HERC Gives The New BUFFY ****!!

Published at: April 23, 2001, 7:04 p.m. CST

BUFFY 5.18 FAQ

What’s the new “Buffy” called?

“Intervention.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay is credited to Team Whedon secret weapon Jane Espenson (author of some of this season’s funniest and most haunting episodes: the Xander-duplicating “The Replacement,” the troll-conjuring “Triangle,” the Watcher-heavy “Checkpoint,” and the robo-centric “I Was Made To Love You”).

The big news?

One of our best long-lead spoiler sources, “Scriptgirl,” already told us all about this one way back on April 8.

"Scriptgirl?” What were “Cap’n Kronos’” March 11 predictions for 5.18 again?

Anya is offered a shot at regaining her demonic powers, which causes major drama in Casa Del Xander. Spike’s “Master Plan” – replacing Buffy with the Stepford Buffy – is revealed. Buffy quickly uncovers said plan, destroys the Stepford Buffy, and beats Spike to an inch of his unlife (supposedly worse than he’s even been beaten before). She then issues Spike an ultimatum: leave Sunnydale or get staked. Spike hints that his Inhibitor Chip is now either malfunctioning or has been removed. Brian is revealed to be the father of Glory/Ben.

Was “Cap’n Kronos” right?

No. Anya is offered no demonic powers. Spike has no plan to replace Buffy with the Buffybot. Buffy does not beat up Spike or tell him to leave Sunnydale. Spike does not learn his chip is malfunctioning or has been removed. Brian, whoever that is, is not revealed to be the father of Glory/Ben.

What were “Xander’s Girl’s” March 31 predictions for 5.18?

Angel arrives in Sunnydale to find Buffy an emotional wreck; Buffy’s dad Hank and his new cookie (Melissa Gilbert) turn up to collect Dawn; Spike gets his Buffybot, which immediately starts trying to kill him; Ben the Intern disappears; Glory possesses Spike.

What did XG get right?

Not much. Spike does gets his Buffybot, but the Buffybot at no point tries to kill Spike, as amusing an idea as that is. Angel does not turn up, and neither does Buffy’s dad. Though Ben does not appear in this episode, neither does he “disappear.” Glory does not possess Spike.

Enough with these pretenders! What did “Scriptgirl” say on April 8?

Buffy, who starts to fear she is losing the ability to love, agrees to leave Dawn with Xander and Anya and join Giles on a desert retreat so she might gain information from "The Guide" (in the form of the “first slayer” from “Restless”). Buffy’s “guide” will tell her that love will lead her to her gift – and that "death is your gift."

Glory, now aware that The Key is human, dispatches minions to spy on the Scoobs because she thinks Buffy knows the identity of The Key.

Spike gets his Buffybot from Warren. Spike whines about it looking plasticky, but once Buffybot kisses him, he is very satisfied.

A post-coital Buffybot heads out on patrol and runs into Xander and Anya, also on patrol. Xander is surprised to see Buffy back so soon, and finds her behavior most passing strange. Soon Xander catches the Buffybot having sex with Spike, and relays this news to the other shocked Scoobs, who think Buffy must be doing this out of her grief over Joyce’s death.

As Xander speaks to Spike about Buffy, Glory’s minions bust in and kidnap Spike. Because the Buffybot was seen protecting Spike, the minions are now convinced that Spike is The Key. When Spike is delivered, Glory is enraged; Spike can’t possibly be The Key because he’s not human! Glory sets about torturing Spike for information about The Key.

Worried about Spike spilling the beans about Dawn to Glory, the Scoobs head to Buffy’s house to gather weapons, only to be met there by the Buffybot, itself looking for help. As the Slayer Circle tries to stage a (hilarious) intervention, Buffy herself returns and is hugely peeved that the Scoobs couldn’t tell the Buffybot from the real thing. On the way to find Glory’s lair, the Buffybot is damaged by minions.

Though beaten and bloodied by a Key-seeking Glory, Spike can’t resist mocking her, calling her a “god of bad home perms" and the like. Glory hits Spike so hard she breaks his restraints, and Spike manages an escape. Glory abandons her lair as the Scoobs close in.

The damaged Buffybot returns to the Spikecrypt and finds Spike with his eyes so swollen he can barely see.

BUFFYBOT: Why don’t you just tell Glory what she wants to know?

SPIKE: Because I can't do that to Buffy. The real Buffy.

(The Buffybot kisses Spike on the lips, sweetly)

SPIKE (pulling back in shock): What did you do with my robot?

BUFFY: The robot is gone. The robot is gross. Don't do it again. And thank you.

What did “Scriptgirl” get wrong?

