Fox To Delay MENACE

Published at: March 29, 2001, 7:35 p.m. CST by staff

I am – Hercules!!

I think this may be another Coax exclusive.

You know those little promos that run during “Boston Public” and “The Simpsons” and “Dark Angel?” The ones with the pod racer flying across the screen intimating that “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” will be airing on Fox April 29?

It’s not gonna happen.

Look for those promos to cease.

The first broadcast airing of TPM has been delayed till next season’s November sweeps.

Lucasfilm is said to be concerned about the low viewing levels available for a family-oriented film once Daylight Savings Time goes into effect.

If you heard it hear first, REMEMBER that you hear it here first.

Move Along!

I am – Hercules!!

    Something About Mary runs instead

    by Agent_99

Who hasn't seen this on cable or DVD a hundred times?? I'm sure all the good stuff will be bleeped anyway.

    no shit

    by Studio Snitch

No offense, but if George had put as much thought into his story and characters as he did his technology maybe PAHANTOM MENACE wouldn't have sucked. OK, begin balcklist, bashing, letter bombs, etc. now.

  • March 29, 2001, 8:44 p.m. CST

    Oh darn...

    by gary2012

Now we have to wait until November to see a half screen version of a film that we have all seen numerous times spread out over four hours of comercials. Seriously, does anyone who reads AICN care about the TV showing of TPM? Either you already own the video, or you don't like the film and wouldn't watch it anyway. We get this "reporting", but not one mention that William Hanna died this week.

That's the only explanation which makes sense to me (even though this was posted a few days too early)

    THIS REALLY SUX

    by ARETE 4

I SEE HOW IT IS. GEORGE LUCAS DIDN'T WIN ANY OSCARS AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS AND THEN HE STARTED GETTING JEALOUS AT THE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING LIKE ANG LEE OF CROUCHING TIGER AND RIDLEY OF GLADIATOR. SO HE MADE THIS LAME EXCUSE TO PISS HIS FANS OFF BECAUSE HE BELIEVES AFTER HE MAKES THE MOVIES ITS THE FANS WHO NEED TO DO THE REST AND MAKE HIS MOVIES SEEM LIKE THEY ARE THE BEST THINGS EVER MADE ON EARTH.

  • March 29, 2001, 9:54 p.m. CST

    say what now?

    by Twig

He's worried about viewership after daylight savings? Uh, this was gonna air FOUR WEEKS after daylight savings.

    To People's Poet

    by Bad Guy

Actually, there was a whole talkback dedicated to William Hanna. You must've missed it. On TPM airing on TV. What real movie fan cares about seeing it edited and filled with ads for Doritos and Pepsi. I've been totally spoiled by video, laserdisc and DVD. I never watch movies on commercial TV anymore. Have you ever tried watching the edited for TV version of Goodfellas? Pure hilarity.

  • March 29, 2001, 10:27 p.m. CST

    Damn Fox too.

    by robopimp

I bet it was Fox's desicion. They wanted to replace The Phantom Menace with "When Babies Attack" or "When Janitor's go crazy" or maybe a reality show about 6 employees at McDonald's who struggle to flip burgers..

    Various Ramblings...

    by Dlhstar

Why DLS Time might be the reason for the push back? Perhaps because the late April air date is fairly close to the start of the Summer film season and a possibly hit film might be released within the next month that could draw away viewers. Also, since it's daylight out longer, more kids and 'dults are out there getting ready for their little sporting events. I think its a fact that the worse the weather out is, the better a TV show's ratings. As to 'why people would watch this?' Because not all of us own the video, and those that do would probably be content to just throw a tape in and record the Maul fight scenes. Additionally, as any time something shows up on TV, while there is the certainty of cut scenes, we also have the hope of EXTENDED scenes. It would be like watching Army of Darkness on USA a few years ago and seeing a few scenes that were neither on my Japanese LD dup or the regular video release of the film.

    Vicious Circle

    by MCVamp

The hype of Episode 2's first theatrical trailers aer supposed to slightly boost the ratings of Episode 1, which will probably be showing the teaser for Episode 2...it's all in the hyping. I'm sure the first Matrix 2 teasers will be hitting in August or September to try and head SW off at the pass. As long as that supposed Fall/Winter DVD release of TPM isn't pushed into "indefinite," I could care less about TV showings. All I know is that the letterbox VHS copy is all touchy because they stuck a documentary on there and shoved as much tape into the case as possible. I hate extended VHS tapes. The single tapes of Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction were like that too. Damn Commies...oops...that's a different post.

