News on THE SEED OF CHUCKY!!!

Published at:  Apr 29, 2001 9:07:28 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with some news on THE SEED OF CHUCKY that our buddy site, JoBlo, came up with! They did a great job talking to Don Mancini and here's the tidbits he sent me.... Now I have one thing in particular to add here... What the hell is Stacey "I don't like Horror Films" Snider doing in charge of UNIVERSAL "We Made Our Name On Horror Films" STUDIOS? Sigh...

Hey Hares:

Our horror movie man Arrow from Arrow in the Head (CLICK HERE) had a chance to interview the creator and screenwriter of all the CHILD'S PLAY movies yesterday, Don Mancini, and got many cool tidbits out of his exhaustive interview. The "scoopy" stuff includes:

1) Stacey Snider, head of Universal, basically "doesn't like horror movies" and nixed "Seed of Chucky" (which was supposed to be part 5 of the series). She's the same person who 86ed Zombie's HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES

2) Right now, they're thinking about shopping the series off to another studio, but Universal hasn't given them the right to do so yet, as they did for Zombie (lawyers and agents are involved as of now)

3) "Seed of Chucky"- the script Universal turned down, was gonna play more as a "gross out comedy like American Pie" than a horror film

4) The script basically had Chucky and Tiffany having a "baby doll", who was confused about his/her sexuality. Chucky was gonna try to make him a man and teach him how to kill, while Tiffanny tried to make him dress up and be a girl, a sort of parody of the “Father Knows Best” family sitcom

5) There's also a "Hannibal"-Chucky parody idea which Don has been thinking about, but nothing has been presented to the studio as of yet. It would "focus on Chucky’s only surviving victim who is bent on revenge...where in Hannibal it was pigs, this character would feed Chucky to a pack of ravenous toy poodles." Don himself, is likely to direct part 5, if ever it comes around to being made (his directorial debut).

Anyway, the whole interview could be found here:

    LAST!!!!

    by chen_san!

Chucky should have stayed dead in the Nineties...the second film was a piece of shit. Hell, at least they are giving up on the film trying to be scary. But, is upping the camp factor on purpose really that good an idea? Batman and Robin anyone?

Jeeeeez, what has happened to Chucky??

    by babi

Why can't a movie like Child's Play (The first one) be made again? I'm not talking about the series going back to a movie as good as part 1, they've done a good job ruining the series. It's too late for that. I'm talking about making a movie about "a killer doll" or another idea as ludacris as that and somehow manage to scare the shit out of everyone. Is there anyone who can honestly say that they weren't surprised at how good Child's Play (The first one) was? Did it not surpass every expectation you could have for a killer doll movie? Please Holywood, scare us again!!?

    Fuck Stacey Snider!

    by psyclops

Sorry to get lewd and obnoxious right off the bat... but I can't stand the woman. When Moriarty pointed out her comments on the difference between Ridley Scott's Hannibal and Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses.... well, she pretty much made the top of my hate list. How can this woman be in charge of a studio? Is she going to nix all genre films all together?! Or will she allow the bloodless blockbuster peices of shit like 'The Mummy' and 'Jurassic Park 3' to become the foundation of all Universal horror projects. Man, that would really suck ass. Stacey Snider... I can totally see you turning Universal into a studio with it's balls cut off. Thanks alot you stupid bitch.

    'Bride of Chucky' kicked ass!

    by psyclops

Okay,... I loved the first 'Child's Play' film and when 'Bride of Chucky' was released I walked into the theater expecting the worst movie of 1998. But by the time the ending credits hit the screen... I was grinning like a total geek. It was funny. So funny, that when the infamous doll "sex scene" took place, I was almost rolling down the aisles in hysterical laughter. It was mindless fun... pure horror entertainment! It wasn't the greatest horror/comedy of all time (that title will always go to 'Evil Dead 2') but it was a fun ride with some decent thrills and some great laughs! Believe it or not, it left me waiting for another sequel. I really hope that another studio will save this movie. Why would Universal want to hold onto the property if it has no intentions of producing it?

