its way to you. To all the wanna-be critics, you gotta stop hanging around art houses and noir theaters... It has clouded your judgement, ripping on a movie before it has been released is almost as bad as the wiener fanboys... Perhaps you are miffed cuz were beaten up by someone who later went to serve his country in the service, or perhaps you hate movies that are enveloped in the hollywood vision. Who knows, who cares. Go post on Usenet and talk about how you use to listen to "x" band before they were popoular and now they have sold out, and hence, suck. I dont buy the Bay/Buckhiemer hatred thing... because you bastards are wasting WAY too much time.. Its kind of like the self-loathing homosexual thing... Christ get over it... Judge the movie after you have seen it. Also please keep in mind that, since we Won, we can produce any fuckin movie we want and I guarentee it would be better than some sorid Nazi Pride film... Fuck off fanboys/wanna-be critics
- cthulhu
Proud to be an American and would defend the country in a heartbeat. -
Firstly: Ban4life, I believe you have posted this exact messege before somewhere, please stop, or create a new messege and note that the prior knowledge about Pearl Harbor is still conterversial.
Secondly: why the Michael Bay bashing? Let's use the Rock as an example (I will say that I love it, and think it is very well made and it IS one of the my top 10). The style of the Rock is flashy, but not too much so. The editing, I believe was well done for the most part. (contrary to what was said above). The acting was also very good. Whether that can be attributed only to the actors, or to the script and direction as well is of course up for debate.
Now, why is Michael Bay a hack? I have seen all of his movies (Bad Boys, Armageddon, the Rock). The first two movies did not have very much in terms of plot, but the were enjoyable to watch. The technique he uses where he films many events (no matter of what segnificance) with multiple cameras (where they are placed a different at different distances from the target) and use of extreme close ups adds to the feel of the movie.
Not one of these movies was terrible. The director brought many new things to the table (yes, the movies were all full of cliches, but the style of was filming is quite unique)
Lasly, and I will get flamed for this, seeing how much you love to hate Bay, I will say that one of the primary reasons I am seeing this movie is because Michael Bay made it.
PS: Sorry for the long post. Most of you will see this movie, and you know it.

Hmm, so cut and paste DOES work! -
...to Arjaybee's comment on how successful "Pearl Harbor" will be: it will probably be the biggest moneymaker of the year for one reason alone: mass appeal. Every demographic potentially will go in large numbers to see this movie. You get the elderly and middle aged audience hoping to see another "Saving Private Ryan" type of movie - historical pic. And you'll have the younger audience seeing it as the action blockbuster. This movie will be huge without a doubt. Doubly so because it's not running against anything, and it comes out on a holiday weekend. 200-250 million easily, if not more domistically. Plus the biggest moneymaker for the year.
-
Pearl Harbor is this year's Wild, Wild, West. Yes, it will open big, then dive bomb like a kamikazi pilot. We will all know the answers by September, but I stand by my prediction that Pearl Harbor won't be a top 5 film this summer and it damn sure won't be the biggest movie this summer. I'll do you one better...I'll take The Mummy Returns vs. Pearl Harbor and give you plus $10 million on the gross and I bet the Mummy covers the spread!

..... the name of the music that was played during the trailer for the movie?

ok, Ban4Life, let's play. How far can you go to prove that what you know about the events during, and surrounding the bombing of the Pearl Harbor is the "truth and nothing but the truth" as you say it, and that what you have read is the accurate and unbiased?
-
We're talking about a guy here who's devoted over a year of his life to a flick that wasn't easy to make, when he could have taken a better pay deal for any easier A-List project and saved himself the controversy. BAY IS NOT A HACK. He's still in his thirties, but has turned a comedian (Will Smith) and a character actor (Nic Cage) into action stars, has created a visual style that, love it or hate it, has become his own and on top of all that he made The Rock, which for my money is the best action film I EVER saw on the big screen (being 21, Raiders, T2 and the Star Wars trilogy were all before my time and I've only seen them on the small screen). The constant action should have become numbing, but in this guy's hands it didn't. I admit, Bay must share success for this with Ed Harris' performance and most importantly the excellent score, but he still deserves some credit. As for Armageddon, it made the mistake of trying to be too many things to too many audiences, but like someone on this talkback said, the action scenes (esp. the start) are awesome home cinema pieces. Bad Boys? Formulaic but fun - just what it promised to be, no more or less. I think this guy has real talent, flame me if you want because - like Kyle Reese pointed out - the non-stop bitching is the best thing about this site.
-
I'm not going to bash Bay, Bruheimer, or the rest of their ilk. They just go to work- day to day and try to make the best living they can. I will take issue with the rabid defenders who are saying that anyone critical of Bay and his ilk will be standing in line for this flick. I am yet to see the first frame of "Titanic" that isn't in some news feature, Some of us won't just go see- anyhting. The list of films I don't see is longer than those I do. Vote with your feet, folks...or better yet read a book.

