Robert Rodriguez's ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Well, since Robert let the cat out of the bag in England this morning, I figured I'd go ahead and wake up the rest of the world...
I've been staying quiet on SPY KIDS, because I figured... what the hell... sure I love the film, but it ain't like it needs any help, it's kicking box office ass left and right (as I said it would) and a review by me would be more or less from the perspective of someone that remembers 4 year old conversations about the various ideas and concepts that would become SPY KIDS as you see it now...
At the local Austin SPY KIDS premiere, I asked Robert if SPY KIDS 2 was still going to be a pre-strike film, to which Robert said, "Nope". I then said, so ya gonna shoot something before the strike or under-the-cap... and Robert smiled... "ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO..."

My jaw fell open. Robert's been talking about ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO since I very first met him... it is his capper to the whole MARIACHI thing... His THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY.... His first WIDE-WIDESCREEN flick.... The ultimate Mexican burrito and bullets extravaganza.
Now, this isn't a done thing yet... talks have just begun. The script is at a very early state, but things seem to be coming together way faster than any rational being could conceive of.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO would take place on a far larger landscape than any of the previous films... While EL MARIACHI and DESPERADO were intimate and small... this would be a huge story... the most complex multi-character piece that Robert has attempted thus far. And it would be fun as hell. Also, like the Leone films, just because a character might've died in one of the previous films... there is a HIGH CHANCE that those actors will be back playing a different part in this film.
Nobody is signed yet, but Robert is talking about making this be... heh... Something extraordinary. Robert has already begun playing around with some of the musical themes (if you noticed on SPY KIDS he did a large portion of the score himself) and plans to redefine Mexican Orchestra SCORES with this one.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more news on ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, as Robert is working to have it moving forward quickly... oh... and it would shoot in MEXICO it looks like!!!

this is probably old news, but Robert Rodriguez was on the big breakfast
this morn plugging spy kids and happened to mention that he was currently
working on another Desperado film called "once upon a time in Mexico"
starring Antonio Banderas
didn't say much about it but he seemed to be pretty excited.
one lovely thing to see was him saying "big budgets mean the studio doesn't
give you much freedom, small budgets and more creativity are the way to go"
spot on bob.
LupeAnd this one too...
Hi Harry
Greetings from England. Today on a TV programme I managed to question Robert Roderigues about any more re-makes he would like to do. His repsonse was that he is working right now on the third installment of the singing gun-slinger films.
It is going to be called "Once upon a time in Mexico", as he is a big fan of the Good Bad and the Ugly trilogy.
He also confirmed that Antonio will be back.
If this is old news then forgive me but otherwise pls feel free to use this info.

I was really wondering what happened to Rodriguez. I'm not a Die Hard Rodriguez fan, but I think his films are a lot of fun. (It's good to have films that aren't always mind provoking as long as they aren't mind numbing.)
You can tell the guy really loves films and making movies. I hope he keeps cranking them out.

When you have no new ideas............how about another sequel?
by martin_q_blank
Love 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly'. Have no desire to see a rip-off/remake. Especially one that is also a sequel to Desperado. Why bother...........
(Looking forward to 'Spy Kids' UK release tho.) -
Since it's a sequel to Desperado, will Selma Hayek be in it? Will she get naked?
-
The most annoying thing in the world is when a sucky movie does big box office and the arrogant maggots behind the film start yappin about a sequel to said sucky movie that will continue in its sucky tradition. I felt dumber when I came out. So many continuity errors. I don't know how it's making money...I can only imagine it's because it's essentially an action movie for kids and I'm sure you can't go wrong there. Disguisting. Pathetic dialogue, weak and incoherent action sequences, and a lame story. Rodriguez, instead of being a bitch to the money (and to the Weinsteins), make a GOOD movie. The score SUCKED as well by the way. Maybe he should have acted in the movie as well. Cuz all the crew work he did was terrible. He may as well have topped it off with an Academy Award-nominable performance eh? Here's my blurb:
"F Spy Kids! LAME! WEAK! YOU WILL FEEL YOUR BRAIN CELLS POPPING!" -

