New PEARL HARBOR Commercial!
Greetings, multimedia mavens! HREF=mailto:robogeek@robogeek.com>ROBOGEEK here with a funky-fresh peek at one of this summer's most highly anticipated (and hyped) films.
Earlier this evening, during the E! pre-Oscar Red Carpet coverage (and again during P.I.; btw, what kinda crack are you smoking, Bill?), the brand-spankin' new one-minute spot for PEARL HARBOR aired - but not, strangely enough, during the Oscars themselves. (In fact, I don't think I saw a single movie commercial during the Oscars, which was just plain weird.)
Anyway, thanks to my trusty TiVo and PowerBook, I managed to do a quick-and-dirty digitization of the spot so you folks could check it out for yourselves. It features a considerable amount of new footage (and what sounds like narration by Martin Sheen), and can now be yours in the form of a 5.7 MB 320x240 QuickTime file...

NEW "PEARL HARBOR" COMMERCIAL!
Enjoy,
- Robogeek
P.S.: BTW, didn't Susanna Hoffs look fabulous on the Oscars tonight?
P.P.S.: An astute Talk Backer claims this spot in fact debuted a week ago during the NCAA Play-Offs (whoops), and that a mediocre-quality version of it was online briefly at pearlharborfilm.net and comingsoon.net. However, upon further Robo-investigation, I've found it's mysteriously no longer available at either location (the links are dead). So for the time being, at least, this may be the only place online to snag this spot.
P.P.P.S.: Oh, and to Stilt-Man... that ATLANTIS spot can be found at aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=8321.

Kudos to the new Jerry Seinfeld Amex commercial, very well done like the other ones he does. Also That was a tad bit too much Britney, Pepsi totally overdid that one.
-
It debuted on CBS last Sunday (3/18) durring March Madness. A good version is here... http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/p/pearlharbor.shtml... Although it was first posted at the very well done www.pearlharborfilm.com.

There is no way in hell you can make a PG-13 war movie!! Thank god you'll get all the revenue from the little brats who can get in because of the rating, fuck Disney and Michael Bay for going to such lengths. Spielberg made a War movie for the veterans, hard and bloody and how it was. Bay is making a War movie for teenagers to take their girlfriends too and make a lot of money. This is a slap in the face to every veteran out there who has to witness yet another sugar coated hollywood piece of shit.

I'll go see it still, has some nice plane crashes, that for some reason intrigues me. Bay is a fucking loser though, from what I hear the thinks hes baby Jesus or something, even after making that hobo turd of a movie Armageddon. Fuck the Academy.

OK....am I alone in thinking this movie is going to be horrible? When I see Cuba in the TV spot I see him doing his oscar acceptance shtick with explosions. Not to mention the PG-13 rating. I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure that the bombing of the pearl harbor was pure "R" fare. I see a cash cow riding on the coat tails of "Saving Private Ryan" and "U-571". Oh yeah.......Gladiator is this year's "Titanic." Average story and acting + great special effects + era-epic piece = Oscar. At least CTHD got the cinematography award it deserved. As did Sodenburgh's director nod.
Back to the shadows for...
THESHADYOMEGA!!!!!

Saving Private Ryan made decisions in the first 20 minutes of the film that caused it to be R-rated. Take out the D-Day sequence and you have possibly a PG-13 film. If Pearl Harbour is even half as intense of the non-D-Day portion of SVP, then it'll still be a pretty good cinematic depiction of any war. Let's not forget that in the grand history of War films, most of them by today's standards would not be R. Furthermore, Titanic was PG-13, and that didn't spare any intensity in the third act. Don't make go into a list of PG-13 films that are plenty intense and war films that aren't R rated that are still pretty good...
-
Check out the amendments to the article. ;-)
-
Intensity? Uh no, He's friggin Mtv director with a fetish for things that go 'boom'. Expect PH to have plenty o' explosions and shots of the American flag waving in the wind, and of course flat characters that you don't give a shit about. It'll be the most successful film this year and win Academy Award for Best Picture next year for sure.

I'm curious about how your tivo and powerbook are connected. As far as I know, the tivo doesn't have a digital output... just composite and s-video. And the powerbook has firewire (DV) and usb, but no direct video inputs. Are you using a composite-to-DV converter, or a USB capture device, or something else entirely?