Dear Guy Who Hates Armageddon:
Yes it does make a difference...in two ways. One, adding "in my opinion" makes the statement correct, because on any objective scale, Armageddon was FAR from being the worst movie ever made...and your opinion is all you have left to fall back on.
2: Your opinion has been formed in what must be a near vaccum, and you must not have seen many movies to declare Armageddon the all time worst. www.blockbuster.com. Try it. You'll like it.
On a completely seperate note, I just had someone e-mail to correct me on my statement about Titanic. It turns out that Star Wars has already beaten Titanic, and beat it long ago. This poster makes the claim that Star Wars is a six part story and all it's grosses have to be added together...plus video and merchandising receipts. Okay...in that case, I'll say that Titanic's grosses have to include the sales of every Celine Dion album ever sold, since we know why they were REALLY buying them...and also the grosses (foreign and domestic) of Beauty & The Beast and Up Close & Personal...since they included Celine Dion songs.
Can I throw in the grosses of Batman Returns, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Butch & Sundance and The Sting into Titanic's total...since they starred people who were in other movies that included Celine Dion songs?? -
A fair point, from a neutral audience's point of view, but historical innacuracy in war films only leads to unneccesary offending of the people who fought and died in those real events. Like I said in my earlier posting, I like Bay's work and will see Pearl Harbor, but I hope it's true to the real event (and despite what people think of them, I'm pretty sure Bay and Bruckheimer feel the same way about this event, if only because they know people are dreading their approach to the material any other way). If it's an event hundreds or even thousands of years ago it doesn't matter so much, but Dec 1941 is living memory for both Americans and Japanese so it should be recreated with respectful honesty. As I'm sure it will be.
-
And why are those people up at the crack of dawn playing baseball and hanging laundry etc? Why didn't they pitch a bat through the windscreen of one of those zeros? And the nurse/love interest/chick in the trailer, is that a 40's hairdo? A little more nineties to me. Just my $.02

I still don't get it, Faith Hill singing the theme song to a war
by kyle.reese
Ok, so Michael Bay's vision of a war film involves little boys playing baseball and little aryan girls dressed up as angels, but essentially... oh wait and a nurse for the two leads to lust over... Wait just a minute, is this even about Pearl Harbour at all?
-
Bay has INCREDIBLE detail on his films, in Armageddon, did you see the flag over the White House was at half-mast? Or did you know that they put all the right buildings in all the right places exactly when the comet hit paris? He DOES pay close attention to detail and I will see this and get it on DVD too. I hope this movie makes 2 Billion dollars just to piss all of you off, but I dont think it will because of all the other big movies this summer. By the way, they set off 350 Bombs in 7 seconds in one point of the film, the most elaborate shot ever in cinema, I havent seen it yet, but I'll be darned if I'm going to let a bunch of greasy haired basement dwellers prevent me from seeing this.
-
Your rebukes to Banned4Life save me a lotta typing. While studying for my master's in history, one of the first things I learned is that NO SOURCE can be trusted entirely, not even your own memory. Ask cops how often they question eyewitnesses to bank holdups or car accidents and get completely different accounts from everyone. History is a concensus of opinion based on agreed-upon facts. Conspiracy sites like the kind Banned4Life propogates are fun paranoia candy, but DO NOT TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY. Had FDR (our greatest President ever, but I'm a "fucking liberal" and proud of it) known about the Japanese attack in advance, he woulda made damn sure the Phillipines were ready. Instead, that right-wing cocksucker "Dugout Doug" (called that by his own troops on Corregidor) MacArthur left his air force exposed to Japanese bombs. Even the Republicans were smart enough to reject him a serious presidential contender in '48. And here I thought I wasn't gonna type so much...
-
In Armageddon, some people complained of it being overly dramatic. Well, if a comet about to wipe out earth isnt dramatic enough for you, what is? I'd like to know.

