What's all this about Chyna signing on as WONDER WOMAN'

Published at:  Apr 24, 2001 4:51:44 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've been getting hammered with tons of email from WWF folks all over the web saying that about a half dozen WWF-themed sites are announcing that wrestling monster Chyna has signed on to play WONDER WOMAN.

The above picture is of an early concept pic that Alex Ross did up for his and Paul Dini's upcoming Christmas release period oversized book on WONDER WOMAN. Check out the others at AlexRossArt.Com, which is also the best location to buy me my birthday and Christmas presents... Hehehe... um... yah, riiiiiiiiiight. Anyway, that pic shoes ya exactly what WONDER WOMAN needs to be... A GODDESS! Now I know, while there are many GODDESS types in the world, very few that fit the Wonder Woman mold... Chyna falls into the AMAZON category... but can she act a lick?

As an instant message to the girls of the world should Wonder Woman be played by someone already having posed in PLAYBOY? Not that I feel there is a damned thing wrong with posing in PLAYBOY, and if that's the direction you want to go with WONDER WOMAN... An older crowd, then huzzah! However, my bottom dollar bet says Wonder Woman is a PG toy tie-in blitz to give Barbie a run for her money!

First off... finding a behemoth of a woman to play WONDER WOMAN is completely unnecessary. With today's technology, John Rhys Davies is being made a dwarf in LORD OF THE RINGS, I guarantee that the same technique can be used to make an unknown or known actress with ACTING ABILITY to shine as WONDER WOMAN!

If the rumors are complete BS... fine, just consider the advice I'm giving to be for whoever you may find. Find the ACTRESS first... It doesn't matter if she's four foot eleven... Hollywood made Alan Ladd tall... Hollywood can do anything! Hell, most people believe Michael Clarke Duncan is around 7 ft tall!

However, if this rumor is true... then I pray to god she can act! I pray she can tone down a bit, and pray she can be as tender on camera as she can be a warrior. But I'm banking that this rumor is exactly that... a rumor...

I just hope these are just rumors and nothing more. Chyna is more suited to play She-Hulk...Make that the regular Hulk! You know who would be a dope Wonder Woman though---Tera Patrick! Who cares if she can act.

Chyna as WW ? Whatta Waste ! This is the chance to do something good with the franchise- don't cast a She Hulk ( Hey, there's a role !) Harry's right- get an actress, WW isn't a monster, she's a super powered person... Howz about Jessica Beil from 7th Heaven ? Catherine Zeta Jones is my first choice, but she's maybe a little too serious for the role.. Oh yeah.. AND WHERE'S DOC SAVAGE ????

And I'm first... whoop-dee- friggin- doo

You think being "Chyna" ain't acting? Joan Laurer says she's just playing to the cheap seats; the woman herself is a sweetheart. But I think a Chyna-version Wonder Woman could be a novel interpretation: a fierce, brooding Amazon princess of few words, a stranger in a man's world, forced to be a warrior among savages. The first 15 minutes should be like the quiet part of "Castaway," except with unclothed goddesses fishing in the shallow waters and generally doing things all elegant and heavenly and what-not. Plus, Harry, I don't think you'll give a damn about Chyna's acting once you see her swirling ass.

Chyna has got to be one of the most distubing sights in popular media. She's ugly, is built like a man, and sounds like Orson Welles. I'd rather see Marilyn Manson rill the role. At least then it would be obvious that the casting is a joke.

Dispite being a WWF fan, I don't think Chyna would make a good WW. Simply because she's a godess. She doesn't need muscles to be touch, she's elegant, and forcefull all at the same time. WW needs to be played by a Catherine Zeata-Jones. Also, the risk of building a movie around a WWF persona is risky. Usually everyone has their preconcieved ideas of what the movie is going to be like. Not knocking Chyna, but I think she's not going to make a good WW.

I'm also disturbed by the idea that Chynna should play She-Hulk. Even if they can erase that unsightly bulge in it's briefs using CGI...

I believe that anyone who says that they view Chyna as a thing of beauty, is just afraid to come out and say what gender they really find attractive. Please, in all seriousness, you CAN NOT look at Chyna and tell me you don't think of a man. Even if she is a woman, there is too much manliness to her to be the object of a heterosexual male's desires.

Does anyone remember the 80s Russian comedian, YAKOV SMIRNOFF? Of course, 99% of his humor is now as dated as Ms. Pac Man, "Top Gun", and Atari 2600.....still he had a good line about how awful TV was back in communist Russia. He talked about the Russian version of "Wonder Woman"......'she looks like a woman, but you wonder...' (Ironically, Yakov may be back to the 2-rubles-a-day jobs he fled Russia over).