BAN & BOYCOTT "Pearl Harbor": The lie perpetrated upon the U.S.
by ban pearl harbor
...continues?! I hope not! As a History teacher, I get angry when history textbooks have inaccurate or totally false statements about historical events. We deserve the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It will be very disturbing to see this movie if it tries to rewrite history with the false claim that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack when our government knew about it way in advance and we had radar data showing the Japanese planes approaching Pearl Harbor. Read "Pearl Harbor Attack No Surprise", "December 7, 1941 . . . a Day of Deceit" and "The Myths of Pearl Harbor" at the following links for more info:

[ http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/myths/ ]
This event in history is similar to how the U.S. government lied to their citizens in order to enter the Vietnam War. Read "30-Year Anniversary: Tonkin Gulf Lie Launched Vietnam War" at the following link for more info:
May 25, 2001 will be a day that will live in infamy if we continue to lie to the public and the world about Pearl Harbor and other historical events. It would be a great disservice to the memories of all the men, women and children who died around the world during WWII. We should make every effort to ban and boycott this film if it continues to perpetrate the lie. -
Usually I wouldn't give away my secrets, but since you asked so nicely... For quick and easy vid-caps, I use the tiny Global Village VideoFX USB capture device to pull composite video from the TiVo's second set of outputs. The VideoFX is out of production, but you can still snag one for $35 at macsales.com - cheaper than the four cables it comes with! The device handles video only (and has both S-Video and composite inputs), so sound is routed directly into the PowerBook's Sound-In jack from the TiVo. FYI, the software bundled with the VideoFX is absolute crap (you can't even save preferences, which means manually resetting them for each and every capture - mind-numbing!), so I use QuickTime Pro for everything post-capture (i.e. Sorenson Pro compression and watermarking, and QDesign sound compression). If you have any other questions, just e-mail me.

me, my bro, and two of his friends, were extras for the japanese carrier scenes. I believe you can see my feet, yes MY FEET, beneath the green plane. You can see my brother pushing a torpedo.. and possibly his friend, as an officer standing above the deck... WOOHOO!
Note: each of our respective 'scenes' in this commercial only last about 1/5 of a second! ROFL!
Oh yeah, hey history teacher person.. PLUS the Flying Tigers were sent to China by FDR. The entire mercenary thing was a facade. This was revealed by the federal government a decade ago, and the Tigers themselves.
See http://flyingtigersvideo.com/
so US military forces were in battle with Japanese forces at least 2 years before Pearl Harbor. -

