Test Screening review of FROM HELL... fittingly enough from Las Vegas!
Hey folks, Harry here... well strange enough I kind of knew this test screening was coming... it was something I picked up from someone I talked to during SXSW that made me think something was going on with FROM HELL... I've heard that the print has been locked, but since they are testing it... well... the studio can always change locks... But it seems the Hughes Brothers have tooled a fine film so we should have no real worries about that. BTW... If you are Hughes Brothers fans, you must check out their AMERICAN PIMP as well as a new documentary that they produced called SCRATCH! The Gonzo Filmmaker does not deal in spoilers, but if you saw the film last night in Vegas, I'd love to hear your thoughts... so write in... let's hear all about it! Now... for a bit of fear and loathing from hell, here's the Gonzo Filmmaker...
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FOLLOWING THE DRAGON…?
Gonzo Filmmaker here… I just got back from the first test screening of From Hell here in Las Vegas and I was pleased with what I saw. No spoilers here.
I showed up early and alone. The screening came to me at a short notice and I wasn’t able to scrounge up any of my usual fiends and reprobates to join me. That and I’ve been entrenched in the production of my own short film, which has been waylaid by that two oscar nominated, pigfucking waterhead Steven Soderberg and his remake of that useless rat pack flick that swiped some of my actors out from under me.
At any rate… there I was sitting alone taking in the other attendees as they shuffled in. I noticed a few people I recognized… the passes were left at various comic shops in town. I guess they were trying to tip the scale in their favor… kind of like Ol’ Kev Smith test screening one of his flicks at a Comic Convention. "Mallrats tested really well"… no shit.
There were a group of prime seats taped off and soon their occupants arrived. A few easily recognized fatback producers, hangers on and the directors… the Hughes brothers. Or was it the Wayans brothers…? They sat down as people finished wandering in and I noticed someone I knew a row over and only seats away from the Hughes’. "I’ve been looking forward to seeing this… but I’m not sure about the directors," I said stretching over to his ear. "They might only be good at making BLACK movies." That was loud enough to garner many uncomfortable stares. The two directors, who were sitting two rows apart from each other, stared and I returned the stare with an acknowledging grin letting them know that I knew who they were and was tossing some good-natured fun their way. The movie started shortly thereafter and I said no more.
Johnny Depp need beware of typecasting as a "drug guy"… Fear and Loathing… Blow… and now From Hell. Depp plays an opium den inhabiting detective in Victorian England facing off against the nefarious Jack the Ripper. Heather Graham plays a whore.
Having not read the source material (Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s 1991 Comic Book Series), all the appropriate twists came as the proper surprises and I had no preconceived ideas about the film. Supposedly though, the graphic novel surrounded the exploits of Jack the Ripper rather than the detective investigating it but being unaware I was not bothered by it.
The movie, while not the final, polished cut had all the special effects, process shots and soundtrack and they worked to full dramatic effect. While slow in some places, it’s nothing that a little quick editing couldn’t fix. All in all, the movie did a great job pulling off the period and you never got the sense that it was filmed in Prague. Depp as always, in my opinion, delivers a brilliant performance and Heather Graham does a fine job as a filthy whore if not a little too clean and attractive in comparison to the other whores. Ian Holm was awesome as Sir William Gull and all the performances as a whole were great.
One thing that surprised me was the lack of gore considering the subject matter. Not that there wasn’t any… there was, well done and well placed and much of it was off camera. It’s a good thing… if there were more it would have made it a slasher flick and it’s not… but knowing Hollywood they’d probably want to gore it up for unnecessary shock value.
Well, I hope that answers some questions about it and gives you an idea of what the screening was like.

Hopefully the Hughes brothers arent only good at black movies, since their 'aclaimed' debut feature Menace II Society wasn't a very good movie, not even a good 'black' movie, since Boyz N the Hood was way better. From Hell looks good though, and I'm looking forward to it; could this be a good Jack the Ripper flick? My hope's up
-
oh yeah
-
Apparently "From Hell" is a somewhat slow-paced, well-acted film that focuses on a detective pursuing Jack the Ripper. And there's not too much gore. Isn't that more of a summary than a review? Ah well, I suppose this is the kinda film where you don't want to give away the twists, but a *little* more information might've been nice. The focus on Aberline over Jack himself at least confirms my fear that this will be very removed from the source material. I think it's gonna take some very enthusiastic reviews to coax me in. So far, I'm not getting the impression of anything even *close* to the nearly transcendental horror Moore created.
