Revolution Pictures makes smart move... Puts AMERICA'S SWEETHEART up against JURASSIC PARK 3!!!

Published at:  Apr 18, 2001 3:17:48 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've been highly critical of the Joe Roth company, REVOLUTION PICTURES, for some of the dreck they decided to open their 'banner' with.... BUT finally they make their first truly smart move.... the type of move worthy of the Joe Roth we all used to know. He's decided to put his own film, AMERICA'S SWEETHEART starring Julia Roberts up against JURASSIC PARK 3!!!

Ok... first, I have no doubt that JURASSIC PARK 3 will make... opening weekend at least $20 million dollars more than AMERICA'S SWEETHEART... BUT... AMERICA'S SWEETHEART will benefit greatly from the counter programming. First off, Julia's films are seemingly invincible when she smiles really really big.... And with a title like AMERICA'S SWEETHEART.... umm, I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm willing to bet she makes flirty eyes... Exposes the whole ivory cemetary no less than 20 times in the teaser trailer...

With a script by Billy Crystal the film has a chance to far surpass Joe's past directorial stumbles... and given he NEVER had a cast like he does for this one... John Cusack, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alan Arkin, Christopher Walken, Hank Azaria and Stanley Tucci.... AND JULIA ROBERTS... ahem... This film, if good at all, will perform very well this summer.... For one, there are not many films like this this year...

Is 'Jurassic Park 3' coming out this summer?

    by psyclops

I haven't seen a freaking thing about that movie other than the tiniest of tidbits that appear online. Where's the teaser trailer? Where's the kind of hype that usually starts at least six months before the film opens? I haven't seen one thing about the film other than that stupid logo poster! Remember how 'X-MEN' kept delaying the trailer until about about mid-Spring of last year. Well, it's been past that point for 'JP3' and it has the exact same time frame as 'X-MEN'. Is the release date still for mid-July?

Should be, regardless of the lack of hype so far. Remember, there'll probably be a trailer in front of every Universal pic from Mummy Returns onwards, so pretty much everyone should be aware of it by the time of release.

I, for one cannot stand Julia Roberts. I truly hope her movie tanks. (but it probably won't, god damnit) She looks like if she laughed really hard and threw her head back, she'd split wide open.

I'd guess the Argentina release date is either wrong or out of date. As for the comparisons by ManoWar between Last Action Hero and Roberts' new flick, bear in mind that Arnold's film had some pretty poor reviews, and bad word-of-mouth from a lot of people. Had they liked it, it would have picked up more of the overspill than it actually did. Of course it would have needed to be a better film too - coming straight after T2 in Schwarzies career no wonder initial audiences were disappointed.

    Julia and her acting "ability"

    by jaka

Since a couple of others have mentioned it I will also, only a little nicer. I really do not enjoy Julia Roberts films. Mystic Pizza is really nice for the time it came out and who's in it. But I really have not liked a single film she has done since then. I usually try and avoid them like the plague and have always said I WOULD NOT pay to see them, EVER. Cable or a friends rental. I am not supplying Miss Money with any more dough on her points. But Oceans 11 may have killed that concept. I'll have to wait and see what the word is as it gets closer to release date.

Way to tell it like it is. I also admire the person who made the crack about Julia Roberts having a grin like a T-Rex. After her self-absorbed oscar speech and her shitty work in Erin brokovitch, I can't stand her. She ruins every movie she's in except Notting Hill in which she played herself. Her niece from Blow is better actress than she is. America's Sweetheart might be funny on account of the rest of the cast and a script by Billy Crystal (?), but I will never know because I will never see it. Hey, here's a question; why are there so many american films with the word "American" or "America" in the title. Do other countries do that? I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious. How come there's no Italian beauty, Belgian Psycho, or Canadian Bacon... Oh, forgot about that last one...

