SCOOBY DOO set reports coming in...
Hey folks, Harry here.... As you go around online today and for the next few days you will be reading set reports by several sites that visited the SCOOBY DOO sets in Australia. You will hear about really cool sets, wonderful design work and guarded comments about Scooby himself.
Warner Brothers had a nice little junket where they showed some really great online guys (Garth @ DarkHorizons, Smilin' Jack Ruby @ Chud and many others) to examine the sets and send back reports based upon their experiences there.
Already, Garth has his report up... and from the sound of things, the sets are incredibly cool. The 'SPOOKY ISLAND' set sounds like it would be an awesome experience to walk around in. They were told about Wire-Fu and Hong Kong fighting that Sarah Michelle Gellar's Daphne will do in the film.... ahem... so it seems they are Buffy-ing Daphne quite a bit, which could be fun... And there are a lot of details that would lead you to believe that .... well... SCOOBY DOO is gonna Rule!
I have no doubts whatsoever, that the trailers to SCOOBY DOO are going to look sumptious. That the worst publicity photo of the group.... we've probably already seen. That the music for the film might sound great. That there will be all sorts of positive elements to this film.
And it should also be noted that it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Matt Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr may in fact be charming and nice guys in person. Afterall, they do get parts in movies somehow.
But one thing you need to realize the entire time you read all of this coverage is that the script sucks beyond words. That no matter how pretty it may look... beneath those baubles and rhinestones is a steaming pile of worm infested feces. And when you give that type of material to someone like Lillard and Prinze.... coughwingcoughcommandercough!
I would love to be wrong on this one folks, I would. I love SCOOBY DOO dearly, but this script was just a canker. NOOOOOWWWWW, perhaps it has changed under the expert attentions of Raja Gosnell, but given his past history... there are no indications that he shepards films to higher quaility. However, it is especially nice to note that Freddie Prinze Jr is qualified to play Fred because he has all the Scooby Doo episodes on tape and watches them regularly... as do I, but ya don't see me trying out for the role of Velma, though I have to say, to get in Velma's skirt... that soft pullover... my hair styled just soooooo, anyway..
One person I was talking to about the coverage that Garth wrote mentioned suspicion about them having signed a document that forbids them from talking about certain things they saw. WELLLL, folks don't worry about whether Garth and Smilin' Jack are on the up and up about what they saw.... If they can't tell us how wonderful or shitty SCOOBY looks... that's fine, because if they really hated his design, you could feel it in the TONE of their coverage. As you read future items from them, you would feel a negativity and pessimism in their writing.
Garth's piece is quite optimistic and hopeful.... as you will find most every set report that you'll ever read to be. WHY? Because when you go to a set, the filmmakers are at their best... especially when it is the official press day. However, if Warners really wants to change the buzz on SCOOBY DOO... it'll have to begin with the film itself.... and they'll need to not only screen it... but screen towards those with questions and doubts about the project. We'll see, like I said, I hope Raja pulls it out.... I just doubt it severly.

I gotta wonder, why so protective over Scooby. I loved it as a kid and still get a retro kick when I see it now, but watch two episodes in a row and it's basically crap. I can't see a decent script ever really happenning.

I am kind of skeptical about this flick as well, Mr. Knowles. I have been a HUGE fan of Scooby-Doo since I was, like, two. And my five year old brother ( I am currently 19 years old) watches it everyday and even has a Scooby lunchbox. And I have no doubt that those sets are quite stunning, but there is something in me that says this movie will truly not only change the lovable characters into doofuses (or is that doofi?), but will be one of the greatest insults ever visited upon the generations that grew up with that cowardly Great Dane in their homes. I think that only God or a deal with Satan could save this movie projest from the cinematic black hole it is shaping up to be.

Dear King Goonie,
I know you are reading this letter, seeing as how the movie features buffy.
How does it feel to know that, the loser (Fredie P.Jr) humping slut Ms. Gellar is in this oncoming crap pile. She is, after all, your favorite thespian. You will probably be the only one in the theater, who isnt in high school or below who will see this film, you will probably be a jerkin' it too fanboy. Anytime you dare say Gellar is better than Christopher Walken again, all I got to say is Scooby do. BWAHAHAHAHAA Walken is king, and Gellar will never have anything comparable to THE DEER HUNTER, and then she will get wrinkles, possibly gain weight, and always be remembered just as that buffy chick (Kinda like the one in the movie eh?)
ps. for those of you not in the know, king goonie, ran into a Walken related talk back (The country bears one), dissing walken, and saying that they should have a buffy article instead. This is just my revenge, to hopefully teach him a lesson once and for all. -
I'm really not that juvenile, I was just thinking of a line from the Simpsons. Now onto more important matters; why would anyone want to bad mouth Chris Walken? Well, I guess there's a lot of idiots out there.

