Wanna see Cassius Clay and Malcolm X in ALI'

Published at:  Apr 10, 2001 3:04:42 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here.... a week or so back we had reports of Cassius Clay and Malcom X walking down the streets of Harlem together... and lo and behold, now you can see it with thine own eyes. That's right, the UK's HEAT magazine grabbed a shot of the two on set and man.... Does Mario look like an image from the past or what... that's just unsettling... Here ya go...

Hello, greetings from the Just Panic Movies.

Bored with the dire releases this week at the box office (end of the school term), I ventured into town and came across Heat magazine (on the shelves today).

In it, I found this little pic of Will Smith (see below) as Muhammed Ali. In the pic you can also see Mario Van Peebles to the left and I think that's Jamie Foxx peering over Will's right shoulder (I could be wrong). Anyway thought it was a cool pic that you could use.

Cheers,

Just Panic Movies

    That picture

    by keyser195

    Whoa...that is cool.
I have to admit, I'm still skeptical about whether or not Mann can pull this off, but I was wrong to doubt the casting of Smith - he certainly looks the part at this point...

    And, like that, I'm gone...

    Could I Be First?

    by dirtyratbastard

Very convincing photo. I actually have high expectations for this project.

Will Smith is actually doing a role that makes me proud, this shows that he's just not Hollywood's flava o' de month.

    Or maybe he is...

Will looks amazing as Ali and I can't wait to see this movie. But Entertainment Tonight had a whole segment on this last week with behind the scenes footage on that very same set with those very same actors. Any chance anyone has THAT digitized?

    the token negative post

    by maxcalifornia.

Looks like Will Smith with more hair than usual if you ask me. The acid test is going be in the MOVES...does Jiggy man move like Ali. As for Mario van Peebles, well jeez I will trust Michael Mann, he has a knack for resurrecting the careers of washed up stars (e.g. Jon Voight in Heat) so maybe van Peebles will pull something good out of the bag yet. I'm waiting for a trailer to figure this one out though.

What happened to his taxi doors? How the hell are we supposed to recognize the Fresh Prince? And is that Sonny Spoon in the background?

    by triplej

Will resembles Ali. All you people have saying he doesn't, have to remember the the actor isn't going to like exactly like the real person. Jim Carrey didn't look exactly like Andy Kaufman. The same as Anthony Hopkins as Nixon or DeNiro as Jake Lamotta. Will looks enough as Ali to pull the physical part off. Now, does he have Ali's personality down??

Regarding The Comedian's Interpretation of HEAT

    by i87d

Comedian wrote:"What's the point of having Pacino & Bobby D. together if you never even see them in the same frame." hmm... You're right Comedian. I guess that's why The Godfather Part II sucked. Oh, wait a second, It didn't. It's a great film because the script doesn't require them to interact. In fact, the story is more interesting as a result. Same with Heat. PS - if you don't like the idea of filmmakers using stand-ins for shots in which only one actor is required, than i suggest you stay away from every movie made since the beginning of time. I'm not sure why you picked Heat to criticize for that though, because the P & De scenes were edited and shot quite well...

    Mali_Ocean's stupid ass

    by keyser195

Hate to flame, but I have to respond to Mali_Ocean, who implied that I'm ignorant of Michael Mann's career because I stated that I'm not sure "Ali" will be good.
Just because someone's directed good movies in the past (and I like "Manhunter," "Heat," and "The Insider" all a great deal) doesn't mean that I think they are guaranteed to only make great films. It's not anything specific about Mann - I just think that a bio-pic about Muhammed Ali starring Will Smith is kind of a dumb idea, and may just be unsalvagable. And, you also failed to realize that the bent of my post was POSITIVE! I thought it looked good! What's your damn problem?!?!?!
Not that I should even expect intelligence from someone who includes the phrase "strictly for my niggaz" when posting messages on a movie web site.
And, by the way, I don't even like comic books.

    And, like that, I'm gone...

