A.I. : Translation of the Kannada on Jeanine Salla's Card! Plus the new URL it Gives You!!

Published at:  May 01, 2001 9:40:06 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with the answers to the strange writing on the back of the Jeanine Salla Card from yesterday... and it's pretty cool and weird in the traditional WEIRD A.I. Mystery that seems to never end... Here ya go...

Harry--

Indeed, the language is Kannada, but it is not a direct translation of the
English on the left.

Instead of Cybertronics/Dynatech Chair in Computational Psychology, the text
on the right translates as "God/Queen Proud Throne." Instead of Bangalore
World University we have "Bangalore World Factory." Instead of New York City
we have "New Hell." And, instead of the URL at the bottom, we have "Old
Spanish Dust."

Cheers,

Jayce

Well folks... looks like Jayce's translation led to something... check it out!!!!

Harry,

Did you check out
http://www.bangaloreworldu-in.co.nz/salla/oldspanishdust/
from the translation of the card? there is one file
there oh, and
there is a hidden link on it to someone's email
address?

I've only been following this off and on, so if this
is something that's already been discovered by a ton
of people, just ignore me.

Love your site, I've been reading since the _first_
time you put up the ID4 background!

    Puzzles within puzzles

    by darkhal0

I've been trying to keep up with this rather prolific and intricate puzzle they've created.

I may not be as up to speed as others out there, if I'm retreading old ground, my apologies.

Are you sure that the translation is exact? The last bit, "Old Spanish Dust". Is a little confusing. I thought that perhaps it was an anagram. But I haven't come up with any good matches (though the word AI could be used). I've also looked for sometime on the net in search of references to "Old Spanish Dust" and haven't found squat.

I know that with translating between languages, there are sometimes best guesses, or translations using different words. Any other possible translations?

I'm really enjoying the level of complexity they've woven into this. Very cool.

    AI

    by duke fame

When I first saw the trailer, I was dissapointed. I was hoping AI (the film) would do more than bring AI (the concept) to the masses in a friendly "Speilbergian way". But the trailer seemed a bit too cutesy to me.
BUT THEN, the game appeared, and along with it came the paranoid "us vs. the robots" messages weaved within the game-plot. That revived my interest in the film.
Then they had Dr. Ray Kurzweil on the Q&A panel, which pleased me even more. He's written a few books on the future of technology, and his latest, "The Age of Spiritual Machines" is great, albeit a bit terrifying.
I should never have doubted them.

    A.I. Producer lies at M.I.T

    by groverboy

    Hey,
I attended a press junket event at M.I.T. in Boston yesterday, where we saw the entire first scene of A.I., plus a video message from Steven S., and was attended by Producer Kathleen Kennedy and Haley Osment. There was also an amazing panel of top A.I. scientists from MIT, Rod Brooks, Sherry Turkel, Ray Kurzweil, and Cynthia Breazel, who run the A,I Lab at the MIT Media Lab. Although they admitted to having nothing to do with the film, during QA, in the audience of real students and scientists, a planted Warner Brothers employee asked about the consulting on the film by Jeanine Salla. No one knew who she was, and Kathleen Kennedy referred to the poster hanging over the chalk board that had a credit that read "Sentient Machine Therapist-Jeaniine Salla."

She said that Jeanine is great, and that her and Steven had "met Jeanine at evan's funeral." Know one knew what she meant, and she handed the mic to Haley who answered with "Jeanine worked in Post Production. So, I didn't actually work directly with her. All of my shooting was finished, and I don't get involved with Post so I never worked with her but I heard that she is great."

They scammed a room full of national reporters and MIT staff. Later, at the end of a real Q and A, "Kathy" Kennedy quickly mentioned that she would leave some of "Dr. Salla's business cards on the table after the press conference." She did, and all the students took them.
This thing is so elaborate, they have Producers lying to reporters. It was so cool, but aren't they crossing a line here?

    AI Sites

    by kentish boy

This is the best use of the web for a film, i have seen. It eclipses X-Men and Blair Witch. On the same note, has anyone managed to get in to the Anti Robot Milita site as a member? If you haven't then the answer to question 2 is: Spartacus 2.0, but of course u had already found that hadn't u? i tend to be miles behind everybody else. Anyhow, once inside there is an advert about a rally on Sun 7th may. I know this is the wrong day but u never know, i have signed up for the New York one, even though i live in the UK,just cos i am interested! Anyhow, the diatribes in the site are really worth reading and are funny. Some one has really, really thought this out to appeal to people using AICN, Dark Horizons etc

    Kubrick's fingerprints

    by homer jay

Man, this has got Stanley's fingerprints all over this. If it is indeed true that SK & Spielberg traded some 750 pages of notes about this, I'm betting this little game was a BIG part of it. My theory is that when Kubrick saw the internet begin to blossom, he saw it as a new medium that he could fuck with and do whole new things that noone had been capable of. This is elaborate, layered, and detailed to the point of being creepy. Much like most of Stanley's films.

    Spanish Dust

    by kieran

I haven't really followed the AI game too closely but, I just noticed, if you look at the four women page (http://www.familiasalla-es.ro/fourwomen.htm) you see the following description of Jeanine:

    "Full Professor, BWU-NY /
Dynatech Chair in Computational Psych / Complexity, recursion /
    Red wine, Spanish dust, family."

I guess they got sick of waiting for people to start thinking about what Spanish Dust was and printed the cards to hurry them along.