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island was actually a pretty damn good movie. I watched it with my seven year old brother, and thought it was very well made (for a straight-to-video release). The story was good, and the animation far exceeded the originals. I was glad to see that they kept the gloomy look of the original Saturday morning cartoons. From the sound of these reports, it seems like Scooby will remain the best when in cartoon form with the original (sounding) voices. They've made several other animated Scooby Doo movies since then, with much more average results.
Zombie Island has a similar setup as Ghostbusters II, with the original gang separated after a few years, then getting back together for a new adventure.
It's a good rental if you want to watch a movie with the kids. -
I have some concerns about how much this motion picture will inherit the truly innovative qualities of the source material. First of all... will the characters walk faster than their bodies move across the room, causing a sort of psedo-moonwalk (watch the cartoon... trust me..). Second, will Scooby be licking the half gallon of ice cream off his face at the beginning of the film. And third, will the main characters have whites in their eyes. Every character on that show to me seemed to be diseased with flesh-colored eyes(Hanna-Barbaritis B). Oh well. As long as there are the three obligatory clues. Look! Glow in the dark paint! Wood-chips! Footprints!
-
It sounds possibly similar to the themes in the live action. If they go that route, it's a smart move. A very funny update of the original cartoon with *gasp* great animation! Daphne's character seems definitely derived from it. Printz is still a horrible choice for Freddy!
-
better luck next time, my friend.
sorry. :) -
to check out the CGI Scooby. Rhythm and Hues did a pretty impressive job on cats and dogs, so hopefully they can pull off SD.

Why do people be hatn' Lillard? I thought he was hilarious as Brock Hudson, the spitting image of Puck, in an otherwise mediocre She's All That. And he wasn't bad in Dead Man's Curve or Scream. "We're gonna get busted man, my parents are gonna Kill me."
-
I have to say Harry's thoughts about Scooby Doo hold some of his funnist quips. When he first disscussed Matthew Lillard being cast...I fell out of my chair. He is really REALLY pessimistic about this movie. I hope he chooses to commentate on this movie becuase it is cracking me up
-
He doesn't lie, he won't exaggerate. He quite simply is a journalist and will report what he sees. Hell, he ripped Scoopy Doo a new asshole ready with some of his previous reports. And from knowing the man, he just won't. And no, this isn't a plug- just a defense of his integrity against any that would attack it.

That JP3 trailer was FANTASTIC! Or, at least the 45 seconds I just saw on that rumored commercial. Those raptors! That spinosaurus! Those pretadons! Sam Neill!!! I must see this film!!! All doubts are GONE! GONE!!! Can't wait to see all two minutes, 25 seconds of the trailer! Man, that was almost worth having to stomach an hour and a half of Survivor. God, what contrived junk. Oh well, JP3 looks FANTASTIC. If Macy doesn't like this thing, that's his fault. I am pretty darned excited. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have seen approximately 7 "The Animal" commercials today alone. Make... them... STOP!!!! Mr. User ID Indeed!, where do your Moments come from? Frum yer bluyud!
-
Stay out of this, its between me and goonie, not you. I know alot of people who like buffy, and thats not the problem. the problem is that someone said that Gellar was better than walken, and they are truly seperated by many calibres as far as skill is concerned, with walken waaaaaaay on top. If you like buffy thats fine, but I got to stand up for the man.

i'm sorry but these live action adaptations of animated shows suck royally. i'd rather see the studios do big budget animation treatments to these shows, like with pixar doing computer animation. i don't like the looks of how this is going and i don't care how much effort is put into sets and effects, this is going to be like the flintstones movie. lame lame lame!