What you mean Bruckheimer gave this movie a PG-13 rating and sol
by rogue_leader
Folks Bruckheimer is an A-Hole who is much more concerned about grosses with this film than he is with showing the horrors of Pearl Harbor. Don't expect Saving Private Ryan here folks. You'll be lucky to get something as violent and meaningful as Hogan's Heroes out of friggin Bruckheimer and the way he makes his movies expect to see Col. Klink himself up there in the air dropping the bombs himself. :-) I am not saying the movie will be a turd. It will be the usual Bruckheimer melo-dramatic fair, but it will be better thanks to Randall Wallace's screenplay. The movie has alot of explosions and crap though so its no big stretch for Bruckheimer to say the least.
This will be for Bruckheimer/Bay what The Patriot was for Devlin/Emmerich a very patriotic (or jingoistic depending on your POV) that is better than their usual fair thanks to a high profile writer. For The Patriot it was SPR's Rodat for this film its Braveheart's Wallace.
Now onto the next point for the people above. Will you people PLEASE GIVE UP THIS CONSPIRACY CRAP! Look folks if FDR knew the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor he would've told them to prepare. It wouldn't have mattered if the Japs hadn't done the devastation they did with the troops there not knowing about the attack. The fact that the Japanese had attacked the U.S. would've been enough to get the U.S. into the war. Especially at that point in the war with U.S. sentiment moving away from isolationism. It makes no sense why FDR would purposely weaken his own Navy just to increase his chances of getting the U.S. into the war. All the credible historians agree. Don't believe this conspiracy BS! Yes its true reports had been made of Japanese ship movements but those never got any attention due to poor communication or officers ignoring reports.
Anyway as for the attack ummmm you folks BETTER BLIEVE THAT WAS A SURPRISE ATTACK! A sneak attack implies an attack without a formal declaration of war. Japan did not pass a formal declaration of war before attacking the U.S. forces. Therefore it was a sneak attack.
Oh yeah and as for that business the one dude brought up about the Flying Tigers. Dude that is BS! Those guys were volunteers and not formally part of the U.S. army. They were under the command of Generalisimo Chiang Kai Shek and followed his orders and were formally considered part of the Chinese Air Force. Yes its true FDR had a role in sending them there, but they were volunteers under Chinese authority. THEY WERE NOT U.S. forces. Many Americans also served in the European theatre in WW1 and WW2 before the U.S. formally entered those wars. Although those soldiers were Americans they cannot be counted as U.S. forces since they worked under European command. -
I'd rather see the Cats and Dogs spot again. I can't wait for this movie!
-
'Kunta Kinte you arent a slave, I pay you, and you can marry my 4 yr old daugter too'. Hhaahahaha, what a fucking joke Patriot was, but of course you can't have a movie during one of these 'I *HEART* USA' Holidays and remind people their ancestors were racists fuckers. Already in the PH trailer you see some Japanese solider with some grimace on his face, I bet we'll some shots of them killing babies and raping White American women, pure Hollywood. Fuck the Academy.
-
It would appear that I am not the only one here who thinks the PG-13 rating is a complete and utter disgrace. While I appreciate your views, it seems clear that many others here share my view on this. As for Saving Private Ryan being tame aside from the beginning, I fail to see how a soldier getting riddled with bulllets and bleeding profusely as his comrades try in vain to save him, or a room full of german soldiers getting machine gunned to death (by Ted Danson no less), a german sniper getting his eye shot out the back of his head, or the climactic battle to be PG-13 fare. I'm only asking for realism here. And that means you have to show violence when dealing with war. It was often gruesome and hard to look at and thats how it has to be portrayed if we're going to give our veterans any credit for the bravery they showed.
-
Do I like that? No; but thats the way it is. I don't think that Pearl Harbor will treat the Japanese any worse than Germans were treated in Saving Private Ryan. However, if Michael Bey wants to make the Japanes a bunch of thick eyeglassed, buck-toothed, " Me Rike Flyed Lice!" saying bunch of bastards that is his perogative. Its your perogative to either see the film or not. My question for those who are afraid of Japan-bashing in this movie is, How would you portray the Japanese? My personal opinion is that the majority of Japanese grunts didn't adhere to the same politics as their government; much like U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. They were doing what they were told to do. But how is Bey supposed to make the actions of a fascist, expansionist and violent government seem noble? Keep in mind that he is making this movie for the very same country that was attacked. I guess my point is that you probably wouldn't see a British director making a WWII movie about the Battle of Britain and have Nazi Germany cast in anything but a negative light. Nor would you see a Vietnemese director portraying the United States as a friendly- Hershey Bar giving out, Peace-Keeping Force.
-