Could Harry jerk off all over himself anymore than he does with Rodgriguez? He's a marginally cool director, but someone who really lost his vision after Desperado (if he ever really had any). For original and cutting edge genre work, Rodriguez isn't even on the map. He's not David Twohy or the Warchowski Brothers, he's not M. Night, he's not even Walter Hill. Speaking of, you want a cool revisionist take on spaghetti westerns, check out the completely underrated Last Man Standing. RR should watch it and take notes...
-
The excretable Last Man Standing is as much based on Kurosawa's Yojimbo as the spagetti western Lazarus referred to. It's one thing to not like RR's work, but then to suggest he should watch a brutally bad Walter Hill movie is just plain retarded. Last Man Standing is sincerely one of the worst films ever made. It's an endless stream of scenes in which Bruce Willis shows up somewhere, cracks wise, then shoots everyone he sees. it's a total piece of garbage. And I like Walter Hill!
-
I read that Rodriguez told Allred Madman would come next after Spy Kids--think it was Allred himself who said that. I wasn't crazy about Rodriguez as director anyway (I doubt he could capture the oddball, otherworldly tone of the comic), but what's the deal?
-
...but unilke BABE it doesn't transcend the kid movie dialogue. It's like the greatest movie ever made for the nickelodeon channel. Which is fine if you're eight, but I'm not, so I only found the movie reasonably entertaining. A movie like HOME ALONE is a masterpiece in comparison. No, I don't think Home Alone is a mastepiece, but it has what Spy Kids lacks, a sincere emotional undercurrent. Spy Kids was just a bunch of whiz bang, and it's themes about family are dealt with in a completely perfunctory manner. Rodriguez is improving as a director (on a superficial level), but I still think his best piece of work is El Mariachi. Sure it's cheap, badly lit and poorly dubbed, but so were Sergio Leone's early movies. It works because the story works.
-
...with hating Rodriguez? El Mariachi (cost anywhere from 7-60k to make dependin on whom you believe) was great, Desperado (7m budget) was a good popcorn muncher with incredible visuals (not just Salma), Dusk till Dawn (20m) was uneven but funny, The Faculty (15m) was almost as bad as Roadracers but just as watchable, Spy Kids (35m) would have cost Spielberg 120m to make and was a damn fine kids movie (as opposed to any Spielberg kids film save, arguably, ET). All told, Rodriguez has spent 80m total on all of his films to date. He's made that back with the grosses from Desperado and Spy Kids alone. The man started out doing a comic strip and now makes tight, cheap, entertainment while directing, sound editing, film editing, producing, and occasionally writing and scoring. If anyone is living the geek dream it's Robert. Maybe he hasn't given us Citizen Kane, but it doesn't look like he really wants to. I thought a lack of pretention counted for something in American filmmaking (as opposed to the horrific Last Man Standing). Robert is only 33 years old. We've got a lot more fun to look forward to if he doesn't burn out making Spy Kids 8.
-
can you say Clooney Banderas Hayek and Lewis...I know you can...also bring back some vampires...what the hell it'll be fun.

Cool News! RR Has Hired Me To Scout Locations For This Film....
by buzz maverik
Does anybody know where there's a nice, unguarded peyote field in Mexico? I'll have to scout in personally because you know what a stickler R.R. is. Also, for this film R.R. must promise not to watch any Hong Kong movies or DESPERADO.
-
OK, its too early to know if "....Mexico" will be any good, and I really hope it will be, but we haven't seen anything yet from Rodriguez that is even in the same ballpark as any of Leoni's movies. Also, defending Rodriguez movies because they only cost $80million is just plain daft. Who cares how much they cost? The ticket to see it costs the same, so I expect to be entertained. So far, i have left disappointed from every one of his movies except 'Mariachi'. And its not the 'lack of pretension' I hate, its lack of ambition. At least this will more 'his' movie than The Faculty. Hope Spy Kids is OK......

News for you: Star Wars = kids movie; most Anime = kids movies i
by i am_notreal
geeks who rail on the Toilet Paper Movie are only mourning their lost youth. All together now: STAR WARS MOVIES ARE KIDS MOVIES AND I WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO IMPOSE MY SEMI-ADULT SENSIBILITIES ON THEM. THEY ARE CHILDISH BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE FOR CHILDREN. KIDS MOVIES NEED TO MAKE SENSE TO KIDS, AND STAR WARS DOES. AND KIDS LIKE JAR-JAR. Feel better? You should. If you were 6-10, "Spy Kids" would be the coolest movie in the world...almost as cool as TPM.
-
E.T., Star Wars, Indiana Jones. They are all KIDS movies that can be immensely enjoyed by adults without having to stoop to a child's level. Spy Kids is not that type of movie, and while it's far less obnoxious than most movies made for children, I think your average adult will only be mildly entertained by it. And I wasn't saying Home Alone has a lot of emotional depth, only more than Spy Kids does by comparison. So do Babe and E.T. (two movies that truly transcend the kid movie genre). Saying Spy Kids is a movie made for kids does not excuse it from criticism. That's like saying Mission Impossible 2 is just an action movie, so it doesn't need a good story or characters, just a lot of explosions.