Yeah I got to agree with the other people saying Zombie Island was good. Some complanined that it was too gruesome. But come on man, the gang finally had a case where the monsters were real. But anyway going back to the movie. I still ahve to believe that this film will be crap. It just doesn't seem put together. But I've got a question about this flick. Will it address Shaggy's ongoing weed problem? I'm serious, look how much he eats, always paranoid and thin as a rail. Plus he's stuck in a time when Ford was President so don't tell me that he ain't done some sparkage in his time. But anyway Zombie Island rocked and what's wrong with watching a kid's show for chrissakes.
This has been a liqour filled rant by Sgt.WojoJoJo -
Harry,
I certainly respect that you have held your ground with your dislike for the script for this film but ease up a little, dude. I think everyone would agree that is just a matter of time before this movie would be snatched up and made in to what would loosely resemble an old made-for-tv-movie form the early 1980s. I am not expcting much so I have something to look forward when it's a double feature on STARZ with Josie and the Pussycats. -
I smell dog poo..
-
I thought James Gunn, who wrote The Specials, did the script for Scooby Doo. If thats true then I have a hard time believing its not funny. The Specials was hilarious. I havent read it but my friend told me that his novel, The Toy COllector is also really funny.
PERSONALLY, I am NOT a Scooby Doo fan. I found the cartoon to be mind numbingly stupid and NEVER found it funny. Also, with the exception of Josie and the Pussycats and George of the Jungle there has NEVER been a good movie based on a cartoon. Flintstones? Dudley Do-Right? Mr. Magoo? Popeye? Add Freddie Prinze Jr to that list (who has NEVER appeared in a good movie) and you have a recipe for disastor. Still James Gunn is a gifted and funny writer and I'm a huge Matt Lillard fan. He was awesome in Scream and SLC Punk!. -
Okay, so I've now given my heart and soul to Jesus, because the appearance of this cinematic turd on movie screens across the world will undoubtedly signal the end of this planet.
Matthew Lillard, dressed in chaps and nipple clamps, will be riding Freddie Prinze, Jr. like he's the bucking bronco of the Apocalypse across the screen, while they take a simultaneous bowel movement on a beloved icon such as Scoob.
Can anyone explain to me how these poncy wankers continue to appear in movies? Who do they have dirt on? And when does their contract with Satan expire?
O Son of David, have mercy on us! -
OK...now I've heard everything. Horrific promo shots, a CGI Scooby (voiced by Scott Innes, the guy who replaced Casey Kasem as the voice of Shaggy), a bad script, bad casting, wire-fu...oh, hell with it. This thing sounds like yet another WB abomination. This studio is the biggest bunch of morons on the face of the earth. Good God, at this rate, they'll probably green-light the next two BATTLEFIELD EARTH movies that John Travolta and Roger Christian want to make.
-
...Scooby Doo sucks, it always did. It was an awful cartoon, a poorly animated piece of crap. Some cartoons could be turned into good movies, but for some reason, studio execs are only interested in shit like "Inspector Gadget" (which even as a toon was not really that great) or "Scooby Doo" (which sucked all the way). Why not making a film of something truly good, like "Pole Position", "Thundercats" or "Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors"?
-
I always kinda liked that one.

I can't begin to explain to you how much this movie is going to SUCK SO UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY that just thinking about it puts me in a depressive suicidal state..my god..what is this shit with Daphne doing Kung Fu? KUNG-FUCKING-FOO!?!?!? Daphne?!?!? Jesus, I can't believe their ruining that wonderful show....I swear to god, if Those Mother Rapers dare touch THUNDERCATS or TRANSFORMERS i'm gong to send them someone's testicles in a box....thank god William Hannah died before having to witness this travesty...THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Just a quick note, Scoobie Doo on Zombie Island was very enjoyable,Scooby Doo and Aliens (or something like that) was okay, and Scooby Doo and Witches Ghost was cool because Tim Curry did voiceover work in it. All three are worth catching on the Cartoon Network. And I still stand firm by the idea that Velma is a lesbian. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go get some sleep so i'll be ready for MUMMY RETURNS later today
-
Very very fast.

Look, I am pissed myself for even reading this article, but somehow I think this film could end up being one of the worst films ever. So bad that I won't ever watch it even for Kitsch value. For God's sake Harry how many scooby snacks are they giving you. It WON'T be good, It CAN'T be good or even watchable. You're happy they picked Freddie Prinze junior because he has all the episodes taped?!!!! AAAAHHHH!!!!! Listen to yourself. Please, please spend more time on anything other than this. I've already spent too much time....
-
Not sure where that came up, but I didn't sign shit the whole time there (except my mini-bar bill). And I'm actually slowly getting on the Matthew Lillard boat as I'm starting to find him pretty odd/funny. And for the talkbacker who asked, producer Chuck Roven said that they have not cast the voice of Scooby yet (I, too, had heard that it was going to be the actual voice, but who knows?). And to RightWing Dude, if I had the chance, I'd still watch "Scooby Doo" every day of the week, but just don't have time.

Matt Lillard couldnt act his way out of a nut sack...
did anyone see that "test shot" of Screech from saved by the bell as Shaggy a while back? i mean, as much as i wanna hit screech in the face with a shovel, the dude looked exactly like Shaggy in the pic...they has the wig, shirt and goatee on him, and it was perfect...and tell me when he would say "ZOINKS" it wouldnt be perfect....
bottom line, Lillard AND Screech suck bean-bags....
..and thats all i have to say about that. -
I thought the whole idea of a teenage Dangerous Liasions was pretty clever. All the actors were good too, despite the contrivances in plot.