...are like oil and water. The question is never "will they get it right?" it's always "will they supremely fuck it up?" I for one think the dramatic license taken by Randall Wallace's screenplay won't be too overt. Braveheart wasn't exactly a Scottish textbook but hey, it was a good film. Then again, what will Michael "feel the emotion" Bay do to the screenplay? On the Pearl Harbor as a lie deal... come on, don't be a revisionist. Did we know they were up to something? Yes. Were we prepared for... something? Yes. The commanders at Pearl Harbor even had all planes bunched together at the center of airfields so any local Japanese sabotuers could not get to them. But oops, this helped the Japanese bomber pilots looking at the airfields from above... So you're gonna tell me we knew what was coming? We did have radar reports but, as someone else mentioned, they were disregarded or lost in the communication chain. It was luck, not a strategic move, that all the carriers were out at sea. Oh, by the way, I believe I saw this commercial while watching my USC Trojans kicking everybody's ass. Fight On! Oh wait, Duke beat us... damn those Blue Devils! Damn them! And damn the ACC for screwing up the 3/4s Pac-10 Final Four. At least Arizona survived. We'll be back! All of us!
-
Kate Beckinshale is killed in the movie. You see Ben Affleck crying over his face in the commercial. It's not you're not supposed to know it's her, it's a close up for crying out loud. This is as big of a spoiler as when I read that Titanic sinks. What gives, Hollywood?
Sarcasm at the end -
contrary to popular belief, did not actually engage in combat until after December 7th, 1941, although they had been in the area training for several months beforehand. It is true that the "mercenary volunteers" business was just an act. As for the Pearl Harbor conspiracy theory, no one has ever come up with any real evidence, and all the theorizing I've seen, including Day of Deceit, makes incredible stretches of fact and credibility. For instance, the radar reports were dismissed by the officer who received them and never even made it to the Pearl Harbor CO, but FDR somehow knew about them? In any case, there's absolutely no doubt that whether FDR and a few others suspected the attack or not, it came as a total surprise to everyone in Pearl Harbor itself, which is where the action in this movie will be set. Also whether FDR suspected or not doesn't change the fact that as far as the Japanese knew it was still an unprovoked sneak attack against a nation they were at peace with, simply because they didn't like how the negotiations over economic sanctions were going.
-
The land of freedom and equality! How dare those Japanese bomb our military base! I think we'll have to nuke their women and children and then with a bit of movie magic the people will agree that it was the right thing to do.
Aren't Americans tired about this false history yet? Every American man isn't strong and brave, every American woman isn't blonde, blue eyed. America isn't perfect! No country is!
If a film is selling itself n being set during an historical period it is obligated to be not fairly accurate but to be 100% true to the event. If not, then why bother calling it an historical film. You might as well call it fiction. In my opinion there is no difference, or there shouldn't be, between historical drama or historical epic. Either case should be true.
And I'm sick to death of people saying movies are just entertainment and shouldn't be taken seriously. I know this, everyone one of Earth knows this, but that doesn't stop the fact that people believe what they see. Your everyday Joe isn't gonna read up on Pearl Harbour or the holocaust, most likely he'll see it in a movie and accept the facts presented to him (or her).
Hollywood needs to move the flag aside and understand that representation is important. Stereotypes can become a dangerous thing. I bet after Pealr Harbour is released, there'll be some 10 year old American kid who see's a smaller Chinese kid at school and decides to beat the crap out of him because his "people" bombed honest Americans in that movie he saw last week.
We need more movies like Platoon, where American can show how tall they are by admitting that they are just as bad as everyone else. -
"BigJackieV" has it correct. The notion that FDR etc knew about Pearl Harbor in advance and did nothing about it, basically sacrificing American lives in order to draw us in the war, is stupid, stupid, stupid. It's an old conspiracy theory, and makes no sense if you really look at history instead of cherry-picking random facts like the guys who wrote the much-discredited books you so ignorantly cite. This is black-helicopter, mutilated-cow, crop-circle stuff. The Pearl Harbor conspiracy joins this list of stupid theories for stupid people, which makes you a stupid person for believing it. I trust the majority of TalkBackers recognize this, and dismiss your idiotic conspiracy-mongering as the stupidity it really is. In a perfect world, this stupid, paranoid theory would fade away and trouble us no more, but of course, we all know there's no shortage of stupid people like you to keep it alive. Just do us all a favor and make sure to wear your anti-alien-mind-control tinfoil hat at all times, so we can identify you by sight and avoid you. Thanks tons! -- P.S. Oh, and did I mention that you're stupid?
-
and all you idiots will pay $8 to see it ($6 matinee). Everyone of you will see it.
-
...are just pissed because they know Pearl Harbor will be a good film. As far as people saying the Japs will be portrayed as evil, cutout characters for some reason forget to mention that Spielberg's germans were portrayed like this. And as far as the American flag-waving movies, they are made because they make money(see Enemy at the Gates which got beat out by Exit Wounds). People don't care if America is not involved. Also, it would be stupid for Bay/Bruckheimer to try and not to make this movie pg-13 since they don't see a dime until the movie sees a profit. How can anyone blame them, they're putting their asses on the line for this film. I think the R-rating hinged on a few scenes in a hospital where Bay used blurry shots on soldiers who were injured. Personally, I don't need to see blood spilling out all over the place to get the picture. BTW, Memorial Day has been a terrible weekend for blockbuster movies over the past few years(See Godzilla and MI-2). I think Bruckheimer and Bay will give us another solid action flick as they did with The Rock. (Armageddon and Bad Boys were pretty good also).