Why can't they just get Shannon Elizabeth and be done with it?

    by axelfoley

Hey guys, for what it's worth Shannon Elizabeth-- while not the world's greatest actress-- would make a good Wonder Woman. Why? Well, for one she's young. She can pull of the nice and pure look and display in your face "don't mess with me" temperament if she wanted. Now as one of the 74 people that saw Tomcats, let me say that Elizbeth has the look down pat. If whoever's making this movie wanted to take the golden age route with Wonder Woman-- a character that doesn't really NEED a movie, but I'll open that can of whoop ass in a minute--Shannon would be good because she's an up and coming star. This could be a big break out for her. Did I forget to mention how gorgeous she is? She has the looks, skin tone and stature of a goddess. Have her pull a Tobey Maguire if she needs to, like he did for Spidey. She has a nice enough body as it is, but if she needs to bulk up so be it. Chyna is really the wrong way to go for several reasons. 1) As convincing an actress Joanie Laurer is with her character, the movie itself will be bogged down way to much with Chyna as Wonder Woman instead of Wonder Woman: The Movie. 2) Chyna personally, for what it's worth does resemble a man. Let's face it. I'm not bullshitting here, and if you think I am that's your problem not mine, but Chyna has a great personality and spirit. Is she the most convincing female thespian on the planet? No, she's not. She's a world renown, popular wrestling performer and icon who's done a lot for wrestling and rest assured will not be forgotten for her contributions inside and out the ring pertaining to the controversial and ever questionable world of professional wrestling. That said, they can do better. Now I'm not casting director, but let me make this clear right now. Chyna's too jacked and would make more of a Xena Warrior Princess than WW. Now, earlier, I mentioned that this movie doesn't need to be made. I'll explain why I feel this way. Wonder Woman is that compelling a story. If the movie makers get someone like Lucy Lawless or someone of her prestige, people are not going to get an Amazon goddess. They're going to get a sterotypical warrior princess with camp With that in mind, don't some of yous think it'll be prone to being too much like a poor man's Xena. Keep in mind, WW's been around for over 40 years, but this show's how minimal the strong women's caricature is on television and film. And finally, back on Elizabeth, wouldn't it be a breath of fresh air if the suits got a movie ACTRESS and not Chyna or Mariah Carey? Mariah Carey is a good singer but can't act for SHITE. She doesn't even look like Diana. The only reason I'm even commenting on this issue to begin with is because I like comic book films. But is this one really worth being made. I personally don't think so, but now that they are, they shouldn't get someone just of their namesake. What fucking laziness. But then again, we will see organic webshooters and a Power Ranger Green Goblin.

First let me just say that anyone who devotes even one minute of their time per week to "Professional" Wrestling, is a hopeless moron, and should be shot dead and piddled upon by a jury of 12 well-hung dillrods. Secondly, a beautiful and talented actress (maybe Catherine Zeta-Jones, or Angie Harmon - she needs a job) would be far better suited to ACT in a movie. Let the chemically and surgery altered dog-faced meat tendon play a burly dyke enemy, or some other inconsequential mass of neurotic poison beef. This is supposed to be Wonder Woman, not "I wonder if that's REALLY a woman..."

Just because Chyna was in Playboy doesn't mean she is hot enough to be Wonder Woman (Playboy went for the biggest WWF female star, not the hottest). If the producers of this bomb-to-be want strenght for the role, cast a man, because Chyna is very close to manly.

I'm so confused and aroused when I watch her MANhandle some female wrestler on WWF, but I still have to admit that Vince "Mephisto" McMahon knows how to push my buttons. She might pull it off as WW if she toned down and learned how to act. Then again, for Catherine Zeta-Jones to pull it off, she would have to bulk up and learn how to act. by superninja

She was in my building, probably filming a commercial. She looks like Debbie Mazar if she did steroids. That probably sounds pretty hateful, but I literally thought she was a drag queen at first until I took a second glance. I don't understand why someone would want to do that to their body, but then again, she's a millionaire and I'm not. She's also not been offered the part.***As for Wonder Woman, Lucy Lawless is just too obvious. Unless she could turn in an amazing performance, I don't see audiences separating the two. Xena is a pop-culture icon. On the other hand, I don't see the possibility of a good Wonder Woman movie coming out of Warner Bros., either. Harry mentions the action-figure tie-ins, but I think that will be the least of their worries. Wonder Woman doesn't have a strong cast of villains (there's not a great history of inventing comic villains for movies), and no way are they going to set it during the War. The t.v. show was fun, but it was fluff, and with rumors of Mariah Carey of all people being cast, I can't help but think they're going for a Charlie's Angels angle. Which is exactly what I do not want to see. This is why I prefer her as an ensemble character. Unless they focus on the culture of the Amazons and give her some really strong supporting characters (NONE of which the audience will recognize, save WW herself) I don't see how this is anything worth watching. The script is the thing.