Nothing of consequence. The ending dialogue is not literally the ending dialogue, but rather a very efficient summary.

Didn’t Coax predict the Spike-Buffy kiss way back on March 5?

It did. To give credit where credit is due, note that this ending was predicted by “Harold in Chicago” nearly two months ago.

What did “Harold” say?

”Apparently the final arc of the season will have Spike captured and tortured by Glory to find out what he knows about The Key. Spike in true Scooby fashion will refuse to break and Buffy posing as the imitation Buffy will know of it and give Spike an unexpected and steamy reward.”

What did Herc say about Harold’s rumor way back on March 5?

“I swear I can feel the Hand of Whedon in it.”

What did some of those rascally talkbackers have to say about Herc’s appraisal?

“Somebody’s slipping. Herc, buddy, I think your meds need readjusting. The Buffy rumor sounds neat, and lords know that I want Buffy and Spike to hook up, but I just don't see it happening.” – Grimjack99

“Faker than Pam Andersons boobs… c'mon guys...never print anything like this on instinct! Jesus when this is proved wrong just keep your promise… Buffy WILL NEVER touch Spike that way.” – sundown

“How do you like your crow, Herc? Because I will be personally shoving it down your throat when these prove false. Why is it everyone has a better bullshit detector than the guys that run these sites? It's almost as annoying as these wanna-be-writer fanboys who come up with this crap and send it to you in the first place.” – WrathfulBuddha

“FALSE. Buffy wouldn't do Spike just for helping her out, since he's already done so a few times at least. Of course, having lost her mom she might not be in her right mind, but she'd have to have beef with him over the Buffy-bot.” – Twig

What didn’t Harold and Scriptgirl tell us?

Dawn is up to something. She inexplicably steals a pair of Anya’s earrings!

Is the “first slayer” all inarticulate and grunty again?

No. The first slayer is just a “form” this time. She’s very well-spoken (in a hard-to-know-what-she’s-getting-at kinda way).

What key question does Buffy ask the first slayer?

”I’m getting a gift? Or do you mean that I have a gift for someone else?”

How does the first slayer reply?

”Death is your gift.”

What’s good about 5.18?

What’s great about 5.18 is the hilarious Buffybot (who’s a bit like Anya squared)!

What’s so funny about the Buffybot?

Its programming. Wait till you hear how she’s programmed to talk about Angel! Wait till you hear how she refers to Spike during sex! And there are these inspired Terminator-type point-of-view shots (the best readout is the homage to IMDb it displays for Willow)!

Does anyone actually call it a “Buffybot”?

Nope.

Anything else great about 5.18?

Tons! The Buffy-Dawn stuff! The Spike-Buffybot stuff! The Spike-Glory stuff! The Glory-minion stuff! Anya’s first meeting with the Buffybot! Tara’s reaction when she learns “Buffy” is boinking Spike! Buffy’s vision quest (the slayer’s enduringly pragmatic approach to the mystical never fails to elicit a laugh)! Buffy’s reaction when the Scoobs accuse her of having sex with Spike! Buffy’s line about Xander when Xander starts analyzing Spike’s attributes!

Whoa, whoa, easy, Herc!

And that’s just the funny stuff! The final scene – teeming as it is with redemption and forgiveness – made Herc cry like Kentucky Joe in front of a computer screen! I’m tellin’ ya, this baby is packed!

You still like Glory?

Glory rules, baby.

What’s not so good?

Um, not enough Tara? There’s very little not to like about “Intervention.” It’s just plain wonderful!

Do we learn why Willow “pulled a Tara” last episode?

Nope!

Does Joel Grey turn up?

Nope!

Is anyone possessed by Glory?

Nope!

How do you feel about the move to UPN?

I’m for it if Joss is for it. (Joss is for it.) I hope UPN gets “Angel” too.

Do you think WB is going to let UPN have “Angel?”

I think so.

Wanda the TV Gossip over at E! Online still hasn’t revealed outright how the season ends, but she’s been dropping the biggest, most insanely huge hints ever since Herc broke this major spoiler weeks ago! In exchange for the spoilers she gets, does the WB prohibit Wanda from revealing the really big stuff?

I don’t know!