I'm proud of the work I did under Commander Elvis Presley, Lieutenant Big Bopper and Generalissimo Bigfoot. Suppressing the truth about Pearl Harbor, the Apollo Moon Landing, the JFK Assassination, George Brett's pine-tarred bat, power steering, and the unabridged manuscript of Norman Mailer's ANCIENT EVENINGS (which does miraculously heal psoriasis *if* the reader can finish it without putting out their own eyes,) was perhaps the greatest honor of my life, save for the time I waited on the Oak Ridge Boys at the Maryville, Tennessee Cracker Barrel. You have no idea how hard seemingly delusional folk like Mr. Ban Pearl Harbor make our job. Luckily, we have people like Michael Bay, a highly-decorated member of the United Nations Black Helicopter Corps from 1986-89, to keep the wool safely pulled over the public's eyes.

As for this continuing debate on the demonizing of the Japanese in PH, it'll definately happen, just like America has demonized Communists since forever, who cares though, let the morons continue to believe what 'movies' tell them. I already have a prediction that we'll see a scene where some white soldiers beat on a Japanese dude, and Ben Affleck steps in between points out that his blood is red too, after Affleck helps him up and then turns his back on him and then the crazy Japanese dude eyes glow red and does some karate on Affleck, who then stabs him with a chopstick, cue slo-mo closeup and then he mutters, 'Stick around'.
-
I just d/l the PH ad and when they show 'Ben Affleck' with his name under him and he's crying that sure looks like a dead (SPOILER) Josh Hartnett he's crying over. I hope I'm wrong, because that FUCKING SPOILS IT
-
I have to admit that I'm a tad worried about this one. I consider myself a good enough sport, as well as well-read enough, to separate out which movies are intended as history lessons (Schindlers' List, Gandhi, etc.) and which ones are more entertainment using history as a backdrop (Braveheart, Last of the Mohicans). Unless the offenses are pretty egregious (like say, uh, Panther or Hoffa), I'll cut a movie a lot of slack.
But Pearl Harbor is pretty difficult to make 'entertaining' in my opinion. It signalled the start of one of the longest and bloodiest engagements known (The Pacific War) which ended with the horrific use of atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, after countless lives from many nations - U.S., Japan, Britain, China, Korea - had already been lost. It's tied into issues of politics, economics and race that cannot be avoided (if you think about it), the legacy of which still lives with us today. It also prompted one of the worst cases of U.S. abuses of human rights, when 120,000 Japanese-Americans were forced to abandoned their homes and were herded into camps.
It's a difficult story to tell, and Hollywood's general track record is to either go with glorified heroics, special effects, or perhaps simplified moralizing, or both. And Bruckheimer and Bay, known mostly for slick entertainments like "The Rock" don't strike me as the best storytellers to give this tale the weight or attention it deserves, dare I say, NEEDS.
On the other hand, I'll give it a wait. After all, every now and then, surprises lurk around the corner. Who knows, maybe this will be the film that will turn my opinion around about those two guys. Maybe.
On a last note, PH will have special significance for me. My father, a third-generation Japanese immigrant, was born in Hawaii on December 11, four days after the bombing. The power was out due to an air raid scare. When I think of that, I remember, this isn't a story to be taken lightly.
P.S. I've seen a couple of ignoramuses on this site using the word "Jap" or saying other ridiculous, outdated invectives. To this I say, get a life, get your head screwed on straight, and go to hell. -
300,000 americans did die in the war. And as lame as such statements as "America saved democracy" or "The USA fought for liberty" etc may sound. The end result was still the destruction of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The Japanese alone were responsible for the death of 21 million innocent Chinese civilians, this amongst other crimes are today still denied by the Japanese government. And the thing is, the Japanese crimes against humanity were widely publicized in Japan's media during the war, as the holocoust was well known in Germany. I remeber all the articles about human killing contests in Nanjing and what not. So contrary to the historical revisionist's claims that the German and Japanese people did not hold the same beliefs and racial precepts as their government, those people (or a vast majority there of) not only knew what was going on but activly or passively supported those efforts to exterminate the Jews, Slavs, Russians and Chinese. Are they to be blamed, yes! As an American student of International affairs, do I sorry for Nagasaki and Hiroshima? I cannot honestly say that I do. Would I blame the United States for its actions in WWII? I only blame its isolationist and cowardly behaivior up until Pearl Harbor, But I shall neverthless praise its actions, as well as those of the Russians, the British and Chinese against Nazi Germany and Japan.
-
Number 1--Saving Private Ryan was rated R because of the opening scene and bad language.
Number 2- I do wish this film was rated R, however, that doesn't mean it won't be intense. It just means that it won't show to much gore. They can actually show quite a bit of violence, including decapitations, as long as it isn't to bloody. Also, U571 seems to be well liked and it was only PG13.
Number 2--it's to bad they gave away the dead of one of the leads. I noticed that as well but it really didn't bother me as much since I've read the script. -

and what of the American genocide of the Native americans, the killing of the two million Vietnamese, bombing of Dresden, Tokyo and Breman, or Stalin's gulags and Mao's cultural revolution, or Madaline Albright's famous "those Iraqi children could be sacraficed for the national interest of the United States" statements in support of the embargo. The idea that "no one is innocent" is certainly true. But this does not change the fact that in the specific case of WWIII, the Allied power, for whatever motivation, self interest or otherwise, did humanity a great service in ending the war, and that Japan and Germany were the responsible parties in starting WWII (though it has been argued that French, American and British cowardice and indiffrence gave Hitler the confidence he needed to start the war). Agressors in this case were aggressors, and genocide in this case was genocide.
-
Never responded to any of these before, this should be different. First off, yes the Japanese did suffer tremendously in WWII. Hell, every nation that fought in the damn thing suffered irreplaceable losses, but in our PC times we seem to think it is our responsibility to portray the American people as bad people and should be sorry for winning such campaigns as WWII. This is complete bullshit! Even though I agree that history is written by the winners, I don't believe we should feel wrong in respect to the way WWII ended. Sorry, yes, but not wrong. I had the pleasure of attending a conference at school a few years back on the very subject of dropping the bomb. The room was filled with middle aged people and die hard WWII vets, some of them whose next stop was Japan before the war ended. The debating was intense and moving. Both sides gave their views, while I sat back in complete silence, watching some of the veterans crying at the disrespect to our country. This was a generation that did what they felt was right in a time of great confusion. A time that people of this generation (and I'm only 28) will never understand. So to those of you that seem to feel the need to trash America, I dare you to look into the eyes of those WWII vets and say some of the things you have said on this sight. I know I have strayed from the subject, which was the Pearl Harbor commercial, (hell I don't think I even came close to it) but before you start to put this country down, try to look at what was done in that era from the point of view of our ancestors. I hope this film is good and stays true to what was going on then and pays respect to them men and women who were doing what they felt was right.

