Pictures from the infamous Airport Construction set of MATRIX 2!!!

Published at:  Apr 04, 2001 12:28:36 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with our spy in the sky above Alameda... snapping shots at the developing set of MATRIX 2.... seems like an extension of the 'alleged' massive car chase sequence in the film. And dear god, that seems like a large stretch of highway to be building.... but I guess if they are going to be filming the most astounding car chase in the history of cinema... building your own highway where YOU MAKE THE RULES.... You control the vertical and the horizontal... well I guess that's important. Damn the Wachowskis are damn serious about this flick... looks huge...

After the all the photos from the set that AICN's been leaking, I think it's about time to fire the entire security team for the production. I mean... if you can't keep a bunch of geeks with cameras away, what good are you?

How much can they really do on this stretch of road?

    by domi'sinnerchild

They can do some big crashes and so forth, but it's not like an extended chase can occur mostly on this area of road. A car can cover that much road in what, 10 seconds?

On closer inspection, these photos are obviously fake. This "Sharon Phillips" character obviously built these "sets" in her backyard on a 1:1,250 scale and then took pictures from a step ladder. Those buildings and sailboats? Obviously toy and models used as set dressings to complete the illusion. Faker than the moon landing.

So we see there will be a car chase followed by a longer car chase with a gun fight, and then guess what yet another car chase.

What exactly happens in this movie other than gun fights, car chases, and zero grav kung-fu battles? Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Just a concern I have with the car chase rumours. if as someone previously mentioned there will be cameras along the walls so that the bullet time effects could be reproduced in the car chase scene won't that get just a little repetitive? i mean all the great car chases being mentioned here go on for a long time how many times can you do bullet time in one scene before it gets annoying?

Someone leaked a brief storyboard for this film? It showed Neo fighting an agent surrounded by burning cars and traffic. Could this be the set of a fight scene? Is that why they built a short stretch? They wouldn't need a long one and they'll probably destroy it. Anyway, I'm sure we'll get pictures of the filming here.

    car chases

    by kerilli

the best ever, no contest: RONIN. (+ saw a documentary about the film, that showed them adding all sounds e.g. tyre squeals, engine noises at a later date - is this normal procedure?
Can't wait for more pics/info on Matrix 2, but... surely if Neo can fly, is not bound by normal laws of physics etc (and he's had all this time to teach Trinity a few more tricks) then car chases are a bit mundane, earthbound, etc? Just a thought.

    by el buitre

Besides the fact that they didn't use any blue screen or cgi stuff, the car chases in Ronin are cool for using European cars in being set in places like Nice and Paris. I thought that was a refreshing break fromm the usual car chases we see in movies.

is that of THE ROCK. C'mon, a Ferrari chasing a Humvee? It is the coolest one by far. RONIN might be the most realistic, but who goes to the cineplex for realism. Anyway, considering Bay had only 2 blocks to film the entire chase, I say it is kick-ass! Plus the score is awesome.

Here's what this scene is going to be about...AICN or somebody h

    by mesma mahar

I posted this last time but it was too late and nobody saw it. A while back somebody leaked info that they were storyboarding the MOTHER OF ALL CAR CHASE SCENES for the next Matrix movie. The report mentioned something about the complexity of it and that they were probably going to have to construct a road to shoot it. Basic concept is this: Major car chase with all the rigs we've been hearing about, the twist is that everytime the good guys waste and agent and the car veers off the road and blows up, THE AGENT JUST ASSUMES THE BODY OF ANOTHER DRIVER IN A DIFFERENT CAR. So you can imagine the potential here, you shout the tire out, the car crashes, BOOM, now the Agent is in the Oldsmobile next to you shooting at you, and the 70 year old retired lady whose sitting next to what used to be her viagra-addicted husband is screaming her fucking head off. You blow up the Olds, and he shows up and assumes the hopped-up-on-amphetamines truck driver behind you in the fast lane, or he becomes a passenger on the bus that's sitting in the window right along side of you with the perfect kill shot angle. Bottom line, its a fucking great concept, and its why I liked the first Matrix movie...its a thing I like to call "Shit you've never seen before". The first one was full of it, and thats why this car chase will be like...nothing you've ever scene. Fuck Ronin, this will put that car chase to shame, I guarantee it.