    Fuck UPN.....

    by Jarek

Seriously, this is the worst decision ever. I own a C-Band dish, and I live in Canada. Now, the problem with that is that there are no UPN affiliated channels available to Canadian C-Band subscribers, so we no longer get Buffy. Fortunately, I get it on a fairly local channel that has the rights to air Buffy until the end of the series. It's too bad that the channel is on aerial and has such crappy reception.

    buffy bot...huh?

    by THE WALLACE

Why does no one question the stupidity of this? has this been in the show before and I missed it? why is this "bot" talked like it's been in the wait for awhile? But most of all...Why doesn't anyone think this isn't the stupidest thing ever?!?!?! A "robot". How in fuck would anyone build a hyper realistic robot that could fool the gang? I don't get it.... SOMEONE HELP ANSWER THIS!!!!

can this season get any better??

    by snobme

first the introduction of Dawn, and Glory. second the exit of Riley. then the death of Joyce. I could care less where Buffy goes next season, because I will follow!! I can't wait for the 100th episode, and the season finale, but i can wait even less till next season!! Joss and company, I LOVE YOU!!!

    The Wallace

The Buffy-bot was ordered by spike at the end of episode 15: "I was made to love you" about some dudes robotic girlfriend. That was only three episodes ago but it feels like it was three months ago.

well Herc, I wasn't really wrong

    by Twig

I said Buffy wouldn't "do" Spike, which it appears she indeed won't. As for the ep, I'm all for a heavily comedic ep after all the well done seriousness.

They're breaking the pattern of one serious, one silly. Isn't Angel all about the Host this week? Cordy in swimsuit alert!

Buffy Gets ****!! BIIIG surprise!! Oooo!

    by Cuppa Joe

No offense to Herc or anyone, I agree that Buffy is a good show, and although I missed a lot of recent episodes, I'm sure that this is a good episode. But Herc gives like EVERY episode of Buffy like... 4 stars. It's so stupid. I mean why even bother reviewing it anymore? Herc saying "Tonight's Buffy gets ****!!" is about as much of a given as someone saying "if I was shot in the head I would die!!"

  • April 24, 2001, 12:23 a.m. CST

Cuppa, would it kill you to just check out one other review? lts

    by Hercules

I mean, yeesh! If you just look at last week's review, you'll see it got three stars. Okay, now I'm REALLY going to bed.

Buffy's also been on a real run of great episodes (you know, home stretch... Sweeps). I don't find it surprising the past five episodes have been like 4, 3, 4, 3, 4 stars.

    Listen up, mothatrucka...

    by Cuddly_Mantis

In the original spoiler, the person said "Buffy wll be grateful and give Spike a steamy reward." or some shit like that. Obviously, this poster is a total virgin, because a kiss is not, technically, steamy, even though Herc is having a grand old time being snide here. Sex is steamy. A big fat blowjob is steamy. Her getting semi-naked and dancing around A kiss, especailly a "sweet" one, is not steamy, okay motherfucker? Even if it's from SMG. And another thing. Upgrade these damn boards. You can't even get more than one paragraph-Christ, it's like listening to someone with Tourette's syndorme.

  • April 24, 2001, 2:03 a.m. CST

I'm still recovering from last weeks episode.

    by Psyclops

I'm not kidding. Those last five minutes had me bawling like a little baby! I had to wipe away the tears and pop in a Terminator movie afterwards just to make sure my testosterone was still pumping. I'm a manly-man, damn it!!!!

    Steamin 'Reward'

    by Glenngarry

Where I come from, a hot steaming one is essentially a shit. Now what if that's what Harold meant, buffy takes a dump on Spike for using a buffybot heh??? I'd hate to think of the so called 'hand of wheedon' being involved in that little number. Ah man, Im sorry, I come from a small island in the south east of England, and most of the population are inbred, and there are lots of sheep, who are in some cases related to the residents. Hence the low level and crude nature of this posting.

for my birthday(which is tomorrow-yah me!)with all the trimmings and he can nibble on my neck all he wants...RRRROOWWWLLL! Ok,enough lusty thoughts-I have been looking forward to this show ever since IWMTLY due to the laughfest of love that I know it will be(Spike getting tortured will be sad but knowing him,he'll get in some good insults). I have a opinion about what Buffy finds out from her guide in the visionquest but I want to see the show first before commenting.

    Predictions for Finale

    by RogerOThornhill

I just want to get these in early to see if anyone responds to them. (I put them on the UPN tb, but they were wisely ignored because of their irrelevance.) In the season finale, Buffy goes to hell, or at least one of the demon dimensions that serves as hell in the Buffyverse. If the guest stars show up, this is where they will be. I'm not sure if the predicted tombstone will be at the end of 5.21 or 5.22. (For me, 21 works better but what the hey.) Doc has got to be the third of the trio, with Ben (Benificus?) and Glory being the other two--kids to his father, since this season is about families. Glory and Ben strike me as a literalminded version of Shiva, creator and destroyer, healer and shopper, whatever. There's still one thing that bothers me, though. At the beginning of the season, there were all these hints dropped about reality being altered, sometimes as wish fulfillment: the picnic on the beach, Riley's brilliant comment about not noticing the big freaking castle in Sunnydale before, even Dawn showing up as a wish fulfillment for Joyce, who didn't want to be in the house alone. All this predates Dawn's arrival, almost as if the powers the Scoobies unleashed at the end of last season warped reality, much as that loser guy did with the spell that made him everybody's hero. I may be imagining all this, but it feels as if it's hanging there. In any case, those are my guesses; I can't wait to see Total Quality Whedon pull out even better ideas. And finally I agree with others that it would be nice to have paragraph breaks, especially when you're logorrheic like me.