It really doesn't matter. Revisionists will point out that the majority of the US really WASN'T interested at all in getting involved in "the other guy's war," which is true. The government knew better. SO let's play "what if" with some popular notions of the day. The average American thought that U.S. soil was 100% invasion proof back around 1940, that we flexed our muscle in WW1 and were too far away from Europe and Asia to be a real target. The government knew better. The general populace, in an age of newspapers and radio, weren't well informed enough to realize that Nazi and Imperialist rule in Europe and Asia would directly affect not only US Allies, but the US itself. Most of the people picking up a newspaper back then saw headlines about France or Russia getting invaded and whatnot and said, "Well, damn, that's a shame. Someone should do something," but didn't have much interest in signing up for the Army and going to help. If Japan had not attacked the US, no WW2, it would just be the Euro-Asian conflict, and swastikas would be all over Europe, top to bottom. The government realized this, and knew that it would be catastrophic for both foreign relations AND eventually, Axis eyes would turn towards us and decide that maybe America was a bit too powerful to remain a neutral counterpart. Then World War 2 REALLY would have started, (and by that time, both sides would likely have had atomic weapons) And the US knew that too. NOW...this supports strongly a theory that FDR, as a politician and Commander-in-Chief, along with his advisors, was willing to sacrifice one bease for the sake of having an entire COUNTRY rise in support, throw US economy into highest gear, and go whip some Axis ass. It is a very believable theory. As honorable and great as FDR seemed, a politician is always a politician. Basically, the 1930s-40s may have been the last period of time when one could honestly say that the US government 100% was more on top of things than its populace. So it's not a stupid notion at all. But is it true? Well, I for one do NOT think that is what happened. But don't rip on conspiracy theorists too badly. Usually the reason people like that get paranoid is because we really DON'T know everything about a situation that we thought was cut and dried. Oh well. "Pearl Harbor" will be "Armageddon" meets "1941" and will at least be nominated for Best Picture. It's going to be feel-good crud, and I'll probably go to a matinee if nothing else is out.

If you can find it (libraries are your friend!) check out F. Paul Wilson's BLACK WIND. It takes place in Japan and the US from about 1924 to the end of the Pacific war. It addresses many of the 'conspiracy theory' aspects of the story as well as being spooky as fuck. Highly recommended.
Of course, I think the movie is going to be loud and full of the endless ways that those sneaky bucktoothed Jappos hurt the States while we had no idea a war was even going on, and will end with FDR throwing off his crutches and pledging to fight for all that is good and righteous. He will then set up American concentration camps.

They are all great but here is the newest one...it's the german one. Awesome trailer.

...but God dammit, we can't forgive em for ruining a good ol' fashioned little league game.
For a great, unbiased, pretty historically accurate film concerning the bombing, check out Tora! Tora! Tora!.
For what looks like a film with some great special effects (what I'm probably going to see it for), odd patriotic tones, and a Ben Affleck romance, see Pearl Harbor.
And by the way, some might find the term 'Japs' offensive. -

Affleck's only crying because he had to take a salary cut to do
by regis travolta
He's such a wussy boy when it comes to money. Oh boo-hoo-hoo! My buddy/my brother/my girl who was gonna marry me/my shipmates/my copilot died in this dastardly sneak attack oh woe is me!