The best car chase scenes were on TV not the big screne.

    by ravage

The mother of all car chases has to be THE DUKES OF HAZZARD. Think about it you get 3 chases per show, tires sqeel on dirt, bridges out, road construction, more police cars getting banged up than Cooder can scratch his head at. Then there is the cut away jumps where they cut to a commercial in the middle of a jump only to hear Waylon Jennings say "boy this looks bad" then cut back to a totally diffrent landing. You get a car that can jump through a barn out run the sheriff. After that meet up at the Boar's Nest for a couple of drafts and the sweet songs of Johnny Paycheck "Take this job and shove it".Now you tell me better chase scenes than those, by the way what did Uncle Jesse do at the dinner table that was so damn funny in the opening credits."Fighten the system like two modern day Robin Hoods"."YEAH; YEAH; HA

What I think this scene will be like!!!! Bullet Time Walls? 10

    by kampbell-kid

Reference to the previous talkback I too remember that post a couple months ago. I think this 30min car chase scene will be this putting all the facts we have so far together. SCENE BEGINS!! Trinity & Morpheus start the car chase in town while being chased by the Virii, crash bang boom etc etc out of the city into tunnels and then eventually out onto the highway where the chase sceene climaxs. I think it's mabye Virii that shift from car to car but the agents might be still thrown into the mix. Shift, shift from car, to bus, to truck, etc etc to finally where Neo steps in to try and help finish them off which probably ends with a wire-fu fight over traffic a la Crouching Tiger to where Neo kicks lots of Virii/Agent ass surrounded by traffic distruction from the previous chase. END SCENE!! A long ass shoot that will be edited into a 30min scene. End of story get over it and stop making moronic illogical assumptions like bullet time in the walls when bullet time camaras go in circles... last I recall the walls looked straight for a mile and the purpose of bullet time is to capture and rotate around a moving object in real time. More facts, think about it... What is a virus? Virii are probably like agents but they infect the matrix, so I'd think Neo as well would have that weakness against a virus. I knew that after Neo got such cheezy minipulation over the matrix in terms of self powers that only a virus could bring him down to their level. Does anyone remember Superman II, where he is againts the three enemies with his same abilities. Neo has control and a virus takes control.

Fake? No. It has been beautiful here also.

    by jaka

I don't no if anyone has refuted the fake claims, or if it was just a joke, but it is most definitely real. It's the Alameda Naval Base runways. The base is on the island of Alameda (where my best friend lives) and has been closed for years. The canal in the background is the San Francisco Bay running between Alameda and the city of Oakland. You can get from the base to the locations shown in Oakland earlier this week in about 10-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Coincidently, the shots shown in Oakland are only 25-30 blocks from some of my other really good friends. It's been cool to know that I will get to see the places I frequent on film. The weather has been damn chilly lately, but clear and beautiful spring days, for the most part.

scifiboyuk, What?? Okay I liked the Ronin chase scene too but the rest is shite (as you say in englund) and ATR, what do you mean NO CG??? Hello!? That part when the tires smoke up in the square, The freakin smoke was the most horrible CG Ive ever seen!! How did you miss that?? Oh and you ever wonder how they do looong chases in movies?? Have you ever seen Scent of a woman? That ferrari scene that seems to go for like 16 blocks? Watch for the bridge at the end, Its the same bridge you see near the start of the scene too! 4 blocks equals 16 blocks on camera if you have a great editor and director! The Warschows...Wachuska...Wahshra... Whatever the hell there names are! they're gonna make this chase last forever in that much road.

    ummmmmmm, NO!

    by son of the suns

Lets think about this. Why would an agent ever chase a car when he can re-appear in the vehicle in front and shoot back.
Why use the automated weapons that we've seen in the pics when they could use rocket launchers a la back to the future.
Now i'm pretty certain that there was a pic of Neo in the car. FIrst off, why be in a car? Secondly why worry about being shot, he can stop bullets. Not only that, but if he gets hit by one he can come back to life. The reason why we've never seen this done before is because it doesn't make sense.