  • April 24, 2001, 4:19 a.m. CST

Here's my guess for what happens this season and next ...

    by TrollPrincess

Okay, so Wanda at E! Online's been saying that Buffy has to kill a Scooby to save Dawn. My guess? It's Spike she has to kill, and right when she's getting to love him, which gets those feelings cemented when she has to do it. Fast forward to next season, when "Death is your gift" comes into play -- Buffy won't see that killing Spike was a gift for both her and Spike until ... tada! He shows up again, alive and human, like Darla did on Angel. That was probably one of the reasons that happened on Angel ... to prove it could. Here's hoping.

  • April 24, 2001, 5:59 a.m. CST

DOOOOOHHHH!!!! Ya Got me Herc (credit where its due)

    by sundown

BUUUT I kiss my MOm and I don't think I'm touching her THAT way. Although the spoilers turned out to be correct overall so kudos I am a punk beyatch. BUT the other two sets of spoilers it weas sandwiched in were DEAD wrong and I still haven't seen the kiss and I still doubt Buffy thinks of it THAT way. I'll see tonight. BAAAH You win today Herc BUT I'LL BE BACK!!! Also someone help me wipe this hot pocket off my face?

  • April 24, 2001, 7:27 a.m. CST

I don't know about anyone else

    by Hercules

but when I read "steamy surprise" I really wasn't expecting Buffy to give Spike a blow job for not revealing who The Key was.

  • April 24, 2001, 8:17 a.m. CST

MY GOD! Herc communicating with the riff raff!

    by sundown

well I doubt Joss would ever show a BJ on TV (although after my Spike error I'll just say DOUBT!!) but most people think passion as in steamy like the beginning of romance. I can't say one way or the other platonic or not cause I haven't seen it yet (but soon we'll all see it and come to our own conclusions) but I'm hoping its a platonic thing cause after Angel and that guy last season who used her and Riley that would make her a real victim. Either way it means she sort of respects him. Sort of.

  • April 24, 2001, 10:06 a.m. CST

also a note on the big bad

    by sundown

was it me or was the wizard that helped Dawn wicked creep!?! That guy was great and Joss only mistake was not putting him in it earlier. Glory might have been more tolerable playing off of this guy. He had a Mayor charm but WAAAY more malevolent. Also for the person who brought up alternaverse. It wasn't the gang mucking around last year but the creation of the key in Dawn form this year that warped reality methinks. All the clues are there even the shrimpless? world they talked about in the troll episode. And how the Knights talked about stopping the dimesnions from what sounds like merging with other demon worlds which have ...demon gods.

  • April 24, 2001, 10:18 a.m. CST

    steamy kisses?

    by Sylvia Simon

Wow. A "steamy reward" is a kiss? I wanna kiss from someone who can steam it up....Anyway, I figured some boot-knockin' was in the works for Buffy and Spike, and I'm glad to hear it's just a kiss. To TrollPrincess: the idea of killing Spike just as Buffy is starting to really feel for him smacks of the "sending Angel to hell just when he got his soul back". Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see something that bittersweet (SNIF!), but we may be outta luck there. If a Scoob has to die, it'll probably be a human one. Perhaps Tara or Anya? Either way, it'll be a sobber - I plan on stocking up on Kleenex just in case.

So let me get this straight, Buffy...

    by Wicked Raygun

You're going to do the stupidest thing imaginable by giving you're Stalker a false sense of a future together by kissing him. Sweetie... listen carefully and I'll try to use small words so you'll understand, kay?... You never *EVER* do that! For fuckssakes he was willing to kill you if you didn't say that there was a chance, and now you're going to go the extra mile by kissing him. You need to adjust the level of bleach content in your hair, Buff, it's starting to affect you're better judgement. Oh and BTW, I am so fucking bitter that I don't have a UPN affiliate.