-
Damn... did I forget to mention that it was a really good movie? It was. In regard to the relationship between the comic and film, based on what I have heard about the comic... I'm guessing, and this is speculation, that the Hughes brothers wanted to make a Jack the Ripper movie, they liked the Freemason aspect of the comics, liked the characters but for fear of getting sued by Moore and Campbell they sent them a check and made their own movie while still using the comic's name and character names. This may be my favorite Jack the Ripper movie next to TIME AFTER TIME starring Malcom McDowell and David Warner.
-
Didn't mean to slam ya - was just hoping for a few more specifics. As to the film as it relates to the comic, rest assured that it IS a fully licensed adaptation. Moore and Campbell sold the rights, so the Hughes brothers could be as literal or liberal in adapting it as they wanted. No danger of lawsuits. Unfortunately (at least for me, as a fan of the comic), it sounds like they went for liberal. And, yeah, "Time After Time" is a great one. On that matter, all can agree.
-
...this guy is. Gonzo Filmaker (hardly the case by the sound of it)cheeses a paltry 1 minute of fame by addressing the Hughes Brothers with a racial slur!? What the fuck? Nice going, jackoff.. Amazing what passes for film reviews and commentaries in here often ends up as a paper-thin veneer for bigotry. That said, and please, spare us any additional reviews in the future Gonzo (this had to be one of the flattest reviews ever munged up...no insights, nothing new that hasn't been printed already for months, no real reason for actually being posted here), FROM HELL has actually been screened twice, once in the aforementioned Las Vegas, the second in L.A. I have contacts who attended the LA screening last week, and indicated that the film WAS still in post-production, with digital work to go, score still missing in places, and who provided actual thoughts on Depp, Graham and Holms performances, which all appeared to be fine. As for the gore factor, there's a fine line between implicit gore for helping an audience achieve the visual of what's happening, and crossing the line into violence fetishist and graphic voyeur. I think we're familiar with both the history and the plot here, and being disemboweled with a fluted surgeons' knife in a grimy backalley of Whitechapel in public view in the middle of the night as you slump to the ground in a pile of your own steaming intestines ( get the point?) plays better in the mind than a hacked visual version of it that the MPAA allows to fart by. Looking forward to this film, if only for the Hughes' visual style and tension factor... - Later.

Please reconsider posting any more reviews from this racist, self serving hack. If I wanted to read bile, I'd puke in a teacup.

Turn down yer cool knob or you'll just look like a knob

Having read the comics and the amazing trade paperback of Moore's scripting...I hope they managed to capture at least some of the amazing dialog and pacing of the original. Anyways, I have to agree with previous posters...You waste more type insulting Soderberg (albeit in a rassafratchin kinda way) and the directors (albeit in a frat boy's friendly beating kinda way)than giving us any specifics on this flick. Granted, I'm a pathetic geek drooling over the leavings of folks who actually produce work instead of doing anything myself (Keep up the good work, Harry ;-)and am prone to a l'il hyper-sensitivity when teased with the promise of Hellish scoopage...but damn...to assume the asshole boys club posturing routine either means you must be an amazing film maker or an interminable prat who thinks ordering the correct sparkling water is the key to funding...The point to this ramble: We don't care about paranoid self-serving fantasies involving established filmmakers stealing your talent...or your capacity to appear like a sardonic asshole in front of folks who just got done actually making a film...I know, I'm missing the whole, "But I was just kidding to look cool in front of the film guys! Puttin' 'em in their place, I was!" Vanity driven includes like that are just gonna make jerk-offs like me focus on all the wrong things you did, instead of the film itself...