Can't he just add the audience in digitally?

So if not many people watch it, they can still say that every person on the planet saw it - they can add the entire population of the earth into the audience. Surely they can do that?

    by Darth Tenor

    TPM DVD??????

    by Jokers Wild

Ok I've heard a lot of talk about this lately....what I don't get is why would Lucus release TPM on dvd and not release the original trilogy. Now does this make any sense. From what I had heard a while back Lucus was waiting till all six movies were made until he released them on dvd. I couldn't care less about TPM on dvd I want New Hope and Empire. NOW!!!!!

    by DO

Those adverts have been running on British TV for the past month, and Sky are showing all 3 original movies in Special Edition format (widescreen, surround sound) then Menace on April 7th. Just thought I'd rub that in. I doubt we'll get the DVDs first, though... will ANYBODY see those...?

    TPM

    by Varakor

Ohk i had to say this but to Walrus-man: are u getting excited about watching Phantom menace on Television, when most of us can watch the damn thing just by popping in the tape and watching it in its UNEDITED form FREE from commercials? april 29th will be a "big" day for all canada right? i mean have u read the majority of the talkbacks here? who cares if it doesn't air here. we're not losing out but hey you and canada have yourself a nice time watching TPM. blame canada? indeed. secondly: This whole daylight savings thing is pretty much bull and we all know it because people (like the sheep they are) will still gather around the tube and watch tpm no matter what the time is and fox will score some pretty hefty ratings. so the only person who really loses is fox on this and not viewers who a) already own the tape (or if your lucky bootleg DVD) or b) can just go buy the tape (or bootleg DVD)

LOOK KIDS!!! The KKK has taken residence at AICN!!!

    by AtomoPrime

Hey 'I SHOW NO MERCY' please refrain from rearing your bigoted racist views in this or Talk Back on AICN! And Harry, could you hire somebody to monitor these Talk Back submissions a little more closely? This dumb-asses coments like "...all of you niggers blaming Lucas should..." and "...ignorant gorilla monkey-ass nigger mentality..." not to mention "...obvious the academy is run by dirty jews." This kind of ignorant banter surely falls outside of normal Talk Back and is subject to your own rule "...hate speech are all fodder for deletion. In other words, being a jerkwad loser will get you banned." Dump this guy and post a memo concerning this foul trend. Make a stronger stand Harry, or else these dickweeds will sprout up all over the Talk Backs. As for FOX and SW:TPM, there saving it for easy ratings if the SAG and WGA strikes last longer than expected. Since FOX is in possesion of the broadcast rights to SW:TPM, FOX controls when it airs. You people give Lucas to much credit.

  • March 30, 2001, 9 a.m. CST

Well, if we can't watch TPM...

    by RedneckJedi

after DST, then might as well just shut down ALL TV programming until fall, since there will apparently be NOTHING BUT LOW RATINGS FOR ANYTHING ON TV until DST comes around again. That's the mentality at work here. Golly, why not show it now, and then 7 months later? Like network TV hasn't broadcast a world premier movie twice in one year??? Show your Ep. 2 trailers during the second airing, and get ever BETTER ratings than the April airing Fox!

Phantom Menace airs in South Africa on April 22!

    by Zonkk

Yes, you read that right. MNet - a pay/subsciption channel in Southern Africa - broadcast on normal terrestial and satellite channels - will be premiering The Phantom Menace on April 22. So, for us here in deep dark Africa, we will be watching The Phantom Menace on digital satellite, with dolby surround sound and absolutely NO advert breaks at all. Before you. Nyaa nya nya nyaa nyaa ;-)

    Sweeps, Strikes, and The TICK

    by LeeW

One of the other reasons for the push back of TPM is for strike insurance. That is why we haven't seen The Tick or Night Visions. FOX is holding those shows for the fall in case they don't have new episodes of their other shows. This also allows them to air an additional episode of The X-Files during sweeps (and due to that, they are pre-empting X-Files on Sunday April 15th and throwing in extra repeats of The Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle that night. Jar Jar Stinks

    by Anai

Perhaps a more practical reason for Lucas's pullout has to do with the fact that most advertisers don't want to pay the high rates for advertising slots that FOX is asking - AND they don't want to associate their products with the decidedly negative and stereotypically inane Jar Jar Binks.