OK so how does this "Alternaverse" theory play itself out?

    by Wookie Pot Pie

Assuming this is where JW is taking things. There's all these hints and clues that Dawns creation warped reality (The shrimpless world, the castle, the Kniggits etc). So is this going to be like the episode "The Wish" where we see a "what-if" style alternate world that really sucks and then gets put back right again? Or will it be a Back to the Future style where shit happens and a timeline branches off and in effect becomes your new reality? What I'm getting at is this. If a major Scooby, or Buffy herself dies in the Finale (Noooo) and they take it back "Wish" style, I'm really going to feel f*#@ed with. And they couldn't just bring back the Scooby/Buffy and not bring back mommy too? But otherwise how do we get back whoever dies in the finale without treading on old stuff (which Joss doesn't do). Help me please!!!

At least when Buffy moves to UPN..

    by Lizzybeth

.. I won't have to put up with fucking WB 4 in Indianapolis preempting the show for fucking basketball games. Who the hell cares about the Pacers? Sure, you LA folks missed one eppy for a baseball game, but at least they don't do that to you REGULARLY. Plus, they advertise as though Buffy will be on at the regular time, so that I sit down 10 minutes before the show and realize that the basketball game is replacing my show, as I did tonight. Clearly the bastardly behavior goes on down the chain in WB-land. :(

  • April 24, 2001, 5:14 p.m. CST

    "Steamy reward" means sex??

    by Hercules

Wrathful old man: You read "steamy reward" and thought that Buffy rewarded Spike with intercourse?? Herc took "steamy reward" to mean Spike got a kiss on the lips! If you think Buffy rewards non-boyfriends with sex, you have not been watching the show very carefully. .... .... .... .... Harold called it "steamy" so we didn't mistake it for a friendly peck, which tonight's kiss certainly was not. ..... ..... ..... ..... For the record, I thought the big kiss both "sweet" and "steamy." Note how LONG Buffy lingers on Spike's mouth (and note also that SPIKE is the one to finally break the kiss off). Very steamy, and the very definition of a handsome reward. Harold got it right, sweetheart ... .... .... .... FINALLY, if you go back to read my early-spoiler posts (all easily found by typing "buffy" in the AICN search box), you'll discover we put a lot more faith in Harold's and Scriptgirl's spoilers than the others .... ..... .... .... Don't forget to watch tonight's Angel. I predict many will like it even better than tonight's "Buffy"!

    Next week's preview... (spoilers?)

    by dp4m

Next week's previews seemed odd... it seemed to be completely bypassing what next week's ep is supposed to be -- Glory thinks TARA is the key and kidnaps her. TVGuide says that the escaping in the beat-up RV is in TWO weeks... any thoughts?

  • April 24, 2001, 6:10 p.m. CST

There *was* a bj in there...

    by JTylor

But it was the Buffybot dealing it. Funniest shot in the whole episode: right before Xander arrives at Spikes place, there's a shot of Spike, then the knock comes, and Buffybot shoots up from below the frame and turns around. Spike zips up and re-buckles his belt, then tells Buffybot to hide... I was dying when I realized what she was doing below frame!

  • April 24, 2001, 6:32 p.m. CST

    well well well

    by ThinTick

Loved this episode, probably the best this season, excepting the much favored 'the body' of course. Totally loved the desert stuff, great to hear the first slayer this time, although her words rather ... scary ... strange ... interesting.... I liked everything with spike, he's needed a good episode, he hasn't had one in a long while. However, I'm beginning to believe the rumors that he is the one to die this in the final ep this season. Also I'm becoming more confident that buffy will survive the coming move to its new home at UPN (cross my fingers and knock on wood). Joss Wheadon is God.

    Joss speaks . . .

    by Ophelia 's twin

at today's Bronze VIP archive.(tiny SPOILER WARNING) Here's part of what he says: "I will make my on-screen debut in Angel 21. No, I will not speak, and no, you will not see my face. But I will make my presence known! Just remember my watchword: Dignity. Always dignity. Also: Next year, there WILL be a musical Buffy episode. I'm working on it already. And people, I'm warning you: it just might suck. But I'll do my best. I'm writing the songs and the script (And of course I'll shoot it). The one thing I know for sure is I got some great singers in my cast. It's gonna be the hardest thing we ever tried to pull off, and that INCLUDES the COMPLETELY UNSHOOTABLE episode 100 that nearly killed me." He also talks a bit about the cartoon series and the UPN transfer if anyone's interested. **** Random thoughts: (1) IMO, tonight's kiss should not be classified as "steamy." It was sweet--barely a step up from sisterly. (2) I'm willing to bet that none of the scoobs are dying this season (at least not in the traditional sense)--this year has already been too sad. (3) I loved Doc from the last ep; I'm also willing to bet that he is NOT the third god and has no connection whatsoever to Ben and Glory. I'm hoping they keep him around for next season. (4) What was with Dawn and the earrings? I can think of no possible motivation. (5) Complete random guess on Buffy's gift: I distrust the spoilers about Buffy's death. I think Buffy will be giving death TO someone--specifically Dawn. Somehow she will have to kill Dawn(or at least the part of her that is the key) in order to save her. (6) WTF happened to Lindsey? Please tell me he's coming back.