-
yeah, just like the "talk backs" to talk trash about one another and get all potty-mouthed. everyone hiding behind their (free)internet, myself included. jack the internet ripper is after you. this short blurb by gonzo isn't really all that different from what i've read on this site by other featured contributors. you'd think this guy said "negro" in front of a black church. folks, relax.
here's food for thought:
is a person rascist because he thinks someone like, say, spike lee is a one-trick pony? prior to SOS he has only made black films, for better or worse, and it's a shame he hasn't attempted to direct other genres--like a speilberg. get off the damn bus and film a space ship for once. -
One trick pony? Because his movies generally feature mostly black casts they are all the same? You really are a retard. Have you seen the movies? Does that mean that Schindler's List was 'Jew Movie' and appeals only to Jewish people? What about Scorcese? Apparently he does 'Italian Movies.' I am not the biggest SPike Lee fan, I think he has really done some crap. I also think that SOS is a lot closer to Do The Right Thing than Girl 6 would be. Girl 6 being one of his supposed 'Black Movies.' Well, maybe I just don't get it. I am Irish after all so I really only understand Neil Jordan movies. That is when I am sober enough to watch them. As for the reveiwer, the Hughes Brothers, who I really could care less about, Menace was great but Dead Pres sucked, I wish they had beaten the living fuck out of you.
-
If AICN doesn't have real spies anymore it should at least have good reviews.
-
plain and simple. I know fanboys drool over anything Moore does, but the guy is as psycotic as Phillip K. Dick. Yeah Watchmen was ok, though he could have shortened it out by a few issues, and add to the fact that the best charcter from the book was intended as an insult to Steve Ditko. Guess it didn't turn out that way.
And yes, From Hell sucks. You wanna good read about Saucy Jack? The Ripper A to Z is a great yarn, and it's the truth. Not some far-out tale of Mary Kelly runing off with the ol' dick.
As far as the film, give them a chance. -

The Hughes Brothers have the most potential of the current crop
by batutta
In my opinion, none of their films have been that great, but from a technical standpooint they are the most polished of the group. Singleton still feels like an amateur--Spike is always doing some stupid shit with the camera. Their artistic sensibility is also the most flexible. Unlike most other black filmmakers, they don't seem to have a strict agenda to put across. They just seem to want to tell stories. Unfortunately the stories they have told aren't very good. The characters in both of their features go absolutely nowhere during the course of the story. A bunch of shit happens to them, but they emerge unchanged. Some may say that's the point, but it doesn't make for compelling drama, and the way the stories were structured needed for the characters undergo some kind of change, wether it's redemption or self-destruction. Hopefully FROM HELL will deliver a story on par with the technical promise shown in their first two features.

Gotta give itup to the Hughs. They got their " first" start at the best and cheapist Film School in the world-Los Angeles City College. Not only the Hugh bro's went their but also Mimi Leder, Tamera Davis, F.Gary Gray, Jordan Cronenwelth,Tarseen and MANy other people. L.A.C.C had an AVID editing system while my own $2.000 a quarter film school
was dicking us with an old Video Toaster. An you can't beat $13 a credit either or if yo play your cards right- a free waver. -
For me, "black" movies are those which are targeted toward a primarily African American audience. Now, I am aware that there is a lot of gray area there, but if you can not tell which movies are targeted for which demographic (by watching the previews--what types of aspects are focused upon in that 2 minute summary?), then you've got some kind of logic disorder. Let's be honest, 90% of the time, it is quite easy to determine which movies have a certain kind of audience in mind--for ALL people. Action flicks=men. Chick flicks=women. And so on. That's not to say that members from other demographics can not enjoy those movies, too, but these movies do have their "Core" audience for which they were specifically made.
-
Mark Kelly dosent run off with "the ol' dick." whatever that is.
why not read the book? My worry is that Depp is trying to play a character who is a lot older then him, but fair doos to him for choosing something challenging - from what i here it was his support that got the project off the ground.
Shorten Watchmen.... ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha etc.
-
Im looking forward to the film.
I recommend anyone interested in the mythology should check out anything by ian sinclair - especially about the Blokes stuff in rodsinksys room.