So why is Harry covering up the Liv Tyler underwhere contest that was so obviously rigged (the winner's story was about his girlfriend running off to the bathroom to throw up during Saving Private Ryan... they didn't even break up because of him sitting back and watching the movie, they stayed together another two months... wow, tough dating experience) by replacing the results with a review of the Mummy Returns? What we know

    by vineyarder

Certainly is an interesting game. A couple of things are pretty easy to figure out with some cross-referencing to IMDb.com. (As for the hard stuff, I'm glad someone has time to figure it out, 'cause I sure don't.) According to the cast list there, the only character name that appears in the game as well is Martin Swinton. In the game he's an architect, but in the movie he's a child (the actor who plays him was born in 1990). That seems to make sense given the time frames. The movie is set in the mid- to late 21st century (at least initially), the game in the mid-22nd. I'm very interested to see how much the game ends up having to do with the movie itself. Definitely ingenious and fascinating.

Yo ! Know something about "Spanish Dust" !

    by spacephil

Saw at some point that "Jeanine Salla" worked at the 'Aragon Institute of Technology.' Aragon was an old kingdom, which joined with another kingdom (I think Castille) in the 13th century through marriage of its rulers.

The new country formed was called Spain.

So what does this mean ? "Spanish dust" is probably a reference to whatever work Salla did at AIT. Question is, what's that ?

Christ, it's too easy to get caught up in this...

    More damn phone numbers

    by edwartell

If you follow the link back on the parent directory page back to Jeanine's university home page (http://www.bangaloreworldu-in.co.nz/salla/), you'll get a phone number to leave messages at (212-502-1177). If you call (and this is far from verbatim), she'll say she's not in (i.e., it's an answering machine), and if you're calling her back about her message about Evan, press 2. She says it kind of sadly. There's someone else she's waiting to hear from (forgot the name), who she invites to punch in her code number. When you press 2, she gives you another phone number (919-425-2310) to call to find out about funeral arrangements, and she emotionally implores anybody who knows anything about Evan's death to call her ("How could Evan, of all people, be killed on his boat?", or by it, or something like it). Very melodramatic and fake-sounding. If you call the second number, you get a message from Evan's mom (I think) telling you when the funeral will be and thanking you for being supportive. Then the operator voice comes on and tells you to punch in your code to access your account...and that's where I ended. After I punched in a few random 3-digit numbers, the voice said "Goodbye" and disconnected me. You take it from there.

And remember...this is the first time Spielberg's written his own screenplay since one of my favorite all time movies, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This just has to be special. But the marketing is cool too.

Look at all the rest of the promo stuff being done...

    by lobanhaki

One fact must be asserted: No major release of a motion picture is wisely done minus the marketing. It's simply not done. It's the manner in which it is done that is important. Spielberg and co. are being mysterious about this. The promo is discreet, with little actual movie footage (and this is supposed to be the trailer, not the teaser), and the internet stuff largely depends on your participation. If things are spoiled for you, it's your fault.
That the actors and producers are pretending that an actual "sentient machine therapist" named Jeanine Salla actually exists is simply brilliant, a story telling device as old as time. We know that they're not telling the truth, and they are aware of this, but in doing this, we feel no problem with going along with the joke, and so we allow a convention to be set up: that artificially intelligent machines could actually exist. While Pearl Harbor batters you senseless with explosions, imagery, and flag-waving patriotism, AI, with a few quick strokes has YOU doing much of their work for them. Some may call that manipulative, but the fact is, all they can do is invite us in. We wouldn't go along with it if we didn't sense something was there. Pearl Harbor, on the other hand, attempts to push us into it: See! The bombs fall. See! Planes fight! See! The love Triangle! I prefer the first to the latter, because it indicates that the filmmaker intends to involve us as an audience, and not just as a demographic market. So which do you want to be: The guy who fills the seat, or the person whose needs for interesting curious stuff must be met?

    Spanish dust, etc.

    by vineyarder

"Spanish dust" isn't too mysterious. I get the sense that Salla is from Spain. For one thing, her granddaughter, Laia, calls her abuela, which is Spanish for grandma. "Red wine, Spanish dust, family" is just a list of Salla's favorite things. She didn't work at AIT, she graduated from there (class of 2090).

That voice on the phone message must be Evan's wife, not his mom. His parents are dead, according to the obituary in the AIT alumni newsletter. http://www.ita-es.ro/alumnifriends.html Evan died at 76, so even with the expanded life expectancies of this future, it would be slightly odd for his parents to be alive. (The expanded life expectancies and improved health care also explain why Evan, Nancy and Jeanine look so young in their 70s.)

    by juliette

I'm just into this AI thing, but maybe someone can tell me what this means: If you go to the Official Warner Bros. Site for AI, there's this robot thinkg you can talk to. I asked it about the "Seven Words" (Cirrus, Socrates, Particle, Decibel, Hurricane, Dolphin, Tulip) and it totally avioded my question, and got all dodge-y about it. Also, it identifies Jeanine as the Sentient Machine therapist. I asked it about Evan, and once it said he was a sibling not yet created or something, and the other time it said it didn't know him, then it said he was sometimes a client on the internet....anyone wanna ponder this awhile?

  • just thought i'd clue you in on this one movie that preceeded Ridley Scott's Alien by a couple of years. It was called Star Wars. Ever heard of it? It did more to revive the sci-fi genre than Alien or Blade Runner ever did. Not to doubt the coolness of either of those two, but they didn't exactly revive a dead genre. It was already alive and kicking again by the time Alien was released (and Harrison Ford wouldn't have been in Blade Runner if it weren't for George Lucas).