    Last 4 eps

    by Kyze

Hey, not that this is too important. But did anyone notice that at the end of Buffy the WB announcer guy said to turn in next week for one of "Our Last 4 Episodes" not "... of the season" but just "Our Last 4 Episodes" I dunno, I guess I just wasnt ready to believe that the whole UPN thing was true. Hey, anyone know if Allyson Hannigan's going to be in American Pie 2?

Who cares if the Spoilers are wrong?

    by Electric_Monk

While, in general, I do like the spoilers, I am never upset on how wrong they sometimes can be. So what if Xander Girl is 0-4. Hell, at least she's getting 15 minutes of fame from everyone. As for the episode, I've got to say that the Buffy is still one of the funniest series that pretends to be serious. The scenes with the Buffybot "straddling" Spike and then giving him a blow job were a pleasant surpise. I was almost jealous! So get off the case of the spoilers not being spoily enough. Some times they work and sometimes they don't. We won't die if there wrong. Will you geek children?

    robots

    by Kcir

sheesh..not only can this kid build super sophisticated robots in his dorm room using out of the world AI along with plastic molds that can form faces and micro motors to cause perfect limb movement and the like, now Willow can repair them as well. Come on.. I know we have had bots in other episodes but its just plain silly in the context of the BVTS universe. This was not a bad episode, I did enjoy it but Dark Angel was better tonight.

Answers to XG and other thoughts

    by MGTHEDJ

Hi all. Xander Girl (according to another TB) has shut down her site and left the Buffy Spoiler buisness due to people flamming her for the consistant inaccuracies. For the uninitiated, the "Buffy" universe robots are an homage to "The Six million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman". These series had the Fembots (and it is where Mike Myers got the idea, even the name Austin refers to Steve Austin). Great ep: funny, foreshadowing, plot advancemant. Sorry you did not get to see it Lizzybeth. Loved it all.-----later-----m

...I said it was "a step up" from sisterly. But I stand by my opinion that it was just a tiny step up. (Unfortunately, I didn't tape the ep so I can't go back to confirm.) However, (and this might just be me) I got absolutely no hormonal vibe from that kiss--more like a sweet-and-friendly-but-nonsexual-lip-hug vibe.

    Buffy bot RULES!

    by Twig

That was my 2nd fave episode of the year, after "The Body." Man that was fun-NY. Best line: Xander: "I've already got the visual" Yeah, so do I. Boy, Spike really got the shit kicked out of him. They better not kill him off. And the Buffy bot should get a spin-off.

Man, if only leporus hobbits would kidnap Bob Barker. Admitidly, Willow being able to do matinence on the Buffybot is a major stretch, but other than that this was a blast. DEATH AWAITS YOU ALL. . .

    by Heffaloo

...with nasty, pointy teeth!! I read an interview with Giles (yeah, I know he's got a real name, but I don't care) saying that he's asked Joss to cut down on his screen time so he can see his family (like they could possibly be more important than we are!). It sounds suspiciously like what Momma Summers requested shortly before the big dirt nap, so maybe Ripper will bite it in the finale.

Buffy commercials and the whole Death and Rebirth thing

    by loucyphre

Hey there, long time reader, first time Talk Backer, blah blah... Anyway, Kyze noticed the same thing I did - that the announcer said "our final four episodes" or something to that effect. But I noticed something even more disturbing. Did anyone see their commercial spotlighting May sweeps? Neither Buffy, who has the big ep 100 or Angel got a single mention!!! Is this a deliberate attempt by the WB to bury Buffy before the move? Personally, I hope Angel gets to go to UPN, keep 'em both on a back-to-back slate, but I really wouldn't put it past WB to just keep Angel around for a couple years and fail to publicize it. I know it sounds petty, but I know someone who used to work for WB and they are very petty, very cheap and they get very very angry about stuff like this. At least that's what I'm told. Also, just a brief note - this entire season has been about death and rebirth. Yes, it's a common theme in the Buffyverse, but take a peek. Rebirth in the sense of Dawn and Buffy dealing with her and death in the sense of learning about her manufactured past. Death in the tragic passing of Joyce and rebirth in that Buffy and the rest of the gang have to learn how to move on. Death in the form of Riley's departure and rebirth in that Buffy has been reevaluating her priorities and her independence. And the ultimate and probably coincidental irony, that the show is now ending it's run on WB and moves to UPN. Just an observation. I'm skeptical about UPN, but here's hoping they prove me wrong. It wouldn't be the first time this team has done that.

