From San Francisco Comes A Look At Jon Favreau's MADE!!!

Published at:  May 04, 2001 3:30:55 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with something of interest. Tonight here in Austin I'm hosting a screening of MADE... so far I've seen two reviews, this one and another that ran on the site ages ago... Both loved the film. This one says it is funnier than SWINGERS... Now I know what that makes you instantly want to say... (BULLSHIT) but listen up for a sec. Artisan is so confident in MADE that 2 and a half months out from their debut date... They are screening this film at college campuses all over the country. Showing it to Critics.... Why? Because they need and want to get the word out... before all the summer hype machines kick into gear.... They want people to know about MADE. People asked me why I was excited about screening this film for an audience early... it's because this is the exact sort of film sites like AICN should go that extra mile for. A film that doesn't have the covers of every entertainment mag in the store.... The one that has to work hard to get any ink at all amongst the $70 million and $140 million Studio Flicks with $30 million dollar ad campaigns. And all they want is for people to see the film and say what they saw.... Nanook... well here's what Nanook saw....

Hey Harry, long time reader, first time reviewer. You can call me Nanook of the North.

I went to the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco tonight to see an advanced screening of Made, the new Jon Favreau-Vince Vaughn film. All I can say is, funnier than Swingers. I know it's sacreligious, but I think it's the truth.

The story revolved around Bobby, played by Favreau, who is an amateur boxer. He promised everyone around him that if he didn't have a winning record after 11 fights, he would quit and take a job with the Mob boss who is sponsoring him. Great choice, huh? Anyway, since childhood, Bobby has been taking responsibility for Ricky, played by Vince Vaughn (in one of the funniest, most obnoxious performances that I have ever seen). Ricky is basically a complete fuckup. Bobby has to vouch for Ricky, to keep him on the payroll of the mob. Believe me when I say that Ricky is the dumbest human being alive.

I don't want to give too much in the way of spoilers, but there is a great cameo by Dustin Diamond (if you don't know who he is, then too bad for you). It is one of the funniest moments of cinema that I have ever seen. Favreau is on target to be a great independent director. His writing, as in Swingers, is flawless, and the whole film is shot handheld, which gives it a great look. Favreau was there afterwards for a question and answer session, and he was brutally honest about some of the bad films he has been in (ahem, REPLACEMENTS! cough) and had some great insight about independent filmmaking today. The film is great, and after you see Made, sneak into Planet of the Apes. Made deserves the money.

Nanook of the North OUT!

    Can't wait!

    by mad dog

Really looking forward to this movie. Was a big fan of swingers so much so went and bought GO on dvd before even ever having pre viewed it. DOH! What a mistake that was,(for once disagree with Harry) after seeing it I quickly realised where the talent lied in swingers (No disrespect to Doug L but the material was severly lacking.) Anyway, I got that on region 2 if anybody wants it for hard cash? It's a boil in my perfect dvd collection. So in conclusion hope this movie makes loads and replaces the swingers boys back at the top instead of Affleck and Hunting.

My God...could it be...? Legend hath foretold of a comedy...that DOESN'T INVOLVE FART GAGS AND BODILY FLUIDS! Finally, something that may be worth seeing this summer. Tis a miracle.

Isn't this the plot of Mean Streets?

    by otis von zipper

Alright, I am seriously looking forward to this movie. Swingers hit me just right. Get a nightlife indeed. And not funny???? C'mon! That scene with the "tough" guys in the parking lot where Sue pulls out a gun was a riot. I will be interested to see if Made measures up with Favreau behind the camera. Liman's "Go" was a solid follow up, showing a huge leap forward in style. How could anyone not enjoy that film? Give me Favreau/Vaughn over Damon/Affleck any day.

    The Real Made Men

    by tectorgorch

This movie may be funny. It may be a fuckin' hoot. It will not, however, rise to the kick ass level of Favreau's appearance on "Sopranos". That was some of the best work the kid has ever done, and some of the most dead-on real writing done about the film industry since F. Scott Fitzgerald got loaded and fell of a piano at Louis B. Meyer's house. That episode reminded moe of why I bailed out of the film business in the first place, and it made me laugh my balls of. Watch it on DVD, then see if you still think "Swingers" is so funny. Yes the guys in that movie were kinda "pussyish."

    Made---money

    by justoneoftheguys

I was on set for this one guys and let me tell you it's going to be great. Favreau deserves this he is a hard working talent. Not to mention a lineup with screech/jonathan silverman/big pussy in the cast and oh yeah Puff Daddy I mean P. Diddy(my bad). That guy who said Swingers isn't funny should be shot by Poof Daddy. Vince Vaughn is the man/hillarious and a stand up guy, this one works...

My thoughts from the Austin premiere (if it counts any)

    by proz

I actually was there at the premiere (10pm showing) and I did see Harry in the lobby talking to his usual followers. The movie in general just couldn't shake the "Swingers" attitude throughout the movie. Jon Favreau even admitted during the Q&A after the showing that there are inside jokes & references throughout the movie refering to "Swingers".