I read the matrix 2 script,

    by mr_marbles

Here's how it panned out, trust me I don't care if I get fired for this, I can get a job elswhere.
Let me tell you how the shite is gonna hit the fan, At the start of the film, we find Neo in the matrix meeting with the oracle, she tells him there is a storm a brewing, and that People are going to have to be very resiliant in the days ahead. He doesn't understand exactly what she means, until all hell breaks loose and the agents begin attacking, but instead of using the typical agents they are using Virii, here we see some of the zero G kung fu in a big scene where everything is getting demolished, but the Virii are different, they effect the matrix differently, creating things as they wish just as Neo does, and worse they can effect Neo so that he can't fight at the best of his ability. The virii are bad for the Matrix, but the agents believe it is the only way to flush out neo and the rebels. Afterwards neo becomes infected by the virus and isn't allowed back into the matrix. but it is the exact opposite for the others (TRINITY, and MORPHEUS) they can't get out. Now Neo has to find a way to hack into the matrix in the real world as a normal man so he can get back into the matrix and save Morpheus and Trinity before they end up dead. He gains the aid of Morpheus's woman - jada Pinket Smith and other humans from Zeon to Storm the Robots main CPU and get rid of the Virii.

As this is happening Trinity and Morpheus need to survive the constant attacks from the virii and agents by way of car chase, fight scenes and what have you.

In the end the virii, being a virus and all becomes self aware and deicdes to destroy the matrix, this causes the Agents to have to go against them as well. So that their entire crops won't be lost as well as their entire mainframe.

In the later portion of the film Neo learns some things about the Robots as well as what the matrix "REALLY" is. Finally allowing himself to hack back into the matrix and kick some ass Zero G style all while fighting multiple virus trying to destroy the matrix and life as we know it.

has to be in THE TERMINATOR. When Reese and Sarah are being chased by the cop car driven by Schwarzenegger, out of the car park and onto the freeway. The way they kept blasting at each other with those shotguns was awesome, and Brad Fiedel's music just added to the frantic tension.

Top TEN best car chases EVER!

    by wee willie

#1. Road Warrior - the final chase. #2. Raiders - The Truck Chase #3. Ronin - wrong way in France #4. The Hitcher - take your pick (a personal fave, I know I'm gonna get creamed over this) #5. Terminator II - Truck and Motorbike. #6. Terminator II - Helicopter, then truck #7. French Connection - because of the way Freidken shot it, the irresponsible magnificent bastard. #7. Tie - Opening scene of Lethal Weapon II, and the one that ends with the surf board smashing the guy's head in Lethal II #8. DUEL - the whole fuckin' movie #9. The Last Boy Scout "B-O-M? That spells fuck you in polish!!!") and finally, #10. And I hate to put this on here because it's alternately a great movie and a stupid piece of shit - The Blues Brothers, when that Nazi car goes off the freeway, inexplicably shoots thousands of feet into the air and just as they're about to hit the ground the one Nazi turns to the other and says "I've always loved you."

I didn't include the one from Bullit because it has not aged well at all, it's a bunch of lame static shots of cars speeding by, which is the wrong way to shoot a car chase.

Hmmm...it seems that you have ALL forgotten about not only the best car chase, but the original car chase that set the standard for ALL of the other car chases you have mentioned...the final non-stop 45 MINUTE LONG car chase that ended the original GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS! Written by, produced by, directed by, stunt co-ordinated by, and driven by the late, great Toby Halicki!