The whitechapel/Brick lane area is one of the better parts of London. Its still a poor area. Wealth and poverty still sit sideby side.
The east end has changed a lot in the past 100 years but its still all there if you know where to look and have an eye to appreciate it.
A lot of the old tenements are still standing wearing new shopfronts like party masks but the rotten teeth still through. (poetic no?)
The Spitlefields tavern, The Seven Stars and The Golden Heart are all wonderful pubs where a decent pint can still be had, along with a dry cheese sarnie if your feeling peckish. Always good for a bit of afterbird or a pub quiz with a few of the locals who range from combat trouser wearing designers and muscians to dodgy car dealers and their wives.
Later on you can always pop for a curry on Brick Lane - not quite as good as Bradford but plenty of choice. Further down there's the Vibe Bar for PlayStation playing hipsters. Up the road you can pop for a bagel and rub shoulders with coppers and cabbies on a break or mashed up clubbers on their way home.
Spitalfields Market which lies opposite the Ten Bells and Spitalfields church on commercial street, is now the most vibrant of Londons markets in a way that Camden Town, with its sad goths, indie wannabes and student punks hasnt been for over ten years.
Unfortunately Spitalfields is now under threat from the property developers and the god of profit. The captains of industry explain that they are hoping to 'improve' the area by destroying half the market for new office blocks and turning the rest into a twee copy of Covent Garden.
This is the real shame of spitalfields.
This is in a city where there is already a glut of unused office space and buildings such as Centrepoint can sit half empty while house prices shoot through the roof and beggars and tramps can still sit freezing around The Strand.
A pressure group was formed to combat the selling of local heritage but with the land owned by the City of London corporation and other vested interests involved its looking pretty slim they will be successfull in retaining its character.
so visit soon before its gone.
please excuse my writing I think im on a florid writing course!!!!
sod it im off to the pub. -
black francis "iris bitch":
Shows what you know, calling me rude names. guess even the "talk backs" allow illiterates. i think the discussion is above you and you need to enroll in grade school once more.
hopefully next time you you want to ask if I seen "the movies?" you might note I wouldn't have made a comment about SOS if I hadn't seen it. unlike you, i won't comment pros/cons on films I haven't seen. duh.
Yeah, yeah. Go ahead and say something dumber.
after all, talk backs were designed for sassy cocksuckers like yourself.
-
Yeah, by grinning at them, I'm sure you clearly imparted to the Hughes' Bros you were just kidding with the offensive racist remark about pigeonholed black filmmakers. Real nice. And please, could you use the word "whore" a little more often? Harry's reviews may be grammatical nightmares from time to time, and he may get a little geekish in his glee, but at least he doesn't turn in tripe like this. Show Gonzo the door, Harry!
-
Nice work yelling at me as opposed to even trying to respond to any comment that I made. Obviously you saw the 'movies' (I will not get all pretentious and say film) but you clearly didn't get them. You can call me an 'iris bitch' (and you say I am dumb?) but you can't rise above your fratboy attitude to discuss anything. I guess it does show what I know. Unlike you, I don't look at a cast of primarily black actors and run screaming from the theater b/c it might be, oh no, a black movie. If you can stop being a dope for 5 seconds, maybe you can see them for stories as opposed to pigeonholing them according to race.
ps. sassy? who the hell talk like that? Surely you could have come up w/something better. -
Why haven't they made Roger Zelazny's "A Night in the Lonesome October" into a movie? Jack the Ripper and his dog saving the world from the return of the Elder Gods! C'mon! It's pure money! And as far as Gonzo's comments go, it seems like a tacky thing to have said, but I can't really be sure about it, because, like all of you, I wasn't there, and it's none of my business to judge anyway.