After watching, it felt like Mike & Trent (the characters from "Swingers") were turned into wanna-be gangsters, and Trent became the biggest dumbass/asshole, but in a comical way. I thought in whole it was good uproaring fun to watch, and would recommend seeing it. It was fun to see all the comical references, Peter Falk as the mob boss, Sean "Don't Call me Puffy or I'll cap your ass" Combs as a gangster, Jenteal as a stripper, even Vincent "Pussy" Pastrone as the driver. To top it, there was the whole "Screech" scene which will surely be talked about by the legions of fans repeatedly to the 500x times when it hits the mass market in the next couple months.

The only prob I had is that even that it isn't meant to be taken seriously, it just didn't have that sauve feeling that made "Swingers" so fun to watch repeatedly. Sorry for the comparison to it, but that cult film will be the main comparison to all future Favreau/Vaughn films, which I'm sure we'll soon be seeing more of over the next decade.

So should you go see it? Sure, see it for the fact that Favreau/Vaughn have some great chemistry together on the screen, and Vaughn has some great lines throughout the movie and some of his better work (why they won't promote this movie that much, but promote the horrific Psycho remake, I don't want to know what grass they smoke in Hollywood at the marketing department).

    MY "MADE" Experience

    by lokizero

so i'm standing outside the Alamo Draft House with my friends James and Lorena, waiting for the doors to open so we can see "Made", Jon Favreau's new movie, and a big black limmo pulls up. who steps out? none other than Vince Vaughn and his entourage, an attractive blonde with large breasts and this heavily-muscled guy wearing a black vest and a cowboy hat.

i watch them pass by, and nudge lorena, "that was the coolest thing i ever saw!" "what?" she says. she like, walked right in front of Vince, pretty much cutting him off, and didn't even notice him.

    pretty fucking cool.

so we get inside and wait for the movie. they play this really cool music over an early 80's dance instruction video on the movie screen...very nice.

So big 'ole Harry Knowles from Ain'tItCoolNews.com walks out to thank us all for coming and whatnot, and after nervously talking about the movie, he introduces one of my heros, the wonderfull Jon Favreau.

    we had really good seats.

we were only about 15 feet from the guy, and i'd always wondered exactly how big he was. i mean, he's a pretty good size fella. big enough to make me feel small, but that's really not that hard. anyways, he talks alittle about the movie and how everything's going, and he introduces Vince Vaughn. Vince comes out, waves his bottle of beer at the crowd and says "hey".

    he's a very cool guy.

Jon also introduced Peter Billingsly, their Executive Producer (?), who you might remember as Ralphy, the kid from "A Christmas Story".

so they left to go party, and the movie started. in honor of Peter, they played the trailer to "A Christmas Story", and then the movie. the movie was fantastic. jon did a great job writting and directing it, and him and vince really played their parts well. "Swingers" fans will really enjoy the little tidbits that were put into the film.

so after the movie, jon and vince came out for a little Q&A, and they were really funny and generous with their time. those guys are really fucking cool guys. after the Q&A, we all filed out, and Jon is standing at the end of my row. i'm not that clever, so i didn't want to talk to they guy, like all the other idiots, so i just turned past him and started to walk out. so behind me was Lorena, and behind her was Jon Favreau, and he followed us out to the lobby.

    it was great.

    :)

    GO sucked, MADE rules.

    by cabron

At the late show at the Alamo Harry asked us to post what we thought. Here it is: It is now clearly obvious who was "money" in Swingers. Doug Limon did Go, Favreau has now done Made. After holding both up to the perfection that is Swingers, the verdict is in. "Who's the big winner? MIKEY'S the big winner!"

    C'mon Swinger's wasn't that great....

    by henry fool

I preferred Dough Liman's 'Go' over 'Swingers' a vastly inferior movie. I think Jon Favreau's pretty talented, however and I'm hopin that this movie will surpass Swingers. It should. After all, Swingers was not a great movie. It was very funny, though, and it introduced us to some really talented actors (Favreau, Vince Vaugh and Ron Livingston.)

    Swingers, Amazing...period.

    by justoneoftheguys

Great characters, great script, well directed, great acting....most importantly there are a million lower-budget films out there that fail miserably at what this film does great, dialogue. When you don't have the big bucks the dialogue has to be on point, Favreau's script is a languid, fresh, and smooth flowing film that is rare in this talky genre. There are a million more reasons to like this film. It's just damn cool. Who would have ever thought that D-Bob would end up being the one with the talent?....

You think Go is better than Swingers? Are you on CRACK?

    by smurfette

Swingers is a great movie. Go made me "feel" absolutely nothing. There was no emotion whatsoever compared to Swingers-which is what really made Swingers special. Doug L tried to make Go "hip" with all his half-hearted "818" jokes, but it only drew attention to the fact that he was desperately trying to prove that he was responsible for the vision of Swingers (which he clearly was not). It is good to hear that Made is not attempting to be "just like Swingers." It sounds like Jon has matured as a writer and film maker and is trying to grow past the expectations set by his previous successes.