Chyna? Uh, no. Even after the plastic surgery left her face looking considerably more feminine, she's still just too damn big. She-Hulk, shure, but not Wonder Woman. Get Lucy Lawless. By Zeus, Wotan and the mighty Cthulhu, she is perfect in every way: looks, acting ability, you name it. If not her, then yes--Jennifer Connolly. Buff her up just alittle in the gym--enough to give her some definition--and she would be magnificent as my favorite Amazon Warrior Princess. And if not *her*. . .well, I know it's a long shot since she doesn't look Greek at *all,* but. . .Zhang Ziyi. Again, buff her up A LITTLE in the gym, get a A-list director and A-list budget and above ALL ELSE a top drawer script, and turn her loose. Ahh. . .it would be glorious. . .

Come on, no Chyna for She-Hulk! She's my favorite female Marvel character. What this means is we need John Byrne to draw the She-Hulk agin...

The greatest piece of slam dunk casting in the history of castin

    by village idiot

Now I know some people I respect around here have suggested on past boards that Jennifer Connelly is too squishy, bt I think that's an incredibly lame cop out. Reeve bulked up for Superman. Connelly is at the right age, at the right point in her career, and goshdarnit, she looks like Wonder Woman. Now if she'd get off her indie high-horse and actually do it is another story.

    As for Lawless...

    by dlhstar

She said on Stern many moons ago that she didn't want to do a WW movie because it was nearly the same as her role on Xena... But with Xena going byebye...

My top ten WW choices instead of Chyna:

    by floob

    1. Paul Giamatti 2. Benny Hill 3. Bea Arthur 4. Alan Greenspan 5. Drew Carey 6. Patrika Darbo 7. Michael Clarke Duncan 8. Ellen DeGeneres 9. David Spade 10. Tom Green. But since none of those choices would be accepted by the moviegoing public, let's cast JENNIFER CONNELLY!!! I've enjoyed her looks (and acting) ever since THE ROCKETEER!

    Her voice!!!!!!!!!!

    by nutzacio

when i think of wonder woman, i think of a strong saucy type of a woman. Have you heard Chyna speak? She sounds like my father on steriods for christ's sake. Even if she could act like Julia Roberts, you still would have to play with that deep freaky voice. I promise you that if they had a love scene in the movie, you bet I would be wondering who had the deeper voice. The lead male or her. Hell no, if Chyna is casted as Wonder woman the whole thing would be a joke. Almost as bad as casting Jean claude van damme as Guile in "Street fighter!" For some of you who don't know a thing about the movie, Guile is completely american. He even has a tatto of the american flag on his arm. If you haven't seen the movie, your not missing much, except for one of Raul Julia's last roles which he shouldn't have signed on at all. The movie was a complete flop. So that's my thought on the subject. Chyna is a baaaaaaaaad choice. I also saw her in playboy.........Didn't do much for me there either.

    Just a note here....

    by tenguman

I read a couple Catherine Zeta Jones fans point out that ass scene in Entrapment... just thought I'd point out that they used a body double for that shot. I don't know who's ass that is for real, but in a making of show that I saw for it, the showed exactly how they made that scene. Sorry to disappoint. And just for the record... while i have no hands down vote for WW, I'm leaning to Jen Connelly. (Yahoo for Labyrinth!)

    SHANNON ELIZABETH

    by lethargic

I agree 100% with the person before who suggested Shannon Elizabeth. I think she has what it takes to play both sides of the character and shes young enough to be around for a while for a franchise. A while back I started writing my own little Wonder Woman script as a hobby and I decided to have Shannon in my mind as the character so I could visualize the story better. Actually I wanted Julie Strain as Wonder Woman, but that ain't gonna happen. Anyway, I fooled around and drew up my own version of the costume and then drew it on a pic of Shannon Elizabeth. Dammit, I just want to see that in real life. If anybody wants to see how the pic turned out email me.

