The Man of A Half Dozen Faces reports on MEN IN BLACK 2 script!

Published at:  Apr 22, 2001 11:40:58 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with The Man Of A Half Dozen Faces' look at MEN IN BLACK 2.... well, a draft of the script anyways... It looks like this'll be a post strike (if there is a strike) production, as Will hasn't quite finished ALI yet. So, given that the film wouldn't hit production for a while still, I imagine there will be tweaks and changes throughout.... So beware of spoilers, but realize things could change between now and release.....

finished reading the MIB 2 script dated 4/17 and wasn't too impressed but i think it'll work. it feels like a rehashed plot of the first movie just reverse the roles of Jay and Kay. i watched the first MIB right after and well, i guess they could complement each other. maybe it's not as continuousture series, but it tries it's best and almost succeeds. there are a few holes which i'll go over in a sec.

it starts off with the MIB on a mission, much like the first movie. except now Jay is the head agent and he's breaking in his partner, Tee. keep in mind that Jay has been doing this for 5 years now and it feels like the job's finally getting to him. he's not the same go getter that he was hired as, but a by the book veteran. but instead of putting up with his partners' rookie attitudes, he would rather go solo by neuralyzing them any time they screw up.

Serleena is the new villianess. somewhat similar to Edgar, but with more intelligence. i mean from what i can tell, she's supposed to be like a brain creature anyways, made up of these neural roots. she's here looking for something, something which only Kay knows about, but hey, Kay was sent back to the real world in MIB 1, so Jay has to bring him back in to remember what Serleena is looking for and once again, save the world. and just so you don't think that sounds too easy, they haven't perfected the process of deneuralyzation. so this also turns into a mystery about Kay's past days in the MIB and not just straight forward action.

there are a couple things i didn't care for. at first they wrote in that his wife that he returned to had left him. three lines of backstory that made it seem okay to be reacquainted with MIB. now, she's way, way in the background and at the end of the story she seems insignificant as Kay rejoins MIB. and they play up a romance that happens in Kay's past about 10 years after joining MIB. at the end of this script, i'm just wondering about Kay and his wife. that and the Jay romance with Jenna/Rita which would work better had Jay been doing the MIB thing a lot longer than 5 years.

but these things can be overlooked, i guess as there are some funny moments like Kay getting introduced to MIB hq much like the first movie with Jay. Kay's kept all of his mannerisms. and more scenes with Frank the pug and Jeebs.

if i were Amy Pascal and John Calley, yeah, i'd greenlight this movie too. and make this a great franchise. it's not the strongest storyline, but if i wanted to take 2002 and make that Sony's signature year of box office hits, oh yeah baby. MIB 1 made $250M, combine a sequel and Spidey in the same year? ouch.

    Kinda figured it...

What it reminds me of is that scene out of Last Action Hero when Arnold told the kid something along the lines of his Exwife being at his home, and the kid responds something like, "Your ex-wife isn't here! Her name wasn't on the poster!" This seems to be too common a practice in films anymore ("Hey, in the first movie, these two people who really loved each other got together. But we really need them separated for this one, so let's have them broken up..." Then someone in the background says, "Hey, can't we just kill her, and introduce another, hotter girl to give the hero some sexual healing?") I swear, if the local university would allow me to take a screenwriting class, I would... (I know there are several books on the subject, but a classroom setting would allow me a more academic study of the craft, and give me several students (in true Hollywood fashion) from which to steal ideas from... :) )

the first one was good, but

    by bcoming

it was lacking so much. it was good fun but they could have pushed it soooo much further. i was hoping that in a sequel they would push it further, go where no man has gone beofre. but instead it sounds as if they are holding back even more than in the first one. bah

    Tony Shalhoub rules...

    by darthnagus

...so it better be him as Jeebs again and not some one else. If Famke Janssen does get cast as Serleena this will be great, another fun movie like the first MIB was.

In earlier reports, there were rumors flying about all kinds of things. Like Johnny Knoxville from Jackass playing a 2 headed alien, and Rosario Dawnson from Josie and the Pussycats playing Will's love interest. Stories and other things are going to change right up to the release of the film. And if you look at the credits, X-Girls, their names ARE JAY and KAY.

    How true is this....?

    by triplej

It makes no mention of Johnny Knoxville as the two-headed. Do you ever stop think that this could be totally bullshit. Anyone could write a review like this. Just watch the 1st one and read the trades for the latest casting news, and you could make up a supposed script review. Besides Sony is heavily guarding the script so, the story can't come out. If this review is true, it's probably one of the very early drafts written close to two years ago now.

Oh boy another sequel starring Will Smith

    by batvomit

I hate Will Smith. I have always hated Will Smith. His rap career has about as much credibility as Vanilla Ice and he is almost as white as Vanilla Ice. He's like the token lovable black actor of Hollywood. He's black but not black enough to make white people uncomfortable.
The first Men In Black movie wasn't very good. Now we get to be subjected to the always inevitably worse sequel which always seems to turn out to be basically the same movie as the first only more banal and mind numbing. And we get to look forward to the theme song rapped by Will Smith. I wonder if he will rip off an old Stevie Wonder tune again this time.

    so, what you're saying, BatVomit....

    by terry_1978

is that to be black you have to have the total thug mentality, gotta sip 40's, gotta act hard as hell for no apparant reason? I can already tell you're some stupid white guy trying to spark some pointless debate.

    Men in black ,was toss!

    by horus

It was more or less a comedy remake of the far better *the Hidden* with a bit of warmed over Bluesbrothers appeal. It was a rare film in that tonnes of peaple went to see it, but very few liked it.{thats why the merchandise sold jack s**t}Plus Will Smiths on a downward spiral{Wild Wild west!!}Any sequel could easily bomb at the box office...

    Continuousture?....What the hell is continuousture???

    by kodiak_j

Man!!! What dictionary do you use? I just went to look that one up and I can't it anywhere Did you take an english class taught by Jesse Jackson with Don King as his aide? Spell check, man. Spell Check

And, BTW, thank you Terry_1978. I totally agree with you about BarVomit's view of Will Smith. True his rap credibility is right down there with Vanilla Ice, Snow, and Miilkbone (remember them?) but he's still black.

BarVomit, put your paper bag away. There is no test to see how black someone is. If you're that superficial, maybe you just need to stick to wallowing in your namesake.

Man, this script sounds terrible. This could be a great sequel, if they don't botch it like Ghostbusters 2.

MIB 2-- what the hell is Barry thinking?

    by delia97

Alright.. Im like a huge HUGE fan of the MIB and now they go and make a CRAPPY sequel?
They go and wreck a perfectly set plot from the end of MIB... ditch agent Elle... dump the LTDs... and ruin Kay's life? sheesh! We can lose the hyperactive Rita (you just wanna slap her and say "GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF, WOMAN!" when you learn she does go into hysterics at seing an alien killed (or something to that accord). We need Linda back! ELLE RULES! Ditch that rita and make MIB2 good!