    Buffy's visionquest

    by Wicked Willow

Ok,here's my take on the meaning of what the guide told Buffy-when she said,"Death is your gift",it reminded me of what Spike said to her in FFL,"Death is your art...you make it with your hands"and implied that Slayers have a death wish. People had said why wasn't Dracula the Big Bad but the real Big Bad this season has been Death(mainly Buffy's take on it),sure she's dealt in death but this year it really hits home(with her mom, losing Riley, learning to love Dawn). Buffy seems to see Death as Evil which it is not. Death is like many forces of nature-not meant to be bad but can be misused for evil purposes(murder, suicide, etc). The reason that Slayers are women(IMHO)is because since women bring new lives into the world, they are naturally inclined to protect it(hence the lioness). Vampires are a parody of death and loss so killing them(so to speak)is a gift to let the person they once were truly rest in peace. Once Buffy accepts that Death is part of her power tied into love, she will be able to stop Glory. Part of what's holding her back is her fear of losing Dawn-like the guide said, her love is blinding and strong. On a lighter note, loved the whole Buffybot thing"Darn your sinister attraction".."You're the Big Bad"-was so LOL. Spike was very heroic in his encounter with Glory and that sweet kiss from Buffy was well earned. His behavior has upgraded him from Stalker status and this will lead to something by the final episode(not romantic!).

    Where We're Going Here

    by RogerOThornhill

First, Wicked Willow--you rule. Your reading of "Death is your gift" sounds spot on, and the reading of the season as being about death sounds exactly right. Second, has anyone noticed a pattern in some of these spoilers, especially two of the more persistent ones: (1)Tara becomes a vegetable; (2)Anya dies? This means all four core Scoobies (whom JW has said he would never kill off) are now effectively mateless. This is a very nice setup for next season (which JW has said is the "oh, grow up!" season). All that having been said, I'm still convinced Buffy is going to a hell dimension in Ep 100 (which as has been noted in one of the posts was supposed to have been unfilmable). I don't know about anybody else, but I find it hard to wait until next week for another episode, which is probably why I'm doing this.

the steaminess level of the kiss and spoilers

    by sundown

considering the record of 'fan submitted spoilers' being wrong I don't know if I'd be so proud the one time I got it right... But as far as Buffys kiss there was a little 'sex' in it but not a lot. She didn't linger for the reason you think I think she lingered (and it was only a moment)so Spike would figure out what the deal was. And no need to be defensive... we all appreciate the job you do or we wouldn't be back week in and week out... And I seriously doubt Lindsey after the performance of the year (and his Liar Liar riff in the boardroom) is gone but he makes for one badass reformed character not unlike Spike or Faith to keep showing up every now and then. When he grabbed Lilas ass my head almost exploded I was laughing so hard! Line of the night for me was the 48 hours one...

    Herc, I totally agree ...

    by TrollPrincess

What sisterly kiss? I might give my brother a peck on the lips, but that was a good five or six seconds worth of kissing there. I don't know how you kiss your sister, but for her sake, I hope either she appreciates it or one of you is adopted. -- Meanwhile, Kcir, about the bot thing ... after the Ted episode, where Willow ransacked the 'bot for parts, I think Will's perfectly capable of fixing the Buffybot. And I also think that in a world where vampires and demons walk among humans, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief should be on hand. A guy's building lifelike robots in his dorm room? Okay, I've seen a guy training hell hounds to attack people in prom dresses, Darla come back from the dead, and Jonathan become popular. A little advancement in technology doesn't faze me.

    Musings on the episode

    by Geekgrrl

I think the bots are partially magical, which is why Willow can repair them and why they look so darn real. I also think the important clues in this episode were: Dawn stole the earings - why? and Glory said that the key had to be new to the world and uncorrupted and pure. So if Dawn starts to corrupt, what happens? Also, did anyone else notice how bothered Glory was by all of Spike's insults? It is also convenient that the Buffybot is available for repair, should the need arise --- like say the slayer is dead, and they need some sort of fill in to fool the local monsters?