    Last Action hero was under-rated

    by dirty_bird

I thought the movie had it's moments, when it wasn't trying to be serious. Like seeing the SYlvestor Stallone Poster as The Terminator, or "Why do I say 'I'll be back?" "Because that's just what you say!" "But that's dumb." But Jurassic Park was a little better. I'd rather see JP3 and I'm looking forward to it. www.schwarzenegger2002.com

Last Action Hero is a poor example

    by domisinnerchild

It appealed to the same demographics (not counter-programming). It also had a Hudson Hawk vibe going into it, there was no hope (note: action films with kids as sidekicks... BAD, STOP IT HOLLYWOOD!!!!). Julie Roberts could stomp the dinosaurs. As everyone knows, romantic comedies get you laid. Friday night, when a good 40% of the crowds are asking their wives/girl friends/dates which movie to see, there's not going to be many JP's mentioned. The kids will bring their parents to JP3 and groups of guys will see it too, but I don't see anything other than horrible word of mouth slowing down the Roberts vehicle. Another factor, JP2 sucked and second sequels typically bomb.

    How fucking obnoxious is Julia?

    by rupert pupkin

She really makes my skin crawl. I would only pay to see one of her movies if it involved her getting caught in a beartrap and having to gnaw an arm off with those big chompers. JP3 should crush her. Also, don't forget American Werewolf in London and that hard-hitting gymnastics movie, American Anthem, with Wayne Gretzky's wife.

    by jamie sonil

I'm not a Julia Roberts fan either, but I did enjoy Notting Hill (which I saw in... Notting Hill... in the UK to amazing audience response), and Erin Brockovich. Both movies were actually only half as good as their boxoffice figures suggest, but it was fun watching them in such responsive atmosphere.

anyway, this is what will probably happen... JP3 will be no.1 that weekend for sure, but just like what someone mentioned above The Lost World didn't get good grades so this won't open to record numbers. As to JRobert's Sweethearts... it will probably finish second that weekend but will still cross 100 million, benefitting from the lack of genre competition.

I hope JP kicks JR all over the park. I agree that this overrated woman is annoying as hell to watch. Last movie of hers I was dragged to was My Best Friend's Wedding and all I could see was THAT LIP! And she has that horrible whiny/nasal voice. And she could pick her nose with her tongue. (Ben Bratt probably loves that part but watch those teeth boytoy!) Only reason she is "America's Sweetheart" is because she hauls in the cash. It's not about talent or skill it's all about money these days...or haven't you noticed? Even Oscar has turned into a whore for the bucks.

    Missing the JP3 Hype!

    by kenneth

As somebody mentioned on this list, where exactly is the JP3 hype? Counter programming can work and Julia is an 'A' list player but my money goes on the Dinos everytime. As a film maker I found counter programming can be a very effective marketing tool if you have no money. Take a look at my site http://www.wotr.co.uk I wish I had Universal's marketing budget pushing my film (about dragons as opposed to dinos).

Long live the dinos as opposed to yet another Rom-Com

The only movie that I've ever seen with that Roberts loser in it is "Mystic Pizza". That convinced me to never watch any movie with her in it ever again. I'm glad I didn't watch the Oscars. If I had, I would've thrown the TV out the window half way thru her acceptance speech. Think of all the money she would've cost me. What a blowhard. She's the annoying counterpart to Tom Cruise. I can't watch any movie with him in it, either.

I got out of seeing the Mexican because of it. Women control the movie dollar dammit! You people don't understand. If they don't get their way, their smiles turn from happy Julia Roberts' chompers into hideous snarling Raptor jaws. You just can't fight it. I've seen the horrors of Someone Like You and What Women Want... there is no escape. My co-worker was just recently spared from that Diary movie because it was sold out... he was one of the lucky few. Don't let this happen to you, wear sunglasses to the movies. Even a mail order bride that can't speak English can't help you. The sisterhood will find her and teach her their ways.

Lack of JP3 Hype is by design.

    by arjaybee

Director Joe Johnston has stated that he believes that too much early hype for a movie tends to be a sure fire way to kill a summer flick. It makes it more difficult to live up to increased expectations. He said something about slowly raising awareness of JP3 until right before the release. I think this is a good stratagy. It's not like the JP name is a hard sell and I think JP3 has a good chance of being as good or better than the first pic (Lost World=Temple of Doom...lazy Spielberg efforts).
