How Far Would You Go To Raise Money For A Live-Action GUNDAM Movie'

Published at:  Apr 29, 2001 10:50:52 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with something amusing, cool and in a way... Film Related! Below you'll find a whole gaggle of pics of a big... actual size GUNDAM robot that is being used to try and drum up Asian Financing for a live-action GUNDAM movie.... Apparently, according to my Brazillian Jungle God, the arms move as does the head... which is all operated from the interior. HOW FRIGGIN COOL IS THAT? Now... Imagine if someone... somewhere decided to swallow the pill and create a $100 million dollar giant robots on Earth movie... The themepark rides and toys alone would make them rich if they made it COOL ENOUGH! I'm sorry folks, I just can't get over the concept that this thing exists and is somewhere on Planet Earth... I want it for my backyard... BAD!!! Just to see birds landing on it and shitting on it... Have it grounded and watch lightning striking it... Tres Cool... Anyways... have a looksee...

For way too long, this planet has been devoid of a live-action Gundam movie. Simply the fact that tht huge and WORKING mo-fo is existing on Earth, makes living easier. Damn I hope this pulls together, I'd KILL for a Gundam live-action flick. BTW, who else likes the new look of AICN?

I'm here at AICN pretty much every day for a long time now. How the hell did I miss this?!? I'm watching The Faculty on Showtime tonight because I am bored and in love with Famke. Not 15 minutes into the movie, Salma Hayek is putting a bandage on HARRY fucking KNOWLES' hand!!! (He got it stuck in a movie projector) How come nobody told me about this? I was absolutely floored.

    I'd do the following things:

    1. Make out with Whoopi

    2. Watch the Tony Danza Biography special on A&E

    3. Masturbate with a cheese grater

    4. Belay my last

    5. I'd try to figure out what Gundam is.

    by guitarman555

And there was no mention of trying to get financing for a live-action GUNDAM movie (much as I would love one). In fact, there already was a live-action GUNDAM TV movie called G-SAVIOUR that was filmed in English in Canada and shown on Japanese TV in December of 2000 (an English language DVD of G-SAVIOUR is to be released in Japan next month). About that badass model you see pics of, that's a 1/3 scale Zeta Gundam (from the classic 80's anime of the same name and not the bastard show GUNDAM WING) and it took 7 years to build near Okayama, Japan. As far as I'm aware, it was built by a big ZETA GUNDAM fan and has no relation whatsoever to getting financing for a live-action film. The Japanese are just crazy about giant robot models, especially considering that the original MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM started the modeling craze there 20 years ago. The feasibility of a full blown theatrical GUNDAM movie seems weak even in Japan seeing as how the latest GUNDAM spinoff series, TURN A GUNDAM, got mediocre ratings on television.

    Gundam vs. Gunhed

    by weird v2.0

I knew it! It was real! I saw years ago a japanese comic-based mechas' VHS with lots of guns, and I've spent ten minutes searching on the IMDB data base... and finally I found it!. It looks awful. Well, if finally there's a Gundam movie (hope so!), I'd like it not to look like Gunhed.

Could be cool, but would it be?

    by radd

Any movie _could_ be cool. Movies about giant robots have a lot of potential to be good...but look at Gundam lately? There's been a lot of good Gundams in the past, but what have we got now? Everyone is all gooey over Gundam Wing, but well...why? It's the Backstreet Boys in overdone robots with little plot and weak characters. If Bandai pulled together a live action Gundam movie, I'd rather wait until they got out of this phase of thinking.

If they did something more along the lines of the original series, War in the Pocket, or Stardust Memories, THEN I'd be all for it. But 'live action' doesn't neccisarily mean 'good'. It'd be cool to see some real looking giant Gundams and Zakus, but could movie makers make it look good, and make a good movie to fit them into? If it was just a bunch of CG eye-candy with weak characters and a dull plot, count me out.

This is just the voice of pessimism, though. This certainly COULD be the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Hmm, speaking of live action giant robots, I wonder what's up with Mikazuki, haven't seen a thing since the trailers...

    by treiza k.

Overload...pleasure overload...this could be great *if* it was done right. I hope someone picks up the tab...And of course, Gundam Wing was the Backstreet Boys in mecha. That's part of its whole appeal (well, for moronic fangirls like me, anyway).

    Uhh... no.

    by darkzero

Everything Guitarman555 said was true, except for Turn-A mediocre ratings. If I remember right, it actually did pretty well, and G-Saviour, a slew of new PS2 Gundam games, and several new DVD releases of the Gundam series have come after it, so Gundam fandom in Japan has not died by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's quite massive right now.

Also, there already is a Gundam theme park ride, it's called "Gundam: The Ride" in a theme park in Japan (I forget which one). It's pretty much a Gundam version of Star Tours, with a civilian vessel accidentally ending up at A Bao A Qu (the site of the last battle of the original series), and two guys in GMs helping them out.

Oh, and one more thing... from what I've heard, the guy that made the giant 1/3 scale Zeta Gundam from the pictures actually wasn't a fan of Gundam or model kits at all. He just wanted to build a giant robot, saw the Zeta Gundam, and pretty much thought "Oh, that looks cool, I'll use that design". It's an insane story, but from the Japanese site that originally posted the images, it's true.