I have to say that I'm glad Harry has recovered some sense of perspective on this film. It's interesting to note that in the past few days he has posted two articles which in which he attempts to atone for two of the lower points in AICN history. His embarassing, completely-missed-the-point, review of the orignal Mummy film was brought up in his review of the sequel. While he couldn't exactly admit that he made a *genuine* mistake, a little time brought a bit of perspective. It was good to see. On the Scooby Doo front I really think Harry wishes that he could go back in time and stop himself from posting those original stories. While not entirely backing away from the things which upset him, I think he realises that he made an ass of himself. Hey we've all said stupid things, things we regret, and then find ourselves unable to backpeddle too far lest we look like hypocrites. I think this article is as close as Harry is ever going to get to an apology. And to completely change the subject, just what in the name of God is so wrong with Mathew Lillard? He may not be the world's greatest actor, but he's not *that* bad. A competent journeyman with a flair for physical comedy and a small musical talent. Has anyone seen Love's Labour's Lost? Lillard sings, he dances, recites Shakespearean dialog and seems to be genuinely having a good time with all of it. So he's not John Cusack! So what?!? This is a movie based on a Cartoon and it stars a CGI dog. How good does he have to be?

But i will say now that that they are both horrible and always will play the same characters without ever having any variation inthier acting styles.

Lillard is a damn passable actor, don't get me wrong, but he can't be a good Shaggy. Why? Because I've wanted to screw Shaggy since forever and I'm not even a little attracted to Lillard. Geez, the fanboys get Buffy and all we get is Freddie Prinze Jr. with a bad blonde dye-job. You know, "Zombie Island" really wasn't bad. Scooby had a job as a drug-sniffing airport dog. Who would put Shaggy in charge of something like that?!

you suck ok. scooby doo rocks allright and so does inspector gadget(the cartoon). so shut up.

why would they screw up a perfecly good scooby movie by putting sarah in it?
-
I can't speak for the other people who worked on the script, but James Gunn is an excellent writer. OK, so maybe the script isn't what you were hoping for, but don't say it sucks. James Gunn's writing is COMPLETLY THE OPPOSITE of that Batman & Robin/Godzilla shit we have been getting for the last ten years. Need proof? Visit www.jamesgunn.com or go to a book store/library and look over his novel The Toy Collector or go rent/buy Tromeo and Juliet... his writing is insane.
-
Won't be that bad all! Mark my words we'll have a hit on our hands! As for the talkbacker who compared us to the "Cory's", hah! The Cory's haven't had a hit in years! Wait ummm. Okay I see your point. Anyway Scooby will be good mark my words...and don't forget SUMMER CATCH in a couple months!
-
Doing a story on the Marvel properties up for production is a great idea. How about it Harry? Or comic adaptations generally?
-
but what she does is so different from what Walken does that I don't see how they can be compared. Walken has a vast range played out over a lot of films, where SMG is just beginning her career, really. As for the person who thinks Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy) is fat, he obviously hasn't seen her. I think 'gorgeous' would be more truthful. And she is a very talented actress who has made a lot of films. *** Scooby - I don't think much of the casting. OK, it's a cartoon, but SMG was cast to attract Buffy fans rather than because she would make a good Daphne. I really don't know about the rest of the casting, but actual resemblance to the characters does not seem to have been thought about much. Any film that does not respect its source material usually bombs, so this does not bode well.
-
It'll at least be more faithful to the cartoon than "Josie and the Pussycats" was (Dammit, lay off the bish
-
Every in the talkbacks have been giving opinions on the cast, they neglected a small tidbit in the article, that made me raise an eyebrow. Kung-Fu fighting and wirework...in a Scooby-doo movie ?!?!
-
It's really tough to watch an entire marathon of Scoobie Doo cartoons. The plots and mysteries were way to retarded and once you realize that they never run into real ghosts or monsters, the fun of it just gets sucked out. When I was a kid, I always believed up until the last moment that the ghost/monster was real. Now, I get pissed off whenever Daphne and Velma start running from them when they are obviously not real. That's why I loved Scoobie Doo On Zombie Island. As long as the story meets the standard of that straight to video kids' movie, I'll be happy. Maybe a little humor a la the Brady Bunch Movie would be nice, but I think I've heard that they are not going in that direction at all. Hey, it will be marketed to the PG crowd though. What can we expect?
-
I do not understand all these people getting worked up over how stupid the Scooby movie will be. I am OLD! I remember Scooby way back when. I have turned my 5 year old son on to Scooby, and he loves it! Don't any of you remember how comforting Scooby was? Those adorable bubble gum songs, the fact that those meddlin' kids would always solve the mystery, Scooby and Shaggy's outrageously insatiable appetites...That was all just "feel good" stuff to me. I will take my son to see this movie, and you know what? I bet we will have a wonderful time (I will make sure to bring my Scooby Snacks!)