Mr. Touchdown Is Right About SPY KIDS; Might Or Might Not Be Rig
by buzz maverik
STAR WARS as a kids movie is a big cop out by George Lucas and his fanatics, as opposed to fans. I was 13 when the first one came out and this was in the era of ROCKY, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, TAXI DRIVER, etc. There weren't many non-Disney kid movies out, most of us hadn't been programmed to like kid movies and at 13 I would have hated a kid movie far more than I would now. STAR WARS had a hip, funny, teen vibe (to use the "lingo" of the day) that was a big part of what made us like it. Han and Leia were essentially cool young 1970s adults dropped into a space fantasy, so we could relate to them. That was my biggest bitch with THE PHANTOM MENACE. Everyone was so goddam sincere and Jedific. We didn't have a Han Solo who was trying to put some moves on the Queen, or a Queen that would have told the Jedi to take those sticks out of their asses and who might take control of her own rescue. Another point about the STAR WARS for kids thing being a cop out, Lucas and (much worse) the hard core fans take the whole Force thing and the religous aspects with dead seriousness until you point out "Uh, but I thought the Jedi were supposed to trust their feelings, so how come they didn't want to let Anakin in on the secret handshake because he had feelings." That's when they scream, "IT'S A KIDS MOVIE!" Well, it either is or it isn't. Like the great Jedi Miyagi Ar Nold once told his Padawan San Daniel Macchi Ooo:"Walk on the left side of the road, you are safe. Walk on the right side of the road, you are safe. Walk down the middle, get hit by a truck."
-
I just want to take this moment - which is as good o' time as any I guess - to express my utter disgust and disappointment with the fact that the jags at Dimension/Miramax/Disney released a huge, nicely stacked, double disc version of a great romp of a movie FROM DUSK TILL DAWN on to DVD without maing the fucking thing ANAMORPHIC!! For that reason alone (based on strict moral values) I know myself and many of my friends had to not purchase this disc - and now sit around hoping that in 3-10 years Dimension might actually make this thing available, for all to enjoy.

Well, now, Buzz, I reckon that depends on how you define "kids,"
by i am_notreal
13 seems pretty young to me. Certainly not adult. Teenager, yes...but still a kid. Star Wars IS meant for the younger set. If it appealed to you at 13 it doesn't mean you can't still like it. I liked TPM and can realize why I didn't like it as much as Star Wars...because I'm not a kid (whatever age parameters you want to put around the term) anymore. I'm not like the Comic Book Guy who feels Lucas "owes me" for "being a fan." Thus my expectations weren't too high--I wanted an enjoyable time & a few moments of recaptured youth, and TPM delivered the goods on both counts, quite well as a matter of fact. But you won't catch me wringing my hands over Jar Jar or any other damn thing because IT'S A MOVIE THAT'S PRIMARILY FOR KIDS. A grown filmgoer complaining about implausible action in a movie about two kids who save their secret agent parents from an evil superspy?!?!? It's like putting your lips around a car tailpipe and complaining about the burns, for crap's sake.

Suggestion from Benjamin Bratt to Robert Rodriguez . . .
by sideblaster ted
I'm going to get right to the point: You must me in your film. Why? Because, like you, my career thrives off of being associated with 1 hugely overrated piece of cinema. Me, Ms. Julia Roberts. You, some craptapulous low budget gong show that ain't worth its weight in caca. Us teaming would be a match made in limbo. Perhaps I could even convince Ms. Roberts to make an appearance. And I promise her acting won't be half as bad as it was when she made that ultra-phoney Oscar acceptance speech. I will work for no money and free hand and/or blow jobs for the entire cast & crew. Toodles!

