Re: The Recent Rumored Title Change for FROM HELL

Published at:  Mar 28, 2001 8:04:25 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Just the other day on Dark Horizons I saw a note that claimed that FROM HELL was changing its name to JACK (yes, as in Coppola's ill-begotten nightmarish hellhole of a film). Well I contacted someone at the very top of the production who told me that this rumor was completely BS... Apparently the title, FROM HELL was ok-ed by the MPAA over a year ago. So never fear... FROM HELL is a title of a film coming to theaters this year.... thank god....

I didn't know the MPAA could approve titles two years in advance. Now if they would just back off on silly shit like censoring movie posters, etc.

Actually, this is a BAD thing...

    by prankster

Since "From Hell" the movie has been fundamentally altered from the classic graphic novel, I was in favour of a name change. If the new title was planned to be "Jack", then so be it; it would be a crappy Ripper movie with no link to taint the original. I'm quite disturbed that they are in fact going to release this compromised pile of puke with the title "From Hell", thus forever tarnishing the reputation of a great book.

I just want to take this opportunity to say once again how much Amy Robinson rocks. I mean, she was in MEAN STREETS, now she's producing FROM HELL, and she's helping NEVER AGAIN with distribution! Damn! That's cool.

    I have been wondering...

    by sith witch

about this title since the MPAA will no longer allow "hell" as part of a title. So why the laxness here? I know it is best that way since that is the title of the graphic novel it comes from, but I am shocked the MPAA chose to see it that way...

    MPAA bullshit politics...

    by uncapie

I would go see a movie about Jack the Ripper called "From Hell" any day rather than "Jack". Jack-what? Jack In the Box, Jack Mehoff? This is proof that the MPAA really has to get their act together! What about all-American, John Wayne in "Hellfighters", based on Red Adair, Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" series, "Hell Is For Heroes" with real men Steve McQueen and James Coburn, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in "Heldorado", "Hellcats Of the Navy" with the ex-Comander-In-Chief", Ronald Reagan, ""Hell Below Zero" and "Hell On Frisco Bay" with Alan Ladd, Cy Endfield's classic all-star cast film(Every actor is this flick went on to be successful!) "Helldrivers", "Hell's Angels" with Jean Harlow, Olson and Johnson in "Hellzapoppin", Joseph Cotton in "Hellbenders" direcetd by Italian Western maestro Sergio Corbucci, "Hell In the Pacific" with the ultra cool actors Lee Marvin and Toroshio Mifune, those are just a few of the films I know and I'm sure that the list is long! The MPAA has some serious issues to deal with in their innercore because if a preacher can use the word hell in his sermon and the MPAA Nazi's won't allow it in a title, there's a major problem here!

    by buzz maverik

...which everybody in the board meeting felt was more peppy and lighthearted. They all agreed that the whole "From Hell" thing was overdone with "The Boss From Hell" "The Girlfriend From Hell" "The Pizza Guy From Hell". The suits are trying to be original, folks, and it's the damned creative types that keep giving us these cliches.

Also, It's Not The Word "Hell" That The MPAA Won't Allow In Titl

    by buzz maverik

It's the word "fuckin'". Which is why you won't be seeing Chevy Chase in NATIONAL LAMPOON'S FUCKIN' WORKING VACATION or Mel Gibson in LETHAL FUCKIN' WEAPON. Even Ron Howard is not immune and was not allowed to go with his original title FUCKIN' DR. SUESS' HOW THE FUCKIN' GRINCH FUCKIN' STOLE FUCKIN' CHRISTMAS. They just called it THE GRINCH and it wrecked the whole thing.

    "From Hell" Rocked!!

    by kolobos rexx

I was at the Vegas Screening. This movie was superb. Far better than "Hannibal", scarier than anything to come out in several years. I'd even go so far as to say Oscar-worthy, in my opinion at least. I am totally honored that I got to see this film before the studio ruined it with silly edits. God only knows what they'll do with it now. I'd send in a review, but I signed a non-disclosure form. All I can say is, it was Excellent...

Maybe you should have taken a few seconds to whip out a dictionary, sound out the hard words, and try your best to read the article before posting. It clearly says, "Apparently the title, FROM HELL was ok-ed by the MPAA over a year ago." This means that the MPAA didn't have a problem with it (if what Harry was told is true.) See, now between the two of us, that's two useless posts in the talk-back just because you're an idiot (and you have issues with your innercore.)

    by red looney

The Hugues Brothers better not mess this film up otherwise its back to the hood for them. The graphic Novel is amazing, and it's too bad Nigel Hawthorne isn't playing William Gull, but Ian Holm is a top actor and should pull the part off no problem.

    St. Buggering....

    by silencer

Short answer... No. From Hell is impossible to film, Especially by people whose research into the Ripper killings falls short of even reading the From Hell appendix.

What we'll get is the usual Hollywood slasher garbage shorn of the complex exploration of the motives and beliefs of Gull, the historical accuracy, and presumably, the only thing that could save the movie, the extremely explicit sex.

I agree with Prankster, this movie doesnt DESERVE to be called From Hell.

this film being good, and reverential to the simply stunning source material just give up now. 'From Hell' is the finest graphic novel and possibly one of the finest ever stories ever told which condemns hypocracy so cleverly yet soulfully that there isnt a studio in Hollywood that would care about making this as equally an effective movie. PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME. That way people will find the book and not have their preconceptions tainted by what is more than likely going to be a suckfest.

    F JACKIE

    by willardeisenbaum

I like the title From Hell, and I'm relieved to read that the name won't change to JACK. Even without the graphic novel, and even if they change evrything from the graphic novel, there should be no problem using From Hell as the movie title, because that phrase comes from the Ripper's note to the cops -- Alan Moore didn't think of it. *** And another thing -- notice how everybody thinks of it as "Alan Moore's From Hell", even though comics is a visual medium? That's because the art is a fucking MESS in From Hell! Eddie Campbell's scritchy-scratchy art is an acquired taste at best. Bacchus makes my head hurt, and the Birth Caul was fuckn impenetrable. That's why I never get tired of recommending Rick Geary's Treasury of Victorian Murder, for a MUCH more satisfying read about the Ripper. 'Nuff sed!

    Alan Moore's...

    by silencer

It's usually referenced as Alan Moore's work because he was the one who did the majority of the research into the Ripper killings, and the subsequent theories, stories, fictions, and debunkings that they havce spawned. The story is all his. That's why, even though Eddie Campbell did a lot of research about the appearance and state of London at the time (and I'll bet most of THAT won't make the film), the major credit is Moore.

And Campbell's style couldn't be more suited to the era, the story or the setting, the scratchy style having a similar appearance to a contemporary engraving.

The origin of the phrase "From Hell"

    by ms.pointy

Since I never ran across the graphic novel, I was under the impression that the title came from the "return address" at the top of the letter that Jack the Ripper sent to a reporter near the end of the series of murders. Having seen an hour special on the subject recently, a few weeks after seeing a news blurb on the movie, I figured that was where they got the title.

    Name change

    by seanparker

If the name WAS chaned to Jack it was not because of the MPAA. It's because of marketing. Most people won't know what in the hell "From Hell" has to do with Jack the ripper. Since the majority of the people will probably think "From Hell" is some film about demons the film company figured it would be a better idea to call it "Jack" since people can associate Jack with Jack the ripper.
