Derek Flint takes a look at Ben Stiller's ZOOLANDER

Published at:  Mar 18, 2001 8:32:22 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with Derek Flint... a spy that has sent us early reviews beginning with WHAT WOMEN WANT, THE GRINCH, CHARLIE'S ANGELS and many others... Now he takes a look... way in advance of the first test screening (at least that we've heard of) of Ben Stiller's ZOOLANDER... a flick that Ben has been working his ass off on. Now usually I'd give you a warning about how not to take a review this early to heart, but... well since Flint absolutely loved the hell out of the comedy, I guess it is safe to say... well, it could very well be funny. Read on...

Hey, Harry.  Because of your e-mail problems I don't have a longer review
that I was trying to send you. The reason I'm finally checking in again
because I have some good news to report. I've seen what will probably wind up
being the funniest movie of the year: Ben Stiller's "Zoolander."

Written and directed by Big Ben, it's the story of a washed up male model,
also played by Stiller which is a character he did on his missed but not
forgotten Fox show, who gets kidnapped and brainwashed to assassinate the
president of Malaysia.

Original, hip and smart... Owen Wilson is also a scream in this thing.
Christina Taylor, Ben's wife, is also a doll.  (She was also in Stiller's
unsold Fox pilot "Heat Vision & Jack."  Fox should be called Lox, they're
such losers over there.  Can you believe they've actually given Jenny
McCarthy yet ANOTHER TV show.)

Anyhow, no spoilers here.  The version that was shown is still being worked
on, and I'm sure Stiller will be perfecting his diamond which wasn't all that
rough.

"Zoolander" is the next big thing.  Austin Powers might have to step aside,
cuz this dude is the funniest spy around.

Take care, Harry.

    Is It Me, Or. . . ?

    by cowblaster

. . . Does "Zoolander" sound like a weird cross between "Dr. Doolittle" and "Highlander?"

Uh...since when did Malaysia have a 'president'??

    by jd20

That was the first question that went through my head when I first read the synopsis to this movie. Malaysia has a Prime Minister and has never had a president. Then I figured that the script writers must have made it written in a President to avoid confusing 9 out of 10 Americans...DUH!

I saw the Zoolander segment on the Vh1 Fashion Awards and i found it hard to stop laughing.Everyone i showed laughed too.If this is any indication of Zoolander's quality, then were looking at $150 million+ at the box office easy.Ben Stiller has finally got a movie where he is the main star which is going to be very successful. When me and my friends see those guys on the cover of GQ we always think of Ben Stiller in that Zoolander segment.I can't wait.

    A Prayer For Owen Wilson

    by willardeisenbaum

DUDES! How can this movie miss!?! The Stiller/Owen chemistry was the best thing about Meet The Parents. Owen is SO likable, which is good because Ben is not well liked by some people for some reason, why is that!? He rules. Mystery Men rules. Cable Guy rules. Reality Bites almost kid of rules. Go Zoolander!

Cable Guy is EASILY Jim Carrey's best movie. I think most people were just surprised that he didn't spend 90 minutes talking out of his ass. It's sick, it's deep, it's socially relevant, and it's fucking hilarious! And Owen Wilson was phenomenal in his cameo, as was Ben Stiller. I wasn't really looking forward to this movie, but with Owen co-starring, and Ben behind the camera, I'm starting to get the impression it'll probably be better than the summary sheet suggests. Go Zoo!

    Stiller/Owen combo cool

    by the ponce

I loved both of them in Meet the Parents. The scene where owen says that he carved the chapel by hand from one piece of wood cracks me up! Anywho, stiller is the man, this cant go wrong.

P.s are stiller/owen friends in real life?

Hey, this is my first post on talkback, so I'll try not to sound like a total idiot.

Maybe the whole point of having him try to assassinate the Malaysian president is a plot twist for comedic effect. Maybe it's sort of poking fun at the government saying how they wouldn't know any better, so in the long road down towards the climax of the film, he can't assissinate the Malaysian president, because there is no Malaysian president. Only the prime minister.

I hope that makes sense, because reading back over it just makes my head hurt. :)

    "Original, hip and smart..."

    by the pardoner

HAHAHA!!! What kind of review is that? Anyone capable of such a worthless, offensively stupid description should be lynched. This was either written by one of the most feeble pieces of work ever to post on AICN (he's in lofty company there), or it's a plant. Since I'm apparently one of the few people here who doesn't cream their shorts at the first whiff of a pointless conspiracy, I'll assume this guy is simply a fluttering twit. --- Oh yeah, despite likely having to place myself in such insipid company, the movie could be good, if for no other reason than Ben Stiller. It won't be great, for that same reason, but it might give a laugh or two.

As far as I'm concerned, MADE is the movie to beat.

    by smurfette

Stiller rocks, but let's not get crazy. Made is the comedy I've got my money on.

Did any one ever see Bottle Rocket?

    by jacktreehorn

Owen Wilson is probably not only the most underrated comedic actor right now, but what about his writing? He co-wrote both Bottle Rocket and Rushmore - two of the absolute most original and entertaining films of the 90's.

Bottle Rocket kicks ass. Not as polished as Rushmore, but funny as hell. I'm fuckin' dying to see Royal Tannenbaums.

    zoolander insight!

    by doeboy

Just a little insight. ZOOLANDER is based on a character co-created by Drake Sather (NEWS RADIO, LARRY SANDERS) and Ben, and made into a skit for the VH1 fashion awards a few years back. The feature script is also co-written by Drake and Ben. The script is very funny, and the movie will kick ass also!

    by amamamy

Owen Wilson is an absolute genius and steals every scene he's in. Ben Stiller...it goes without saying...is brilliant. Great movie, great cameos...Bowie! Gotta love it. Definitely going to prove to be the funniest movie of the year.

    I'm tellin' you

    by hansel

So I saw Made last week, and the rough test screen of Zoolander in March.... Honestly Zoolander might be funnier. It depends what they cut. Give the edge to Zoolander though... with supporting scene stealers Ferrell, Jerry Stiller, Bowie... against... err... P-Diddy?

Those along with The Big Lewbowski have to be may favorite 3 comedies and favorite films of the 90s. Bottle Rocket was Owen and Luke Wilson at their best.