    Don't fuck with the Chuck

    by ashfett

I liked the first Child's Play, thought 2 and 3 sucked and absolutely loved Bride of Chucky. As others said, it was hysterical. It took that ridiculous title and ran with it. Kudos to Mancini, who amazingly after the crap he wrote for the first two sequels, seemed to be newly inspired playing it for fun. It was just so funny to have Chucky be such a full character in the film who had these huge conversations all of the time, where he came off as some sort of homicidal Al Bundy. And I don't think it's a fluke, or that they would go back to taking it seriously (I'm all for horror played straight, but at this point the Child's Play series is not where I look for such things, and comedy seems to work much better for Chucky). Listen to the very entertaining commentary on the DVD between Mancini, Jennifer Tilly and Brad Dourif where they talk a lot about what Seed of Chucky was going to be at the time. They also mention tons of jokes from Bride that were cut. Two of my faves:
Tiffany:"If they make a movie out of our story, I hope I'm played by Julia Roberts!"
Chucky: "I hope I'm played by Brad Dourif!"
    Tiff: "Who's Brad Dourif?"

And after Chucky kills John Ritter he was going to say "Sorry Jack! Three's a crowd!"
(come on! you gotta love a joke that self references both John Ritter's most famous role AND the ad campaign for Child's Play 2!)

    by robinp

They shuffle "Jason X" a film that previewed really well, from April 13 to August 17, then pull it to "sometime in 2002". And this is the studio that Freddy built !

Oh come on guys Stacey is a nice Jewish girl...

    by bari umenema

In over her head but she's cute and sassy and sexy and pretty and perky and looks great in tight blue jeans and a turtleneck plus she knows all the right restaurants to have lunch at and she knows how to flirt with the male executives which is how she moved up the ladder at Universal and before that at Tristar so if you want to be pissed at somebody be pissed at Congress for calling her to testify before that ratings committee last year on R-rated movies. Too much violence and gore will make you lose your mind as will too much Talkback.

    The Begining of the End

    by thephantomcat

With so many women heading major studios I am afraid for the motion picture industry. The fact that it these dominating woman think they get to pick and choose what movies THEY want to watch and not the movies the THEIR AUDIENCE wants just shows how they don't understand the point of genre pics like Chucky and House of 1000 Corpses. I think that this calls for some action. ********DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW WE CAN E-MAIL HER AND LET HER KNOW HOW WE FEEL?********

I'm not saying send her hate mail, but as many people who can need to speak up. Aren't you guys tired of groups like the Christian Coalition and old senators looking for a good campain platform telling us what movies we can watch? I know I am.

********SOME ONE HERE HAS GOT TO KNOW HOW WE CAN BE HEARD!!!******** I refuse to be told that I don't know how to watch movies without going home and acting them out on other people. If that was the case then everyone would be running around in togas killing people "Gladiator" style or eating people alive a la "Hannibal."

Let's talkbalk to someone who needs to hear it. (I'll be stepping off of my soap box now.)

Wasn't Bride of Chucky rather profitable?

    by wesley snipes

It's not like the Chucky series is particularly gruesome (especially the modern ones), so why kill a show that could make you some solid bucks? "If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense." :)

    Must See these films

    by machinehead

If this, Jason X or House with 10,000 Corpses ever come out we, as loyal genre must pay our hard earned cash and watch them at the cinema. If they all make money, Studios will do what they always do, make more of the same. If we let these films die Stacey Snider will have been right.

And we shouldn't let that ever happen.

    poor old Stacey

    by oldblueeyes

Seems to me that poor old Stacey is getting back at the films that made her life a social nightmare. When she had noone to hold her hand at the scary bits. In my opinion we need someone to re-vitalise the horror industry, especially at the source that is Universal. Find a strong confident woman who actually dated when she was younger and get 'Seed of Chucky' into production. This would never have happened in England with the Hammer productions.

Well guys, this is the best I could do as far as finding a way to get in touch with her. I've placed a dash before each line break:

    City Plaza, Building 2160-
Universal City, Ca 9160- Let's try to get a hold of this feminazi a tell her that her days at Universal are numbered. Damn credit hogger.

    Yeah your right

    by movieplex

Let's face it stacey you have n't
made sound business decisions lately Rob zom,s 1000 corpses movie was quite cheap to make and
could have made it's money back
at the theaters and especially after sales like video and hey you would have a good return from
an inexpensive movie.Bride of chucky on the other hand was a hit
that at the time a lot of people liked and it's follow up would have been a hit too but your refusal is like cutting your nose to spite your face. But with the
amount of money you poured into that Pussycats movie has totally
backfired it flopped in the states
and it will take nearly a year to even reach its budget back in aftersales but hey you know what your doing I mean you are bringing
that french horror film over despite the fact that it will be
harder to sell to your average
movie goer perhaps if you tried for the grand slam and release
corspes give the nod to seed and
get them to self promote each other and give life to an otherwise stagnant film genre, but then what do I know?
I'm just a dude and your a sucessful movie executive but then again I don't have any major flops on my resume.