-
I don't know if he's really Gonzo or if he's really a Filmmaker, but he's just a guy who saw a sneak preview and wrote down some thoughts about it, that's all! Not the most informative review in the world and the article was over-personalized with his foot-in-mouth anecdote, but y'all are making him sound like Daniel Carver. Loud-talking the Hughes Bros. was like the time I tried to get Meadowlark's autograph while he was sitting on the bench during the Bucketeers game -- you just don't do that kinda thing. He probably knows that now and he included the story in his piece out of pure guilt. But hey, Larry King or Jon Stewart or Conan or Leno or Letterman or Ebert or even Harry can make remarks about this being "a non-black-movie Hughes Bros. movie" without being lynched, so let's lay off Gonzo. After all, calling black men "black" is not the worst thing anybody's ever done. P.S. for a MUCH better Jack the Ripper comic, check out Rick Geary's Treasury of Victorian Murder!
-
A lot of Hollywood kids would have put out weak reworkings of their Dad's movies. Allan and Albert could have done some high school comedy set in Shermer, Illinois but they are their own men.
-
Just like Watchmen. I mean, you COULD adapt it, but if you can't do it the proper justice, what's the point? Not many of the characters in From Hell are very likeable at all. That already a mark against it by Hollywood standards. They're also not young and beautiful like Depp and Graham are. Which, Heather Graham, if her performance here is like any of her recent films, was a bad choice for Mary.
-
holy shit this guy is a fucking loser! i heard his movie is called "how to make members of minority races incredibly uncomfortable" to be followed by the sequel "how to make members of minority races incredibly uncomfortable 2 : Bragging about it on the internet"
-
This is great... this is exactly what I wanted... some of you have no idea how lame and retarded and PC you are. BTW... I'm surprised no one who went to the screening posted, "no one ever said that!" Oh well, no one has a sense of humor anymore. If you think I'm a racist... then you have YOUR heads up your asses. I didn't write a "review" just some of what I saw without spoiling it for others. There's no point in reviewing a film that won't be out for six months that's not even completed yet.
-
... too bad it doesn't make your comments about the, um (what was the subject of the post again???) oh, yeah, the MOVIE! Too bad the handy lesson doesn't make your comments about the movie any more interesting or insightful. But at least your neat plan worked!
-
Donnie shut the fuck up!
-
It's always "just a joke," right? Like when racist asswipes like Bob Grant or Don Imus spewed their crap over the airwaves it was "just a joke." And when anyone objects they're called "PC faggots" (thanks, Choderboy. You certainly live up to your name). After all, we certainly don't want to be "PC," do we? Especially when it comes to Blacks. PC? That's surely the worst thing in the world. Far worse then being a dumbshit bigoted fuckhead. I guess. ****************As to the movie: so far, from what I've heard of it it's looking good. The graphic novel on which it is based interests me; right now I'm engrossed in a bio of Teddy Roosevelt--another fameous person of that era--but I plan to put "From Hell" on my to-read list ASAP. If it is as good as some here say it is then I hope that any liberties that were taken with the script were just for the cause of translating novel into film. A decently made, creepy Jack the Ripper flick would be an ironic antidote to all the cheeseball slasher flicks we've been plagued with lately.
-
really lookin forward to this flick. Though as I live in the Emerald Isle I will be waiting waitin watin......
The graphic novel is unfilmable; too many strands, too complex to put into a two hour movie, Coincidentally Mary Kelly the Rippers supposed final victim came from my home town Derry City she left when she was 6 or 7 to go into service with a London family. But as often happens the Man of the house expected more than the usual cleaning from her so she left. becoming a prozzer which ironically all her realitives in Derry saw as making a name for herself -
I remember in the early 80's, when I was around 4 years old, traveling to the sunday car-boot sale in whitechapel from our flat in Poplar, in the back of the old Granada estate (MKII!), and being entranced by the sound of the songs and prayer calls from the the little ornate domes on the Mosques. after that, I always asked why there was no "Singing" anytime we went to a different car-boot sale.
-
Thanks Marvin!
I was wondering when the petty sniping might stop.
I dont mind all that as there should be room for everyone i just wonder whether its worth it. I mean go and read what gonzo wrote.
It was pretty obvious that gonzo was being ironic/sarcastic. as any fule kno...
Maybe self depreciation and piss taking is beyond some people or perhaps the medium dont lend itself to the subtleties of conversation. Perhaps he should have used one of those icons like ;-) or just written (ONLY JOKING!!!!!!)