A racist is a racist is a racist. Get the picture, "I Show No Mercy"? You can't fill your posting with racist/antisemitic rantings and then say, "Ha-ha, I'm a spic myself, so I can write this!" Call Phantom Menace bashers pathetic geeks if you want, but lay off the racial slurs.

    by majorq007

Boy, Herc's got all the big news! A movie that everyone has on video in WS will be shown on TV with commercials and bad PS not next month as planned but next NOVEMBER????? WOW! Groundbreaking work, guys, what an exclusive! What's next? BIG news that next fall ER will premiere the WEEK AFTER Friends? Oh, wow! At any rate, my thoery is that Lucas will have the world premiere of the EP II trailer during TPM in November, which is the REAL reason he pushed it back.

And what are YOU repressing, I Show No Mercy?

    by Hardyboy

I never said that I DID speak for everyone, numbnuts. The fact you invoked racist and anti-Semitic slurs and apparently expected no one to take offense pretty much indicates the level of your thinking; and the fact you called me and a guy who lives thousands of miles away from me gay lovers proves how juvenile you really are. "I Show No Mercy," there are plenty of sites on the worldwide web where intellectual primates can indulge in all the racist ranting they want: I suggest you log on to one of those sites, and leave AICN to those of us who like to talk about movies and indulge our Inner Geeks. Oh, wait--on those sites you'd be dismissed as an inferior "mud person." Guess you can't win, can you?

    To Mr. Enigma...

    by LlGHTST0RMER

Just a few things.... >>"CG tech has given Lucas the ability to putting the things he has in his head, and put them on the screen. If you are a movie maker, to be able to do that is a fabulous thing. Yet, you fucking wanks think that Lucas using this tech is wrong. That it takes away from the story. [T]hat he spent more time on blue screen then with the story. ...STAR WARS needs this technology."<< The part about what a gift the technology is... true; very true. However, by that same argument, the technology that allowed him to take his ideas and put them onscreen exactly as he envisioned them only showed us that Lucas' ideas themselves were *only so good.* Everybody, both pro- or anti-TPM, seems to agree that the story was somewhat flat, the plot had bigger holes in it than the Exxon Valdez, and the performances of its really top-notch actors were ultimately stilted and awkward. The awesome effects work only more clearly defined the flaws inherent in the script. (For my money, anyway. Feel free to keep a different opinion, if you wish.) And if the counter-argument to this is something along the lines of, "Well, he didn't have as much time to put in more work on the script, because the filming process itself was so difficult, due to the breakthrough work they were doing," then this would only prove that Lucas DID actually let the quality of the story suffer while the technological aspects were given more attention. And besides that, there's no way in hell he "didn't have enough time to work on the script." He had 15 years! A guy in a coma could probably hash out a script in that time. Next thing: >>"You fuckers bitch an moan about TPM not being dark. Well why dont you angry people open your eyes an watch it again. It is one of the most despair filled movies ever made. It has such a dark under[t]one to it, that it is almost subversive at some points. If you cant see that, you are still closed minded."<< I can't say I've heard this complaint, but you evidently have, and it really is pretty easy to imagine today's "counter-culture"-obsessed society complaining about this. My thing is, though, that if TPM really has such a dark subtextual undertone to it, then it really eluded me. And I don't really consider myself very closed-minded. :-) So my question is, what is it? Where is it? Are you talking about the whole "Anakin's dark future" thing? That this sweet-looking moppet could become a lethal, galactically-feared figure of evil? That's the only particular undertone I can surmise. Other than that, it's a kid's movie with superlative digital effects, IMHO. And my final point, regarding the postponement of Fox's broadcast of TPM; I agree. It's pretty lame, and rather pointless, given that everybody who wants to see it can watch it anytime they want to on video, and the ones who didn't buy it most likely won't watch it. (Just wanted to be the 100th person on this TB to bring this up.) That's it for me. Lightstormer OUT.