Please let this franchise die now.....

    by silentbob x

I'm sorry but with the exception of the first Child's Play, the
entire series of Chucky films sucked like a mighty vaccuum cleaner. Oh, no, a 2 ft. doll is
coming after me!! What will I do?
Two words for ya: Field Goal.
Didn't the box office of 'Bride of
    Chucky' teach Mancini anything?
Horror movies are on the wane, I'm
sad to say as parodies such as
Scream and Scary Movie have dulled
their once sharp edge and exposed
    their repetitive plot holes and
    inconsistencies. And if you don't
think that horror movies are going
down fast, then check out this
    weekend's newest offering, The
    Forsaken. Snootch to the Nootch.

    Corporate Thinking

    by wee willie

Gee Whiz, we have a profitable franchise on our hands, guaranteed to make at least thirty million in theaters and the same on video, but LET'S NOT DO IT because the head of the studio 'doesn't like horror movies'??? The Chucky franchise ceased to be a horror franchise after part three -- it turned into horror/comedy franchise. What's Dimension's biggest grossing movie? Scary Movie - a horror/comedy. Nice move Universal. Real nice move! I hope you enjoy counting all the money you DON'T make when New Line or Dimension pick up this series.

    CORPSES SUCKS!!!!

    by mike fury

I don't know any of these details about this CHUCKY sequel, but let me tell you -- Rob Zombie's movie SUCKS!!!! It completely blows. I saw House of 1000 Corpses at a recruited screening in Sacramento. It was just fucking awful, and I love horror movies. Bad acting, terrible direction, not a chance of succeeding. I think the quality of the movie is the real reason Universal dumped it.

    Bride of Chucky Sucked

    by idol_one

I can't believe people actually enjoyed that film. I thought the first Child's Play was bad ass. Very intelligent, and actually kind of spooky. Two and three were more funny, but still had a similar flavor. Bride of Chucky is without a doubt the weakest of the four, and shouldn't even be considered a horror movie. I can't believe so called fans of the series actually enjoyed that piece of absolute crap.

    Jesus CRAP!!!!

    by josh_m_nileski

    Two facts about me:
    1) I'm not a huge fan of horror movies. Some I love, some I like, some I dislike, some I hate.
    2) I never talkback. I had to sign up just to post this. So you know I'm pissed.

I don't know Stacey Snider personally, but she really chaps my ass. When I lie awake at nght and dream of maybe, possibly, someday being allowed to make movies, if a horror movie even wanders near my thoughts, I know that there is one only studio at which I would want to make it: Universal. Why? Because Universal has history. They're responsible for the Universal Monsters. Sure, they're seen as cheesy kid's stuff nowadays, but, once upon a time, they were (with the exception of Nosferatu and some other truly frightening expressionist films) the original horror movies. They were scary and they inspired a generation of horror nuts. That generation inspired the next generation. Then, that generation inspired this generation. The people doing horror now will inpsire the generation sitting arond reading Fangoria and dreaming about gore. And me. What horror movies turn my crank? Well, some of the titles that pop up are "Bride of Frankenstein," "Psycho," "Army of Darkness," and "The Frighteners." Who made those movies? Universal. And there's probably a thousand more Universal horror movies I'm forgetting. So, what? Is over seventy years of tradition going to stop? Just because one dingy broad (Do I feel comfortable referring to a woman I've met and who never personally did anything to me a "ding broad?" After that "Hannibal" quote, yes. Yes I do.) "doesn't like horror movies?" I'd said it before and I'll say it again, "Jes-us CRAP!!!!!"

this series went wrong years ago

    by elmstreetkid

such a shame, the original is a masterpiece of modern horror. sure, Chucky looks like a goof now, but back in '88, minus all the lame wise-cracks, he was scary. Part 2 and 3, were awful, "Bride" had moments, but why continue to veer to camp, does ANYONE else wanna see a return to the horror-feel of the original. Personally, i'm sick of all this "post-modern-ironic" garbage.