Thanks for the new pictures, guys. The original ones from many months ago kinda sucked.

Other than that, a live action
Gundam movie would kick major ass.
    Unfortunately, the cost would be
    astronomical considering the whole
thing would have to be CG. And if
you don't think CG's the way to go, then check out a little MST3K
    reject called Robot Jox starring
Gary 'Alien Nation TV Show' Graham. Absolute piece of shit
even though it had that Cosby chick's naked ass in it(don't ask me her name, I can't remember).
Don't worry Harry, as soon as I
get that spare 20 or 30 million

    every midwest militia, I'll send

    High Suck Factor

    by magicaspar

I like Gundam. I have only seen Gundam W becasue of the lack of access (No DVD...please let my birthday come sooner!!). And I love the battles between the Gundams and OZ/Treize/Zechs. However, this looks like it would suck beyond Battlefield Earth. One reason: cash. You need serious cash just to make the Gundams look as decent as the anime. The ones in the pics look ok, but pale to the detail of the anime. Plus, you need massive CGI work for something like this. Two: Studios. Studios are merging together to make huge blockbusters (Good in most regards) adn the movies that have done this seem fine successes (Another good). However, I don't think any companies will bite on this line. One is the licencing issues (I believe Bandai owns that), Two is the sheer cost, and three is they won't turn a profit. This is a movie or males and fanboys (and girls...got to love the fangirls!!). This is not a movie for females (unless they are brought in as dates of said males/fanboys/fangirls [lesbian fangirls!!!]. So, bottom line is: wothout major cash, this will suck. This is one problem number one in the equation. So, while I would love to see this movie take off, don't count on it!

A Gundam live action CG movie already exists

    by sdgundamx

I got to see the first edit of it. It sucked royal blue balls. There were very few fight scenes (because the CG costs so friggin much to do) and the story was godawful. Plus it was readily apparent the studio that did the CG didn't know how to animate human characters. In the anime all the mobile suits move fluidly, like they are an extension of the pilots. In this movie they were more like Battletech mechs -- slow and lumbering.

Last I heard, the production company that did this wasn't even going to release it, that's how bad it was. Thank God. Watching the movie was painful for a die-hard Gundam fan such as myself.

Other posts on this board are right -- a live action Gundam movie could NEVER make back what they would have to spend to make it look even "decent."

    Reply to Talkback

  • Good things never come from Hollywood getting their hands on a foreign property that is popular beyond belief everywhere but the states. The more money they put into it the worse it would be. They would keep fucking with it to "protect" their investment, when in reality they would just be destroying any chance of having something good come from it. How easy would it be to have a Gundam movie be a success? Live action mecha has never been done on a large scale before, so all you would have to do is make the trailler look great and people would trample each other getting in to see it. It's not like they wouyld have to watch out for the other fifteen mecha action films that summer. Well at least not for the first film.

Also notice that I said MECHA, and NOT mech. Mech is a term created and used in the American game Battletech, where as Mecha is the japanese slang term for any mechanical vehicles or items (not just big robots). Sorry to sound like a picky fanboy for once, but this has been a huge pet peeve of mine for many years, and now with the anime boom on Toonami it has started to grow again.

Oh and Ipecac Jack Cartoon Network is going to be showing the original Gundam series sometime this year, so you won't have to endure Gundam Wing forever. The only problem I am sure will come of this is that new Gundam fans (younger GW fans) will not like this "old" series, and there will be a huge split in American Gundam fandom into two factions, the true Gundam fans, and the new fans who really only like the slick style and gimicks of the newer non-U.C. Gundam series. Plus there is nothing wrong with Dragon Ball. Popular or not it is a great show.

    Nyah! Sweet Mother of

    by twister10

Hah, I just finished watching GW, so this is pretty funny...Oh yeah, right, time to attempt to make some sense. Okay, to begin with, Hollywood would never cough up the cash. They're just stupid like that, perhaps Hollywood is allergic to an amazing, mind-blowing idea like this. Second off, it's probably better that they are allergic to it, considering that if a studio did get its greedy claws on it, they'd probably completely screw it anyway.

And third, Gundam Wing is not the bastard child of the series. That title would belong to Gundam X....eh..::shiver:: Wing actually has an interesting story line, great characters (although I disagree with the pilot's young ages, aw hell who cares, they're bishounens!), and strong, thought-provoking themes. It's AC timeline is a turnoff for some, but that's their loss. Sure, it's aimed at the kiddies, but half the stuff goes right over their heads anyway. A good deal of high school and college-aged students enjoy it also. As for the split when Toonami airs 0080 and 0083, I think that this will only happen with the younger kids. Once again, these are the ones who grew up with thinking Pokemon is the central figure of anime (dear God, help us all), however older GW fans should adapt to the change well...there are some real gems in the series...As for me, I can't wait for Turn-A to be translated...