All you people who are bashing this film from a few trailers are probably the same people who were praising Battlefield Earth as "The Star Wars of the next millenium". The least you can do is wait for the film to be screened before you start tearing it apart.
-
I knew that movie would blow for 2 reasons, first off it was backed by those Scientologist dumbasses. Second, remember those pictures where Travolta was wearing the ultimate platform shoes? Hhahaahahhaha. Anyone who thought that movie would be anything more than a hubo turd after those photos needs to have their brain examined and then stepped on.

i looked at the Flying Tigers URL i posted, and i think Darth Hideous is correct. The Tigers did not engage in combat with the Japanese forces until after Pearl Harbor, but it seems to me that this had nothing to do with US policy (ie "Don't attack until we've been attacked")
instead, the Tigers just didn't get the opportunity to do fight at those moments. But preparations for the fighting had started July '41 or before.
for all the historical problems, and possible political agendas of Bay/Bruckheimer, i think this movie will be great fun to watch. Sure, sure, some people have a prob watching movies about war for fun.. but -
Someone sarcastically (I think) typed in their talkback "How dare those Japanese bomb our base!" and went on to ridicule (and he certainly has a basis for it) historical films. I'd just like to point at that on Dec. 8, 1941, "How dare those Japanese bomb our base!" was indeed the sentiment of the country. Of course, Bay's film probably won't deal with the US's racism toward Japanese (among others) and will probably simplify it to "How dare those Japanese bomb our base!" and portray the country as the good ol' farmboys, but hey... it'll be half-right. If the film portrays Japanese as caricatures... well, it is a film from the US POV. If one particular Japanese soldier/pilot gets more than 2 minutes of screentime, I'll be impressed. If then he is featured as evil, well THAT is when I'll have issues with the film. But I'm guessing they'll be pretty much faceless villains, which really doesn't bother me that much. If some 8 year-old wants to beat up his Chinese-American classmate after viewing this film, then all I have to say is: BLAME CANADA! Really, though, I think historical fiction is okay. Yes, it's disconcerting that people will buy Pearl Harbor as textbook fact, but these same people will try to sneak into Tomb Raider immediately afterwards. As long as they don't get voted president... (insert Dubya joke here. I'm tired.)
By the way, am I the only person that thought U-571 sucked ass? Not because it was historically inaccurate but because I can re-enact the movie right now: "Dive! Dive! Depth charges! Shit! Dive! (silence) Explosions! Germans! Dive!" Such potential and such piss-poor execution. And I liked Mostow's Breakdown. -
I will see this movie. I want this said right out in front. I would also like it to be known that I live in the US. This movie if not intentionaly biased, will be inacurate. It is not ment to be factual, nor anywhere does it call itself a documentary. It is in fact a story, that is being told to its audiance, which like every other movie to come out of hollywood is an american audiance. International sales are all well and good, and should be taken into account, but the fact remains, if the movie is from the US and is made for the US. As it is made for the US, why would it go out of the way to degrade its audiance. That would make no sense. I do not think that the Japanese will be unfairly portrayed. In fact, the only ant-Japanese sentiments I suspect will be those felt by the charichtors in the movie. Those feelings would be justified from their knowledge base in 1941. To those who complain about American flag waving, I return to the title of my talk back. If you think the movie stinks, just dont see it. Send the message that this is not what you want to see on screen. In my oppinion, a little flag waving is good now and again, and every country shuld do it. My advice to those countrys is, that if they want to see a viewpoint other than american, they should make their own movies. Hollywood has been, and will always be geared to America. Every now and again, they may come out with a movie everybody likes, but that is a rarity. To sumerize, don't knock it because its patriotic. If the movie stinks just dont see it, And I will see you at the movies.

Bey's making this movie for all the boys of Easy C Company! Yeah that's right all of em. Johnny and Ox, Brooklyn Joe and Gimpy Pete. SodaPop and Little Bob. Yeah even for Chauncy too. Yeah that's right Chauncy! Bey's doin it for all of em in hopes that he can get back at those dirty Japs for one of the most brilliantly planned sneak attacks of all time. Christ every time King Kong Bundy "Pearl Harbors" Magnum T.A. you have the Japanese to thank.
From what I heard about this movie Bey is going to give Japanese soldiers a heart and a soul. One of the Japanese commanders is reported to say something to the extent of " By doing this we have just doomed our children to death" so to me it looks like there might be a little characterization in those sneaky bastards after all. People are idiots to think that any government or society is devoid of atrocity. My opinon is that some are worse than others. Yes Japanese Americans had to go through the inconvienence and humiliation of being placed in internment camps, but somehow I think they were better off than German Jews and Chinese peasants. Im American and Im not afraid to admit that my country has commited atrocites, but it disturbs me that other nationalities cannot. What even disturbs me more is the fact that a lot of people on this board seem to gloss over the fact that Japan, in an unprovoked act, destroyed a large portion of property that wasn't theirs. MAN THAT'S JUST MEAN!!! The United States has an extensive history of being bastards but somehow I think that there are far worse out there. BTW, I hope the American assholes who are condemning the dropping of A-Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki realize that if those bombs weren't dropped that over one million of their parents and grand-parents would have died assaulting the islands of Japan. Forcefully occupying Japan would have been like Vietnam on crack; with whole kindergarten classes of Tokyo's finest charging American G.I's, bomb laden, ready to meet their divine wind. Even a good deal of Japanese citizens now realize that the dropping of those bombs saved millions of American and Japanese lives. -
Wow, that looked like a television miniseries spot. Honestly, go back and watch it, and think about that airing before ER. "A Hallmark Event".