I am a new user who a few days ago stumbled across this website and decided to join. I am not a film critic, in fact don't know much about movies at all but I HAD to respond to some of the stunningly ignorant comments made by certain people in this "Talkback", as well as the one on how "Pearl Harbor" would be received in Japan. I'm 18 years old, so consider me one of those "ignorant kids" and a member of the mass audience sometimes referred to as "sheep" at this website. Let's get a couple things straight:
1.) As a soon-to-be-graduate of an American high school, I know extensively about what our government did to Japanese Americans in WWII. Some have you suggested that American textbooks deny this. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have a feeling that the people who accuse the school system of indoctrinating us with "propaganda" are the same people who are always mouthing off about how much they love education and how they want to help, but they don't. Quite frankly, I am sick of hearing about these camps. Wrong? Yes, but worse things have happened, particularly in the war, so quit whining. And before you start screaming "racism" maybe you should judge the action in the context of the times.
2.) This topic has been beaten to death, but I'll address it anyway. Roosevelt did not invite the Japanese to attack. Nothing he did made them do it. The truth is that Japan back then was a racist, imperialistic power that was Nazi in every way but name. They weren't "provoked". That is crap, and so are all these conspiracy theories. The people who believe in them are the same ones that believe the CIA asassinated JFK and that aliens landed at Roswell. Face up to the facts: the Japanese just wanted the U.S. out of the way so they could conquer the Pacific.
3.) As an "outsider" I didn't even know who Michael Bay was until I read all these posts. I was interested to see that he produced "The Rock" which I loved. "Armageddon" was just fun to watch, and if all you people who hate Bay for some reason don't like it, that's too damn bad. Cry me a river, losers, especially Kyle Reese and Baronvonflapjack or whatever the hell your name is. Tell me, do you make a living out of tearing down people you don't know and bashing the country you live in? Good God, you are a hypocrite. And by the way, I think this "Pearl Harbor" is going to be fabulous and will be the first one at the box office, so eat that, assholes. -
Why the fuck are people like you getting so personally offended? THIS IS A TALKBACK about movies, and it would be incredible dull if all we said day-in-day-out was "Man, this film will rock!", "This film is cool!", "I'm gonna see that!"... There is nothing wrong with critising a film (or the way it's marketed).
-
Kyle, it is equally dull to see people relentless bashing everything like that. You are obviously biased in your hatred for your own country(why???? I'm just curious really, I have never encountered someone with a similar opinion), which may explain your disdain for this upcoming film.
comicartist, I think the answer to your question is that before the attack there was very strong isolationist sentiment that made it politically impossible for Roosevelt to do so. People then did not think the same way they do today obviously. I might be wrong but I don't think the news of the Holocaust had gotten out yet. And anyway, we were already actually helping out Britain with shipments of weapons and supplies and stuff, and actually I think the Navy had already engaged German U-boats on several occasions. I think FDR was a good president, though, sorry! But you are clearly very political, and I could care less about politics so maybe I am just clueless:) -
I don't think one needs to hate their country in order to be a little alarmed at the foaming jingoism and historical revisionism of films like 'The Patriot', 'Rambo', 'U571' and, I suspect 'Pearl Harbour'. By the way, in Canada we also have the right to dislike bad movies. And the line from 'Full Metal Jacket', "Inside every Viet-cong there's an American waiting to get out" was, I believe, intended somewhat ironically by Kubrick. The entire world does not see America as the cradle of all virtue. Only Americans believe that. The rest of the world considers you fat, lazy and dangerous.
-
Fat, lazy and dangerous, huh? So you fear us? hehehe, I think that's pretty funny, especially you being a Cunuck! Tell me Dr. Floyd how is "Pearl Harbor"(or any of those movies you mentioned) historical revisionism? The Japanese bombed the base at Pearl Harbor. The movie is about.....the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor. What's so revisionist about that?
And by the way I don't think most of the world looks kindly upon us. You only have to read the papers to see that. But you know how you REALLY spell anti-Americanism? J-E-A-L-O-U-S-Y. hmmmm, Dr Floyd, do you really, really, and truly FEAR us?
P.S. As I recall Canada does not exactly have a spotless record concerning Japanese immigrants during World War II, either.