I'm Black and I know this movie will suck!

    by brooklyn bred

Perhaps some talkbackers are posting negative comments about Smith's role as the Greatest of All Times because they are fascists I dunno'. If it's the case I wouldn't be surprised. There are a lot of David Dukes on this site. Aside from that I think the movie will blow (now that doesn't mean it won't make money because it will! In fact it will make tons of it!) mainly because Will won't be able to pull it off and Mann is casting anyone of color in it (Malcom Jamal Warner, Jaime Fox, Smith's wife). Now see if H-Town would stop the madness and give more talented people of color opportunities when movies like this come around you'd have more to choose from than Theo, Wanda from In Living Color and Woo. Right or wrong?

what the fuck are you talking about comedian?

    by crazybastard

Did you even see heat? Cause if you did, you ought to remember the last frame in the movie, where you DEFINATELY see both Al and Bobby together. How could you forget that ending?
Anyway, regarding the picture, Will Smith looks about as much like Ali as Steven Seagal looks like Gandhi.

    Mann's the man but.............

    by mel garga

Will "Wild Wild West" Smith as Ali?
Does this mean that we get a cross-promotional hip-hop song to go with the movie? Or will we get to play the Ali scratch-and-win game at our local Burger King? My point? We want fresh blood. Hypocritical Hollywood liberals have always been afraid of using unknown black actors i.e. non-bankable black actors. But Mann? I would think that the Hollywood outsider Mann would go with an unknown kid who would blow us away instead of the incredibly overrated / overexposed Smith.

New Jack Mario deserves work for no other reason than his dad having made the outstanding 'Dolemite.'

By the way, Heat was fucking great. It just moved at too slow a pace for the MTV-watching, attention deficit disorder, can't start and finish a book generation.

What a boring and unimaginative choice to play Ali...

    by batvomit

First off.....do we really even need an Ali movie? This will be just the latest of the 947854892478612583 other Ali documentaries that have already been made.
Secondly...What a lame knee-jerk unimaginative choice to have Will Fucking Smith play Ali. Is Hollywood really that unimaginative (yeah they are) or is there such a shortage of black male actors that they just had no other choice but to use Will Smith? He doesn't even look remotely like Ali and he's so overexposed and imprinted on the brain of every person in America that no matter how well he plays the part people aren't going to watch the movie and think "Wow, that's just like Ali". They are going to think "Wow, that's Will the Fresh Prince Smith trying to act like Ali". And of course we'll probably have the new Will Smith rap album to tie in with the Ali movie complete with Will Smith rapping the theme song on the soundtrack and Will Smith as Ali action figures and Will Smith as Ali McDonalds happy meals. It's gonna be marketed and exploited all to hell and whatever sort of integrity that the film might possess is going to be swallowed by a huge corporate marketing blitz. Kids who are too young to know or care who Muhammed Ali is are going to have a bastardized trivialized Fresh Prince mockery of who Ali really is imprinted on their brains....I mean I could be wrong about all of this, but I doubt anything remotely tasteful could possibly come out of a black history oriented movie starring Will Smith. He's too easily marketable for the industry not to overly commercialize and utterly suck the soul out of this movie until every penny they can possibly make has been made. Will Smith is black, but not black enough to make white people uncomfortable. He's funny and easily palatable for all the middle class SUV driving suburban families that do nothing but consume whatever the media throws at them (as long as it doesn't offend their family values) and his rap songs are bland and inoffensive...the perfect little Uncle Tom of the movie industry. He's just the wrong choice for the part. On the other hand, at least they didn't get Denzel Washington to play the part.

    by brooklyn bred

And so what Ali asked Will to play himself. Have you seen Ali lately? He probably asked Will only after his goldfish turned him down. I'd rather see WWWest 2 than this. As far as I'm concerned, the real Black superhero is Wesley and Blade 2 will prove that! Another perfect examble of Black action heroes is Vin Diesel! Actually those 2 should hook up and kick ass!

Lost you are the biggest joke I've ever encountered in Talk Back

    by brooklyn bred

Your response shows you are ignorant, completely misinformed and above all not Black! Anybody Black knows that Ali was a decent fighter yes but in a time were racism was common place the so called greatest chose to betray his own by calling another Black man (Joe Frazier) an ugly monkey. He's a hypocrite too, having preached about Black Pride then bed white women. But in retrospect I can see why he chose Smith to portray him in the upcoming train wreck based on his life. Smith also is a Tom (Bagger's Vance) and loud mouth so it does make sense. Lost comment on movies that pertain to you.