... is not from "the Crow" at least, not in this ad. Anyone know what it is?

Jesus H Christ on a crutch. All this bitching about the fact it is a Michael Bay film is making me want to fucking throw-up. I've never heard such lame, narrow-minded bullshit in all my life. "Waa! Waa! Waa! My pussy hurts!" is all I am hearing. Don't like Michael Bay for what ever black-clad, art-house, wanna-be reasons you have? Fine with me. Get the fuck off the forums that are about his movies. And since when does the quality of a fucking movie depend on its god damn rating? A war movie that is PG-13? Oh no! Run for the fucking hills! Give me a fucking break. "Tora Tora Tora", "Midway", "12 O'Clock High", "Sand Of Iwo Jima", "The Thin Red Line". Ever heard of ANY of those movies you sick twisted violence cumming assmunchers? All of those had hardly any blood spraying in the cameras, or shots of guys walking around armless and yet they are all great movies. Though I liked SPR, its major claim to fame was its first 30 minutes. After that it degraded into a ho-hum script with some standard cliches. So go rent Faces of Death again you sick fucks and get your jollys off those. You don't have to have a shot of a open head wound and eight-ball hemmorhage to have a good movie. Complaining about there going to be a bunch of flag waving in PH? Didn't see any of you bitches complaining about it in SPR. Calling The Patriot, and PH flag waving I Love The USA movies? What the fuck do you think SPR was? I won't even start on the history of the whole thing either. I, unlike have you judgemental fucking losers, will have to wait until I see the movie to judge it, but all you conspiracy hosers....there isn't any. Read "At Dawn We Slept" for one. I'll only make a few quick points. 1- They knew the Japanese were going to deliver a declaration OF SOME KIND. Not of war. 2- The declaration was suppose to have been delivered very shortly before the strike but was held up in decoding at the consulate (though it can still be rightly considered a "sneak attack") 3- Radar data is hardly evidence of conspiracy....they did note a large formation of planes....but the radar ops figured it was the flight of B17s coming in from the mainland (plus a flight of TBFs was due in as well). 4- Like one talkbacker mentioned...there were Americans already fighting but not as US forces (as Afflecks character is suppose to be). If I hear one more complaint about using the Lexington and other US ships for Japanese carriers I'm gonna fucking scream. What did you want him to do? Build a full size Akagi-class or Shokuku-class carrier so he could fly planes of it? Gimme a fucking break. THAT would just be something else for you stupid bitches to complain about. Oh...and hate Hollywood movies? SPR=Hollywood for your fucking info. LOTR=Hollywood. Matrix2=Hollywood. Schindlers List=Hollywood. Platoon=Hollywood. Hollywood makes its fair share of good movies. I doubt you go to this site because you watch "Dancer in the Dark", "Insomnia", and "Le Jatee" exclusively. So give me a fucking break.-----Kuang MK 11 out

All you fucking idiots who are nitpicking every fucking thing about this movie is enough to make me sick too. I don't remember this happening with SPR or The Patriot, it's obviously some sort of personnal vendetta against the filmmakers. Maybe it's because you're a loser and he gets to fuck all kinds of gorgeous women. who knows. All you who are saying this movie will not do justice to the vets or its going to be too Hollywood, what fucking movie isn't. At least Pearl Harbor has the sense to put an opening statement in the fucking movie that says the movie is not a documentary, the characters are not all real, etc just to satisfy you fucking idiots who go to this movie thinking you're getting a history lesson. This movie is about entertainment and if you don't want to see it, don't see it. And if it turns out to be a crappy Godzilla or MI-2 or other shitfests released over Memorial Day, then rip the movie apart.

Anyone who remotely thinks that this has any chance of becoming a good movie is a total idiot. Unfortunately, that means almost everyone. The movie's going to be a big hit despite the fact that most people will hate it. I, for one, am going to see it because I'd love hating it.

"Armageddon" is one of the most outrageously bad films EVER MADE! It's up there with "Showgirls" for out-and-out unintentional belly-laughs. Hell, Hal Needham's "Megaforce" is downright brilliant compared to anything Bay has scraped off his toilet bowl and committed to celluloid. Sheesh!
-
Bad Boys - funny, action film
The Rock - funny, very cool action film
Armageddon - decent
Even if you didn't like Armageddon, 2 of the 3 were good.
