DMANN Reviews Tonight's X-FILES!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Sweeps started last Thursday, and my pal Dmann has stepped forward to help review the deluge of new episodes we’re getting. Sorry, X-Fans: he seems less than thrilled about tonight’s installment of the Mulder & Doggett Goodtime Hour. Proceed with caution.
X-Files episode 8.18 : Veinen
by Dmann
O.K. so.....Mulder isn’t dead, he’s just sort of hanging around, and Scully is pregnant, and JEEBUS, this show is hard to follow if you aren’t Die Hard. I’ll try and muddle through that.
So, anyhow, There’s a pretty narsty frying of a oil rig worker along with some generally psychotic behavior. Back at the FBI base, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) decides that it’s an X file, and in a wonderful little bit of TV magic, he suddenly appears at the oil rig BEFORE grumbling, cranky, disbeliving agent Doggett(Robert Patrick). Sort of like how he was able to just requisition with no interference a half track to get to the Antarctic station in the movie, we aren’t really clear on how, but lets move on before we start to think how improbably that a guy who is dead, and always in trouble can requisition a chopper ride out to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.
Once Doggett and Mulder are on the oil rig together, they basically trip and slip all over each other, with Scully radioing back to them, giving them the important points of investigation. GASP, they have alien virus in the oil! Oh dear, how ever will we manage to fight this? Blow some shit up and do what appeared to be a pretty expensive high fall/CGI composite ultra deluxe superduper chromakey shot? SURE, why not? I mean, it is the last of the Duchovny episodes, or is it? (cue goofy ass tinkly piano music)
Gillian Anderson is there for the sole reason of talking on the telephone, and arguing with the NEW disbelieving boss type guy (James Pickens, Jr.), whom is necessarry because the old one, Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), now believes the conspiracy, and the FORMULA MUST BE PRESERVED, DAMNIT!!!
Boy, if this is what they are doing for X-files these days, they should just let the damn thing die.
Give this episode 2 and a half stars, just because they put in the old school high fall stunt. Other than that, its nothing to miss the Sopranos for, thats for damn sure.

Oh well, I'll probably watch it anyway.

How shitty has this show gotten since mulder came back. I loved the guy untill this season but now he's like this smirking cancerous limb. CUT HIM THE FUCK OFF!!!! Here's hoping scully's baby is actually chris walkens' love child.

So, let me get this straight, Scully is pregnant with a baby and
by i87d
Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who goes around saying to pregant people "You'd better get an abortion for the betterment of society," but in Scully's case - A) not knowing who the father is, or even if there is a father in the first place and B) knowing the baby may in fact be not of this world - i think even Dick Cheney would have to admit that an abortion in this case could be excusable, if not encouraged. Who has a baby under such circumstances? (not including the Virgin Mary)
Does she really not know who the father is? And has she said why the heck she's going full term with it when all signs point to "alien baby"? Just curious... -

First of all, I'd really rather not hear anymore reviews from DMann. His comments about the X-Files betray the fact that he is not in fact an x-files fan, and if we can have Herc, a die hard fan of buffy, give orgasmic reviews of Buffy every week, then why can't we have a die hard X-Files fan review X-Files every week? i'm tired of reading nothing but negative reports concerning the X-Files. I'm all for people being entitled to their opinions, but I know that there are a lot of people out there who still love the X-Files, and we're starting to get tired of hearing from no one but non-fans who go on about how crappy and boring the show is.
second of all, all of you people who used to be fans of the show and now think it is stupid and pointless: are you not paying attention? There have been some great things happening this season. We've had the aliens, the black oil, Krychek, conspiracies...I'll admit things got a little slow and embarrassing on the show last season, but i've been lured back in this season because Chris Carter has finally returned to what made the series interesting back in the old days. While some of you may just not be down with what the show is doing, I think there are a great many 'fans' out there who are just too caught up in the current fad of hating the X-FIles to notice all the great things going on this season. Pay Attention!
And for God's sake, will one of the true X-Files fans out there get ahold of an episode or two a day early and write some decent, orgasmic reviews. This is still a great show, and it deserves some positive light. -
Tonight's show was a good one (just like it used to be) and Mulder being there makes it even better. I still say that with Mulder's contract ending, they need to cancel the show and make movies. If they keep going and write Mulder out somehow, what will how will they bring him back in the films? The show could still be entertaining but the big picture is Mulder, he IS the X-Files. You can't make Buffy without Buffy, and you can't make an X-Files without Mulder.