The Thing Is, I Like TPM As An Adult, But I'm Pretty Sure I Woul
by buzz maverik
I was 13 in 1977. Kids today are supposed to be more sophisticated, but it seems like everybody in general is more juvenile. While I'm in the TPM camp on the whole stupid TPM vs. THE MATRIX thing at my current age, I'll bet you I would have been in THE MATRIX camp at 13. I love SPY KIDS now, but I wouldn't have gone near it if it had come out in '77. Watch THAT '70s SHOW. If the Kelso character were a little less goofy, the Forman character were a little edgier and the Fez character were not around, those were basically the older kids that we idolized who called up dipshits and told us to get lost and sold us pot. We would have pushed Jackie aside to get anywhere near Donna. And Hyde, that would have been the guy...first time I saw that character I thought it was the biggest stoner and (best athlete )in my town in the late '70s who all us little shits worshipped. Now, we all forget our childhoods as Stephen King has said, but some of us stay in touch, and I'm fairly well in touch with the bong hittin', STAR WARS lovin', Farrah Fawcett poster mastrabatin', Led Zepplin listenin' little bastard that I was. Watch OVER THE EDGE, Matt Dillon's first movie. Welcome to my middle school! Those characters, and the people they represent, might have gotten off on STAR WARS but they would have torn the place apart if you'd have shown them TPM. So I feel that STAR WARS are not kids movies. I've said before in talkbacks that I like a lot of things about TPM that most people don't like such as Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd's performance. But what I don't like is something that no one ever seems to mention, which is cool characters like Han and Leia that real people can relate to. But to a dedicated fan, that criticism is just a call to trot out the "kid's movie" cop out. Also, although I am a staunch capitalist, I do feel that George Lucas owes the hard core fans big time. He doesn't owe someone like me, who casually likes his movies, but oddly enough, I think he owes you guys who staunchly defend every move he makes and apologize when his moves aren't so good. He owes you the movies that you love him too much to demand.

Why do people like Robert "I suck big fat swollen balls" Rodrigu
by urethra franklin
Jeesus. Am I the only one who thinks all of his moivies look like sub-"made for Cinemax" Frank Stallone/American Samurai/Walker Texas Ranger horse puckey????? Good god, why is El Mariachi heralded as some kind of "indie" masterpiece. It's an indie piece of shit. It is cornier than my shit after a Orville Reddenbacher eating contest. And "Dusk Til Dawn"????? What a steaming LOAF! You could rename it "Insert 80's action movie cliche HERE". I am not impressed with ANYTHING he has ever done except maybe that little short in "Four Rooms" which was kind of funy cus there was a dead hooker in a mattress. I seriously don't know why movie critics I usually agree with jizz their pants whenevver Rodriguez is mentioned. IT BAFFLES ME. I am going to go defecate now and wipe my butt with a Desperado poster.
-
Will he twist like a cat in midair? I re-watched Desperado this weekend. Some of the dialogue is pretty cheezy, but the humor is great and I like the fact that the male lead is as sexy as the female. Could've used a deeper plot, though. And please, NO CROTCH WEAPONS!
-
Did I actually read somebody liked that movie? Wow, I really wanted to like that piece of crap, but I'm pretty sure I fell asleep.
-
If you look at drafts of the early SW script, Han is even more morally ambiguous than he was in the final version. Not to mention that if Star Wars is for "kids" why did Lucas wait until the rerelase to cut out the scene where Han shoots Greedo first? This silly revisionist theory really holds no water. The themes in the original SW are very broad and appeal to all ages. Also, the entire film revolved around a single character, Luke. You were able to channel your feelings through him. Need I mention that it's not often a child actor is good enough to be the center of a film? I don't blame Jake Lloyd, though, he had some horrible dialogue and kind of drifted from scene to scene with nothing to do.
-
I'm as baffled as you are about all the acclaim RR seems to receive. I think it has to due with this rep he has of getting things done really cheap and quick. The problem is, you can TELL they were made cheap and quick.
-
Ya know, when El Mariachi firsted arrived on the scene, Robert Rodriguez was THE up and coming young film maker along with Tarantino. You heard again about him with "From Dusk Til Dawn" and "Desperado", then he just kinda flopped. While the man has some talent, I think he believed his own hype. I know he thinks it's cool that he can write, direct, and do every other thing on the film, but should he? I mean, that's why there are EXPERTS out there that have been doing it for years. The director should DIRECT his people, not take over from them. The thing that happened to his movies was that they were all kind of stale. As romantic as it sounds, "One man's visions" do not always make a great film. You NEED others to help keep each film fresh and original. Oh, and I have to agree that Harry kisses Rodriguez's ASS WAAAY too much. He may be cool in Austin, but he's not very well known, or cared about much, in the rest of the country. While I think he has (or had) potential, most people really don't care for his style of movies.
-
I think most directors would be happy to have El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk 'Til Dawn, and Spy Kids on their list of films. All his movies are what they are. Desperado is a fun comic book action flick. I'd rather watch that again than 99% of the crap action movies that are pumped out weekly by the studios. El Mariachi is one of the better independant movies I've seen (not claiming a lot of experience, but you can't argue it wasn't a good first effort). From Dusk 'Til Dawn is simply a B Movie. And for all of you that hated the second half. Think how great it would have been if you DIDN'T KNOW it was a vampire movie. The marketing blew that film, it was all about the twist of turning it from a Gangster Movie into a vampire gore fest. I wish more movies were clever enough to try to blend genres and throw such a massive twist in a movie as that. All his movies are fun people, there's nothing wrong with that. As for the Faculty, do you think that the reason is was so/so was explained by his comment of studio's = big money but less control? That movie was a freaking Tommy Helfinger add.
-
Robert Rodriguez is the shit. This movie is gonna rock!. P.S. I didn't see Spy Kids, so I'm not judging Robert off what I thought would be a piece of crap from the start.
-
I just don't get it. It was never advertised as being for adults. Just because Rodriguez wants to branch out doesn't give people the right to say the kind of movie he should be doing. Really, he is an individual, and not subject to your personal whims. The whole story behind this movie was when he was filming the Misbehavers short for Four Rooms, he thought it would be funny to do a spy family film. Have you seen the Misbehavers? It was just totally fun and full of humor. What's wrong with Rodriguez just running with a fun idea? I swear, I can be critical as hell, but just because Rodriguez made an indie film that got a lot of attention doesn't mean that's what he has to do until the day he dies. Personally, I agree with most people on this forum. Desperado was a comic book, Dusk 'Til Dawn had a great first half, and The Faculty was utter crap. Maybe Desperado seems like his take on Woo, but let's not forget the guy is friends with Tarantino, who also got lots of insipration from Woo. Everything is derivative these days, you just have to make something that stands out. For me, the thing that's very unique about Rodriguez is his sense of humor -- it's the one constant in all of his films. Sometimes it works to his advantage (Misbehavers) and other times it doesn't (Dusk 'Till Dawn). But let's not forget this is a young guy, and I don't see him going around talking about himself like he thinks he's the end-all-and-be-all of filmmaking. Reserve your hateful posture for people like that.
-
get down on the guy that directed Rush Hour, Brett Ratner. There's a guy that's directed a couple of music videos and goes on about himself like he's Kubrick. Everyone says he's "brilliant" after he directed Family Man. You may have heard people calling Rodriguez genius after El Mariachi, but you'd never hear that ego reflected by Rodriguez himself. He reminds me of Kevin Smith, except for he can direct. Maybe those two should team up.
-
Then why did it fare better with critics than say, Gladiator? (www.rotten-tomatoes.com) I know! It's because critics ALWAYS prefer kid's movies to epics, and cynical talkback queens are smarter than ANYONE!
-
Bet you'll all stand up for Russ Meyer even though his films all look, sound and are acted like shit (even Charlie Napier, whose good in other stuff.) He writes, directs, edits etc... But his tuf has breasts in them and since most of the people - by the evidence in ALOT of the TB's - on the site are raving closet rapists, it probably figures that you wont criticise old Russ. Challenge for you. Go out and make a movie THAT WORKS AND SELLS TICKETS AND MAKES MONEY AND THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE LIKE ACTUALLY THANK YOU VERY MUCH for pitence and then WE'LL sit down and destroy YOU with words if it's not an absolute gem straight off. Like to see that happen...shyeah right you ball-less plebs. Not even on of you could. So shutthefuckup and write your own (bound to be) poorly selling fanzine or something. You bother us all!

