As one of the few black guys who are regulars on AICN....

    by terry_1978

come on, you know there's some truth to that. I am one of the few ones on here, to be honest. But personally, I am not all that interested in meeting Spike. The man does good work, true enough....but our views differ greatly. I mean, that shouldn't keep me from wanting to get his autograph and all, but he's never really been someone I've admired as a person.

    Spike's been making better

    by the guy

  • If anyone in LA gets to meet him, ask him if there's gonna be a director's cut of Summer Of Sam. He cut the club orgy scene drastically to avoid an NC17.

    anyone notice...

    by twig

..that Damon Wayans, star of Lee's anti-racist TV film Bamboozled, is now starring in My Wife and Kids, the very kind of sitcom that Lee's spoke out against?

    What's a nubian?

    by heywood jablowme

Damn that was a funny scene, even if you don't like Mallrats. Seriously though, you have to give Spike Lee some respect in that he doesn't churn out the same drivel over and over again each summer, ala Michael Bay/Bruckheimer. At least he gives you variety (SOS, He Got Game, X) He gives the audience a perspective on real life that not everyone gets to see or wants to acknowledge. To those who think Spike isn't keeping it real, look at what happened in Cincinnati and tell me that race relations are hunky dory. You keep making them Spike and I'll keep paying to watch them, you're one of the greats. On top of that He Got Game and X are incredible. Any asshole with a camera and a billion dollar budget can make a "Bruce Willis All-American saves the world by blowing up shit" picture.

I'm in LA. I live down the street from the virgin megastore. I was doing nothing at 7:30, and had I known this was going on I would have still stayed at home and watched the simpsons. Funny how that works out.

Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick, look at all the people gettin' all upset and bent outta shape about Spike. It's pretty amazing, the mixed but volatile reactions he gets, seeing as how he hasn't had too many big hits (in fact, his movies usually don't make much money at all). I say this not to rag on Spike, but with all the people and their big opinions about him, I have to wonder if everybody who rags on the guy has actually taken the time to sit down, watch his work and think about what he has to say. Or do they just know him as the Angry Guy, yelling from the sidelines. Nobody is gonna agree with everything he says or with the way he does some things... I don't (i'm convinced that without the lengthy prostitute sub-plot and the lingering look at excessive nudity, "He Got Game" could've been a powerful success, a good example and a sports movie that young school athletes could watch with their folks or coaches or whomever... but Spike had to show that Denzel exercised his sex-drive once he got released from jail. And that was his conscious choice). But what I love is that Spike Lee is out there trying stuff, experimenting, posing questions, making serious statements -- both flawed & sometimes right on the money.

    Daman Wayan's show, and Bamboozled

    by the tao of joe

Daman Wayan's show isnt what spike lee was referring to in Bamboozled. In bamboozled, Wayans' character couldnt get his shows greenlit because they were about middle class african americans, and so he resorted to the lowest common denominator to prove a point.

Wayan's show now, isnt the lowest common denominator by far, as his character is in fact middle class, and he is trying to teach his kids to aspire to be more than the hoodlum crackheads that they see on television. This is in fact the best family show featuring african americans in the history of television. Things could be better, but hey here's to him for making a step in the right direction.

As for spike, I love his stuff. Spike, unlike other indie maestros isnt afraid to work. He doesnt wait 5 years to make another movie (unlike say Quentin Tarrintino- get to work video lovin slacker!), he made 2 movies just this year, and both were good films. Even if you may have a problem with the way bamboozled ended, you have to admit that the first 3/4ths of the movie were indeed flawless. ( I know I could not have pulled a better ending off for such a strong and ripping peaice of satire). I always seperate the person from their work, because as was said above me, there is no way I can say anything about the person, as I do not know them. But I will say that Originality is Lee's strong point, and if you read Spike mike slackers and dykes, you will see, that spike lee has inspired another indie film buff Kevin smith more than anyone else.

    To the fellow above me

    by the tao of joe

Spike Lee did produce at least one show for fox (maybe 2), and only after 6 episodes, and very little in the way of comercial support, fox dropped it. This is actually the basis for Bamboozled's opening scene. ITS ABOUT HIM. He put up, and got shut down, because he didnt make a pimp and ho show. He made a show about a minority group of teachers in a city school system. SO they didn't act dumb, but that doesnt work for white demographics, and so, the show got canceled, only to come back as another show on fox from the producers of the practice, which features an almost all white cast, and hey since it doesn't feature a good deal of blacks as respectable non pimp and ho characters, ITS A HIT!!!!