First Buffy And NowThis WTF Is Up With Warners?

    by the founder

First they let Buffy slip to UPN(kudos to UPN), they make all the fans of Superman loose faith that a good movie can every be made, and lastly Chyna is cast as WW??(god I hope this is a rumor, and a curse on who ever put this frightning image in our minds if they started the rumor)Who in the hell is running the WB? I've always laughed when some made a joke that trained monkeys may be in charge, but after reading this it seems to be true.By GOD'S good name I hope an exec at WB is reading this site and see that nearly 100% of us is on agreement that Chyna is wrong for the part of WW.When you think of WW you think of beauty and eleagance, not of a overly muscled female wrestler, and I've got nothing against Chyna, infact I think she has one of the nicest personnalities I've seen of a celebrity. As far as casting I haven't given it much thought, because I don't see a need for a WW movie, but Jennifer Connely, Shannon Elizibeth, and Angie Harmon all sound like good choices to me, hell I even liked when Sandra Bullock was rumored for the role.If Warners are truly interested in bringing a comic adaption to the big screen, and a property without a lot of baggage then my personel choice would be the Authority(about a billion to one odds of this happening)or something that could be pulled off without having to do a high budget then I'd go with Planetary, but the suits at Warners don't realize some of the comic properties they own can make a awsome movie, and it doesn't have to be reconized by everyone to be a hit.I think the big icons like Supes and Bats are just to weighted down with tons of baggage for a good movie to ever be made unless Warners gets ballsy and drop all the excess baggage, but their greed will never let this happen, f&cking ass*oles will they ever learn.

    I love Chyna, BUT...

    by rickslamu2

I can see her playing Diand about as much as i can see Saundra Bolluck playing her. AKA not at all! A part of me wishes that Jonie could pull this off being that she now has sofened her paysique by a lot. But Wonder Woman? I just don't think so!

"Chyna"? what an odd name for a guy.....

    by general idea

He must have gotten teased with that name as a young boy in grade school... Ya know, I understand the buff bod part, but even if he toned down, he's still pretty ugly. I mean look at those pics... Seriously, I shouldn't knock her. She's got every right to make a living doing her thing. More power to her. The Rock will probably be fine in The Mummy Returns, presumably because he'll have little or no acting to do. Wonder Woman, however, is a character on par with Superman as far as popularity, & it should be done carefully. Unless it's just going to be camp, & then they should just have Lucy Lawless do it. I'd love to see Jennifer Connelly in anything, but has she ever been seen in any sort of action/whup-ass scenes? She's got the perfect face, maybe a little toning & I'll audition her personally for the role.

    sharon bruneau

    by edgecenter

once again, the perfect choice, if she can act a lick(hes studying it right now)...i mean, shes smart, so that means she can figure out fake emotions, i.e. acting...check out a pic online(she has her own website too "sbruneau.com")...i mean, she's slimmed down bigtime from her bodybuilding days(she was never that big to begin with), & her body is simply peak...theres almost not a more naturally sensual woman on the planet, esp. not one who looks(& i mean her eyes)like she could kick your ass...

Comics2Film already debunked the rumors of Chyna's casting...

    by kingkrypton

...but that still doesn't mean that it won't happen. It doesn't mean that the proposed Mariah Carey casting won't happen, either. WB hates its comic book properties. Their shameful treatment of Superman (the Peters/Burton/DiBonaventura movie fiasco, the sure-to-suck-unbearably SMALLVILLE, and their sabotaging any chance of the 1978 film's relrelease), Batman (pretty much all of the movies thus far), SANDMAN (Peters has butchered the planned adaptation thus far)...need I go on? The proof is there. WB doesn't realize what they have, nor do they want to realize it. As for Chyna...I came out against Mariah Carey being considered for the role and I'm against the casting of Chyna, too. She's too bulky, too masculine in terms of facial features, and she doesn't convey the proper aura of regal elegance and courage. Catherine Zeta-Jones does, and she has the glamourous beauty for the role. So does Penelope Cruz. And unlike Chyna and Carey, Zeta-Jones and Cruz can act. As for Lucy Lawless...she doesn't have the talent and the regal bearing for the role. She's too campy and outrageous. This role needs subtlety. Madonna is too old, and she lacks the overpowering beauty this character requires. Cast either Zeta-Jones or Cruz as WW, and you're good to go. But this being WB, they'll probably give it to Chyna or Carey.

Your out of your freakin mind,Chyna is a goddess to be reckoned with. while i agree XENA would make a A#1 WW. Chyna shuld not be discounted. As far as any other roles that might be suitable for chyna, my vote goes for SHE-HULK.

    by bwepc

What about Krista Allen (CSI, X-Files, Baywatch) for the part of Wonder Woman? Her appearance on X-Files drew great reaction as an ass-kickin' virtual reality goddess. She has the look, is athletic and can act...