Rodriguez is essentially out to entertain the general public...
by fitzy funk
This is the assumption I came to after watching Spy Kids, an entirely pleasant, if not comatose kid's movie. The Faculty was essentially the same thing for teeny-boppers (I actually liked it, too *shrugs*), just as the way Desperado pleased fans of the action genre (unless they had seen the prequel). The only times he had really flirted with anything more than pleasing a specific fan base was with El Mariachi (simply because it was his debut), and the first 40 minutes of From Dusk Till Dawn (thanks to Tarantino, who will most likely end up a much more studied director after all is said and done. Rodriguez's room in Four Rooms was arguably the best episode in an admittedly bad film. And I haven't seen Roadracers. My conclusion: Rodriguez is certainly competent, but he doesn't have enough confidence in his audience to make a truly interesting and creative film, unlike say, Proyas Tarantino, Fincher, and Spike Jonze. Just my take
-
was cut because of the MPAA. it was supposed to be another shootout but it had to be cut if they wanted an R rating. rodreguez talks about it on the commentary on the dvd (the one with both el mariachi and desperado) that i just listened to yesterday.

Go check the reviews for See Spot Run, Snow Day & Baby Genuses than get back to me.
RR never said that he had given up on violent films. He said that he made Spy Kids because he wanted to do something other than R-ratecd action for a change. He never said that he had sworn off of violence. In the artical that I read the only thing he was putting down was people who take their 5 year olds to see movies like Desperado.