  • April 25, 2001, 9:05 a.m. CST

    buffy, etc.

    by zippy-zip

They did not mention roswell in the may sweeps ad either. I have doubts that WB will show summer reruns of buffy. And my local WB had noise on it that blocked out part of the slayer quest scene luckly I had cc on. I hope the noise wasn't on purpose. Now I think it was interesting that glory said ben was her enemy and was getting stronger. If one of the scoobies dies it can't be spike 'cause he is not a scoobie-he is still an outsider. If tara is turned into a vegetable, wouldn't she be better off dead and buffy's gift to her could be death and tara's death could be the one that saves the world. also I hope lindsey is not gone from angel for good now that he turned around. my, he sure can sing

    Someone's gonna die

    by DestinysChilde

Well someones going to die, cause c'mon! It's Joss we're talking about here! :) And this whole season has had Willow and Tara's involvement become deeper, the Anya and Xander relationship blossom into the real thing, Buffy and Dawn dealing as sisters, and then we have Spikes feelings for Buffy and just what he might do to further himself in her eyes. One of them is going to bite it. As for last nights ep, I was happy to see Spike do something really selfless. It was truly because of his feelings for Buffy (and Dawn...Bitty Buffy) that he refused to tell Glory about the key. It wasn't done to impress Buffy, cause he thought he was going to die and neither Buffy nor the gang ever would have known that he died because he refused to give Dawn up. I have to admit, that even while I was sitting there telling my sister that he absolutely wasn't going to tell (she thought he would) that I had a niggling doubt in my mind. It was great to see him that heroic (Now Spike would choke over that! *G*). Now that they've (Joss, Jane, et al....) have got us really thinking that there is a chance of redemption for Spike, I think they're gonna yank the rug out from under us. There is that spoiler that he is going to do something so evil, we'll never think of him as anything but a villian again. Don't know how true that is, but I have a nagging thought that perhaps HE is going to be the one doing the killing of the character, as a result of something Glory does. Perhaps Glory does give Buffy the choice between Willow and Dawn, or herself and Dawn.....and as the character nears death, Spike does the whole sire thing on that person, thinking he is actually giving the gift of life since HE doesn't seem to think that being a vampire is so bad. If Willow were dying because of Buffy's choice, and Spike saw the pain it caused Buffy, don't you think that he would try to "save" Willow by turning her? In order for Buffy to keep her friend? Of course, that would leave Tara to have to do the resurection spell on Willow. That would provide "the gift of death", because in effect, when Buffy chooses Dawn, she is effectively giving death to the other person. It also would give credence to something the Buffybot said when Spike commented about "You know I can't bite you", and BB replied "I think you can if I want you to". Also lends a little credence to that rumour about Spikes chip being inactive. If he can bite someone because they WANT him to, then the chips effectiveness is moot. AND it concludes what was foreshadowed back in Dopplegangland. Willow is now gay....and this could make her a vamp. :) I wonder if even if she is souled, if she'll prefer leather? *G* OR it could justify that comment made by Angelus..."To kill this girl you have to love her." Well, it's pretty much established now that Spike does love Buffy. Would he turn her to save her? Spike would do it, not necessarily because of evilness, but out of a desire to help Buffy and save Willow. Remember....he doesn't think that being a vamp is a thing to be avoided. And in addition, he WAS trying to help Dawn bring back Joyce. Again, as long as it was done right (no zombies), he didn't think there was anything bad about her being resurected. It would bring back Buffy and Dawns mom, and wouldn't that make them happy? His logic is not our earth logic. *G* He knew Buffy wouldn't be too happy about Dawn messing with magic, and he didn't want Buffy to know he was helping, but he wanted to help Dawn with the end result. So...my vote? It's going to be either Willow or Buffy that Glory is going to try and kill, and it's going to be Spike that does the sire thing. It would be VERY interesting to see. Enough of the ramble. It's probably not going to be anything like I've been stating and Joss will have completely fooled me...again. :)

    Death as a gift

    by iloveryan

If the human souls of people who are vamped are trapped in this limbo known as "the Interregnum", as implied in Season 2 with that spell to restore Angel's soul, I can indeed see how the death of the vamp would be a gift to that human soul.

    That's not bad

    by DomisInnerChild

So your theory is somebody major will be vamped and Buffy has to kill them to release their soul? The only problem I see is there isn't a major vampire bad guy this season to do the trick. Maybe something about Glory trying to figure out why Buffy protects Spike pulls some strings to get another Scoobie turned to see the effect it has on Buffy? A key to vampire connection?

    Musings about earrings and time

    by yourdreamer

I was thinking that the reason for the earrings was that Dawn would use these either to point Glory into the direction of Tara (assuming they are hers), or to somehow save Tara (assuming the TV Guide episode preview is correct, of course). Also, I think that the longer Glory is alive in the Buffyverse, the stronger Ben gets--which is why she's running out of time. However, I'm too new to be wagering anything on these predictions yet...and I actually like the Hot Pockets, anyway...:)