I have not watched the X-Files from the beginning. I am not a die hard fan, yet I more or less know what's going on. I basically stopped watching the show after the post-movie season, which I think was probably the BEST season I've seen. I think the concept just got old. They stopped raising the bar and raising the stakes. They really forgot about the mythology. I have since watched the show off and on, when I knew a particular episode would be important to the over all story. My problem this season was that the only thing that happened was that Scully became the believer and the new guy the dis-believer. Big deal. But since Mulder has got back, MAN!! This show is ROCKIN'!! And it's all thanks to character interaction. Robert Patrick KICKS ACE!!! Tonight's ep. was exciting and fun!! Mulder finally got FIRED!!! In other words, it will be hard for him to fight the conspiracy without his unlimited gov. resources. If Scully goes too, then that means Earth is now more exposed to aliens than ever. I think the show should continue, but instead of just 2 agents, have a team of agents. Really play up character interaction. Oh, and maybe I missed something, but I thought they said the baby was Mulder's, but Scully said that was impossible?? Like I said, I don't follow as close as I should. Tonights ep. 3 out of 4 stars.
-
In the same episode where they suggested the baby might be Mulder's, by way of a flashback in which Mulder agrees to donate sperm to artificially insemanate Scully, they also show how the attempted impregnation was unsuccesful, which makes her pregnancy even more mysterious.

Geez, this episode was GREAT. For "diehard" fans it connects back to old episodes making the fact that this show is still on the air at all feel worthwhile, and it had an AWESOME twist. I FUCKING HATE Director Kersch, but he throws in interesting curveballs, like (SPOILER) Mulder getting kicked out of the FBI. I didn't expect that. I thought he had it realistically coming to him for YEARS, but I didn't expect them to DO it. And so Mulder gets there first. BIG DEAL. You don't know WHEN Doggett left. It's perfectly reasonable that Mulder up and left right away, while Doggett took his time to get out there assuming that he was the only one going. Who cares? I sometimes disagree with Herc's reviews (mostly only his review of Three Words) but, at least he gives a point by point. This reviewer seems like he's already hated the show for years and is being forced to watch it. I like a *bit* more objectivity than that in a review.
-
I doubt he got out on that rig using FBI resources, just as I doubt those were FBI snowpants he warmed Scully's gooey, naked body with down in the Antarctic. Anyways, this show is back on track, not as great as the 2nd-3rd-4th seasons, but damn good. Good to the point that I'd get seriously bummed if my VCR screwed up and it didn't tape while I was at work, like it would have tonight. Thankfully, I was able to leave late, so I was able to catch it as it aired. Back to the show's qualities. Doggett. He is stellar; last week when he pinned Mulder against the wall and yelled at him like a madman? Wow. And the tension between those two is great, as is the Scully-Pregnency mystery, though they better not disappoint with the outcome. As for Mulder's being booted from the FBI...could be interesting. He could become like a Krycek, fightin' The Man from the underground. Though they wouldn't have many episodes to work with it. Even if they do go on into another season, is Duchovney going to be willing to make the guest appearances like he did this year? Doubt it. And an X-Files completely absent of Mulder just doesn't seem right; even in the portion of this year sans Mulder he was still a factor, that's why it worked, that and Doggett's ass-kicking. My vote is for them to end it this year with a satisfying but incomplete mythology resolution, go on with Scully and Mulder and Doggett and Skinner and, what the hell, let that new girl Reyes tag along too, she seems to have potential, and bring the whole overriding X-Files plot to some sort of conclusion in the movies.

I know this doesn't really relate to this episode (Aussies have to wait 'til next week to see this one), but I've been all around the X-Files sites and am desperate. In the 'Medusa' episode with the killer seawater, there was a stern-looking black scientist chick that goes down the tunnel with Dogbert. Can anybody PLEASE tell me the actor's name and what shows she's been in? I can't find a cast list for the ep. ANYWHERE on the net, and I KNOW I've seen her a million times before! It's driving me crazy! PLEASE help!
Getting back on track, I love Patrick as Dogbert, but the ep.s so far this season seem sorta uneven. WTF was with that one with the guy that crawled up people's arses? Did they not even HAVE an ending or explanation? I know they used to rush the endings out a bit in the 'old days', but this was the most frustrating and annoying ending EVER. Aaaaaarrrrrrggghhh! -
There is absolutely NO chemistry between Mulder and Doggett! And I'm not talkin' smoochy, lovey dovey kinda chemistry. These guys are supposed to hate each other in this episode and there are NO sparks AT ALL flying between them. And this was such a crappy exit for Mulder from the X-Files. You're trying to tell me that he's just gonna let the X-Files be taken away from him like that?! That he's just gonna walk away from the office that was his passion and REASON FOR LIVING?! And what about the group that has said on MORE THAN ONE OCCASION that they don't want Mulder fired from the FBI because it's easier for them to control him if he's in charge of the X-Files. Huh? What about them? I know most of 'em got toasted by aliens but you're tryin' to tell me that none of 'em are left? This show has taken a turn for the worse. Too many key players vying for the limelight. If Duchovny wants to leave let him. But Reyes will NEVER be able to replace Scully. Season 5 should have ended it. Oh well, I guess this happens to all good shows. They end up in the toilet eventually.