I was hoping for a bit of a chat about THE FILM! and How they have recreated Whitechapel in Prague. Imagine walking round the set. some weird echo...
Sets always look tatty up close. I once walked into one in Paddington Station.
In fact i just remembered that there was some filming in a church in Hackney a few weeks ago - wonder what it was. I always hope im gonna bump into Julia Roberts in my local caff or sumething!
Going back to the sniping...
I think Americans should stop arguing about what is PC and address racism etc in a more adult way.
Talk about fiddling while Rome burns!!!! Where were you lot when Florida happened? Probably wondering 'how many Darth Vaders you can fit on a pinhead"
Meanwhile, back at the office all the real work gets done, fukkin up the planet, an eventually every one gets a raw deal.
Can anyone tell me where George Lucas (and Tod McFarlaine for that matter) get all their toys produced? Who produces them and how much do they get paid. Whats their working conditions like.
Where do basesball bats get made?
I was in a toy shop a few weeks ago and everything was made in China. Is that constrctive engagement?
Ah well, rant over, back to the programme...
star wars IV good star wars I bad etc etc etc blah blah
-
I hope she takes the part seriously, and gets deep into her character.
By this I mean getting herpes, and pubic lice for that authentic circa 1888 prostitute look.
-
Gonzo, your loud comments about the Hughes Brothers were just plain impolite and uncalled for. Didn't your mama raise you any better? How clueless and classless could you possibly be?
-
... so much that I think that a movie made by the Hughes brothers was really good. Wow! What a racist... you people make me sick.
-
Gonzo, I'm really sorry you've been mistaken for a racist. Maybe your backpedalling is honest, and you are not a racist. You just make racist statements, is all. Hm? Wh'zat? You were JOKING? Yeah, well, it's not funny. So you're not a racist, not a comedian, not a filmmaker with talent (as it was 'stolen' from you) and hopefully, after Harry sees your racist joke and the reactions here, NOT EMPLOYED by AICN anymore. I don't care to share your thoughts on what's a good movie or not anymore. If you'll break your word given by signature on confidentiality, why should your signature on anything else (such as a check) be any more valid? Go give your opinions to those who don't "make you sick" like the KKK. Maybe your opinions won't make them sick either. (Now don't be racially offended. Whoopie done wrote that joke)

Give the guy a break for Christ

Who's better? A racist that does not make racist jokes OR a non-
by m_r_e
Maybe Gonzo's not a racist. Maybe Gonzo just makes racist jokes. Oh, okay then. haha (knee-slap) Maybe Gonzo's just a poor comedian and those who do not hoot over his clever humor disguised as racism just "make him sick". Gonzo could have apologized or even said "Whoops" but no, Gonzo has to lash out with more offensiveness at those his racist joke has already offended. Maybe if it was just a bad joke,.Oh, did he mention that he likes the movie? Well, okay then. Gonzo thinks that if he says he likes a movie by the Hughes Bros then his statements are not racist. Right, so if I like the black eyed peas and fried chicken that a "negro" cooks up, whatever else I say about him is OK? Wrong. But instead of stopping the offense, Gonzo lashes out more. Just stop, already. Smooth, Baby. GONZO, you poor thing. Have a good life, make 'em laugh if you can, Just Not Interested At All.

We after all the postings what have we learnt?
1. No one has anything to say about the Movie.
2. Some people cant detect irony or humour.
thank yew and gud nite!
ps. baseballs are made in Haiti. Workers earn 38 cents per dozen baseballs sewn. An average girl can sew three and a half to four dozen a day - $1.33 to $1.52 a day.

Dont you people know that its only acceptable to make fun of white people and asians? DO NOT MAKE THE SLIGHTEST JOKE ABOUT ANYTHING BLACK!! dont make fun of or dislike rap, jesse jackson, or black directors. If you do, you are a racist. cracker, gook, and kike jokes are ok, but only if you are black.
P.S. get your heads out of your asses, you double-standard-having, suckers of the PC cock.