Oh yeah, and for you non-anime talkbackers: run, run fast, this board is about to be taken over....

    by gary2012

Actually with their more modern animation I think that 0080 and 0083 would do quite well, but Toonami isn't showing them (or maybe they are later, I haven't heard). They are showing the original 1977 Mobile Suit Gundam series. I don't think that many of the GW fans not already familiar with true Gundam will be able to get past the (by todays standards) ancient looking animation style. I know people that love Macross Plus, but can't get into Macross because of the older looking animation style. Of course I never let them live it down, but that's a different story. Anyway, that Patlabor image that the poster above brought up is incredible. Wow, to have a gundam movie looking like that would be great. Oh and to another poster above, why would it be bad to have CG effects in a live action film, but great to have an all CG film? Personally I think that photorealistic all CG films are very wasteful, and quite pointless. Why strive to recreate what can more easily, more quickly, and far more cheaply be done with real actors? Final Fantasy took so long to finish, and now it looks like all that time and effort might have gone into creating another blah sci/fi action film, rather than a movie worthy of the name Final Fantasy. I'll wait to see it before making my final judgement of course, but I am not holding out too much hope based on the trailers.

This site needs to talk about this show, its been on Toonami for a few weeks, there's only 13 episodes of it and the DVD of the first 4 episodes comes out in June. I hope Sunrise makes a second season, I need more Big O. Anyone else watched it?

Yeah superboy, others HAVE noticed the show; I not only watch it (it's on in 15) but I'm taping it and might even get the DVD. I must say, the show has surprised me... I was figuring it would just be another 'Giant Robo' retro-kitsch-fest, but the combo of Blade Runner, Batman TAS, Bond, and (of course) giant honkin 'bots is irresistable. Also about Gundam: The Ride- one of my issues of Hobby Japan has some promo pics of it including one of some people posed in a 1:1 scale gundam hand they apparently have in the lobby to give a sense of size... comparing that pic to these it is obvious that a full-scale gundam would be that much more impressive. I of course will be building one as soon as I win the Powerball; I'll keep y'all posted...

And go to www.toonamiarsenal.com in the download section for the original open to the series. The creaters are BIG fans of Queen. Remember the Flash Gordon theme? Cracked up when I saw it. But I keep on om HD and play it now and then. With the new interest from the US fanbase now Sunrise might make another season!

like people have said CG has come a long way - any lord of the rings fan can tell you that or any final fantasy fan can tell you that - if they can animate battles of completely CG armies and make them look as incredibly realistic as they are then i think they can handle some robot mecha action - hell with the cg technology that babylon 5 used a couple years ago to animate huge space battles of fleets of fighters for a TV SERIES !! then i think they could put together a movie quite easily - personally i'm working on the designs for a pneumatic 2 to 3 story gundam that uses direct pilot vurtual interface - you make a fist it makes a fist etc.. wish me luck

Superboy- I agree completely. Maybe Harry is too busy flying back and forth to Hollywood to watch Cartoon Network, and we all know Hercules is too busy watching Buffy. I personally MUST see the battle against all the freaky 'megadeuces' coming out of the ocean... WTF is up with the one w/the giant, off-center head?!? Yeek. As for the comment of Lord_Satorious, yes, it has already been pointed out that it is a 1:3 scale model... Gundam Lounge I know for a fact had pix of this puppy up about 3 months ago, w/links to the original japanese-language site and mentioning it was something some guy built in his backyard and that it was only 1:3 scale... so I think this is a case of someone pulling Harry's chain. Unfortunately. There is nothing in this world I would like better than a live-action Gundam movie... NOT Robotech [or Macross, for the purists out there]. Though I loved the mecha in it, the whole Minmay/yodeling at the aliens crap hurt my brain. The last thing we need is a live human Basura wailing at us in a red Valkyrie :::shudder:::

The live-action Gundam film is called "G-Saviour". It was the capstone of Gundam's 20th birthday "Big Bang" celebration. It's a wonderful combination of live-action and CG that really shows of the spirit of Gundam. Running close to 90 minutes, the main mecha is only seen four times. It's powerful. Gundam isn't about gundams. Rather, it is about the pilots. It is about the people.

I love gundam. I've only seen Gundam Wing and clips of the original Gundam, but I watch it for two reasons: the drama & action. Also, Gundam Wing is not the bastard Gundam show! As soon as Toonami shows the original Gundam, i'm going to record all of the episodes.
I am working on a script for fun, but it is mainly based on Gundam Wing. If any one would like a copy of it e-mail me at wardstex@hotmail.com . I've written more on paper and need to type it up. Gods only know how much they blew on making this prototype mech, which is marginly functional. But its too small, its close, but still too small. They got least get it to be 40 feet tall to match the cartoon's true size. but still its nice see a small scale one you can get INTO. :)

ok...yeah it's rather cheezy looking, but it moves!...that's pretty cool....and i do think they could now make a really nice liveaction Gundam movie....like what was said about B5, and it started back in the early 90's....look how far we've come with CGI since then!.....

and i have to say this: i do not consider Big O anime....i'm not bashing it....what i've been able to see is pretty good....but it looks like Batman on acid....not true anime style!!.....