That second part was quite a good finale. David Warner having his final moment with that kid he beat in the first part. Nice.
Looking forward to the next one...
oh yeah--X files.
I like it.
Mulder's back. -
None of the previous commenters seem to understand what this episode was about. They toyed with animosity between Mulder and Doggett out of necessity but people this was a passing of the torch. Mulder's only back to say goodbye. Doggett saw with his own eyes the black oil oozing outta that guy, and saw that hispanic guy he was forced to at least sorta bond with get radiated. Doggett now knows, no matter how much a lunatic he thought Mulder was, that there's a serious problem here. So yeah he's a skeptic but he has the director's ear, and he might be the one who can bridge the gap of scepticism and outrageous conspiracy theories. Maybe. But not too soon to insure at least one season. It's obvious that Chris Carter's hoping to build up to an ending with X-Files that will be a bang and not a whimper. I thought from the episode 'Deep Throat' that eventually Mulder would get that position. It is possible that will still happen. I foresee in future episodes that Duchovny will return in occasional cameo roles so Mulder can point Doggett in the right direction, and of course Doggett won't know whether to believe Mulder or trust him. Though Mulder's no longer in the FBI, he's got enough contacts and connections to still be a viable threat against the conspirators. He might even make appearances in The Lone Gunmen. They've already done that with Scully and Skinner. However, Mulder's thunder has been stolen. He's waving goodbye, and it's time to let him go. As for DMan's reviews of X-Files, I find them useless. However, here's why AICN doesn't use die-hard fans for X-Files reviews. X-Philes come in two forms: "Shippers" and "Plotters." Shippers focus on the relationships between characters; predominantly the potential romance between Mulder and Scully. Their comments and opinions about the show tend to only be understood by other Shippers. They're still watching the show, and as far as most Shippers are concerned at this point, Chris Carter can do no wrong. So reviews from such fans are one-sided and would prove as useless on the opposite side of the spectrum as reviews by DMan or anyone who doesn't like the show as much. The other kinda X-Files die-hard fans, the Plotters, well most of us Plotters pretty much left the show around the time of the movie. When Mulder and Scully almost kissed. That was enough for me to stop being a die-hard fan. It was when X-Files jumped the shark. http://www.jumptheshark.com I come back to X-Files now and then. I liked this past week's episode, but it's undeniably not the same program that I fell in love with back in '93. All the plot elements have been laid out. From a Plotter perspective, it's been time for the final act since season five. Chris Carter's just stretching the premise now. And more power to him. It's the only idea he's come up with which is still making him good money. I'll probably be there when they finally make that last big finale episode, but I'm just not the die-hard fan I used to be. This series should have ended with the movie. The pieces are all in place. It's time for him to put them all together. And y'know what? I don't personally think he knows how to do it.

All the people that were part of the secret group preventing the aliens, at least from the U.S., were fried by the aliens. As far as we know, the CG man is dead. As for Mulder just leaving the X-Files and just walking away, what was he supposed to do? It's the freaking FBI!!! Was he just gonna hold the files hostage?? I think this has all been planned. I think that when Mulder discovered his sister was dead, and after he was kidnapped by aliens, he ii now saying "Screw it all!! I'm sick of this!!" I think the end of this season will have Mulder as the daddy, which will really change his perspective, and he will, essentially, walk away. The plotting of Mulder's demise in the FBI recently has been handled pretty well. I think there are other motivations going on with all the characters, especially Mulder, which will be revealed in the last couple episodes left.
-
Christ! don't any of you watch the next episode previews. Mulder IS IN NEXT FRICKIN WEEK'S EPISODE, and it's not even a conspiracy episode. It looks to be a rather run of the mill monster episode. Duchovny's not gone. geez..people can't handle a simple plot twist without thinking the Duchovny is gone for good.
-
It's soooo pathetically obvious he hates the show and always has. That crack about the piano music? F off! Of course he's not going to give it a good review. Is this just a pathetic attempt to restore some journalistic credibility by having someone else dismiss X-Files? So now Herc can say, "see, I told you so"...as if having one of his minions parrot his Buffylove by tearing down the ostensible competition will prove anything to anyone except those Whedon has already managed to brainwash. Look, I know X isn't always great. Even at its high point (season 2-3) it had problems with continuity. But good Christ, this is low. CA looks better by the minute. Goodbye.

by domisinnerchild
It neatly explains his love of porn and ability to get anything he wants. Mulder calmly walks in wearing his smoking jacket, slides a plain box covered video tape with a smirk to the secretary of the chopper rec's guy, and he's off and running.
